Episode Summary: In this episode of DriveTime Debrief, we explore the powerful practice of forest bathing, its scientifically-backed benefits, and how physicians can incorporate it into their busy lives. Originating in Japan in the 1980s, forest bathing, or Shinrin-Yoku, is a nature-immersion technique that has proven benefits for mental health, immune function, and cardiovascular well-being. Discover how spending even 10–15 minutes in nature can help reduce stress, boost immunity, and improve mindfulness. We share actionable tips to make forest bathing part of your routine and discuss how to introduce it to patients as a complementary wellness tool. What You'll Learn in This Episode: What Is Forest Bathing? Origin: Japanese preventative healthcare practice from the 1980s. Definition: Mindful immersion in nature to engage all the senses. Why It's Relevant for Physicians: High burnout rates in healthcare. Nature-based therapies as a tool for stress management and mental health support. The Science Behind Forest Bathing: Stress Reduction: 2010 study: Forest bathing lowers cortisol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate. Phytoncides from trees enhance relaxation. Immune Function: Dr. Ching Lee's research: Forest immersion boosts natural killer cells and immune health. Mental Health: 2019 meta-analysis: Reduces anxiety, depression, and fatigue by fostering mindfulness. Cardiovascular Health: 2011 study: Improves heart rate variability and parasympathetic tone. Practical Applications for Physicians: Micro-Doses of Nature: Visit parks or gardens for 10–15 minutes during breaks or after work. Weekend Retreats: Dedicate time for hiking, camping, or nature immersion. Mindful Nature Walks: Engage senses—listen to leaves, smell evergreens, touch tree bark. Techniques for Forest Bathing: Leave technology behind. Walk slowly with no set destination. Pause to sit, observe, and reflect. Introducing Forest Bathing to Patients: Encourage outdoor time for stress relief. Provide resources like local parks or trails. Share evidence-based benefits to improve adherence. Addressing Barriers: Lack of green spaces: Opt for urban parks, indoor plants, or natural soundscapes. Limited time: Start with brief 5–10 minute sessions. Weekly Homework Challenge: Take 10–15 minutes this week to immerse yourself in nature. Notice how you feel before and after. If you're unable to get outside, try listening to a natural soundscape or adding greenery indoors. We'd love to hear about your experience! Email us at podcast@thewholephysician.com. My guest is author and coach Nigel Jones who shares his own story as well as some inspiration and great advice! In this episode:- Nigel started drinking daily at 18, struggled to quit for 36 years. He found success with a mindset shift, declaring himself a non-drinker from day one. We talked more about this identity shift during our first podcast interview which you can listen to here Many of our members have found Nigel's identity shift to being a "non drinker" helpful  Rather than clocking up the sober days they declare themselves a non drinker from day one Apart from deciding that he was a non drinker Nigels strategies for quitting alcohol included Replacing drinking with new habits like walking. His "9 KM before 9 AM" walking routine led to a significant physical and mental transformation. Creating new neural pathways through consistent healthy habits. I shared my own habit change of going on a long walk every evening at 6pm which was my witching hour We both agreed on the stength of peer pressure to drink As drinkers we find ourselves in an alcohol drinkers tribe (ADT as Nigel calls it) When we decide to quit we need to find a new Tribe I went through this myself and I always say that recovery is about “finding your people” If you think Tribe Sober might be your people then go to tribesober.com and hit the membership tab Nigels benefits of sobriety included: Improved physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual well-being. Increased time and energy for personal development and learning – for example he Qualified in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and he's currently studying Hypnotherapy. Nigel's working on a New Book called Reroot Yourself His book focuses on the healing power of nature. Concepts like forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku) and the benefits of being in nature. Nigel highlighted the scientific evidence for the mental and physical benefits of nature exposure. He currently takes these concepts into corporates where he is observing a shift in attitudes towards mental health Nigels Advice for people wanting to quit… He advocates reading quitlit and listening to podcasts Also joining a new tribe for support and encouragement – a tribe to replace your drinking tribe I often say that to new members – you don't even have to quit drinking when you join Tribe Sober Just be curious, listen and learn.. and you'll get inspired to make a change As Nigel says curiosity can be a catalyst for change  Nigel is a coach and runs workshops in corpoprates Find out more about Nigel via his website 9kmby9am.com More info Subscription membership for Tribe Sober join up HERE To access our website click HERE If you would like a free copy of our "Annual Tracker" or our e-book "66 Days to Sobriety" please email janet@tribesober.com If you would like to come to our Saturday afternoon Zoom Cafe as a guest and meet our community just email janet@tribesober.com Episode Sponsor           This episode is sponsored by the Tribe Sober Membership Program.             