A Wonderful Wednesday to You All! Joel Benjamin created the Immersive Film “Max Q,” one of the highlights of the VR Pavilion at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2025.                                                                                                                                      In fact, Joel took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Immersive Short! I am always too busy at our festival's Opening Night Gala to get a chance to watch the Immersive Films up in the VR Pavilion, but thankfully Joel created a “play through” video that gives a non-interactive representation of the work and... holy moly I'm impressed.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              It's a fun, captivating thrill-ride in a cutting edge cinematic format. I hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready to start the week with a great film chat! Braeden and Nathan Lambert brought their film “The Big Picture” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2025 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Music Video.                                                                     The story behind the film, and what led them to create it, is very engaging and I won't give it away here.                                                                                                                                                                   You'll just have to listen to the podcast find out! Nathan is a musician and composer who goes by the moniker New Monk.                                                                                                                                                                                                              Braeden, the filmmaker of the team, pitched the idea for this film that would be set to Nathan's music and have more in common with a performance art film than a traditional music video.                                    It's clear that Nathan loved the concept, and the two put together their team and made this extremely creative project happen. And I have to brag that I learned during this interview that FI-LA 2025 was The Big Picture's world premiere... how cool is that?!?! Imagine my delight when Chris submitted a new documentary, “Broadway & Swan,” to the 10th Anniversary edition of FI-LA!                                                                                                                                    Not only that, but Chris took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Director, Featurette this time. Welcome Back To All You Indie Film Discoverers! I met filmmaker Ari Flesch at the Opening Night Gala of Film Invasion Los Angeles in June 2025.                                                                                                                                                                               Ari's animated short “It's Not For Me To Say” was an official selection and, this might only be funny for Ari and I, but we noticed our similar looks and heritage and then, when he came over to do this podcast, we were both wearing a black shirt and green shorts.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Okay, this is all less important than the fact that “It's Not For Me To Say” took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film, Animation at FI-LA 2025. Ari's film is beautiful, funny, touching and even a little heartbreaking.                                                                                                                                                                                                                               We had a great Q&A at the theater but anyone who listens to this podcast knows that a fifteen minute Q&A where people in the audience get to ask questions as well is not enough for me! This is normally where I type that you can follow the guest on social media, but Ari isn't wasting his time on that nonsense! Yay!!!                                                                                                                            This is why he manages to be such a productive creative while working full time in animation. It's a great day today because Filmmaker Lindsay Nyman returns to the podcast! And she was zooming in from Berlin! Lindsay directed and produced the film, working side by-side with cinematographer Katie Eleneke and assembling an all-female crew local to Hanoi.                                                                                            Lindsay always credits the heart and authenticity of the film to this extraordinary Vietnamese team, who brought their talent, care, and cultural insight to the process and became like family. This is a special podcast for me. Why? Jon James Smith wrote and directed “Last Orders,” a horror short that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2022. As a London resident, Jon was not able to attend the festival but I made a point to tell him of how well-received the film had been. I invited Jon onto the podcast then and he held off for a great reason.              He did not want to Zoom in from London for the interview, he wanted to do it in person. When live performance shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, actors Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen weren't sure when—or if—they'd ever be onstage again. So, they turned to an unexpected venue: Grand Theft Auto Online, a sprawling, open-world video game best known for fast cars, chaotic and often criminal missions, and player-driven mayhem. Amid the game's unpredictable violence, they decided to stage Hamlet—it would be the first ever complete performance of a Shakespeare play within a video game. Filmmaker Pinny Grylls joined them and turned the experiment into a documentary: Grand Theft Hamlet. Shot entirely within the game, the film won the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival. “A startling example of using any tools at your disposal to make memorable art,” said the Rotten Tomatoes website. “Grand Theft Hamlet's experimental approach does justice by the Bard.” In this episode, Crane and Grylls talk about performance, friendship, and grief during lockdown, as well as how one of Shakespeare's most famous plays unexpectedly resonated with a virtual cast of strangers and a world in isolation. The result is both funny and poignant, and as surprising as live theater itself. