She presents simple techniques of receptivity, some from her Buddhist mindfulness practice, along with forest-bathing protocols, showing how forest bathing can calm, soothe, and heal our bodies, minds, and spirits. She also recounts her own remarkable healing after twenty years suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.Revealing how ancient trees can help expand our consciousness, the author shares her awakenings within an ancient redwood forest, including prescient dreams and telepathic tree communication. She also explores deities, elementals, and spirits connected to forests and trees, including dryads, the Norse goddess Freyja, and Elen of the Ways, one of the earliest goddesses in Britain. This book shows how, when humans listen deeply to nature and allow the living biosphere to be our guide, restoration of ourselves and our world is possible.Ellen Dee Davidson has worked as a creative writing, piano, and elementary school teacher and is the author of a number of children's books, including Wind, which won the Nautilus Gold Award, and The Miracle Forest. She is a member of TreeSisters, Awakening Women, and the Earth Treasure Vase Global Healing Project. Send us a textNature deficit syndrome is silently affecting millions as we spend over 95% of our lives indoors beneath artificial lighting that disrupts our biology at the most fundamental level. Dr. Mark Pettus delivers a compelling exploration of this modern disconnection, introducing the powerful concept that our current "junk light" epidemic may soon be viewed with the same concern we now direct toward processed foods.Drawing from both scientific research and ancient wisdom traditions, Dr. Pettus reveals how the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) offers a profound antidote to our indoor, technology-dominated existence. The evidence is remarkable – even brief nature immersion triggers measurable shifts from sympathetic nervous system dominance (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic activation (rest and digest), resulting in lower blood pressure, improved heart rate variability, reduced inflammation, and enhanced immune function through natural killer cell activation. At the heart of this discussion lies a philosophical revelation about human existence itself. The "illusion of separateness" that characterizes modern living contradicts our true biological nature as integral parts of a larger ecosystem. When we reconnect with natural environments – feeling the sunlight, breathing forest air rich with beneficial compounds, and simply being present – we synchronize with rhythms and frequencies our bodies inherently recognize. This reconnection doesn't require abandoning modern life but rather intentionally incorporating nature exposure alongside other ancestral practices to create states of clarity, focus, and happiness that aren't random gifts of fortune but natural conditions we can cultivate. In this episode of The Backyard Naturalists, Debbie and Laurie welcome Melanie Choukas-Bradley, a certified nature and forest therapy guide, author, and naturalist, to explore the art and science of forest bathing. Originating in Japan as "shinrin-yoku," forest bathing is the practice of immersing oneself in nature to reap significant physical and mental health benefits.   Melanie explains how this practice, introduced in the 1980s, has been proven to lower blood pressure, boost immunity, improve sleep, and reduce stress. She shares how Washington, D.C.—with its abundant parks and tree canopy—offers an ideal setting for connecting with nature and highlights initiatives to expand green spaces in underserved areas.   Listeners will learn what a forest bathing walk entails, from disconnecting from devices to engaging all five senses with the natural world. Melanie emphasizes that forest bathing is accessible to everyone, whether solo or in groups, and can even be practiced in local parks or backyards.   The episode wraps up with book recommendations for nature enthusiasts and practical advice on incorporating forest bathing techniques into daily life. Episode Summary: In this episode of DriveTime Debrief, we explore the powerful practice of forest bathing, its scientifically-backed benefits, and how physicians can incorporate it into their busy lives. Originating in Japan in the 1980s, forest bathing, or Shinrin-Yoku, is a nature-immersion technique that has proven benefits for mental health, immune function, and cardiovascular well-being. Discover how spending even 10–15 minutes in nature can help reduce stress, boost immunity, and improve mindfulness. We share actionable tips to make forest bathing part of your routine and discuss how to introduce it to patients as a complementary wellness tool. What You'll Learn in This Episode: What Is Forest Bathing? Origin: Japanese preventative healthcare practice from the 1980s. Definition: Mindful immersion in nature to engage all the senses. Why It's Relevant for Physicians: High burnout rates in healthcare. Nature-based therapies as a tool for stress management and mental health support. The Science Behind Forest Bathing: Stress Reduction: 2010 study: Forest bathing lowers cortisol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate. Phytoncides