A composer who has been capturing our imaginations for over 40 years, Alan Menken is best known for his stage and screen compositions for a slew of Walt Disney films and subsequent stage musicals. He was one of the creative powerhouses behind what has become known as the Disney Renaissance, composing for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin amongst many other titles. And that was all in addition to his non-Disney shows, which include the classic Little Shop of Horrors and the stage version Sister Act. He's received an extraordinary number of awards – 8 Academy Awards, a Tony, 11 Grammies, 7 Golden Globes and a Daytime Emmy. He's collaborated with some of the most well-known lyricists in musicals – including Howard Ashman, Stephen Schwartz, Tim Rice, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. In this conversation, Alan traces his journey from a musically curious child more interested in improvising than practising, to one of the most decorated composers in entertainment history. D. candidate in Physics at UC San Diego, researching the application and development of memcomputing systems, a novel computing paradigm. Identifying as a nontraditional student, Sean went from dropping out of high school to receiving the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. Deaf from the age of four Victoria was raised in a family who instilled a high value on educational achievement and a strong sense of social justice. Victoria gained a bachelor degree in New Zealand (without the support of sign language interpreters) followed by a Masters degree in the United States before returning to New Zealand in the late 1990's. Victoria's deaf identity began in her close relationship with her older deaf brother, both raised orally, and later flourished in the New Zealand Deaf community and the culture-affirming experience of attending a Deaf university (Gallaudet) in the United States. Victoria's first career was in psychology but she soon gravitated to human rights/disability rights work and moved into a series of strategic and policy roles across central government and NGOs. Victoria's life highlights include being the key government advisor on the development of the New Zealand Sign Language Act 2006; representing New Zealand disabled people's voices at the United Nations in Geneva in 2014; and receiving a Queen's Service Award for her services to the deaf and disabled communities in 2015. We watched the Disney animated classic “Aladdin," and we wish we could go back and watch it again for the first time. We've seen this movie countless times, and Robin Williams' unforgettable performance as Genie still makes us laugh to this day. We also have to talk about the power couple Aladdin and Jasmine. Aladdin was the first crush of many little queer boys across the land, and we all wanted to be Princess Jasmine (that hair!). Let's face it, this movie is FULL of queer representation - from the Genie's fierce impressions to Jafar mincing around the Agrabah Palace. And don't worry - we talk about the phenomenon that is #Jafarina (look it up). This movie is a bona fide classic, and maybe we're still singing "A Whole New World" in our heads, and maybe we're (definitely) singing Jasmine's solo.