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published July 1, 2025. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. A new podcast is out to ail your case of the Mondays! Writer/Director ETA had a vision, and that vision turned into the incredibly compelling film “White Gaze.” This thought provokingly authentic parable about gentrification and appropriation is also an engaging horror film,                                                                                                                                                       and it took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles  in 2024. Welcome back, Everybody! I hope 2025 is treating you well so far. My guest on today's podcast is Alina Krasnianska, the Executive Producer of “Culture vs war. Liberov,” a documentary that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Documentary at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024. In this case “home” is Kyiv, Ukraine. The logline for the film is, “A deeply touching story of the war by the eyes of the couple of photographers Kostyantyn and Vlada Liberov.” I sincerely do not have words for how powerful and important this film is. In fact, I wish that every person in the USA would watch it right now. No, I want everyone in the world to see it. And you can... right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgVN6HHIW3k This film is one documentary of six in the “Culture vs. War” series and a feature length adaptation of the series is on the way. I do not feel that I am exaggerating when I say that this film is one of the most important films that has ever played at either Film Invasion Los Angeles or Sherman Oaks film festival. Honestly, I cannot believe how lucky I am that I had the opportunity to talk to Alina for two hours about this film, about the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, and about life in the country that my great grandparents fled in the 1890's. But even if you have no tie to Ukraine surely any person who believes in human rights, freedom, democracy, and the right to not be murdered in your home by a fascist neighbor will appreciate Alina's films and hopefully this podcast interview with her. What is truly inspiring is that Alina and her creative partners reacted to the invasion by highlighting the power of Culture to overcome War. There is so much I want to say about this film and Alina, but I will instead just ask you to listen to the interview and WATCH THE FILMS. Peter Menchini directed the animated short, “When Mama and Me Lived Outside,” that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film – Animation at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2023. This unique, compelling and meaningful film tells the story of Tiny Gray-Garcia's children's book of the same name, utilizing the artwork in creative and original ways to support the story. We had a wonderful screening of “When Mama and Me Lived Outside” at FILA 2023 that included a great Q&A with Peter and Tiny. With some artists the creative spark doesn't stop just because the guitar gets put down. That's Annie Williams. Anyone who knows her would say the same. From her self-built straw bale house to her hand-sewn performance costumes to her deeply personal songs, the muse follows her everywhere she goes, and does its best to keep up. She just released her debut album, Visitor, seven years and one lifetime in the making. Produced with Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses, it's at once playful and fresh and, like Annie, pretty damn original. The cover of the record is a photograph of the artist jumping through a ring of fire on her motorcycle. The fire was real, the ring was homemade. The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In this thought-provoking conversation we talk about some of the more notable moments in a career nosing into its twentieth year, like, say, her arrival in Nashville. She was living in Wyoming and a touring christian hip hop group saw her play and invited her to roll with them back to Tennessee. I mean of course. We discuss how her decision to break away from her small business designing handmade bags dovetailed unexpectedly with her first publishing deal, and how that led to sync licenses on several TV shows. And you might be hard pressed to get her to admit it, but Annie is an actor, and a good one. She was approached to star in the film A Funeral for Lightning directed by Emily Kai Bock, which premiered at TIFF and went on to win the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film at the LA Film Festival. Like many of her opportunities, it was gifted, not sought. There's a word for people like Annie Williams and that word is autodidact. She teaches herself to do things and then she does those things at her own speed in a sort of secret dance with the world around her. Its an orchestration of energy, at once mysterious and inevitable. There's so much I won't tell you about, so you can discover it yourself. I guess I should say she plays an unreleased song live in the studio.  Emily. Listen:I hope you take a moment to listen to or watch episode #141 of the Morse Code Podcast.
