From Sennacherib, we move on to Hezekiah -- and the discussion of him as a possible messiah, which would have meant Sennacherib was to be part of the "Gog and Magog" battle for final redemption (which clearly didn't happen that way). God does not change, but his purposes unfold – this is what creates linear history. The Bible does not tell its story the way we tell history. It is theological. When we say that the Bible is 'theological,' we mean that it tells its story in a way that emphasises the significance of events from a religious or spiritual perspective, rather than just presenting historical facts. We must be cautious about defending the Bible according to modern notions of factuality. The Bible gives us facts, but it selects facts according to significance and presents a pattern of events that might clash with what a secular historian might come up with. All records of history do this. The Bible is true in that it highlights what is most important in history for us all.

Joyful Non-Compliance. In this episode of the Voxology Podcast, Mike and Tim discuss the significance of synagogue life during the Jewish exile and how it shaped the identity of the Jewish people. They explore the relationship between Jesus and the Herod family, particularly focusing on Herod the Great's dual legacy as a builder and a tyrant. The conversation delves into the prophetic background surrounding Jesus' birth, the political climate of Judea, and how these elements influenced Jesus' teachings and parables. The episode concludes with reflections on the implications of these historical contexts for understanding Jesus' message. What was the complex dynamics of power during the time of Jesus, particularly the Herodian dynasty and its rulers, including Archelaus, Antipas, and Philip? How did Jesus interact with these figures and how were his teachings a form of subversion against the oppressive systems of power? What is D Willy's concept of 'joyful non-compliance' as a response to authority? How does it contrast with 'fearful compliance' that is prevalent in contemporary society? Ultimately, today's episode calls for a deeper understanding of the Kingdom of God and the active role believers can take in promoting its values in a world often dominated by greed and power struggles. Today we have a conversation about rediscovering the true meaning of Christmas. Our guest is AJ Sherrill, author of the book "Rediscovering Christmas." AJ takes us back 2,000 years to unpack the rich cultural context and deeper significance behind the Christmas story that we often miss in our modern celebrations. AJ explains how the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem - the "house of bread" - where he was laid in a feeding trough, is a profound symbol of him being the "bread of life" come to nourish our deepest hungers. He also highlights the stories of characters like Zechariah and Anna, who models patient longing and faithful waiting for the Messiah's arrival. AJ challenges us to approach this Advent season not just as a nostalgic tradition, but as a time to cultivate our own longing for God's kingdom to come in fullness. He encourages us to create space in our hearts to encounter the God who searches for us, even as we search for him. This conversation invites us to rediscover the wonder and significance of Christmas in fresh ways. So join us and rediscover Christmas. All that we know is that we can't keep going on like this. What we don't know is when to make a change, or how. In his work the Secular Age, Charles Taylor talks about the cross pressures of the era. James K. A. Smith distills this large and technical book into a short, relevant page turner titled "The Secular Age." While the term secular has meant different things at different times, or in different contexts, we live in one where secularism has to do with the mechanism of belief. Authenticity has become the dominant factor in the legitimacy of a belief. With a sense of freedom, it brings a different problem: suicide, individual and cultural. And that problem is reflected in the malaise of urgency that weighs on the shoulders of so many: we believe there is something that we ought do, but that is also the one thing we cannot do. And so we find ourselves between the boundaries of fools and cowards. Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

On this Memorial Day holiday, we are encouraged to remember those who have gone before us, sacrificing their lives so that we might experience life in a free country. As you speak to your kids about the meaning of Memorial Day, use it also as an occasion to remind them that it is important to engage in the regular practice of thinking about past history, and the need to remember. The Bible tells us that one of our greatest responsibilities of parents and those who are older is to recount the deeds of the Lord, teaching them what God has done not only in our lives, but throughout biblical history. In Psalm seventy-eight we read a great reminder for today and every day: “I will utter sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” Parents, this is our high calling and high privilege.

It's a big event: our own podcast co-host's first published book: Austin Stevenson, The Consciousness of the Historical Jesus (T&T Clark: 2024). The book discusses questions like: What is the movement called 'the historical Jesus' and how should Christians think about it? How does our own way of doing history depend on our understanding of what it means to be human? How can we read the history of Jesus in a way that transforms our understanding of ourselves? Can the 'historical Jesus' do that? If not, what can? Thanks to Jamie Maule for sound engineering! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/faith-at-the-frontiers/message

Today, we celebrate senior Sunday with our Radite Students and hear Chip Paul, our Student Pastor, deliver a powerful sermon about chasing God's presence over our purpose. What does it truly mean to experience God's presence? Through the story of Moses leading the people of Israel, we learn the difference between presence and purpose. In the stillness of His presence, we can find clarity and direction for our purpose. It's His presence that sets us apart from the rest of the world. Are you experiencing the presence of God? Are you finding your purpose inside His presence? As always, we'd love to take the time to answer any questions you have about Jesus, so reach out today. “The main reason for studying the black presence in the Bible is because if we can't accept that our Bible is a multicultural book, how can we accept multicultural churches? It is difficult to see the black presence in the Bible because you won't read the terms black or African but you will read the terms Ethiopians, Cushites, Egyptians, Hebrews, or other tribal terms. Ethiopia is mentioned 45 times in the Bible; add this to the number of times Egypt is mentioned, and Africa is mentioned more than any other landmass in the Bible. It should also be noted that the "Middle East," including the Holy Land was connected to Africa until 1859 when the Suez Canal was completed and had been referred to North East Africa for the majority of modern history. From Genesis to Revelation there is a great deal of proof that blacks are present throughout the Bible: In the Hebrew, Adam (or Ahdahm) is defined as swarthy, dusky, reddish-brown soil, dark-skinned like a shadow. Aphar: The soil from which Adham was made, meaning: dust, clay, always very black or very dark brown in color. (The Biblical History of Black Mankind by C. McGhee Livers) The Garden of Eden was described in Genesis as having been near a four-river system in the region of the lands of Cush, Havilah, and Asshur, which today would be near the borders of Eastern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. The birthplace of humanity was confirmed when the oldest human remains were found in Ethiopia in 1974. Science and the Bible are often at odds, but one thing both confirm is that the birthplace of humanity was in East Africa. (Eden: The Biblical Garden Discovered in East Africa by Gert Muller) Many of the Hebrew patriarchs married or had children with women from African tribes. Abraham had children with Hagar and Keturah both from African (Hamitic) tribes. Moses married Zippora, who was Ethiopian. Jacob had children with two handmaidens from African tribes, and these children became the patriarchs of two tribes of Israel. Studying the black presence in the Bible can open the door to discussions about racial justice and dispel the myth that the Bible is the "white man's book." It is this myth that has kept many people of color from the gospel. By whitewashing the Bible, we prevent future generations from experiencing the beauty of the biblical text. Black people should know that they have always played a central role in God's plan for humanity and were not an afterthought of the creator.” -https://sojo.net/articles/faith-action/black-presence-bible-uncovering-hidden-ones. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support
