Happy Monday, Everyone and thank you for tuning in. I know that sometimes I kind of turn into an instant-uncle with some of the filmmakers on the podcast. I will come right out and confess Lauren Moreno joins this club. I am absolutely crushed by the authenticity of “Palmdale,” a film that Lauren directed and co-wrote the was an official selection at the 2024 Sherman Oaks Film Festival. The film took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Drama as well as Best Lead Performer - Featurette for Isabelle Marchard. And it took home a little piece of me, as this wonderful movie lives in my heart. And, through the transitive property, this means that my new unofficial niece Lauren Moreno is in there, too. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Monday I posted my chat with writer/director ETA and lead actress Gemi Rubi about their thought provoking & engaging horror film, "White Gaze," that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. A new podcast is out to ail your case of the Mondays! Writer/Director ETA had a vision, and that vision turned into the incredibly compelling film “White Gaze.” This thought provokingly authentic parable about gentrification and appropriation is also an engaging horror film, and it took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. ETA pulled their lead actor Gema Rubi onto the podcast with them, which was extra fun because ETA literally pulled a non-actor friend into their film and it was a great choice. TGIF! Ty Clancey is a returning champion! Ty was on episode 366 to talk about his short film “Thank You For Staying,” an Official Selection at Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021. After the podcast, he sent me his hilarious human-puppet hybrid comedy “Support.com and You!” and I loved it so much that we instantly threw it onto The Indie Channel. Ty came back to the podcast because in 2023 his beautiful, stylistic horror short “Drawn” was an Official Selection in Sherman Oaks Film Festival. In In classic Ty fashion, he didn't realize that “Drawn” won the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Horror and Best Cinematography for Stephen Tringali until I told him on the podcast! (If memory serves, he didn't know about the awards “Thank You For Staying” won until he came onto the podcast. Not gonna lie. I enjoy my conversations with Ty so much that I may have to think of an excuse to bring him on again even before he makes another film. He was on episode 366 in March 2023 and here he is, back on episode 504 in March 2025. Maybe I should that he come back for a March 2027 episode? Happy Monday, Film Friends! That's right, we are trying on a Mon-Wed-Fri schedule because we have so many exciting talks to share with you all! Did everybody listen to my interview with the extraordinary Alina Krasnianska on Tuesday? I truly hope so. Like I said before, Alina's documentary “Culture vs war. Liberov” is easily one of the most important films we've had the privilege of showing at either Film Invasion or The Sherman Oaks Film Festival. It took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Documentary at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024 and is one documentary of six in the “Culture vs. War” series with a feature length adaptation of the series is on the way. Alina generously included the links to watch the entire series, so check out Tuesday's interview post for those links. Welcome back, Everybody! I hope 2025 is treating you well so far. My guest on today's podcast is Alina Krasnianska, the Executive Producer of “Culture vs war. Liberov,” a documentary that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Documentary at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024. In this case “home” is Kyiv, Ukraine. The logline for the film is, “A deeply touching story of the war by the eyes of the couple of photographers Kostyantyn and Vlada Liberov.” I sincerely do not have words for how powerful and important this film is. In fact, I wish that every person in the USA would watch it right now. No, I want everyone in the world to see it. And you can... right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgVN6HHIW3k This film is one documentary of six in the “Culture vs. War” series and a feature length adaptation of the series is on the way. I do not feel that I am exaggerating when I say that this film is one of the most important films that has ever played at either Film Invasion Los Angeles or Sherman Oaks film festival. Honestly, I cannot believe how lucky I am that I had the opportunity to talk to Alina for two hours about this film, about the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, and about life in the country that my great grandparents fled in the 1890's. But even if you have no tie to Ukraine surely any person who believes in human rights, freedom, democracy, and the right to not be murdered in your home by a fascist neighbor will appreciate Alina's films and hopefully this podcast interview with her. What is truly inspiring is that Alina and her creative partners reacted to the invasion by highlighting the power of Culture to overcome War. There is so much I want to say about this film and Alina, but I will instead just ask you to listen to the interview and WATCH THE FILMS. Alina has shared links with us for the films as well as other important videos, news sources, and Facebook pages. A Very Happy New Year's Eve to You All! I hope everyone is feeling healthy, rested and peacefully reflective on this past year. One thing that certainly filled my 2024 cup to the brim is all the amazing chats with talented, interesting filmmakers. I'm thrilled to end the last day of this year with one more, and I think it's a great one. Peter Menchini directed the animated short, “When Mama and Me Lived Outside,” that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film – Animation at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2023. I referred to this film as an “animated documentary” and Peter agreed. This unique, compelling and meaningful film tells the story of Tiny