Today on What's My Frame, I'm joined by award-winning director and producer DeMane Davis. This conversation has so much heart, insight, and encouragement—it's the perfect start to our year. From the way DeMane creates a culture of kindness on her sets to the creative community that has supported her career, this conversation is a beautiful example of following your dreams, preparing for opportunities, and understanding how thoughts become things. Today, DeMane shares favorite stories from QUEEN SUGAR, BRILLIANT MINDS, and a few childhood laughs.DeMane Davis is an award-winning television director, producer, and commercial director who has an overall creative deal with Warner Brothers Television Group. Under this pact, Davis first served as co-executive producer/producing director of Ava DuVernay's DC Comics series "Naomi" for the CW Network. She helmed multiple episodes (including the series finale) and oversaw the show's directing team. Soon after, she directed the pilot and second episode of the NBC missing persons drama "Found" from Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Greg Berlanti. Davis received a Gracies Awards Honorable Mention for her work on "Found" and returned in their final season to direct the penultimate episode. She is now working as Executive Producer/Producing Director on the acclaimed drama series "Brilliant Minds," the TV series inspired by the work of neuroscientist and author Dr. Oliver Sacks, played by Zachary Quinto. In 2020, Davis produced and directed the last two episodes of the four-part Emmy-nominated Netflix limited series "Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker." The period drama starred Octavia Spencer, Blair Underwood and won three NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding TV Movie, Limited Series or Dramatic Special. In 2020 and 2021, she was co-executive producer on the CBS drama "Clarice," the television sequel to the Academy Award winning film "The Silence of the Lambs," and directed the two-part season finale.Davis began her career writing and directing independent features. Both of her films premiered in Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival internationally at Edinburgh. She's best known for "Lift," the story of a "booster" or professional shoplifter, which was selected for the prestigious Sundance Director's and Screenwriter's Labs. It starred Kerry Washington in her first leading role. "Lift" was honored with two Spirit Award nominations before airing originally on Showtime.Davis was working on teleplays and freelancing as an advertising copywriter when the prolific director and producer Ava DuVernay ("ORIGIN," "When They See Us" literally "slipped into her DMs. DuVernay asked her to helm an episode of her groundbreaking series, "Queen Sugar" (OWN). Davis, of course, agreed and arrived at the "Queen Sugar " production office on crutches (who has time for a broken ankle?). Later that summer, DuVernay asked Davis to be Producing Director on the third season of "Queen Sugar." She directed the celebrated premiere where Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) learns he's not the father of his son, as well as two more episodes while overseeing DuVernay's all female, first-time-TV-directing sisterhood. She was also one of a handful of directors asked to return by DuVernay to direct two episodes of the final acclaimed season of "Queen Sugar" in 2022.Davis has directed the GLAAD Media Award nominated series, "The Red Line" (CBS), episodes of "You" and "The Girls on the Bus" for HBO/MAX. She also helmed "For the People," and multiple episodes of fan favorites "How to Get Away with Murder" and "Station 19"When not directing, Davis splits her time between writing and being involved with several philanthropic endeavors including ABCD Boston (an organization dedicated to eradicating poverty), The Innocence Project and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism.

The Dingle Distillery International Film Festival returns this winter to venues around Dingle from 7 – 9 November. Renowned Hollywood screenwriter, director, producer and acclaimed novelist Todd Komarnicki will appear at the festival for ‘Writing and Directing Your Way To Success'. Todd will talk his creative process, pitching tips and working in Tinseltown, from writing the screenplay for Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks blockbuster Sully, to co-producing Christmas hit Elf, and his most recent Hollywood film in 2024, Bonhoeffer, the true story of pastor turned WW2 spy, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. And while America has always had a conflicted history, the goal has been to bridge cultures and forge a united front of prosperity. But is this the case? Particularly among students in college and high school years, the lines are blurry and the conflict is rising. The film is base on the book with the same title, and talks about the disillusionment many young people feel - particularly on college campuses - and how the rhetoric and constant battles are creating a serious mental health crisis in our society. The documentary-style film follows the stories of students from various ethnicities and backgrounds who arrive with wide-eyed anticipation and eventually become despondent and confused. Bille is an illustrious film, television and music video director/producer who has helmed many memorable videos for artists such as Lil' Wayne, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, OutKast, Missy Elliott, TLC, Toni Braxton, Trisha Yearwood and Usher among many