“But this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I will certainly bring my people back again from all the countries where I will scatter them in my fury. I will bring them back to this very city and let them live in peace and safety. They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land. - Jeremiah 32:37-41Jeremiah is a book not for the faint of heart. It's a big book, 52 chapters and with a greater word count than any other book in the Bible. It's a troubling book - the warnings from a prophet of God telling people what is going to befall them if they don't repent and turn back to the God of their ancestors. It's a sad book as it tells of the destruction of Jerusalem. There's no doubt, Jeremiah is a behemoth of an Old Testament book. But, it's not a book to ignore by any means. At its heart, even with the difficult things in the book, Jeremiah is still a book about hope. It's still a book about the faithfulness of God. The passage I read at the beginning from Jeremiah 32 makes that clear. We learn so much about God in this book - it's truly a rich, theological text. But like I said, it's not for the faint of heart so to help us navigate this book today is Dr. Jerry Hwang, author of the ESV commentary on Jeremiah. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles? O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights? Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth.” Isaiah 40:26-28As we enter the book of Isaiah, we are moving from the wisdom literature into the prophets. In many ways it's a good thing that Isaiah is the first of the major prophets we read because it's the most accessible. Isaiah paints a portrait, not just of Israelite history, but of the God who is above it all - the God who is both creator and master of all things, but also close, loving and kind. Isaiah is a long book coming in at 66 chapters, but it is rich with history, the character of God, and hope for the savior that is to come. To help us navigate the book of Isaiah is Dr. Andrew Abernethy Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College and author of not one, not two, but three books on Isaiah. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Develop A Legacy Of Faithfulness

Developing a culture of faithfulness is one of the greatest ways we can build the best future for ourselves, our families, our church and our nation. Faithfulness has been one of the great foundations of this church and has been celebrated recently with the honouring of 50 years of ministry of Pastor Wes Richards. And it is faithfulness across all generations that will now mark the future. Faithfulness will ensure strong families, strong churches and strong nations. Faithfulness will continue and accelerate a godly legacy.   As Christians we are encouraged to be faithful, just as God is faithful in all His ways. We live in a world of much pain and insecurity because of so much unfaithfulness. People are unfaithful in marriage, in business and in every aspect of life. To be unfaithful is to be unreliable, inconsistent and self-serving. To be faithful however means to keep faith and to be steadfast in your commitments and beliefs no matter what temptations or trials you may face. A faithful person is a person who starts out, keeps going and completes the course. One of the greatest keys to true success in life is learning to become a faithful and completely reliable and loyal person. We learn some important lessons from the teaching of Jesus in Luke 16:1-12.    1. Be faithful in the little before the large (Luke 16:10; Matthew 25:14-30; 1 Timothy 3:4) 2. Be faithful in the handling of money before being entrusted with spiritual ‘riches' (Luke 16:11; Luke 19:12-26; Malachi 3:8-10) 3. Be faithful in serving another's ‘ministry' before you have your own (Luke 16:12) Apply  1. Be faithful in the little before the large (Luke 16:10). Jesus emphasised how it is so important to use well the little that you may have (Matthew 25:14-30). Learning to be faithful in small matters is the first step to growth in faithfulness. When someone becomes a Christian, they do not automatically become faithful. Sometimes poor training, lazy habits and bad role models can make a person irresponsible, unpredictable, and undependable. So just as children need to be trained up in such little basics as washing or cleaning your teeth, so disciples need to first learn the basics of Christian behaviour of learning: to follow the standards of the Bible not the world; the disciplines of daily prayer and Bible reading; to receive direction and