Everyone has a reaction to hearing about God; some will hear of Him with joy, others will gnash their teeth at the message. Rahab confessed the Lord and showed immediate fruit of change by helping the spies escape. Her home was marked by a scarlet cord in the window to identify her house when the city would be overthrown. The life of every believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit. When God's judgment is poured upon the earth, only those with the seal of God will be spared. Does your life bear this seal?

The Scarlet Cord; Joshua 2:1-24

Have you ever felt trapped by a label—something someone called you, or a mistake from your past that stuck? In Joshua 2, we meet Rahab the prostitute, a woman whose entire identity was defined by her brokenness. But Rahab made a bold choice: she believed that “the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.” Her faith led her to protect Israel's spies, and through a scarlet cord in her window, her entire family was saved when Jericho fell. That scarlet cord echoes the blood of the Passover lamb—and ultimately, the blood of Jesus. Your past does not disqualify you from God's future. The labels others give you—or the ones you put on yourself—are not the labels God places on you. Like Rahab, your story can be rewritten by faith in the God who redeems. So, what labels are you still carrying? And how might God want to transform them into a testimony of His grace?"

What is faith? Faith is a scarlet cord. Rahab the harlot had faith in what she heard about the God of Israel and it brought salvation to herself and her household! The story of Christmas is found in five women in Jesus' genealogy. Their stories are the stories of us all. The second woman mentioned in Jesus' genealogy is Rahab. She was a pagan Canaanite prostitute living in Jericho. When the Israelite spies came to spy out the land, she risked her life by hiding them in her house. Because of her faith in God, she was saved when the Israelites conquered Jericho. Rahab put her faith in the true and living God and received life and salvation instead of death and destruction! She was saved by the grace of God through her faith in God, symbolized by the scarlet cord. Regardless of what time you live, God always brings salvation in the same way: by grace alone through faith alone. God reached down from heaven and saved us with a “scarlet thread”—the blood of Jesus. In Christ, God threw us a scarlet-colored “rope” to pull us to safety and redeem us from sin's penalty! Our purpose now is to carry that “scarlet cord” of victory to those who are perishing! As those who have been rescued by the “scarlet cord” from heaven, we are to take that “scarlet cord” from heaven and help rescue others. You never know what God is going to do through you when you extend the scarlet cord of hope and victory to others. You might not see it until years down the road, but you can witness with confidence that God is going to work through you if you are obedient! In today's conversation we're going to walk head-on into a question which plagues many modern Bible readers—the ethicality of the conquest of Canaan. Yes, we're going to go there, and we're going to discuss why God would not only condone, but actually commission the conquest of the land of Canaan. We'll reason and examine our way through the biblical narrative, while also acknowledging that this relationship we have with our omniscient, sovereign God will always require us to trust His character. We'll surrender our questions to the pen of the divine Author who is writing His story, and we'll marvel (as I'm sure Rahab did) at the scarlet thread of grace and mercy which is woven so lovingly throughout the entirety of that story, culminating with the blood of Jesus.