Gray-Garcia's children's book of the same name, utilizing the artwork in creative and original ways to support the story. We had a wonderful screening of “When Mama and Me Lived Outside” at FILA 2023 that included a great Q&A with Peter and Tiny. I knew that it would be a wonderful and rewarding interview if or when Peter had time to do the podcast. Much to my delight we were able to record a Zoom interview and Peter did not disappoint, as the conversation is fantastic and, to me, particularly meaningful. Peter shared the following links: Anyone who wants to buy Tiny's book, and you SHOULD, can do so here: https://www.poorpress.net/ You can learn more if you visit Poor Magazine's website: https://www.poormagazine.org/ And, finally, Peter shared this fun video with us: https://vimeo.com/270538513. With some artists the creative spark doesn't stop just because the guitar gets put down. That's Annie Williams. Anyone who knows her would say the same. From her self-built straw bale house to her hand-sewn performance costumes to her deeply personal songs, the muse follows her everywhere she goes, and does its best to keep up. She just released her debut album, Visitor, seven years and one lifetime in the making. Produced with Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses, it's at once playful and fresh and, like Annie, pretty damn original. The cover of the record is a photograph of the artist jumping through a ring of fire on her motorcycle. The fire was real, the ring was homemade. The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In this thought-provoking conversation we talk about some of the more notable moments in a career nosing into its twentieth year, like, say, her arrival in Nashville. She was living in Wyoming and a touring christian hip hop group saw her play and invited her to roll with them back to Tennessee. I mean of course. We discuss how her decision to break away from her small business designing handmade bags dovetailed unexpectedly with her first publishing deal, and how that led to sync licenses on several TV shows. And you might be hard pressed to get her to admit it, but Annie is an actor, and a good one. She was approached to star in the film A Funeral for Lightning directed by Emily Kai Bock, which premiered at TIFF and went on to win the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film at the LA Film Festival. Like many of her opportunities, it was gifted, not sought. There's a word for people like Annie Williams and that word is autodidact. She teaches herself to do things and then she does those things at her own speed in a sort of secret dance with the world around her. Its an orchestration of energy, at once mysterious and inevitable. There's so much I won't tell you about, so you can discover it yourself. I guess I should say she plays an unreleased song live in the studio. Emily. Listen:I hope you take a moment to listen to or watch episode #141 of the Morse Code Podcast. It's a good one. First time filmmakers Tim Slowikowski & Aaron Hagele brought their documentary feature "Party Dream" to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2022 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Documentary at the 2022. Aaron Hagele & Tim Slowikowski made the documentary feature "Party Dream," which you can watch right now by clicking the Party Dream justwatch.com page. This fantastic film took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Documentary at the 2022 Sherman Oaks Film Festival and I've been shouting at strangers on the street to watch it ever since. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Sarah Cugini & Brandon C. Lay have collaborated on multiple films, all under Brandon's Living Proof Pictures Brand. Their feature film, "Bitter Taste of Ginger," which Brandon wrote & directed, Sarah was the lead actor in, and both produced with collaborators Marcy Repp and Joshua Faturos, came to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021 and took home two Grand Jury Awards, Best Feature Film – Arthouse/Experimental and Best Actress in a Lead Role for Sarah! Their short film "Cueball" played at Film Invasion Los Angeles in June of 2022 along with "Bitter Taste of Ginger," making it the rare film to play both SOFF and FILA. Today, I speak with Emmy-nominated filmmaker and social scientist, Lindsay Branham. The Founder of Novo, an incubator for art that inspires human connection in imaginative ways, Lindsay leverages media and technology to end violence and human rights abuses. Lindsay has given specific focus over the last ten years to documenting and responding to the issue of children in armed conflict in central Africa but has an overall commitment to entering into complex, conflict or disaster areas and using visual storytelling to highlight the human experience. The interventions she has designed have focused on peacefully dismantling the Lord's Resistance Army from within, facilitating the reintegration of former child soldiers, preventing recruitment into violent extremist groups, reducing psychological distress and challenging the root causes of bonded labour. Her partners in these media-based interventions include Search for Common Ground, The Freedom Fund and Google. With an MPhil in Social Psychology from the University of Cambridge, Lindsay has studied trauma and mental health at Harvard Medical School and journalism at the University of Southern California. Her current focus is exploring the efficacy of Virtual Reality to reduce prejudice in the Central African Republic, and her Virtual Reality documentary, Behind The Fence, was nominated for an Emmy and won the Grand Jury Award for best 360 film at SXSW. A Kathryn Davis Fellow for Peace, Lindsay was named the inaugural Envision social good fellow by the Independent Film Project and the United Nations, and she has been published by CNN, the BBC and The New York Times. Her research investigating the link between media and behaviour change has been published by Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and in academic journals. Recorded on 14th Oct 2022.
