Sometimes, you are so consumed by caring for a loved one with a serious mental illness, like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, that taking a moment for yourself feels like a betrayal. In this episode, host Gabe Howard and Dr. C. Alec Pollard reveal the hidden crisis of caregiver burnout in the world of serious mental illness. They dismantle the myth that self-care is selfish, showing how neglecting your own needs can worsen stress and strain the very relationships you cherish. Dr. Pollard dives into the toxic beliefs that trap caregivers—those who support individuals with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other severe conditions—into a cycle of resentment and exhaustion. With breakthrough strategies and compassionate advice, this episode offers a wake-up call for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the relentless demands of caregiving. Learn how nurturing yourself not only protects your well-being but also empowers you to care more effectively for your loved one. “If you can do no good, at least do no harm. A lot of the, the things that families don't understand and caregivers is that they're actually doing things that not only they know it doesn't work okay. When they're doing these things, these naggings and lectures and all that, they know it's not working. But what they may not appreciate is it's actually making things worse over time.” ~C. Alec Pollard, PhD Our guest, C. Alec Pollard, Ph.D., is Founding Director of the Center for OCD and Anxiety-Related Disorders at Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute and Professor Emeritus of Family and Community Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He is a licensed psychologist who works with a range of obsessive-compulsive and anxiety-related disorders, with a special interest in obstacles that might inhibit the pursuit of recovery or interfere with effective participation in treatment. He is on the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board of the International OCD Foundation and chairs the organization's Training Subcommittee, including a national training initiative called the Behavior Therapy Training Institute. Dr. Pollard is former chair of the Clinical Advisory Board of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America and has authored over 100 publications, including 3 books – “The Agoraphobia Workbook, Dying of Embarrassment: Help for Social Anxiety & Phobia,” and “When a Loved One Won't Seek Mental Health Treatment: How to Promote Recovery and Reclaim Your Family's Well-Being.” Inside Mental Health's host, Gabe Howard. lives with bipolar disorder and is a nationally recognized speaker and podcast host. Why do some fears disappear whilst others seem to stay with us for years? Why can one bad experience shape the way we think, feel and behave long after the danger has passed? And why do humans keep expecting the worst, even when things are actually okay?In this episode of Psychology, Actually, I'm joined by Dr Martyn Quigley, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Swansea University, to explore the fascinating psychology of extinction learning, phobias, anxiety, exposure therapy, conditioning and habit change. We discuss why fear responses develop, why they can be so difficult to shift, and how our brains learn safety through experience. Along the way we also explore the surprising psychology behind ghosting, positive reinforcement, expectancy violations and why noticing when things go right might be one of the most powerful psychological tools we have.Whether you're interested in anxiety, phobias, psychology, mental health, behaviour change, exposure therapy or simply understanding why humans think and act the way they do, this episode is packed with practical insights.Highlights00:00 Why fears can last for years00:57 Meet Dr Martyn Quigley01:53 What is extinction learning?02:55 The psychology of ghosting05:29 Breaking habits through extinction learning07:10 Parenting, behaviour and reinforcement07:50 Habituation explained11:18 Why some sounds drive us mad12:01 Extinction learning vs errorless learning14:33 Positive reinforcement at home18:12 Why we notice complaints more than praise21:53 From ghosting to phobias22:53 What actually is a phobia?24:52 The Little Albert experiment25:56 How extinction learning helps treat phobias27:01 Why fear can come back29:01 Dogs, anxiety and context-dependent learning30:58 Exposure therapy and systematic desensitisation35:19 Virtual reality treatments for phobias37:43 Shark phobias and everyday anxiety39:54 Expectancy violations and anxiety41:46 Learning to notice when things go right44:12 Future psychology topics and closing reflections Interested in working in research? He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics — an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology. Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world's greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle's 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology. Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. This week, Tommy is joined by Jacob Anderson, star of Interview with the Vampire, for a thoughtful conversation about inhabiting one of television’s most complex characters. Jacob opens up about his connection to Louis de Pointe du Lac, the ways he differs from the character, and the emotional challenges of bringing Louis’ story to life. He reflects on filming the series while spending long stretches away from home, the trust he’s built with co-star Sam Reid, and how moments of humor behind the scenes help balance the show’s intense themes. He also shares the practices that keep him grounded during production, discusses some of his favorite scenes from the series, and reveals why the relationship between the cast has been so essential to the show's success. Beyond acting, Jacob talks about his love of storytelling, his fascination with behind-the-scenes filmmaking, and how his music career continues to influence his creative process. Plus, he teases new music on the horizon, reflects on parenthood and how kids keep him humble, and closes the episode with some surprising fears! And catch the bonus episode with Jacob, dropping Thursday! A fun, mini rapid fire round that you won't want to miss!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Season 11 may be on hiatus, but Pete and Tommy have the audacity to show up anyway — because something happened at Denver International Airport that absolutely cannot wait until fall. Tommy arrived in New York City with everything he needed for a great trip, and then he didn't. The story involves a maintenance worker with a unique communication style, a rubber glove, and a level of IP water resistance certification that turns out to be more relevant to everyday life than one might expect. It's a tale of panic, improvisation, and the humiliation of writing someone's address on the back of a band-aid.Pete, meanwhile, has been quietly assembling a life on the outside of his house while the inside remains a work in progress. There are composite deck planks. There is outdoor furniture. There is a sectional. And somewhere out there, a cabinet renderer is looking at a completely different kitchen. Plus: Pete's been writing at a pace that suggests either something has clicked or something has broken, and either way, there are books coming. Before they let you go, Pete and Tommy have locked in the agenda for at least one of the remaining hiatus check-ins — starting with a blind tasting event that will require both significant financial investment and a willingness to find out what Pikachu tastes like. Everything is fine. Everything is coming up Feeling Friends.Of course, if you're listening to this episode in this public feed, you won't hear most of that. A couple summers ago, Radiolab reporter Alex Neason got out of the shower and almost stepped on her worst nightmare: an American Cockroach. It was flipped onto its back, struggling, and for a split second, Alex swears she felt the spiny tickle of its legs on the underside of her bare foot. And, like every other time she has come into contact with a roach, this sent her into a debilitating spiral of fear, anger, and disgust. This week, Alex tries to understand what might be behind her fear, in the hopes she can overcome it. And in doing so, Alex learns more about these so-called pests than she could have ever wanted to.Special thanks to Jessica Ware, Timothy Marzullo, Alexandra Bell, and Changlu WangEPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - Alex Neason Produced by - Jessica Yung and Annie McEwen with mixing help from - Jeremy Bloom Fact-checking by - Sophie Samiee and Edited by - Pat Walters EPISODE CITATIONS: Articles - American Cockroaches, Racism, and the Ecology of the Slave Ship (https://zpr.io/UNKsMz7ZaLvb) by Lindsay Garcia, Arcadia Books - Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains (https://zpr.io/6E5wJBM4Kvcv) by Bethany Brookshire The Cockroach Papers (https://zpr.io/CvKePYxEMEAW) by Richard Schweid Cockroach (https://zpr.io/UuEAjmfqKccQ) by Marion Copeland Sign up for our newsletter!! Season 11 closes with what Pete and Tommy insist is a whimper, which is how you know it is absolutely not a whimper. They handed each other their worst possible topics — trash and recycling for Tommy, seasonal stuff for Pete — and accidentally made an episode about deception, ancient biology, and a rhinoceros named Cacareco who won a 1959 São Paulo city council seat in a landslide.Tommy did, in his own words, "too much research" on recycling, which he now says as a warning. The chasing-arrows symbol is not what you think it is, the plastics industry has known since the eighties that none of this was going to work, and your Starbucks cup is currently booking a one-way flight to Senegal. Pete's seasonal-stuff segment begins with mums — the flower, not your mother — and lands somewhere near the claim that 84 genes in your body are in active dispute with late-stage capitalism about what time of year it is.Thanks for listening to Season 11. We'll be back. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Visit allthefeelings.fum/join to learn more!