others. His feature film debut was Universal Pictures' HONEY starring Jessica Alba and Mekhi Phifer. He then directed MGM's BEAUTY SHOP starring Queen Latifah, Djimon Hounsou, and Kevin Bacon. Some of his other credits include ADDICTED based on the novel by Zane, THE PERFECT MATCH starring Paula Patton, and the entire HONEY film franchise for Universal Home Entertainment. On the television side, Bille recently wrapped a block of episodes on the limited series DEVIL IN DISGUISE: JOHN WAYNE GACY for Peacock and Patrick McManus. He also recently shot ELSBETH for CBS, GREY'S ANATOMY for ABC, and his second episode of YELLOWJACKETS for Showtime. Other credits include BRIDGERTON for Netflix, TRUTH BE TOLD for Apple TV+, WILL TRENT for ABC, as well as the VAMPIRE ACADEMY pilot for Peacock in Spain, and the PAINKILLER pilot for Warner Bros and CW. Sandi DuBowski discusses the one-year anniversary of his film Sabbath Queen, which he spent 21 years making. He reflects on the journey of the 21st-century radical rabbi and how it has shaped their life. He discusses the inspiration behind his film, Tomboychik, the concept of which was developed after conversations with his grandmother. The film is a living video memorial to her spirit; it won several awards, including the Golden Gate award at the San Francisco Film Festival and the Whitney Museum program, and launched Sandi into the film world. Documentary Films and Festivals  Sandi talks about his work as an associate director of the New York Lesbian/Gay Experimental Film Video festival, MIX. He initially worked on a feature film called Fresh Kill and later worked for Planned Parenthood as a researcher and producing videos. After working for Planned Parenthood, he started filming the major feature documentary, Trembling Before G-d, about Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are lesbian or gay. The film had a World Premiere at Sundance, and won two prizes at the Berlin Film Festival. It screened in cinemas and festivals worldwide, and Sandi went on the road for three years, doing outreach and engagement. Sandi concludes by expressing gratitude for the support and funding he received from the Steven Spielberg Righteous Persons Foundation. He also mentions that his film Sabbath Queen has been a significant moment in his life, as he reconnects with classmates from Harvard, high school, elementary school, film, queer, Jewish, and activist circles. The film has been a testament to the power of storytelling and the transformative power of time. Breaking from Traditional Religious Conventions Sandi fell into the world of filmmaking by accident. He worked with great people, including cinematographers and editors, to create a team of creatives. The film "Trembling Before G-d" was a significant leap forward in technical craft and embraced the lives of people who were not in the public realm. The first Orthodox gay Rabbi came out in the film, and the first person from a Hasidic world to come out as lesbian was featured. The film also convinced Orthodox rabbis to speak publicly on the issue, which was a tipping point in the culture. The filmmaker met with Amichai, who was already post-denominational and pushing the boundaries of Orthodoxy. Sandi talks about the film's concept and how it inspired a Muslim man to make a movie on Islam and homosexuality. Filming the Documentary Sabbath Queen Sandi shares the journey of filming Sabbath Queen, which involved following Rabbi Amichai over 21 years. The film took six years to edit due to multiple storylines, nearly 3000 hours of footage, and time spent exploring Amichai's complex identity and his numerous worlds within his rabbinic family. The film was a complicated project, but Sandi and Amichai have remained close friends. The film is Biblical in many ways, as it is a coming of age and a paradigm shift from a thousands-year-old faith to the present. The film aims to address the challenges faced by religion, as well as the rise of authoritarianism and fascism. Sandi believes that creating a film that looks at time and how values can be manifested in our lives, communities, families, houses of worship, and nations is crucial for upholding values and morals. A Documentary Filmmaker's Journey Sandi shares his experiences and lessons learned from his journey as a documentary filmmaker. He explains that his life has been unexpected and doesn't fit neatly into boxes. He also shares his experience with Good Pitch, a platform that focuses on social issue documentaries and collaborations with filmmakers. He has built a strong community around films and the film movement, which has been translated into his work with Sabbath Queen. He believes that film communities intersect with many other communities, creating an outpouring of connection and networks. One of the ways Sabbath Queen is promoting community is through live rituals and gatherings. In Berlin, he hosted a Sabbath Queen Friday night feast with Rabbi Amichai, which encouraged togetherness, peacemaking, and reflection. In San Francisco, they hosted a SoulSpa and in Chicago a Saturday night Let the Light In. Sandi also talks about expanded cinema and the importance of gathering, him co-founding a progressive group called The Creative Resistance with media makers and a Queens Food Caravan. Sandi discusses the importance of having creative collaborators who provide feedback and help in the process of creating a character-driven film. He mentions that it is crucial to have test screenings and feedback screenings to help filmmakers work on their work over time.
