Pure religion, the sermon argues, involves two main things: listening intently to God's word and living it out obediently and intentionally. It emphasizes the importance of actively engaging with God's word and allowing it to transform behavior, leading to a life that reflects Christ's teachings and character.

Have you ever tried to convince yourself of something? Here's an example: Due to our occasional "stinking thinking", our mode of thinking might be a little on the negative side at times. The world around us tells us that if we turn to self-help books, videos, or teachings so that we can change our direction of thinking into the contrary. Although this might help a little, when we do this we are actually "kidding" (fooling) ourselves into something that is not definite. In today's teaching of our continuing series "Faith & Action" our study of the book of James, Pastor Ben teaches us about the importance of turning to God's Word (aka the Bible) so that we can get a true heart, mind, and spirit changing experience every time that we read it. With God's Word we are never kidding, fooling, or trying to convince ourselves of anything, rather we are allowing God to come into our hearts and change us for His purposes. James addressed this type of behavior in scripture, and calls for people to be both “Listeners and Doers” of the Word. It’s one thing to read about scripture and hear from God, but are we ready to actually DO everything he tells us to…or what just feels comfortable to do?

Alex Kocman brings a sermon from God's Word on James 1:19-27 and the effects of God's Word in our lives. He discusses anger, which does not accomplish the righteousness of God, and how to obey God's Word.

As Christians, we take care to listen to the Word of God. We listen to sermons at church, podcasts, conferences, and a myriad of other ways. But what do we do with this Word? James has a caution for us in James 1. Listen in as we explore what James has to say to us today.

Real, authentic religion has never been mere ritual and ceremony to God. It is loving the vulnerable, lifting the hurting, and making life worthwhile in the name of Jesus.

This week we continue our sermon series on James and break down what he believed real faith entails.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. James 1:27

Let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.

One of the major pressure points we face is learning to be people of action. Often we hear from God on something specific in our life, but we simply put it into our “interesting information” box. Over time without application, change doesn’t come.

We are continuing today our study of the letter from James that we are calling Faith in Gear. Last week our passage ended with verse 18 where we saw that God is telling a story, doing a work, and we are the product, the first fruit of that work; and in that we are loved by God more than we can even grasp. This truth was a source of encouragement as we ended a passage that looked at two all-pro tacklers of our faith: trials and temptations. But what ended last week as a source of encouragement will serve as a form of measurement today. God is telling a story. Am I cooperating with Him to move the story forward?

This week’s question is how do I know myself? James calls us to have a consistent identity where our beliefs are reflected in our actions. We know ourselves, not in private piety but in meeting Jesus in the tumble of life.