Brandon C. Lay wrote and directed the feature film "Bitter Taste of Ginger," which lead actor Sarah Cugini absolutely threw onto her shoulders and brought to life. These two also co-produced the film with collaborators Marcy Repp and Joshua Faturos. "Bitter Taste of Ginger" came to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021 and took home two Grand Jury Awards, Best Feature Film – Arthouse/Experimental and Best Actress in a Lead Role for Sarah! These two frequent collaborators represent the best in indie film; innovative, rule-breaking, and original. You can add to this introduction that their short film "Cueball" played at Film Invasion Los Angeles in June of 2022 along with "Bitter Taste of Ginger," making it the rare film to play both SOFF and FILA. Also, Sarah is the first and so far only actor to take hime the Grand Jury Award for Best Lead Role in both festivals! Okay. That is enough intro. I certainly hope you enjoy this interview! Welcome to the Nick Taylor Horror show, Episode 100! As always, each episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show explores how today's horror filmmakers are getting their movies made while deconstructing their methods and career strategies into practical insights that you can use on your own horror filmmaking journey. This includes their creative processes, funding resources, favorite books & tools, key life lessons, and much much more. I have a very special episode in store today, one that should put a smile on all of your faces. That's right, Parker Finn is in the house! Parker is a man who should need no introduction for us horror fans as the director behind one of this year's breakout horror hits, SMILE. First of all, I owe an enormous thank you to my friend Joe Russo who made this interview happen. Joe, you're the best, and I thank you very, very much. So, Parker has obviously been doing a lot of interviews recently, and I made an effort to make my questions as unique as possible. As a result, we got into a lot of the craft of SMILE, how he worked with actors, his DP and editor, and the keys to crafting effective scares. One thing we didn't get into very much was the overall origin story about how SMILE, Parker's very first feature, came to be. So I will give you the short version right here. In 2020, after struggling as a filmmaker in Los Angeles for about 8 years, Parker made a short film called LAURA HASN'T SLEPT for roughly $30,000. LAURA HASN'T SLEPT ultimately got into SXSW, where it won the Grand Jury Award and shortly thereafter got the attention of Paramount, who offered Parker the opportunity to direct a feature adaptation which turned into SMILE. SMILE was originally intended to go straight to streaming on Paramount plus, but after a series of overwhelmingly positive audience reaction tests, SMILE was given a wide theatrical release. To date, SMILE has made over two hundred million at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time, which for a first-time director, is really fuckin cool. For a more comprehensive deep dive into Parker's origin story, definitely check out Mick Garris' conversation with Parker on the Post Mortem podcast. I listened to that right before doing this interview to make sure we didn't cover the same ground, so the two are very complimentary if you want a fuller picture. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Parker Finn: Do one thing really right in your short. Parker's short, LAURA HASN'T SLEPT, is excellent and was the catalyst that led to him getting SMILE made. You can actually watch LAURA HASN'T SLEPT on the upcoming SMILE blu ray release or for free on YouTube right now (link is in the show notes). When it comes to shorts, Parker claims that lots of filmmakers try to make their shorts do too many things when instead, focusing on doing one thing really, really effectively is what makes shorts stand out. Focusing your forces allows your shorts to go deep instead of wide, which is suitable for the short-form medium, which is intended to be a single act, a single movement, and therefore is best suited for a single focus. Parker also recommends pulling off things that are not typical or difficult to do in your shorts to show what you're capable of as a director. Start with character and then throw their worst-case scenario at them. Parker has spoken at length about how the scariest horror movies are most powerful when you care about the characters that the terrible things are happening to. Horror filmmakers must be effective dramatists firsts by enabling the audience to empathize with their characters. Effective horror works through empathy because if done right, your audience will experience terror through your characters. With this in mind, it's critical to ground your characters with honesty and relatability so the audience can connect with them upfront. If you fail to properly build empathy, the audience will simply observe your characters from the perspective of a detached third party which just isn't as scary as experiencing the horror through them firsthand. Next, once you figure out who your characters are and make the audiences care, design and fine-tune the horror element to be the worst-case scenario for them specifically. Follow intuition on set and science in post. Parker mentions that when crafting fear, he typically relies on his intuition while shooting but then applies more analytical thinking