correction without anger or resentment; to listen as well as to talk; and to consider and care for others not just focussing on yourself. Long before the disciples were preaching to multitudes, they had to learn the basics of getting them organised into smaller groups that they could feed. They then had to learn such practical matters as avoiding waste and collecting the leftovers. In the same way good disciples are developed by first helping their families with such details as helping with carrying the shopping, helping with the washing up and setting up a table for a meeting. Applying yourself to help in small practical matters even when no one is watching is all part of developing faithfulness for greater responsibilities (e.g. Daniel Kolenda with Reinhard Bonkke). How can you do whatever you can to help in the ministry of the church? You can get up early and join the set up team, help stack chairs, serve coffee. Take an opportunity to look after a few people in a small life group by calling and visiting them. Grow a bigger group by doing a great job of caring for the one or few that you already have. And if you want to pastor a big spiritual family well, first learn how to develop your own family (1 Timothy 3:4).   2. Be faithful in the handling of money before being entrusted with spiritual ‘riches' (Luke 16:11). What Jesus is saying is that if you can't look after money well how can you take care of people's souls? Or as Luke 19:12-26 says in the parable of ten servants, it was the ones who wisely used the money they were given who were then given the rule over whole cities. The Bible says a lot about money: how we gain money, how money can be our master or servant, how money can seduce us and ruin us, how money can be withheld or given generously, both to God and to people. Early in Bible history and before the Law, tithes (tenths of earnings) were given by Abraham to Melchizedek. As Abraham was faithful with money, God gave him true eternal wealth: The covenant, descendants, and numerous other blessings. We too can be blessed when we are faithful in our giving of tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:8-10). Tithes and offerings should be given faithfully so that the work of God can move forward without interruption. The faithful giving of core people here through the years has been a major factor in the continuing ministry of the church. Be committed in your giving first with your entire tithe to your local church - the storehouse - and then through the local church with offerings to others. Faithfulness must also be seen in our wise handling of money. We need to pay attention to the creation and acquisition of money. We need to save, to plan, to budget, to invest and to spend money on what the Scriptures emphasise. The Bible tells us to take care of our own families, to give to those who are in need, and to use our money in such a way that it represents an investment in the kingdom of heaven and matters of eternal value. If you want to assess how you are developing in faithfulness, consider carefully how faithful you are in your handling of finance and temporal matters so that you can be entrusted with matters of eternal importance.    3. Be faithful in serving another's ‘ministry' before you have your own (Luke 16:12). In other words, before you launch out in your own ministry, you need to learn from a more experienced person in ministry. This is called apprenticeship or discipleship. As a Christian you are not meant to be proud and ambitious self-made person full of your own ambition, but a God-made person who needs to humbly learn before you can teach. In the Bible Joshua was able to succeed Moses because he had been closely trained by him in proximity over many years. Similarly, Elisha was able to learn from Elijah and Timothy owed his spiritual formation to his spiritual father Paul. The disciples were trained up over three years not just by the teaching of Jesus but by close relationship, constant observation and being willing to be challenged and corrected. The goal of discipleship is never to make a disciple dependent on the mentor but to form them to be able to develop their own ministries with the same faithfulness that they have had to learn. This then is the way we will multiply many faithful leaders in this church. Faithfulness is one of the greatest ways we can develop the best legacy for every generation. So be faithful in the small before the big, be faithful with your money and be faithful in learning to serve as a godly disciple. Great things will happen when we are faithful.