When a population of people is homogenous and orderly, anyone stepping out of line is quickly shamed and encouraged to rejoin the group. When that parson is foreign or of a certain race or ethnicity it often becomes a racial issue rather than one of social order. Public shaming and discrimination of one's own is accepted but when it involves outsiders it is considered a moral sin. Stereotyping and prejudice is often, like a phobia, justified based on experience and collective actions, meaning that racism is often justified and rational. But how do Western views on racism apply when a “white” person advocating to “stop asian hate” is confronted by an asian ruthlessly trolling a brown person? The bottom line is that dislike for a person or group of people, although maybe immoral, is not and should not be illegal, particular in a society attempting to construct a hierarchy of what is acceptable discrimination. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Tommy opens with a conversation that didn't start as a therapy pitch — and became exactly that. Someone in his life has been white-knuckling a worsening anxiety spiral, armed with nothing but the very adult conviction that they should probably just handle it. Sound familiar? Tommy walks through what he told them: the case for therapy, the case for medication, and the analogy that reframes everything about why you take something "to feel better." He also surfaces the most important and least-discussed reason people avoid getting help — and it has nothing to do with stigma.Pete, meanwhile, has a confession. He is possibly inappropriately enthusiastic about surgery. Not in a Cronenberg way. In the way of a man who went to sleep with a gallbladder and woke up without one and has been genuinely awed about it ever since. This episode is his love letter to the laparoscopic revolution — six hundred thousand procedures a year, four tiny holes, and the medical equivalent of a hey-while-you're-in-there moment that changed the entire field within five years. He also has some thoughts on telesurgery, ultrasound beams that dissolve kidney stones without touching you, and what it says about adult trust that we will hand ourselves to strangers with robot arms and simply say: do your worst.Together, these segments make an argument the show has been circling all season: that adulthood is mostly accepting help you didn't know you needed, from systems you don't entirely understand, built by people who failed spectacularly for centuries before they got it right. Whether you're staring down a panic attack or a surgical consent form, the move is the same — stop trying to fix it with dirt, and let someone who practiced on a cadaver take a look.Pete also has feelings about pig kidneys. Big feelings. Feeling Friends feelings. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Visit allthefeelings.fum/join to learn more!

If you have ever stood in a store paralyzed over whether the candle is enough, whether the wine communicates something terrible about how little you care, whether showing up without something is worse than showing up with the wrong thing: there is a name for that. Tommy found it. Dr. Melissa Colt calls it trauma-based giving, which is the clinical way of saying you are not choosing a gift so much as you are paying a ransom.Pete's dentist, when Pete was a kid, gave him more metal fillings than any child with freshly grown adult teeth could possibly need. Every visit, something new to fill. It was, as Pete now recognizes, a textbook case of dental overtreatment. He responded the way anyone would: he avoided dentists entirely for the next seventeen years. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Pete was a true believer. ICQ. AIM. Friendster. MySpace. A Twitter ID below four thousand. He didn't just use the early social web — he helped build it, one weird forum and one enthusiastic post at a time. And then, somewhere between the algorithmic timeline and the fourteenth terms-of-service update, something got taken. Cory Doctorow has a word for what happened. Pete has feelings about it. This is that conversation. The thing about pet influencers is that they shouldn't work. The $24 billion pet influencer industry — a phrase that should not exist — is built entirely on content created by creatures who cannot consent, cannot read the comments, and are legally classified as property in most jurisdictions. And yet. Science has thoughts on why this is, and Pete has thoughts on what it says about everything we built on the internet and watched get taken apart. The dog, it turns out, never updated the terms of service.Tommy is here to make the affirmative case: pets are genuinely, measurably, peer-reviewedly good for you. He also has an origin story for his dog Foster that involves July 4th, a rescue organization, three rules he broke immediately, and what the scientific community refers to as a "foster failure." Pete's dog Gambit has a headcanon that is both extremely funny and, per Pete, incredibly derogatory. Both dogs are excellent. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Here is something that should make you briefly furious: the reason so many adults stop trying new things — stop picking up instruments and languages and crafts, stop putting themselves in positions of gorgeous, humbling incompetence — is not laziness, and it is not age. It is a scientific consensus that was overturned decades ago and somehow never sent you notice.Pete brings some brain stuff. Tommy brings some hobbies. And together they make a case that two of the most underrated things an adult can do are: willingly be terrible at something new, and stop apologizing for what you do in your free time.Pete's side will change the way you talk to yourself about your own brain. Tommy's side will make you want to immediately go do something completely unnecessary and slightly obsessive. This week on Come Curious, Florence and Reed are coming to you from opposite sides of the world — one in Thailand, one in California — juggling time zones, baby prep, and a whole lot of life. It's a proper catch-up episode filled with everything from near-medical emergencies to unexpected romance, body changes, and facing fears head-on. Reed shares the scary reality of getting seriously ill while travelling and how it forced her to confront some long-standing health anxieties. What started as a terrifying experience turned into something unexpectedly empowering — and a reminder to always listen to your body. Meanwhile, Florence opens up about being in the final stretch of pregnancy — the highs, the discomforts, and the surprising sense of connection and “goddess