when approaching things like building tension and scares in the edit. Horror relies on a critical balance between science and intuition, left-brain and right-brain thinking. To craft fear, you need to have an inherent human understanding of what is frightening. In addition, it's important to recognize that horror is a seduction, one that relies very heavily on pacing, which is why your editor is one of your most important collaborators. Also, it's near impossible to be objective about how scary your own movie is because you're likely to be too close to it, so you may want to do what Parker did and test your scares. Parker would sit people down to watch certain scenes during the edit to observe whether they would actually get scared. Don't get caught up in the noise. Parker reflects on his eight years in Hollywood and constantly hearing all manner of bad advice for filmmakers. He also observed multiple industries aimed at exploiting aspiring screenwriters with crappy resources and products. Parker considers this to be a bunch of noise and says it's important for directors to phase it out. He recommends focusing on you as an artist. What speaks to you? What are you most interested in, and what will you be able to focus obsessively over in your movies? These are typically the kinds of projects that break the most new ground because they're personal, unique, and directors care way more about them. Phasing out the noise can help you individuate your vision and films so they can stand out in the industry. These are the kinds of films that the industry needs and the kinds of films that fans prefer, and honestly, given the recent success of films like SMILE, TERRIFIER 2, and BARBARIAN, right now could not be a better time for original horror. Episode 100 in the bag! A big huge thank you to you, dear listener. Without you and your support, this podcast would not be possible. Looks like I'll be taking a short break before coming back with season 4, but in the meantime, keep in touch and keep those cameras rolling. Thanks again for listening to the Nick Taylor Horror Show! I had the sheer joy & opportunity to sit down with actress and comedian, Tammy Tavares. We discussed her journey from a trailer park in Mishawaka, Indiana to Beverly Hills adjacent, including her colorful resume of strip clubs, sugar daddies and an unrealized career in hairdressing, which ultimately landed her in a stable marriage and later become the foundation for her comedy.Tammy's chaotic childhood made her well-prepared for a career in Hollywood. In addition to the 12 years she played Dr. Karen Bader on Days of Our Lives, Tammy has appeared on Two and a Half Men, Drop Dead Diva, Las Vegas, N.Y.P.D. Blue and General Hospital. Her film roles include Mike Nichols' What Planet Are You From?; Beautiful Girl with Brendan Sexton III and Fuel, which won the Grand Jury Award at the Lisbon International Film Festival and Best Experimental Film in Mexico City International Film Festival in 2007.After 20 years playing roles ranging from Doctors to Dominatrix, the stories of Tammy's white trash family roots told on the crisp, clean wool carpets of her Los Angeles condo were enough to push her to the stages of local open mics. Since then, Tammy has quenched her artistic thirst through tales of teenage parents, spending a year as a stripper hooked on Vicodin, and the toughest of all, being a wife.Tammy resides in 9021-almost with her handsome, Germanic husband, Mark and their two cream-colored chow chows Mr. Eazy & Zoey. And we're kicking off our coverage with two films that show how family life can be both complicated and rewarding. And the cherry on top is- they're both festival winners! Hannah Ha Ha won the Grand Jury Award for best narrative feature, and the Acting Award for Hannah Lee Thompson, and Iron Family won the Audience Award for best documentary feature. The narrative feature Hannah Ha Ha follows a woman living at home with her father, struggling between what makes her happy, and her brother's pressure to be something she is not. We (virtually) sat down with co-directors and writers Jordan Tetewsky and Joshua Pikovsky, producer/talent Roger Mancusi, producer Emily Freire, and the award winner herself, Hannah Lee Thompson, to explain how they worked through last minute changes to the cast, filming during a pandemic, and finding the perfect tone to the story. In the documentary Iron Family, we meet Jazmine Faries, a woman with Down syndrome who is obsessed with Matthew McConaughey and soap operas. For the past five years, she has written a screenplay that her family performs for their small town in Iron River, Michigan. This film gives us a front row seat into the preparation and production of her sixth play. Director Patrick Longstreth and the subjects of the film/brother sister dynamic duo Jazmine and Chad Faries, discuss the importance of family, the power of community, and our mutual love for Days of Our Lives star Austin Peck. You can follow Hannah Ha Ha on IG & TwitterYou can follow actor Hannah Lee Thompson on IG & FB & SpotifyYou can follow director Jordan Tetewsky on IG & TwitterYou can follow producer/actor Roger Mancusi on IG & TwitterYou can follow producer Emily Freire on IGYou can follow director Patrick Longstreth on Twitter & FBYou can follow Jazmine Faries on IG & Twitter & FBYou can follow Chad Faries on IG & Twitter & FB--Thanks for listening and for your support! Geri