Celeste Ng is a writer based in Cambridge, MA. Celeste's first novel, 2014's Everything I Never Told You, is, without exaggeration, one of the most important books of my life. When I read it in 2016, it gave me my first real glimpse at what representation in fiction could mean, and it was revelatory. Celeste's newest novel, which was just released this week, is called Little Fires Everywhere, and I was thrilled to get the chance to talk with her about it. In our conversation we talked about both books, about the importance of representation in media and culture, our shared obsession with Hamilton, and about Celeste's fascination with family roles. For the second segment, Celeste talked about how she got over her phobia of octopuses. (Conversation recorded July 27, 2017. Originally aired September 13, 2017.) If you read about creativity online at all you’ll likely have seen the terms “growth mindset” and “fixed mindset”. But they are often presented in terms of creativity in business, which means to a person like myself that pursues my creative passions as a hobby or side gig, we may have glossed over the buzzwords thinking they don’t apply to us. I read an interesting article a while back that essentially said if you want to keep your art meaningful you, in essence, have to avoid “making it” as an artist. My first thought was to rally against this notion, but after further thought the point may have merit. ----more---- LINKS: Destruction vocalist on Metallica Article Listen Anywhere! How many times do you feel completely stuck with your creative pursuits? The problem is that you are likely too narrowly focused with your creativity and are simply “over training”. ----more---- I believe that every one of us is creative. As such, to grow as a creative we have to treat our creativity like a muscle. Maya Angelou once said, “You can't use up creativity, the more you use, the more you have.”. This is ultimately true in my experience. BUT that doesn’t mean that our creativity comes in just one form. If you think of creativity as being similar to a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets. But if you only train one muscle, the rest of your body gets out of whack. That’s why it’s important to practice many different types of creativity, or creativity cross training. Don’t believe me, give a listen to the episode and we’ll talk some more after! As we are chasing our dreams, it’s important to remember the importance of celebrating the small victories. ----more---- Small victories are those things that we often just brush right past because they aren’t a “big deal”. But it’s very important to be present enough to recognize the fact that we DID accomplish something, no matter how big or small it may seem. I’ve come up with a challenge of sorts for you, we’re calling it “Zoink’s Challenge” as a throwback to the previous episode. The idea is simple: Set one goal for yourself at the start of each week. Something you can accomplish within that one week period. Write the goal down and at the end of the week(or whenever you hit that goal during the week) make a brief note about how things went with hitting that goal. You don’t have to get super detailed, just some info about any pitfalls or particular successes that you may have had while hitting that goal. At the end of the year you’ll have a book full of FIFTY TWO goals that you smashed in the last year! Talk about motivation to keep going! Listen Anywhere! OFFICIAL Adventures in Creativity Merch! Being it’s the holiday season I wanted to give you something a little lighter this week that you can enjoy with your family! Hans Zimmer : Live in Prague is a shining example of how all of the hard work pays off, allowing masterful creatives to just enjoy creating at an ultra high level. ----more---- The Hans Zimmer : Live in Prague concert is one of my favorite concert videos of all time. Here’s what it’s all about, courtesy of Netflix: “In this concert film, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer performs his most iconic movie scores to a sell-out crowd at the O2 Arena in Prague.” This concert film was released in 2017 and not only does it feature a beautiful, family friendly musical experience, it show-cases artists at the top of their games doing the unthinkable. You guessed it, they are HAVING FUN creating and performing for the audience. The thing is, they can only do that because of the hard work they have put in behind the scenes to truly learn their craft. It’s a common trap that we’ve all fallen into. Social media attention and our desire for more of it starts to take over and suddenly we lose our creative voice because we are creating for the algorithm of whatever platforms we are using to share our work. ----more---- If that wasn’t already a bummer enough, we begin to let that algorithm and how many likes/followers/shares/etc. dictate our feelings of self worth as creatives. We have all been there, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It literally happens to the best of us. The thing is, many are unable to recognize when they hit that point and ultimately they burn out… worse they let it impact their own personal mental health to a degree that it takes them to the deepest, darkest places in their mind. This is why it’s so vitally important we learn to recognize when we are slipping and learn to stop letting some random social media platforms algorithm determine our self worth. Listen Anywhere! Photographer Jess T. Dugan is one of my favorite contemporary portrait artists, whose work explores issues of gender, sexuality, identity, and community. Jess's 2015 book Every Breath We Drew is a favorite of mine, and I was pleased to be able to discuss that book with her, as well as her recent series To Survive On This Shore, photographs and interviews with transgender and gender non-conforming people over the age of fifty. We had a great conversation about her artistic process, how she approaches making a portrait, and how her tools inform her work. For the second segment, Jess chose "golden hour" as her subject, the time just before sunset when the light is both striking and rapidly changing. (Conversation recorded May 8, 2017. Binh Danh is a photographer based in San Jose, CA. Using both historical photographic processes and his unique chlorophyll prints—using photosynthesis to embed images into leaves—Binh makes haunting and resonant images about war, aftermath, landscape, and memory. In our conversation, Binh and I talked about his creative process, his interest in history, and the deep connections between all things. Then in the second segment we took a moment to acknowledge the recent passing of legendary photographer Robert Frank, then talked about the aesthetics of smoke. Helen Zaltzman is the host of the podcasts Answer Me This!, The Allusionist, and Veronica Mars Investigations. The Allusionist is one of my favorite podcasts, one that I never miss an episode of, an informative and entertaining and often deeply empathetic look at how we use language. In our conversation, Helen and I talked about her interest in language, her process in creating her shows, and the importance of the podcasting community. Then for the second segment, Helen and I talked about visible mending techniques. (Conversation recorded August 12, 2019.)
