POPULARITY
In 1984 a trusted production executive desperately tried to convince Clint Eastwood to pass on “The Cut-Whore Killing,” stressing that the screenplay was not worth his time. Eastwood placed it in a drawer, but not because of the material; only during the latter phase of his career did he feel he could earn the right to properly deconstruct the western genre. Released in 1992, “Unforgiven” would go on to win Oscars for Best Picture, Director (Eastwood), Editing, and Supporting Actor for the late Gene Hackman. Jason Thompson and Dennis roll into Big Whiskey, open a bottle and celebrate Eastwood's masterpiece. Deserve's got nothing to do with it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where this week we're saddling up and riding into the gritty world of Clint Eastwood's 1992 revisionist Western, Unforgiven.Unforgiven is not your typical Western shoot-'em-up. It's a film that questions the myths of the Old West, presenting a tale steeped in moral complexity and the harsh truths of frontier justice. Eastwood directs and stars as William Munny, a notorious outlaw and killer who's left his violent past behind for a quiet life with his children on a farm. But when the promise of a bounty lures him back for one last job, we're taken on a journey that explores themes of redemption, the weight of legacy, and the inescapable nature of one's past. With an outstanding supporting cast, including Morgan Freeman as Ned Logan, Gene Hackman as the brutal Sheriff Little Bill, and Richard Harris as English Bob, the performances are as sharp as the dialogue. The film delves into the psyche of its characters, painting a picture of men who are far removed from the gallant heroes of old Western lore.Unforgiven earned critical acclaim upon its release, securing four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood. It's a film that dismantled the glamorized image of gunslingers and showed the audience the gritty reality of life in the American West.So Dads, let's talk about the impact of this film, its place in Eastwood's legendary career, and how it redefined the Western genre for modern audiences. And maybe we'll share a few stories about our own unforgiven dad moments along the way.Pull up a stool, pour yourself a whiskey, and let's get ready to revisit the town of Big Whiskey, Wyoming. It's going to be a bumpy, introspective ride on this episode of Bad Dads Film Review.

On episode 18 of Past Prime, Steve and Matty confront their demons which, as it turns out, do not look like Jam Bands. Nor do they resemble hacky sackers or fratty teens drinking Zimas and smoking joints in the parking lot. No, Matty and Steve come face to face with the most insidious of fiends -- their own biases. The problem apparently was not with Dave. The problem was with our co-hosts and their pretensions. So, after decades rolling their eyes, making snarky asides and generally avoiding the subject, they immerse themselves in "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King," the seventh studio album from the Dave Matthews Band, released in 2009. Following the death of saxophonist LeRoi Moore, DMB made a sprawling, celebratory album for their legions of fraternity and sorority alums. In middle age, Dave, Carter and the band were among the biggest rock bands in the world and in full control of the "GrooGrux" -- a nickname for their musical "flow" or "juju." As with their previous albums, there are a couple tender ballads, some B- middle school poetry, and the unlikely combination of lite, worldly Jazz and athletic Funk. There are still songs with numbers for titles, lots of sex talk and several of references to monkeys doing things. But, in the end, Matty and Steve have to admit the thing they tens of millions of fans already knew: Dave Matthews Band aren't so bad. In fact, they're pretty impressive. Spoiler alert: Matty even loved one of the songs on this one. Not liked. Loved. To read more about Dave Matthews Band's "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King," check out the full essay at Past Prime.