is joined by Dan Perlman—co-creator and co-star of FLATBUSH MISDEMEANORS—to talk about the show's journey from a short to a network series, how the real Dan and Kevin compare to their onscreen characters, and the importance of hearing judgment-free feedback. Dan Perlman is a writer, stand-up comedian, and director. As a comedian, he has been featured on Comedy Central and was named one of the New Faces at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. He wrote and directed the 2020 short film CRAMMING, which won the Audience Award at the 2020 Brooklyn Film Festival and First Prize at the 2020 Rhode Island International Film Festival. Alongside Kevin Iso, Dan also co-created the award-winning web series "Flatbush Misdemeanors," the first installment of which received the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Short at the 2018 Florida Film Festival. Dan's latest project, FLATBUSH MISDEMEANORS, is an adaptation of the original web series. The dark comedy stars Dan and Kevin as fictionalized versions of themselves – young, up-and-coming comedians struggling to thrive in Flatbush, Brooklyn while tackling issues like race, gentrification, mental health and more. The series premiered in May 2021 and season 1 is available to stream on Showtime. -- Read shownotes, transcripts, and other member interviews: www.onwriting.org/ -- Follow the Guild on social media: Twitter: @OnWritingWGAE | @WGAEast Facebook: /WGAEast Instagram: @WGAEast

Another double guest balcony session with the incredibly talented and dynamic co-creators of "Search Party," Sarah-Violet Bliss & Charles Rogers. Rick invites them over to discuss how creating and running your own show compares to working on established projects, like the "Wet Hot American Summer" television series. They discuss their first official project together, "Fort Tilden," debuting at the SXSW film festival where is ALSO won that year's Grand Jury Award, then creating the critically acclaimed (then TBS) HBO Max series, "Search Party." They deep dive into all things creative process and career highlights as well as how they work seamlessly together. Weathering the outside elements of the balcony like consummate performers, they contend with wildfire ash, poop raining down, as well as some pretty great pyrotechnics. Lots of great advice and insight into being young writers, the path to success, and the culture of writing-rooms (aka boys club culture). A great episode for some inside-baseball style info for those wondering about or wanting to join the entertainment business. Joann Self Selvidge is a filmmaker, story teller and writer extraordinaire. Having founded True Story Pictures in 2004 - and again in 2010 - first as a nonprofit, and later as a social venture company. She has a passion for stories and storytelling that is grounded in her roots as a Southerner. Her life story films and documentaries, including The WLOK Story (2002), The Arts Interviews (2005-2008), Leveling the Playing Field (2008), Voices of Jericho (2007, 2010), The Music Interviews (2009), and The Art Academy (2012), share stories of music and art, race relations and leadership, education, inspiration, and social justice. Her short film about individuals with mental illness, Voices of Jericho: Stories of Jail Diversion, was awarded “Best Documentary” at the 2007 Indie Memphis Film Festival and “Grand Jury Award” at the 2008 Southern Shorts Film Festival in Athens, AL. Her work as a documentary filmmaker only thinly veils her "secret" identity as a grant writer and nonprofit management consultant. While she does not pursue this activity full time, she can be persuaded on occasion to work for your nonprofit or public/private partnership to secure grant funding from foundations, corporations, and government agencies. Since 2001, she has helped her clients win $8.95 million for projects ranging from arts, education, and technology; to health and human services, including housing and homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse; to economic and community development; to transportation and infrastructure. Joann lives in midtown Memphis with her rockstar husband and two children.
Jim Cummings career is a case study in DIY Filmmaking. His short film Thunder Road redefined the path of a festival award winner. After earning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, the short took the internet by storm, bringing Jim and his crew ample exposure and a shot to turn their project into a feature. One would think that having a viral, Grand Jury Prize winning short would be enough to attract the attention of major studios, but despite the fact that they had a whole fifteen minutes of the film they could show off right away, Jim and his producing partner Ben Weissner could not get any big bites from investors. So they took matters into their own hands. The self-produced and largely crowd-funded feature version of Thunder Road premiered at SXSW earlier this year where it, guess what, won the Grand Jury Award for best feature. Now Jim and Ben want to share the knowledge they’ve learned over the course of their experience with young filmmakers across the world and to do so they’ve launched a Short to Feature lab in Malibu. We asked them to give us a rundown of what applicants can expect as well as the skills that they think every filmmaker interested in controlling the entire life of their film should know.
