“Do you think this Eric Frankenstein is into crypto?” “This Frankenstein probably invented crypto” “Frank-coin?” National security journalist Nicholas Slayton joins me to talk about James Gunn's DC animated series for HBO, Creature Commandoes. We've got gothic horror, geopolitics and an impressive soundtrack. This episode opens with a spoiler-free conversation on whether the show is worth your time before diving in for a conversation about those who the law does not protect, disability metaphors and more. Nicholas Slayton is a Los Angeles-based journalist covering the "panic beat" --- inequality, war, climate change and protests. Send us a textWho knew that the breakthrough moment of AI sentience would come from interacting with an annoying neo-Luddite?After failing to raise a single dollar for PCI's newest initiative — the $350 billion Transdisciplinary Institute for Phalse Prophet Studies and Education (TIPPSE) —  Jason, Rob, and Asher devise the only profitable pitch for raising capital: using AI technology to cure the loneliness that technology itself causes. The only problem is that AI chatbots won't talk to us, as evidenced by Asher's experience of being blocked by an AI “friend.” So Asher turns to the flesh-and-blood author of Blood in the Machine, Brian Merchant, to discuss the rise of the neo-Luddite movement — the only people who might be able to stand your humble Crazy Town hosts. Brian Merchant is a writer, reporter, and author. He is currently reporter in residence at the AI Now Institute and publishes his own newsletter, Blood in the Machine, which has the same title as his 2023 book. (Terrifying Tater Tosser) *** It began with a blast the power of a nuclear bomb, lights filled the skies, a fireball the size of the moon streaked across the sky. But this wasn't a UFO or anything paranormal or supernatural. This was all man-made – and it was only the beginning of something much more sinister that was planned. Probably due to the fact that he kept making up false identifies for himself, and getting into trouble with those identities. In this episode, Danielle Melton, Founder of MOTHERboard Society, and I visit about our experience attending the ALT Summit Conference for the first time. Many of you know that I had the opportunity to speak @altsummit in Palm Springs in March and althought it was my first time attending this women's conference, it won't be my last. From the relaxed vibe to the excitement of being a part of an incredible community of women who understand what it's like to be a creative entrepreneur. I met so many amazing people, including @danielleamelton, Founder @joinmotherboard, a true powerhouse, who is also from Tulsa. We didn't know each other prior to attending the event and joked that we had to meet in California to connect in Oklahoma. I have had several people ask about my experience and if attending was “worth it” – the answer is a resounding yes – it's worth it on so many levels, most importantly, your time and money is an investment in yourself and your professional journey. I invited Danielle for a conversation to share more about our experiences at ALT Summit and learn her thoughts on the overall caliber of women who attend and the topics that are shared and discussed. We recorded an Instagram live and I'm now sharing the audio version. Danielle is incredible and I'm excited to share our visit with you! If you've ever wondered why there are so many annoying people on Twitter, you've got Tumblr to thank for that. Tumblr, the microblogging site that reigned supreme in the 2010s, was like Facebook's cool cousin who has blue hair and goes to art school. It was the cradle of identity formation for lonely teens and adults, and it was also a happy home to lots and lots of porn. Tumblr's NSFW content made it a search-engine-friendly way to consume porn without your mom finding out. But its alternative edge made it an easy victim to much more powerful companies - which is why, in this episode, Hannah and Maia discuss the Tumblr porn ban and its consequences on society. Tangents including but not limited to: the “free nipples for sale” movement, Hannah's Addison Rae addiction, and Maia's misanthropic middle school blog: “Who the Poo Cares”.  Hannah's Tumblr: https://acidrain-e.tumblr.com/ Maia's Tumblr: https://takemybadge.tumblr.com/ Support us on Patreon and get juicy bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/rehashpodcast Intro and outro song by our talented friend Ian Mills: https://linktr.ee/ianmillsmusic Leah Collins, “How Tumblr went from a $1 billion Yahoo payday to a $3 million fire sale.” CNBC (2022). https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/15/how-tumblr-went-from-1-billion-yahoo-payday-to-3-million-fire-sale.html Josh Holiday “David Karp, founder of Tumblr, on realizing his dream” The Guardian (2012). https://www.theguardian.com/media/2012/jan/29/tumblr-david-karp-interview Michael J. de la Merced, Nick Bilton and Nicole Perlroth “Yahoo to Buy Tumblr for $1.1 Billion.” The New York Times (2013) .https://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/20/technology/yahoo-to-buy-tumblr-for-1-1-billion.html Allison McCrcken, Alexander Cho, Louisa Stein, Indira Neill Hoch “You Must Be New Here: An Introduction” a tumblr book: platform and culture, Chapter 1, (2020). There's no denying the grief that permeates everyday life. It's in the news, in our communities, and in our personal lives. The thing is - we never really talk about how much this grief connects us.  