From “In the Beginning” to Amen // True Religion Have You Ever Wondered, What Pleases God? Isaiah 58:3-12(ESV)“Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?” Religious Activity Can Hide a Heart Far from God's Heart. God's Heart (Light) Is Revealed in How We Treat People. Fasting Isn't Merely Emptying Yourself of Food. It's Learning to Empty Yourself for Others. God Turns Surrounded People into Workers of Restoration. Jeremiah 22:3-5 (NLT)“This is what the Lord says: Be fair-minded and just. Do what is right! Help those who have been robbed; rescue them from their oppressors. Quit your evil deeds! Do not mistreat foreigners, orphans, and widows. Stop murdering the innocent! If you obey me, there will always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne here in Jerusalem. The king will ride through the palace gates in chariots and on horses, with his parade of attendants and subjects. But if you refuse to pay attention to this warning, I swear by my own name, says the Lord, that this palace will become a pile of rubble.” James 1:27 (NLT)“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Romans 8:29 (ESV)“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Romans 8:29-30 (MSG)“God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. After God made that decision of what his children should be like, he followed it up by calling people by name. After he called them by name, he set them on a solid basis with himself. And then, after getting them established, he stayed with them to the end, gloriously completing what he had begun.” Mark 2:27 (NLT)“Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.” Matthew 5:17-22 (NIV)“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore, anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” God Cares More About Your Availability, And He Does About Your Capability.

Have you ever mistaken church performance for true religion? In this Sunday message, Pastor Donnie McClurkin delivers a bold and direct word rooted in James 1:19-27, calling the church back to authentic faith. Drawing a clear line between hearing the word and doing it, Pastor McClurkin challenges believers to examine whether their faith has become shaped more by public opinion, popularity, and performance than by the unchanging truth of Scripture. Pastor McClurkin addresses the shifts he has witnessed in the modern church, from the loss of accountability and correction to the rise of manipulation disguised as ministry. He reminds the congregation that God's word is not up for debate, is not swayed by culture, and does not bend to convenience. True religion, he declares, is not found in a title, a platform, or a performance, but in a clean heart, a surrendered life, and genuine care for those in need. True religion is not a performance. It is a life surrendered, a heart made clean, and a faith that does what the word says. Sermon Scripture: James 1:19-27 We stream live every Sunday at 11 am and every Wednesday at 8 pm. James 1: 1 - 18
In this episode, we hear from Morgan, a 28-year-old third-generation former Jehovah's Witness who describes his upbringing as part of the "weak sheep"—a family that believed the doctrine but often struggled with the rigid spiritual routine. Morgan opens up about a childhood defined by a pervasive fear of God, whom he viewed not as a loving father, but as a "homicidal maniac" prone to global destruction. He details the psychological toll of leading a double life as a teenager—selling pot while simultaneously knocking on doors for the ministry—and the "Zoro" highlighting technique he used to fake a spiritual routine he never truly felt. The narrative shifts to Morgan's early adulthood, marked by a high-pressure marriage at 19 and a subsequent mental breakdown that was met with institutional bullying rather than empathy from congregation elders. Morgan shares the chilling details of the "assassination letter" sent by his former congregation, which weaponized his medical information regarding autism to sabotage his reputation in a new city. Ultimately, it was a secular podcast about spiritual deconstruction that provided the mirror he needed to see through the "scam". Morgan's story is one of incredible resilience, culminating in a midnight escape with only a backpack and the eventual liberation of all three siblings from the organization. Key Takeaways The "Assassination Letter": Morgan reveals how elders weaponized his personal medical diagnosis of autism, including it in a formal "letter of non-recommendation" to ensure he was viewed as a "problem" by his new congregation. The Ear Biscuits Catalyst: In a unique "waking up" moment, Morgan realized he was in a cult while listening to the Ear Biscuits podcast (by YouTubers Rhett and Link), finding that their descriptions of "false religion" perfectly mirrored his own experiences within the "True Religion". Performance vs. Mental Health: When Morgan suffered a mental breakdown at 19, the elders' response was to "kick the crap" out of him emotionally, treating his suicidal ideation as a lack of respect for God rather than a medical crisis. The "Zoro" Technique: To survive the constant scrutiny of a performance-based community, Morgan mastered "performative nonsense," such as highlighting his study materials at random to appear prepared for meetings he was mentally checked out of. Generational Liberation: Despite being told the "world" would chew him up and spit him out, Morgan's exit was supported by "worldly" friends and paved the way for his younger brother to also leave, effectively "changing the family tree". Direct Quotes "I view God as a scary being… I guess I just always had this feeling that I would never match up to the standards". "They lied to us and they did it with smiles on their faces and they had the hands out for their for our money. Like this was a scam". "I left with a backpack, no money, no possessions… The grass is greener on the other side. It's you told your whole life that it wasn't, but… the grass is greener". What if humanity once shared a deeper connection to truth, God, and each other — a natural state that existed before religion became divided? In this thought-provoking episode, Aba Al-Sadiq explores the ancient concept of Fitra — the original divine nature of mankind spoken about in Islam and echoed across multiple world religions and spiritual traditions. Through the Quran, Hadith, Biblical passages, and hidden mystical teachings, this episode uncovers the forgotten meaning of human nature, truth, purity, and spiritual perception. Journey through powerful discussions surrounding the Tower of Babel, the origin of language, the Garden of Eden, heart-based communication, dreams, divine inspiration, and the lost connection between humanity and God. This episode connects Islamic theology, spirituality, Babylon, Adam and Eve, prophecy, consciousness, and ancient wisdom traditions in a way rarely discussed. If you are interested in religion, spirituality, Islam, hidden history, esoteric knowledge, the Mahdi, consciousness, or the mysteries of human nature, this is an episode you do not want to miss.
In a culture that often equates God's blessing with comfort, success, and prosperity, James offers a radically different vision of faith. He teaches that trials and difficulties are not signs of God's absence but opportunities for growth, producing wisdom, perseverance, and spiritual maturity.

