Music and beer. My perfect match. In fact, Tap That AZ was spawned from a segment of a music podcast I had back in 2016. It only makes sense that it comes full circle and I start to dive back into the music side of things. A yearly event that continues to grow, Flagstaff Blues & Brews on June 10th and 11th is a must-hit. The backdrop for the stage is the stunning view of Mt. Elden. The music coming from the stage is from popular national bands and some local gems. The beer flowing is some of the best in Arizona highlighted by Tower Station and Church Music. Join in as I sit down with Jennifer Grogan, owner of Peak Events, the awesome folks behind this great festival!
In Episode 4, we take a trip to the Southwest and discuss the Phoenix craft beer scene. Joel is joined by Greg Wellins (a brewery traveler) and Eric Walters (host of Tap That AZ podcast) to talk about a variety of topics. Some of what is covered: How Phoenix compares to other cities in the region, the best approach to exploring the beer scene there, what their favorite local breweries are, and more! You can follow Greg on Instagram: @gregvisitsbreweries You can follow Eric on Instagram: @tapthatazpodcast Brewery Travels is a podcast hosted by Joel Geier (aka Brewery Travels) that discusses a different city or region's craft beer scene in each episode. Joel interviews two local experts, ranging from beer writers and beer bloggers to people working in the industry and even like-minded brewery adventurers. Joel has visited over 700 breweries across 44 states plus Washington D.C. and has been able to make connections with many amazing individuals because of his travels. He is currently living on the road with his family, constantly “exploring more content and doing extensive research” (which just means visiting breweries and drinking beer)! The goal of Brewery Travels is to provide more information about craft beer scenes from around the country, as well as shine a light on some of the excellent individual breweries that call these cities home. From Portland, Maine to San Diego, California. Austin, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota. The bright lights of New York City to the farmland of rural Iowa. Brewery Travels plans to run the gauntlet of locations, providing in-depth information on as many places as possible. With episodes coming out weekly on Thursdays, Brewery Travels is where you can get your fix if you enjoy a craft beer or traveling. Cheers! Eric Walters loves Arizona beer. He loves Arizona beer so much he co-authored The Arizona Beer Book with Luke Irvin. There are 37 Arizona breweries featured in it broken up into sections: Central Arizona, Southern Arizona and Northern Arizona. Warning: this podcast does contain some cuss words. Yes, they are all Eric’s. On this episode, […]
Ok, so in my defense I DID post an instagram story about taking the rest of December off from putting out episodes. HOWEVER, I now realize how small of a scope it is and that was super weak on my part. Sorry bout dat. So heres what up: The Arizona Beer Book is out and it looks amazing! We have been getting that bad boy all over the state. Be on the lookout at your local Arizona brewery or taproom. We are also launching "A Taste of AZ" very soon to put the same efforts and heart into Arizona food as we do Arizona beer to highlight the people making great things happen. With that said Tap That AZ episodes will resume January 6th and we'll start off with a banger: another 2 part episode recorded live at the most recent AZ Wilderness Camp Coolship. Guests include Trve, Plan Bee, Black Project, and Fonta Flora among others. Yeah, you don't want to miss those. Thank you as always for your support!
We discovered The Brewbecue by their interview on Tap That Az. I commented on the IG post and Eric said they would be great for our show. He was right because The Brewbecue is so much more than smoked meat. They are a B-corp that leans into their charity work. This is exactly the type of start up business we want to talk with. The ownership team are all super laid back folks, but also incredibly insightful. They don't just do stuff just because. There is a lot of thought behind what they do and why they do it. They utterly destroy stereo types. I love meeting people like this. You hear that they were part of a metal band and jump to whatever conclusion you will*, and then they talk about thermodynamics of the smoker and you hear their heart for those in need and your mind explodes. The Brewbecue team is exactly the type of people we look for. Hard working craftsmen (and woman) who are thoughtful and intentional about what they do. We need so much more of this in Az. We unfortunately did not get to try their food at the interview, but we are going to try really hard to make it to their next event. Please follow them on Instagram and show them some love. If you have an event and need some Damn Fine barbecue, please reach out and contact The Brewbecue. Not only will you be helping a local business get started, but also supporting those in need here in Arizona. I would also like to thank our gracious host, Helton Brewing Company. They were kind enough to let us record out back so we had the area to ourselves. I highly recommend this place. The beer is fantastic.