It's a book not commonly taught from because of its intimate nature, but I was grateful to find somebody who is actually currently teaching through this book at his church. Dr. James Hamilton is Professor of Biblical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is the Senior Pastor at Kenwood Baptist Church. Not only does it have some of my favorite verses, but it's such a relatable look at one man's struggles. Then Job replied to the LORD:2 “I know that you can do anything,    and no one can stop you.3 You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?'    It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about,    things far too wonderful for me.4 You said, ‘Listen and I will speak!    I have some questions for you,    and you must answer them.'5 I had only heard about you before,    but now I have seen you with my own eyes.6 I take back everything I said,    and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.”Job 42:1-6The book of Job is perhaps the most unique book in the Old Testament. Up until this point we had been reading narrative accounts of historical events, but Job ushers us into new territory as a wisdom literature book. It tracks events that happen in the life of a man named Job . . . but it does leave you to wonder if these events really happened as written, or if this is a different type of literature exercise altogether. Most importantly for the book of Job though is what it teaches us about God and about ourselves and there's a central question at the very heart of this book that will completely change and shape how you read it. To help us navigate the book of Job is Dr. John Walton. Dr. Walton is professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Wheaton College and other of many books including How to Read Job and the NIV Application Commentary on Job.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. On this second occasion, while they were drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, “Tell me what you want, Queen Esther. What is your request? I will give it to you, even if it is half the kingdom!” Queen Esther replied, “If I have found favor with the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my request, I ask that my life and the lives of my people will be spared.  For my people and I have been sold to those who would kill, slaughter, and annihilate us. If we had merely been sold as slaves, I could remain quiet, for that would be too trivial a matter to warrant disturbing the king.” – Esther 7:2-4Esther holds an interesting place in the Old Testament. It's a post-exilic narrative similar to Ezra and Nehemiah, but rather than focusing on the Jewish community returning to Jerusalem, it tells the story of some of the Jewish remnant in Susa – people who for one reason or another chose not to return to Jerusalem. In many ways, Esther reads like a thriller. There's a nefarious plot, divine providence, and bold actions culminating in a decisive moment for Esther herself and the Jewish people. But, at its heart, Esther is a very relatable story. There are no demonstrative miracles, just people making the choice to stand up for a cause important to them and the God who is ever-present, even if not specifically named. To help us navigate the book of Esther is Dr. Iain Duguid, Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary and author of a commentary on Esther. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love him and obey his commands, listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess that we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned! We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses.“Please remember what you told your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful to me, I will scatter you among the nations. But if you return to me and obey my commands and live by them, then even if you are exiled to the ends of the earth, I will bring you back to the place I have chosen for my name to be honored.'“The people you rescued by your great power and strong hand are your servants. O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me.” Nehemiah 1:5-10The book of Nehemiah continues the post-exilic story of the people of Israel that we started in Ezra. The people of Israel had been living in exile and the temple of Jerusalem had been destroyed. Yet now they had been allowed to return to rebuild the temple. Nehemiah is a book about the workers, about the real people who took up God's call to rebuild the temple. It's a book about putting God first, about leadership amidst trials and opposition – but ultimately it's a book about the truth that as much as we can build and rebuild buildings, it doesn't take the place of letting God build his temple in your heart. To help us navigate the book of Nehemiah is Dr. Dean Ulrich, author of the book Now and Not Yet about Ezra and Nehemiah.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Praise the Lord, the God of our ancestors, who made the king want to beautify the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem! And praise him for demonstrating such unfailing love to me by honoring me before the king, his council, and all his mighty nobles. I felt encouraged because the gracious hand of the Lord my God was on me.” Ezra 7:27-28The book of Ezra continues the narrative of the people of Israel into what is known as the post-exilic period. When we left things in 2 Chronicles, the king of Babylon had conquered Jerusalem and the temple had been destroyed. But the final part of the book ends with a glimpse of what's to come. 2 Chronicles 36:23 says, “This is what King Cyrus of Persia says, ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. He has appointed me to build him a Temple at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Any of you who are the Lord's people may go there for this task. And may the Lord your God be with you.” That then ushers us right into the heart of the story of Ezra. Ezra 1 begins with this same retelling of Cyrus's words and then continues the story from there as we the Zerubbabel lead a group of exiles back to Jerusalem followed by Ezra's group. What follows is a story of rebuilding, opposition, and restoration. Ezra is a book that doesn't often get the credit it deserves as it sits alongside Nehemiah, but it is a beautiful picture of the God of continued second-chances and a people who so desperately need them. To help us navigate the book of Ezra is Dr. Tiberius Rata, Associate Dean and Professor of Old Testament at Grace College and author of a commentary on Ezra. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be able to stand firm. Believe in his prophets, and you will succeed.' After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang: Give thanks to the Lord; his faithful love endures forever.” – 2 Chronicles 20:20-212 Chronicles, the second part of the complete volume known as Chronicles, continues the retelling of the story we saw in 1 and 2 Kings. As we talked about in the 1 Chronicles episode, Chronicles is like a different vantage point look at the same events as Kings. But as we talk about in today's episode, the vantage point allows us to identify and focus on some beautiful themes – particularly what it means to live with God at the center of your life. 2 Chronicles takes us back to King Solomon, the Temple, the dividing of the kingdom, military victories, and the many good and bad kings of age. To help us navigate 2 Chronicles is Dr. Carol Kaminski, senior professor of Old Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and founder of Casket Empty, bible studies that trace God's plan of redemption through the entire Bible, and author of a commentary on Chronicles. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O Lord God! What more can I say to you about the way you have honored me? You know what your servant is really like. For the sake of your servant, O Lord, and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known.” – 1 Chronicles 17:16-19 The book of Chronicles, broken into 1 and 2 Chronicles, holds an interesting place in the Old Testament. When we finished the book of Kings, we were left with a back and forth tale of the divided kingdom between Israel and Judah seeing story after story of terrible king to terrible king, with occasional bright spots. 1 Chronicles, the next book of the Bible, goes back and tells much of the same story again, but from a different perspective. We once again read about King David, but it's as if we are getting a different vantage point to their reigns. 1 Chronicles is a fascinating book beginning with a series of genealogies, the death of Saul and the rise of David, military victories, the Ark of the Covenant, the role and duties of those who served God, and much more but, at its heart, it's a book about what it means to live a God-centered, worship-filled life. “Fifty men from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan River. Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground. When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.” And Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.” - 2 Kings 2:7-9The book of 2 Kings picks up right where 1 Kings left off. The kingdom of Israel is divided into two kingdoms, Israel and Judah, and the prospects for God's people seem to wax and wane on the different leaders to come to power in each of these regions. Let's be clear, most of the leaders are, to put it mildly, not good. But there are a few bright spots too. In 2 Kings we also see Elijah taken to heaven and ascension of Elisha as we heard in the passage I read at the beginning of this episode. Trust me, you'll want to stay tuned later in the episode when we talk about Elisha – he's such a fun, interesting figure in the Bible. 2 Kings is fascinating because it toggles back and forth from Israel to Judah and back, all the while pointing us to a God who remains sovereign even when the kings of this earth turn away from him. To help us navigate the book of 2 Kings is Dr. Philip Ryken. "We love the Jesus of the manger because He’s cute and cuddly. That’s why Christmas is so popular. But Easter? That’s messy—there’s blood, a cross, and a spiritual battle. It’s not as easy to celebrate." In this session we'll move in on how to read the Bible - Joshua, in particular - faithfully. Uncover the depth and richness of the book of Joshua as we explore God’s sovereignty, holiness, and faithfulness in leading His people. This message helps us approach Joshua not just as a historical narrative, but as a theological account that points us to God’s ultimate plan in Christ. Along the way, we’ll address difficult questions and learn how to trust God, even in the challenging parts of Scripture. "The Bible was written for us, but it wasn’t originally written to us. You don’t open the Bible and see, ‘Dear Jennifer.’ There was an original audience, and we must read it with that in mind."

“Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, ‘How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!' But the people were completely silent.” – 1 Kings 18:21The book of 1 Kings marks the transition from the reign of King David to the reign of Solomon. The nation of Israel is now firmly in the age of monarchy and Solomon is ready to not just take over his father's mantle but also to build the temple his father had wanted to build. However, as is usually the case, things do not go smoothly and Solomon's reign ends up being a rollercoaster ride. 1 Kings also introduces us to Elijah, one of the most fascinating prophets in the Bible. This book, full of accounts of Solomon's wisdom, Solomon's palace, the ark of the covenant, the Queen of Sheba, Elijah's miracles and his defeat of the prophets of Baal, this full and robust book, is at its heart a book about God – who the one true God is. To help us navigate the book of 1 Kings is Dr. Iain Provan, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Regent College and author of the Understanding the Bible Commentary on 1 & 2 Kings. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And now, Sovereign Lord, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! Do you deal with everyone this way, O Sovereign Lord?” – 2 Samuel 7:18-19In 1 Samuel, we were introduced to a new cast of characters in the story of Israel – and a new season of change. The people of Israel demanded a king and, despite God's warnings through the prophet Samuel, they were given Saul, the first king of Israel. But all was not well and soon God's anointing turns from Saul to David. 