energy” that comes with growing a human. She also shares how intimacy and relationships shift during this time, and what it really looks like behind the scenes. Of course, it wouldn't be Come Curious without a bit of chaos — from rekindled connections and new dating stories abroad to niche kinks popping up in unexpected places. This episode is a mix of funny, vulnerable, and deeply human moments — the kind that remind you life (and sex, and love) rarely goes to plan. At some point in your adult life — somewhere between your first real prescription and the moment you quietly acquired a weekly pill organizer — you became a person with opinions about pharmacies. Strong ones. Opinions forged in the specific purgatory of an insurance pre-authorization, a fax machine that exists for reasons no one can explain, and a pharmacist who is simultaneously the most important person in your life and the person you are least willing to actually speak to. Pete is currently living inside this system, and he has questions. This week, Pete digs into why so many people with chronic conditions don't take the medications they've been prescribed — and the answer involves your body actively deceiving you, the emotional weight of swallowing a pill that means admitting something is wrong, and a healthcare system that was never actually designed with you in mind. Tommy, meanwhile, takes the other side of the problem: what happens when medicine overcorrects, when the pills start piling up, and when someone finally asks whether you actually need all of them. He arrives at this topic via some formative pharmaceutical history that spans elementary school, a diagnosis at thirty that his dermatologist called "the nuclear option," and a period of his life during which he was, technically, an international drug smuggler. Two segments. One topic. A combined lifetime of pharmaceutical anxiety that might, finally, make you feel a little less alone about yours. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Nobody told you that your job title was quietly becoming your personality. Or that the moment you started thinking about leaving, you weren't just weighing pros and cons — you were grieving. This week, Pete and Tommy tackle the twin anxieties of work-life balance and quitting your job: two topics that sound like HR seminar titles but turn out to be about identity, mortality, and the specific pain of realizing you've been earning SMILES program letters instead of a raise.Tommy revisits his brief, glorious, and deeply instructive tenure at MOOVies — a cow-themed children's video store that pivoted to softcore pornography and never updated the signage — as a case study in what happens when you try to reclaim your life by taking a step sideways into something worse. Pete unpacks what psychologists James Marcia and Erik Erikson called "identity foreclosure": the unsettling discovery that leaving a job means evicting a self you didn't realize you'd moved in. And yes, there are five types of quitting. You already know which one you are.Plus: the Great Resignation by the numbers, a taxonomy of modern exits from the quiet fade to the loyalty trap, and the story of JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater — a man who grabbed two beers and became, briefly, America's most relatable employee. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: Timing the puppy training early and with a directed purpose, and handling the fear periods in dogs. Habituation, spontaneous recovery, sensitization, and learned irrelevance. When to reorient and when to address fears. Understanding your dog's phobias to learn how to solve the problem. Common fears and phobias seen in police and sport dogs. Key Takeaways: Too many people restrict social and experiential learning in puppies during the critical stages of development out of fear. As a decoy, as a handler, as anyone working with a young dog, you need to be attentive to what you're doing and always be surveying your environment to avoid unintended consequences. Avoid creating a problem that doesn't already exist. Take a systematic approach to expose your dog to everything they need to be exposed to. Generally, fear periods are short-lived. Take your dog into more familiar places, more natural spaces, where it's not going to encounter a lot of things that are going to be super unusual or might provoke a fearful response. "I have a phobia about creating phobias. I don't want to create a phobia in my dog, because the road is going to be super long to try and systematically desensitize to any type of stimuli that's been created as an avoidance response." — Jerry Bradshaw Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com Book Reference: The Decoy Book by William Garrido - amazon.com/Decoy-Book-Collaborations-Some-Industry/dp/B08T6YGWSD Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training by Stephen R. Have you ever tried to teach thought work to someone you love, only to have them completely reject it? In this Coaching Hotline episode, I answer a question from a mom who wants her teenage son to benefit from thought work but keeps running into pushback. I explain why 15 is not too young to understand emotional processing, but it is old enough to resist being coached without permission.I also answer a question from a listener who is struggling with a long standing fear of heights that shows up intensely on tall bridges and airplanes. If you have ever felt frustrated that you logically know something is safe but still experience panic, this will resonate. You will learn how to stop escalating anxiety by resisting it, how to work with your thoughts about panic, and how acceptance becomes the foundation for real change. As time moves quickly by and her children grow up, Dr. Naomi makes changes to the family room at home that reflect everyone's current needs, including her own. A daughter is stressed out by her mother's bad driving but doesn't know how to tell her aging parent it might be time to ditch the car and start calling ubers. Caught in a pickle, a listener asks if there is a polite way to ditch her friends at a comedy show after being given better seats to the same event. One Betch's germ phobia is starting to take over all her thoughts and she asks Dr. Naomi for an intention to quell the constant anxiety. After her father dropped the ball on a contract, a woman is triggered that he didn't think to ask for help even though she is in fact a contract lawyer here. A bride is left upset after a childhood friend canceled her wedding RSVP and the hosts debate the circumstances of the seemingly last minute bail. Learn more about your ad choices.
