Commonplace: Conversations with Poets (and Other People)

The second of five episodes featuring the lectures that became Rachel Zucker's newest book, The Poetics of Wrongness. This episode contains audio of “What We Talk About When We Talk About the Confessional and What We Should Be Talking About,” presented at the University of Arizona Poetry Center (Tucson) on January 28, 2016. It also includes a new introduction by Rachel and a conversation recorded in April, 2023 with the founder and host of the Keep the Channel Open podcast, Mike Sakasegawa. In this lecture, Rachel Zucker discusses the origin of the term Confessional as it came to be used for a specific group of poets, the legacy of confessional poetry, risk, shame, and questions of gender and privilege in relationship to confessional poetry. Many thanks to The University of Arizona Poetry Center, The Bagley Wright Poetry Lecture Series and the BWLS Podcast, Ellen Welcker, Heidi Broadhead, Charlie Wright and everyone at Wave Books. Here is a longer list of acknowledgments and a partial list of referenced sources for Rachel's lectures.

When you're podcasting, you're always learning. There's always something new to try or new conversations to be had. This learning is a journey of practice and how we don't have to take things so seriously, especially in podcasting when it's meant to be fun. This fun practice means we get to record many episodes, sometimes week in and week out. When you do something long enough, something is bound to go wrong! And even if something does go wrong, it's OK, it's part of the learning process and podcasting in general. We are all on a podcasting journey together. Get ready to go from your inner critic and transform that into your inner leader. I'm so happy to share with you my conversation with Amber Campion. Amber is a trauma-informed yoga teacher, breathwork facilitator, & mindfulness-based life + leadership coach. For more than a decade, Amber's work in the field of emotional intelligence, personal leadership, and self-discovery has led her to create embodied trainings, workshops, retreats, masterminds, and online courses supporting wisdom seekers to bring their Full Self to the world. We talk about: Breathwork and how it impacts our creative work as Podcasters. Beating self-doubt when "we don't know what we don't know" where she provides tools of grounding to deal with self-doubt in podcasting. Tips on what you need to do before hitting that record button. Finally, we include a beautiful breathing exercise I think we should all do before we ever get behind our mics [28:37]. We also talk about the seven mind traps briefly in this episode, but if you'd like to go deeper on all seven mind traps that include yoga, breathwork and insight journaling, you can access Amber's 5-day embodiment experience called "Keep the Channel Open". Do you ever have a moment where you hear a story from a friend that you've never heard before and you are in awe? I got the feeling multiple times in our live broadcast with Atticus Mooney. Mind. Is. Blown. Atticus is a movement enthusiast, DJ and embodiment coach. She shared that our bodies have inbuilt systems by which to guide us, that in today's world, we pretty much ignore.  Movement can allow us to keep our ‘channel open'. We can process emotions and make better decisions about life and work just by moving our bodies. And you don't need to be a dancer to do this. From sharing her incredible life decision that involved the pentagon, to how she views and is actively creating an unrestricted life, to how she uses organization to feel unrestricted, we heard a lot of incredible insights from Atticus. And lots of laughs too. You may feel inspired to get up and move again, which in this current time, is needed more than ever.  Find Atticus Mooney on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/atticus_moon/ABOUT UNRESTRICTED Live & ATHENA SIMPSON UNRESTRICTED Live is a show where we hear from incredible women who live life on their own terms, who take care of their mind, body & soul, while building successful businesses and projects that they love. I'm your host Athena Simpson.