1 Samuel ends with the death of Saul and 2 Samuel then picks up the story of David's reign as king. 2 Samuel is a complex book of palace intrigue, wars, adultery, murder, repentance – all wrapped around these themes of who is the real king and what does it really mean to be a man after God's own heart. To help us navigate this book is Dr. Heath Thomas. Dr. Thomas is the president of Oklahoma Baptist University, an Old Testament Professor, and author of the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary: Exalting Jesus in 1 & 2 Samuel. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. 1 Samuel 3:8-111 Samuel, the 9th book of the Old Testament, is without a doubt one of my favorite books of the Bible. Continuing the narrative of God's people, Israel, we transition from the time of the Judges into a new season – but, as is with the case of most of Israel's history, all was not to go so easily. 1 Samuel contains a lot of well-known stories: the calling of Samuel, the anointing of Saul, the anointing of David, David and Goliath, and so on, but it's what we learn about God and about ourselves through this book that make it so fascinating. To help us navigate 1 Samuel is Dr. David Jensen, Professor of Theology at Austin Seminary and author of a theological commentary on 1 & 2 Samuel. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back to your mothers' homes. And may the Lord reward you for your kindness to your husbands and to me." But Ruth replied, “Don't ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” Ruth 1:8, 16. The Book of Ruth, the 8th book in the Old Testament, is surely one that stands apart from everything we've read so far in the Bible. We've been reading epic stories of nations, but Ruth is a little shining jewel that focuses in on one little family – really just something that happened in the lives of 3 connected individuals. While it's a short book, only 4 chapters, it is not one to be ignored or forgotten. We learn so much about God in how he works in the lives of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz – and yet as with all Scripture there is always still much more goodness to reap. To help us navigate the book of Ruth is Dr. Eric Redmond, Professor of Bible and Executive Director of the Moody Theological Seminary Center for Compelling Biblical Preaching, and author of the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary on Ruth. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. "Whenever the LORD raised up a judge over Israel, he was with that judge and rescued the people from their enemies throughout the judge's lifetime. For the LORD took pity on his people, who were burdened by oppression and suffering. But when the judge died, the people returned to their corrupt ways, behaving worse than those who had lived before them. They went after other gods, serving and worshiping them. And they refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways." – Judges 2:18-19. The book of Judges, the 7th book in the Bible, is a fascinating look at the life of Israel, now in the land of Canaan. It's a book of tribes, a book of land, but ultimately it's a book about God and his people. Moses has died. Joshua dies in the beginning of chapter 2 of this book, and now the people are left to make the choice for themselves of whom they are going to follow. The influence of the Canaanite people is strong and we see quickly that Israel falls into disobeying the Lord. The verse immediately following Joshua's death says “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.” But thank God that he would send judges to remind Israel of who he was and is and is to come. Judges is a rich, episodic book where we see Deborah and Gideon and Samson and many others wrestle, some better than others, with how to point the people of Israel back to God. To help us navigate the book of Judges is Dr. Kenneth Way. Dr. Way is the Professor and Chair of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology and has written a commentary on the book of Judges. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “You have seen everything the LORD your God has done for you during my lifetime. The LORD your God has fought for you against your enemies . . . Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the LORD your God has come true. Not a single one has failed . . . If you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 23:3, 14; 24:15. The Book of Joshua, the 6th book of the Bible and the first book after the Pentateuch, begins a new chapter in the history of God and his people. Moses the patriarch has died and God now charges Joshua to lead the people of Israel into the Promised Land. The years and decades of wandering is done: God's people can now finally enter into the land He had called them to. However, it's not just as simple as walking across a river – there are many obstacles that await them and that is what we see in the book of Joshua. Joshua reads like an epic story in and of itself. It's in this book that we see God's miracle at the Jordan river, that we meet Rahab and how she protects the Israelite spies, that the Israelites come up against the mighty walls of Jericho and watch them crumble – it's a book full of battles and renewed covenants and the decisions of what is to become of the promised land, and then, finally, the declaration read at the beginning that as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. To help us navigate the book of Joshua is Dr. Richard Hess. Dr. Hess is the Distinguished Professor of Old Testament at Denver Seminary and author of a commentary on Joshua. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. In today's conversation we'll be back in the Conquest era of the Bible as Joshua and the Israelites take their first steps into the promised land. We'll see that there were two giant obstacles—a raging river and an impenetrable wall—between the Israelites and the first place God called them to go; and we'll wonder at the truth that God often calls us to confront impossible obstacles along the path toward his will. We'll study the miracles of the river and the wall and see how God calls the Israelites to take faith-filled steps of obedience before he performs the miracle—a pattern we'll undoubtedly experience in our own lives as well. We'll address the anomaly that God's ways often seem foolish in the eyes of the world; and, once again, we'll discover the undeniable faithfulness of the God we serve—to his promises, to his people, and to his redeemed. So, pull up a chair at our table, and let's dive into the conversation.