This past Sunday Pastor Will gave a sermon titled "True Religion" where he deals with what our lives should begin to look like if we have been saved by the grace of God through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Having pointed to ways we deceive ourselves about the state of our spirituality, James reveals three signs of true religion: our speech, our compassion, and our holiness.

In this episode of The Choral Director's Toolbox, guest presenter Dr. Jamea Sale explores "Lifelong Singing: Helping Older Singers Thrive." Drawing on voice science research and personal experience, Dr. Sale examines the physical, vocal, and social dimensions of aging that affect choral participation. She offers practical strategies for supporting older singers through thoughtful rehearsal design, effective warm-ups, accommodations for hearing and mobility challenges, and meaningful performance opportunities. Most importantly, she reminds us that musical growth, learning, and artistic contribution do not end with age—they continue throughout a lifetime of singing. In today's listener question, a high school choral teacher asks why Dr. William Baker has long championed the arrangements of Alice Parker. Dr. Baker reflects on Parker's remarkable gift for authenticity, explaining how her settings of Sacred Harp music, spirituals, and folk songs illuminate the essence of the original material while preserving its character and spirit. Today's inspiration is Alice Parker's masterful arrangement of "Wondrous Love," performed by The William Baker Festival Singers under the direction of Christine Freeman from the 2019 Amber Waves recording "True Religion." A beloved example of Parker's artistry, the work combines expressive beauty with profound respect for the American folk tradition. Join us for a thoughtful conversation about healthy aging, lifelong musicianship, and the enduring joy of singing in community. There are plenty of vulnerable and hurting people who not only do not believe in God or follow him, they make choices that go against him and his ways. I'm asking if you believe that there are vulnerable people crossing our paths whose vulnerability is because of their choices. What do we do then?
James 1:25-26 - This message explores what genuine faith looks like according to James 1:26–27, emphasising that true religion is not outward appearance but inward transformation expressed through action.

We live in a cultural moment where people are longing for wisdom, yet increasingly uncertain where to find it. James' letter speaks to this longing&mdashnot with vague spiritual sentiment, but with direct, practical wisdom for forming resilient lives of faith grounded in Jesus, the embodiment of God's wisdom.

What is true religion? In this message from Pastor John Lindell, we discover from James 1 that true religion is revealed in how we speak, how we care for those in need, and how we guard our lives from the world's influence. Our prayer is that you would not merely listen to God's Word, but live it out daily with integrity, love, and wholehearted devotion to Christ.