While Episode 163 was being recorded in Detroit, Ken was visiting Dan down in Phoenix where they met up with Eric from Tap That AZ, and Arizona based craft beer podcast with well over 100 episodes covering the mass growth of craft beer down in Arizona! This was the second of two special episodes recorded down there along with Episode 163.5 with our friends from The Shop Beer Co. Check out both that episode and this one as we try AZ beer and learn the differences between the scenes! Don’t forget to listen to us live every Friday at 7pm EST on Facebook Live. I really love meeting and speaking with the people we interviewed for the Highlights mini-series. Eric was one of the first we interviewed, and he is the most experienced...I mean he does interviews for a living. Meeting Eric was a treat. He was so at home in the brewery and behind the microphone. AJ and I both commented on how natural he was and he handled the small things we missed, which is the proof of a craftsman. We are still learning how to interview, so whenever there were down times or odd little silences, Eric was able to fill that up and do it with ease. We felt like champion interviewers, but the reality is that he probably carried most of it. Eric is the host of Tap That AZ Podcast. I found his podcast a while ago when I was looking to learn about beer. What I found was a so much more. The stories these brewers have is remarkable. I learned so much from their journey and have been putting it into practice here. Eric approaches each conversation as an opportunity for the Brewer to tell their story the way they want to tell it. His genuine approach and desire to help people has resulted in an excellent network of people. I have been to multiple breweries who know him by name (not that I've name dropped or anything...more than...twice). It's no wonder he became the adopted son of the craft beer community. One of the reasons we love Tap That AZ so much is because Eric fosters community; which, as you know, is one of our pillars (see 4C's - Community). He is constantly building every one up and encouraging collaborations and celebrating each brewer. One of his goals is to be the main resource for craft beer in Arizona. With the support he has from the community, I don't think he will have any trouble achieving that. If you would like to support Eric and his work, please contribute to his Patreon. As I just stated, it takes the effort of the community to help people do awesome things. You can also visit his Instagram or Facebook and listen to his podcasts on iTunes. I would also like to say a special thank you to Richter Aleworks. They were incredibly gracious to let us meet and interview at their location. They served delicious beverages and took great care of us. If you are in Peoria, I encourage you to stop in. ***Please note that there is some swearing in this podcast. It is not any worse than what you would hear on prime time TV, but we want offer the courtesy of a warning just in case.
Episode 84 of #theSKYLERIRVINEshow with Podcast Celebrity Eric Walters of Tap That AZ Podcast. Eric moved to Arizona over 10 years ago and hasn’t felt the need the beat the heat since! His passion for podcasting started as a long-distance relationship with his friend back home in the form of a music podcast. Within the show was a segment titled, “What the f*ck are you drinking?” which triggered him to begin a podcast about the exploding craft beer scene in Arizona. Today, Eric travels to breweries, distilleries, and more to hear inspiring stories from entrepreneurs who want to make it happen in the craft beer scene.

As usual, let us know what you think of the podcast and what you would like us to talk about next. BETTER YET! CALL OUR VOICEMAIL AND BE A PART OF THE SHOW! (330) 8-TRAILS
The first time I saw Fayuca was at McDowell Mountain Music Festival in 2012. In between shows on the main stage we noticed a flock of people gravitating to the corner of the festival toward the local stage. As we got closer we could feel the energy of the crowd feeding off of this 3 piece band who was just killing it. Fronted by a charismatic singer/guitarist this band instantly won me over. The 2nd time I saw them was a few years later. By then they had grown to a 5 piece band but that same raw energy existed, and now even more so. They had grown from a raw kick ass local band to this polished amazing band that was on the path to greatness. When I started the Tap That AZ podcast I wanted intro music that meant something to Arizona. I had zero questions about where I wanted to get that music from and luckily lead singer/guitarist/founder Gabo was more than happy to allow me to use their song "La Negra Tomasa" as my theme music. I've been following Fayuca throughout the years and when I heard they were collaborating with Helio Basin Brewing Company I was ecstatic: my favorite local band (actually one of my favorites period) and one of my favorite breweries working together. Can't beat that. And then when they reached out and asked me to be a part of it? Hell yeah! No brainer! In this episode we talk with Gabo, his business partner BJ of "Made in Phx" and Helio Basin brewer Dustin to talk about the collaboration and Fayucas upcoming tour in which they'll play 16 shows in 22 days. On August 24th there will be a launch party for the beer at Helio Basin Brewing Company. In addition to the "Fayuca Rizing Summer Pale Ale" release there will also be live music and awesome merch. Come to the party! It will be awesome. Enjoy the show!