If you want to change your relationship with alcohol then  sign up today           Read more about our program and subscribe HERE Help us to spread the word! This episode my guest is Alan Heeks, former corporate world inhabitant, organic farmer, coach and author of the book ‘Natural Happiness'. After his transition into organic farming, Alan realised that “a cultivated organic ecosystem is a profound guide to tending human nature, and that organic growth methods have parallels for people: such as composting your stress, and using crop rotation to avoid burnout.” We explore the idea further… About Alan Heeks Alan Heeks had a baptism by mud at age 42, when he dropped out of a successful business career and followed a wild impulse to start an organic farm as an education centre where young people could find their roots and direction as they entered adult life.       Despite Alan's lack of any relevant experience, the project succeeded, and gave him a huge education too. He explains, "I realised that a cultivated organic ecosystem is a profound guide to tending human nature, and that organic growth methods have parallels for people: such as composting your stress, and using crop rotation to avoid burnout."       Alan's new book about this approach, Natural Happiness, also draws on the workshops he has led for hundreds of people sharing his insights, from troubled teenagers to super-stressed NHS doctors. Alan and his wife Linda live in Hay-on-Wye, and grow many of their own vegetables.   Links www.naturalhappiness.net  Twitter  Facebook  LinkedIn  YouTube  Other episodes if you liked this one: Forest Bathing - Forest Bathing, or Shinrin Yoku, is the practice of immersing yourself in nature as therapy. It's the perfect antidote for those who feel disconnected from the land and unattached from nature, which is increasingly likely to happen in a world where 55% of us live in urban areas. In this episode, I speak to Stefan Batorijs who founded Nature and Therapy UK in 2017, as a response to a growing need to foster a spiritual and psychological connection to the land. If you've always wondered what Forest Bathing, or Shinrin Yoku, entails, this is the episode for you!

They focused on a new blend of essential oil, composed of various oils, that was recently released by Doterra. The discussion revolved around the properties and benefits of these oils, their role in promoting calm, mental clarity, and their potential for hormonal balancing and grief therapy. They also addressed the process of creating a blend and how it differs from using a single oil.   Fragrance Energetics and Forest Bathing Benefits Dr. Rose  discussed the concept of fragrance energetics and its application in blending oils. They explained the use of different notes such as top, middle, and base notes, and how they affect energy levels. Dr. Rose  also introduced the concept of forest bathing and its health benefits, emphasizing the importance of volatile oils found in trees. They likened the use of a specific oil blend to supplementing daily life with the benefits of forest bathing, including improved mood, cardiovascular support, and stress response. Dr. Rose  concluded by suggesting the use of the oil on the body or through a diffuser to experience similar benefits. Oil Benefits: Health, Nature, and Research Dr. Rose  shared statistics about the benefits of using a particular oil, such as a decrease in blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels, and an increase in lymphocyte counts and natural killer cells. Blair is all about Resilience. Most people would find a cave to hide in if they experienced the sequential losses of family members that Blair endured. But her story is not one of retreat. Quite the opposite, in fact. Hers is one in which “bouncing forward” defines resilience. For someone who says that she lives with depression and anxiety, this interview is filled with energy and genuine smiles. TheGlobalResilienceProject.com is both the name of her book and her passion project. Like a muscle that you train, learning to bounce forward when the time is needed takes five easy “secret” steps: Practice Gratitude - one way to do that is to list (or share with someone) three things that you're grateful for in the past 24 hours Fuel your body and your mind - What are you eating, drinking, and letting in mentally? From food to drama to media, get super aware of what's in and what's no longer allowed in. Forest Bathing or from the Japanese, Shinrin-Yoku, means to absorb the forest atmosphere. In short, just get outside! Sleep! Your body and your mind need sleep to integrate and restore. Plan your day around the sleep you need, not the other way around. Share your story! You're not alone and the best way to bounce forward is to share your story and maybe listen as someone else To find out more, go to: www.TheGlobalResilienceProject.com And www.BlairKaplan.ca (that's ca, not com because Yayyy Canada!)