In today's conversation we're going to walk head-on into a question which plagues many modern Bible readers—the ethicality of the conquest of Canaan. Yes, we're going to go there, and we're going to discuss why God would not only condone, but actually commission the conquest of the land of Canaan. We'll reason and examine our way through the biblical narrative, while also acknowledging that this relationship we have with our omniscient, sovereign God will always require us to trust His character. We'll surrender our questions to the pen of the divine Author who is writing His story, and we'll marvel (as I'm sure Rahab did) at the scarlet thread of grace and mercy which is woven so lovingly throughout the entirety of that story, culminating with the blood of Jesus. So, pull up a chair at our table, and let's dive into the conversation.

If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Today we are picking back up where we left off last year in our Thru the Bible series as we begin our journey into the book of Joshua and, with that, into the next era of the Bible—the Conquest Era. But before we get too far down that road, we're going to back up a bit and look at the events which positioned and qualified Joshua to become God's chosen vessel to lead His people into the promised land. We'll see that with most good leaders, there's a whole backstory of repeated faithfulness—and lessons learned—which trained and propelled them to that place of leadership, and we'll discuss how our own faithfulness and lessons learned train and propel us forward as well. So, pull up a chair at our table, and let's dive into the conversation.

A Beautiful Day Devotional Podcast

Today Pastor Jeff will will share from one of the Heroes in the Bible - Joshua. And what made Joshua a hero? Joshua served The Lord with all his heart and obeyed Him. Joshua 24:15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

The Empowering Of The Spirit   In this episode Pastor Jeff will talk about the Holy Spirit's empowering ministry. He supplies the needed power to live the Christian life and to offer any kind of service you are involved in. Living and serving in Christian ministry requires His resources, not ours. Ability that we do not have within ourselves. But God shares it with us through the Holy Spirit.    The number one way to be equipped in biblical counseling is to meditate the word of God, to know more about the scripture. To know more the word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. We want a ministry of the Word and the Spirit.    Understanding the Truth in the Bible   Joshua 1:8 says, "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”    A person seeking counsel will need to understand that the Holy Spirit is working with them, in them and upon them - as described in the Scripture. It has to be the power of the spirit that brings boldness, empowerment, and spiritual strength.   The Bible provides us with a variety of words to draw upon. This is important. There are several terminologies that we learn from culture that become a habitual part of our conversations. We need to ‘unlearn' the world's way of thinking and communicating. Let's make sure you're using the same terminology that God uses in the Bible. We need to study and think about the Bible if we want to develop biblical thinking and a biblical method of explanation. In reality, we can instruct people with Bible verses.   The Holy Spirit as “With”, “In”, and “Upon”   With - Acts 1:5 In - Romans 8:9 Upon - Acts 1:8 ___________________________________ Partner With Biblical Counseling Academy When you support The Biblical Counseling Academy through financial giving, you partner with us in what God is doing through BCA, from underwriting student scholarships, to helping in the production of various biblical teaching resources (ebooks, podcasts, courses, in-person seminars, summits, online symposiums, webinars, and digital ministry), ministry tables at various conferences and churches, office matters, and much more.  As the Lord leads you to invest, BCA is able to continue in proclaiming the sufficiency of Christ and His Word to Christians at home and abroad, making disciples of Jesus Christ through the warning and teaching found in God's word (Colossians 1:28).