This episode is STUNNING. It has gifts for everyone - whether you're grieving a personal loss or you're an activist of any kind. It was recorded in the summer of 2023, so you will not hear us mention P*lestine - you can bet if we'd recorded it now, that grief, and that need for belonging, would be present. If you ARE an activist or organizer, you need to hear what Malkia has to say about our narrative strategies, and what it really takes to make change happen. If we learn to lean into that grief together, we might really create the beautiful world we all long for. Malkia Devich-Cyril knows grief from the inside out. They grew up knowing their mom would die of her illness. They grew up immersed in the grief that is endemic to being Black in America. And they cared for their wife, comedian Alana Devich-Cyril, through her death in 2018.   In this episode we cover:    The difference between sorrow and grief How “feelings aren't facts” relates to grief Is it normal to feel like you failed to keep someone alive?  Why do narrative strategists (aka: activists) need to understand grief?  Are book bans a form of grief? Why is it that whenever someone “thinks of the children”, a sex worker is harmed in the process? In this episode, Hannah and Maia tell the story of Backpage - the classifieds website that came crashing down when instances of child sex trafficking was discovered in its seedy underbelly. But while the crusade against the site and its free-wheeling founders seemed well intentioned, the act that was used to take them down (FOSTA-SESTA) has had massive consequences for the freedom of the web, and most importantly, for sex workers. You can never be too altruistic if John McCain is in your corner. If you find your mind darting from one thing to the next and struggling to concentrate for even short periods of time, there are two things to know. First, you're not alone and, second, it's probably related to technology.  In an article published at Motherboard, Kaleigh Rogers described her experiment banning all screens from her home for a month: no TV, no tablet, no smart phones, no computers.  The results were dramatic, and unlike with exercise or dieting, immediate. She experienced better concentration, found more time in her day, felt closer in her relationships, and gained a renewed sense of creativity. A Facebook commenter who conducted the same experiment described an almost “superhuman” focus and productivity.  Screens have profoundly shaped our lives, especially our minds and relationships. We need not be Luddites, but we can create boundaries and stick to them. Rather than allowing notifications, games, and texts to control our schedules and attention, we can control them, making time for relationships, concentration, and creativity. That doesn't sound so superhuman...   For the Colson Center, I'm John Stonestreet.   This Point was originally published on February 14, 2017.

What happens when a for profit company is run by a non-profit board of directors who are ideologically opposed to the company's product? You get something like what happened to OpenAI over the past week, which saw its board of directors sack CEO Sam Altman before eventually reinstating him and resigning. It's a weird story that involves AI, predictions of the end of the world, strange pagan rites in Silicon Valley offices, and a Harry Potter fanfic.Join us this week on Cyber as Motherboard senior editor Maxwell Strachan walks us through what the hell just happened and what it means for the future of AI.Stories discussed in this episode:Sam Altman Out at OpenAI ‘Effective Immediately'Everything You Need to Know About the Ridiculously Chaotic 'Coup,' Implosion, and Counter-Revolution at OpenAIBinance CEO Changpeng Zhao, Who Crafted a Responsible Image, Is Pleading Guilty to Breaking Anti-Money Laundering LawsWall Street Embraces AI Despite Risks of Catastrophe Hosted on Acast. Rhino sounds like a good deal at first. When people move into a new apartment, they often have to pay a large lump sum security deposit to their landlord. For people who can't pay, Rhino offers to bill them a little bit every month in lieu of the deposit. But there's a catch: unlike security deposits, money sent to Rhino is never returned. The company uses algorithms to make the wealthy pay less than poorer people, some renters are still paying for places where they no longer live and no one, including landlords, can get the service on the phone. This week on Cyber, Motherboard writer Roshan Abraham comes on to discuss his investigation into Rhino. Last Monday, Reddit moderators from nearly 9,000 subreddits shut down their forums in what might be the largest moderator-coordinated social media protest in internet history. They're battling against Reddit CEO Steve Huffman's decision to start charging for access to the platform's software framework, or API, in an attempt to spin a profit, woo investors, and eventually IPO in the second half of 2023. Although the blackout began to die down within 48 hours of its inception, over 3,000 subreddits, such as those with over 30 million followers each like r/funny, r/gaming, and r/music are still dark to this day. On this week's podcast extra, OTM correspondent Micah Loewinger speaks with Jason Koebler, the editor-in-chief at Motherboard, Vice's tech section, to discuss the intricacies of the protest and why he dubbed it "a battle for the soul of the human internet.”