Mac McCormack probably owns more whisky than anyone you know. The owner of three Richmond-area restaurants that bear his name, the McCormack's locations boast impressively-stocked bars with a wide array of whisky. "I would guess in the 15 to 18,000 bottle [range] right now," McCormack answered when asked about his selection across McCormack's Big Whisky Grill at Regency Square, McCormack's Whisky Grill in the Fan, and McCormack's Irish Pub in Shockoe Bottom. "I don't know that anybody has more of a selection than we do at Big Whiskey. I don't see how they could, because it took me 10 years to put this collection together. Virginia has some restrictions where we have to buy everything from the ABC. And so one of the reasons we have so many bottles and backstock is because of that. So when things become available, I buy as many as I can, just to make sure that we keep them in stock, because I have to not think about today or tomorrow, I have to think about five years from now. And some of the products that we carry, the only reason we have them is that I stocked them 15 years ago having no idea that they will become so popular." When you sit down at one of McCormack's bars, don't be surprised if he steers you away from his most expensive bourbon pours. "My job as a bartender here is to show people the ones that they don't have to pay that money for. If people are doing that, and it's not the corporate guys in suits and it's not their money, I say, well, why don't we take a third of that shot price and I'll show you four whiskies that cost a third of that, that I think are almost as good or equally as good. And you don't have to waste a bunch of money," he said. "I understand the value of the bottles that I have, but I actually down-sell people all the time from those kinds of crazy expensive pours. We're a restaurant and I want you to come here once every two weeks, once every three weeks for dinner, I don't want you to just think of us as the expensive place." McCormack recently reopened his new Big Whisky Grill at Regency Square in Henrico's West End. There are but few others who have come to represent the Western genre as fully as Clint Eastwood. From Sergio Leone to Josey Wales, the laconically scowling scoundrel permeates our culture as the signature symbol of the frontier. Wielding this iconic clout, Eastwood chose to make his final stamp on the genre with the ultimate de-mystifying of its hero-worshipping ways, rendering a bleak, uncompromising portrait of the brutality of the West, and the bogus myth-making that went into romanticizing its supposed heroes. As the grizzled star of the picture, Eastwood lends credibility to the washed-up murderer of women and children that is William Munny, a scourge of the frontier wrangled back into the fold out of destitution and desperation. As he travels to the town of Big Whiskey, in a falsely noble quest to avenge the mutilation of a local call girl, we see how truly morbid and bleak the West actually was, and the inhumane ideals necessary to actually perform the murderous heroics romanticized in the legends of such stories passed down over the years. Unforgiven is the last reminder we need to know that the apocryphal West of our imaginations was merely that, and the mythos we've carved from its stories are but the misguided dreams of virulent men. Especially in the line ‘Till I was slave and master at the same damn time.’. Listen to the song on Spotify here: Why I Am - Dave Matthews Band Listen Anywhere! Tonight, we are three men on a mission of revenge. One who can’t stay on a horse, one with an unsteady hand, and one who can’t see worth a damn. Somehow, we’ll find our mark in 1992’s Unforgiven. Expect to see Clint Eastwood falling off a horse, whores with hearts of gold, a poorly built house, and death on a shitter. This film takes typical western tropes and beats them senseless, like a gun toting stranger, stepping into Big Whiskey! Law is crooked around here, just like Little Bill’s freshly built porch, be on your guard, people round here shoot first, and grieve never. Tonight, on the Marquee: Sticking to Your Jameses Gunnzez Trial and Error vs. Crime and Punishment, Castle Rock, and the Christopher Robin I Forgot the Movie! Mark is still Unforgiven Clint Eastwood is Old! Water is Wet! How Old is His Mom? Whore? Sex Worker? Greek Chorus? Despite throwing his back out the night before and having a bad cold, Dave Matthews made sure to keep our appointment to chat about his incredible new album "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King". He's amazingly candid about everything he discusses...from the tragic death of a LaRoi Moore to the horrific situation years ago in Chicago when one of his bus drivers dumped 800 pounds of human waste on the heads of those on a boat in the Chicago River. For the record, I felt bad about bringing up the "poop" incident since it's old news and I am well aware how bad he feels about it. But he was more than willing to discuss it, take responsibility, and apologize yet again.
"Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King" is The Dave Matthews Band's upbeat, charging tribute to one of their founding members, sax player Leroi Moore who died while the album was being recorded.