Cancer. The very word can strike fear in the heart—and unfortunately, it touches many of us at some point in our lives, whether directly or indirectly through family and friends. But cancer… and herbs? What role can herbs possibly play in a big, scary, potentially deadly disease like that? If you're faced with a cancer diagnosis, what can you do to take control of your journey and feel empowered? Just as important, what steps can you take to help prevent cancer in the first place? These are just some of the issues covered in today's episode with Chanchal Cabrera—an herbalist with 35 years of clinical practice who specializes in holistic oncology. It was so good! And Chanchal's new book, Holistic Cancer Care, needs to be on everyone's bookshelf. It's an impressive and helpful book for anyone who's ever been touched by cancer, and even those who want to prevent it.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► What is patient-centered medicine, and why is it so vitally important when crafting a treatment plan?► Is it true that lymphatic herbs shouldn't be used by cancer patients? Why or why not?► Why sunscreen doesn't give you the protection you might think it does (and what you can do instead)► How can herbal medicine be included in cancer care, and what are some specific herbs that have been researched for this purpose?► Depending on the treatments selected and the cancer itself, patients may suffer with radiation burns and/or neuropathic pain. As a listener, you'll also receive free access to not one, but two downloadable recipe cards from Chanchal for soothing herbal creams. Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “I see the role of a herbalist as an incredible opportunity to connect people with plants in such a way that they actually care enough about the environment the plants grow in to do something active to help the environment. Really, I see herbalism as an extremely effective form of activism and I consider myself an environmental warrior, an environmental activist through my herbal medicine work.”For those who don't already know her, Chanchal is a medical herbalist and has been in clinical practice for 35 years with a specialty in holistic oncology. She is the author of Fibromyalgia: A Journey towards Healing and her latest book, Holistic Cancer Care: An Herbal Approach to Preventing Cancer, Helping Patients Thrive during Treatment, and Minimizing the Risk of Recurrence, launched in April. She held the faculty chair in Botanical Medicine at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster 2004-2016. She serves on the board of advisors of Dominion Herbal College in Burnaby, on the editorial board of Medical Herbalism clinical newsletter, and she publishes widely in professional journals and lectures internationally on medical herbalism, nutrition, and health.Chanchal is also a certified Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) practitioner, a certified Master Gardener and a certified Horticulture Therapist. She lives on Vancouver Island, British Columbia where she and her husband manage Innisfree Farm and Botanic Garden, a 7 acre internationally registered botanic garden specializing in food and medicine plants, and where they host apprenticeships in sustainable food production and herbal medicine. The farm also hosts Gardens without Borders, a federally registered not-for-profit society established to run the botanic garden and provide horticulture therapy. If you'd like to hear more from Chanchal, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get an easy link for her website and social media channels. We are familiar with bathing. Many have heard of or practiced forest bathing, which has gained momentum after Japanese studies have shown forest bathing improves sleep quality, mood, ability to focus, and stress levels. Nature therapy, sometimes referred to as ecotherapy, forest therapy, forest bathing, grounding, earthing, Shinrin-Yoku, or Sami Lok, is a practice that describes a broad group of techniques or treatments to use nature to improve mental or physical health. There is sunbathing and snow bathing but what about star bathing? Not just star gazing but bathing. In forest bathing, you spend time in the forest connecting with nature – the tree and root systems; when we lay upon the ground and look up under the canopy of a tree, we are suspended in the energy of the earth and the branches of the tree. The tree's roots connect us to dirt and root systems below us. The root systems connect us to water sources and mineral sources. If we go deep enough, we connect with flowing rivers, crystal beds, all the critters that live beneath, or maybe the rest of sleep there, and emerge to roam mother earth during the day or sleep during the day and roam at night. We go deeper, and we can connect with the lava systems. Star bathing is gazing at