from trees enhance relaxation. Immune Function: Dr. Ching Lee's research: Forest immersion boosts natural killer cells and immune health. Mental Health: 2019 meta-analysis: Reduces anxiety, depression, and fatigue by fostering mindfulness. Cardiovascular Health: 2011 study: Improves heart rate variability and parasympathetic tone. Practical Applications for Physicians: Micro-Doses of Nature: Visit parks or gardens for 10–15 minutes during breaks or after work. Weekend Retreats: Dedicate time for hiking, camping, or nature immersion. Mindful Nature Walks: Engage senses—listen to leaves, smell evergreens, touch tree bark. Techniques for Forest Bathing: Leave technology behind. Walk slowly with no set destination. Pause to sit, observe, and reflect. Introducing Forest Bathing to Patients: Encourage outdoor time for stress relief. Provide resources like local parks or trails. Share evidence-based benefits to improve adherence. Addressing Barriers: Lack of green spaces: Opt for urban parks, indoor plants, or natural soundscapes. Limited time: Start with brief 5–10 minute sessions. Weekly Homework Challenge: Take 10–15 minutes this week to immerse yourself in nature. Notice how you feel before and after. If you're unable to get outside, try listening to a natural soundscape or adding greenery indoors. We'd love to hear about your experience! Email us at podcast@thewholephysician.com. Democrats are hoping to get climate policy passed by flipping at least three seats in the Pennsylvania State Senate. But a race in Pittsburgh's suburbs is leaving the environment out. More rain as a result of climate change is causing landslides and testing planning decisions made decades ago. Money from the Inflation Reduction Act is starting to flow into Pennsylvania, but future funding could be threatened by a second Trump administration. Also, Pennsylvania will receive about $245 million this year to clean up abandoned mine lands. With the presidential election just days away, environmental justice advocates see high stakes for their communities. How the practice of forest bathing can relieve stress and put us in touch with nature.

What is forest bathing?  How does forest bathing impact mental health? How does it impact physical health?  Nature is medicine. Forest = For Rest There have been many studies to show that forest bathing and simply being in nature is a way to decrease stress and improve well-being. It improves mental and physical health conditions. It impacts both our vital signs and our outlook. Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmille, MD, FACOG, ABoIM is board-certified in integrative medicine and ObGyn. She has additional certifications in herbal medicine, Ayurveda, and meditation. She is also certified as a Forest Bathing Therapist through The Association of Nature and Forest Bathing and she is the author of The Outdoor Adventurer's Guide to Forest Bathing.   In this episode, Doc Suzy shares her compelling and emotional story.  She discovered integrative medicine and forest bathing. when she began seeking answers to burnout as an ObGYN on top of navigating having an autistic child and a husband diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. Forest bathing, just like mindfulness, is primarily about noticing. It is also a practice of using all your senses. Listen to the episode to learn how to forest bathe. Suzy recommends a pyramid approach to forest bathing.  This means, if possible, we should celebrate the awe and wonder of what we notice in nature amidst significant natural wonders (such as national parks) regularly. A plug to join us in Muir Woods, at Muir Beach, and in the gardens of the Green Gulch Farm and Zen Center for Connect in Nature. Our location is a site of much awe-inspiring nature. This is the last year we will host Connect in Nature in this location. Next year we will be moving this event to a TBD different spectacular spot in nature.  Dr. Bartlett Hackenmille explains that we can also practice forest bathing weekly in urban local parks, botanical gardens, arboretums, and/or daily in our backyard. We can even practice nature therapy/nature medicine with a potted plant and/or on a construction site.  We highly recommend Suzy's gorgeous book which is full of color pictures and a myriad of invitations to practice forest bathing.  How might you like to practice more “nature medicine”?  Where could you forest bathe today? This week? This year? Why not forest bathe with us in Muir Woods at Connect in Nature Sept 6-8th. ? If those dates don't work for you, consider signing up to forest bathe with Jessie at a Nicasio Creek Farm Wellness Retreat in October or, November 2024 or at Sagrada Wellness in November 2024, There are also many date options for Pause & Presence nature-based retreats in 2025. Today's Mindful Moment offering is a forest bathing meditation guided by Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller. For podcast listeners, please find a photo of your ideal forest space for this practice or listen outside. You can find Dr Suzanne at @docsuzy on IG or at her website www.integrativeinitiative.com. Move beyond consuming this amazing podcast. True change happens when you work with us - virtually and/or in-person.