stars and bathing in their energy. Stars are always there, but we see them at night and see them even more apparent when we move away from the glow of city light pollution and being under the stars. It's the 5-billion-star review if you've ever had the opportunity to sleep outside under the stars. I've slept out in open space - Northern Minnesota, the deserts of Arizona, or the mountain tops of Peru – anywhere you don't have light pollution will give you a different view of the sky.For thousands of years, people have watched the stars and planets. The movement of the milky way and the cycles of the moon. Looking up for answers or direction – guidance. We've been drawn to the patterns in the skies, where there are 200 billion trillion stars, and of course, the sun is the biggest that we know of to date.   They have supported our ancestors and us for lifetimes. Listen as Laurie shares messages of the Stars. Support the showThanks for listening - For questions or comments email Laurie at Laurie@yourlifecore.comInstagram @yourlifecore or Twitter @yourlifecore Facebook https://www.facebook.com/YourLifecoreWebsite www.yourlifecore.com

Phil & Jake are joined by dear old pal Chon Travis (from Love Equals Death) to rank cops, strip clubs that serve food, and the activity known as forest bathing on the List of Every Damn Thing.Find Chon on Instagram (@therealchontravis) and Facebook (chon.travis), and check out his band Love Equals Death (follow that link to find out their show dates)! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The Cops television show was a reality TV show in which a camera crew followed police around. The police departments got final approval of what was included in the show but it was educational to see what police thought made them look good.  District Attorneys are adjacent to cops, but aren't exactly cops. Training Day is a movie about Denzel Washington as a bad cop. Columbo is TV good cop who is completely non-violent and walks around being an unassuming disheveled genius and catching rich people who do murders. Lethal Weapon is a movie about two cops, one of whom is a "Lethal Weapon" because he's suicidal. Die Hard is a movie about an off-duty cop and an on-duty cop (who shot a child while on duty) learning to trust each other. Beverly Hills Cop a movie about a cop from Detroit who goes to Beverly Hills and puts a banana in the tailpipe of cops there. Movie cops are always good or at least necessary. England is a country where cops don't carry guns. We discuss gun ownership. In the USA, 3 in 10 adults say they own a gun. It's something like 40% of men and 20% of women. RoboCop is another movie about cops in which the police force has been privatized. It's fantastic and Ronny Cox from Beverly Hills Cop is fantastic in it as Dick Jones. The Pinkertons were founded as a sort of private police force to crush labor. Rod Lavers shoes are Adidas sneakers named for the great Australian tennis star Rodney Laver. The Australian Open is played in an arena named for him as well. They're fantastic shoes but the best ones are white and it's hard to keep them clean. Firefighters are people who fight fire. When Phil imagined a fire that hated firefighters he was thinking of a little stinker like this guy. Clowns are people trying to make other people laugh. Commandos are special military units. Theodore Roosevelt was a US President and an extremely colorful character who's personally responsible for a lot of death and pain.  The Last Starfighter was a nice little movie that's somehow never been remade. It's about a kid in a trailer park who, by virtue of being good at video games, gets recruited into an interstellar war. Howard the Duck is a movie about a duck who falls in love with Lea Thompson. Capitalism is the system we live in that makes ethical consumption impossible. Middle school is a necessary evil, a place to put young teens. Gambit is a fictional character, a superhero and member of the X-men. He wears a long trench coat and a weird thing on his head. Hoarders is a TV show in which the pain and mental illness of real people is mined for cheap thrills.  Steven Seagal is a movie star who's been credibly accused of sexual assault and has incredibly accused himself of being a yogi, a holy man, a secret agent, a Navy SEAL & a martial arts master. The British Royal Family are pretty bad. Jon Voigt had been really good in a lot of films. He's as low as he is almost entirely because he said some stuff Phil & Jake didn't agree with. Phil even liked his accent in Anaconda. Jenny McCarthy is pretty low on the list because she has some trash opinions. 48 Hrs. was followed by a sequel, Another 48 Hours. The second sequel, 127 Hours, is a big departure for the franchise. Flashdance is probably underrated by us. Karina Longworth went into why in a recent episode of You Must Remember This.
