Episode 378 - Universally Hammered: Dracula Everyone knows the greatest heavyweight matchups of all time. Ali v. Frazier, Tyson v. Holyfield, Marciano v. Walcott. But for us, one matchup stands above the rest. Dracula v. Dracula, Lugosi v. Lee. A quick look at the stats shows no obvious favorite. Lugosi has the stamina and endurance, as well as one of the meanest mugs in the game. Lee has the obvious height and reach advantage. Couple that with his stunning technicolor, and he becomes a pretty formidable foe. But then again, Lugosi can turn into a f***ing bat, so there's no telling where this match could go, but this week we intend to find out. Last year Tom killed me with a pepper beer so after we were done with our Friday night Fresh Mountain Crystal he decided to put my heat sensitivity to the test, AGAIN! At least this time i knew it was coming and what I got was very delightful.
It's been ten years since Tom Nickel got to brew with fresh hop Crystal and let me tell you the world has been missing out! Tonight's beer has all the fruity-sweet notes of candied tangerines and it all comes from the Oregon grown Crystal hops in this Fresh Mountain Crystal IPA.
Direct from Oregon, Strada hops and all the dankness that they have to offer! Tom Nickel does not mess around when it comes to his hoppy beers and if he gets the chance to hijack the brewhouse and brew beers his way, things happen (like the now infamous Cheat Sheet IPA). He's done it yet again and made this My Way IPA.
One of the best parts of wet hopped beers is using a beer recipe that you already have and throwing in fresh hops where you might have used pelletized hops. Today's beer a riff off Nickel Beer's Vulcan IPA, but with the usage of Ramona grown Columbus, Centennial, Cascade and Chinook hops, it adds a softer hop experience on what is a big San Diego style IPA.
Bring on another wet hop beer! A tribute to the former hop growers Star B Ranch in Ramona, Standing Eagle IPA is beer hopped exclusively with locally grown Cascade hops. The flavor is one that really has to be tasted to be understood but we'll try and do a good job describing it to you!
It's Wet Hop season and there's almost no one in San Diego that digs as deep into these fresh hops as Tom Nickel from Nickel Beer Company! This week he's showcasing some of these amazing beers he's crafted that you can find at weekend #2 of O'Brien's Wet Hop Festival. We get things underway with a crispy pale ale featuring Ramona grown Chinook hops in what Tom calls Valley of the Sun Pale Ale.

Through the years, I've maintained transparency about my journey with alcoholism—a label I've embraced in the solitude of self-discovery. However, this characterization doesn't resonate with most individuals. The majority of drinkers engage in a marginally excessive indulgence in alcohol. While this behavior may not be catastrophic in the traditional sense, it does raise discernible concerns. The persistent hangovers, lethargy, and resulting melancholy it begets become tiresome. The desire to desist is tangible, but the seamless integration of alcohol into social and professional settings renders the prospect of abstention seemingly insurmountable. Today's guest found himself ensnared within precisely this behavior pattern. Ruari Fairbairns is a former oil broker from London who—after a falling out with booze—decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. Ruari, alongside collaborator Andy Ramage (featured in episode 444 in 2019), co-founded a pioneering institution, One Year No Beer, in 2015, a subscription-based bastion of sobriety with over 100,000 global members. Beyond his role as co-founder, Fairbairns co-authored the UK bestseller The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge. He also co-hosts the One Year No Beer Podcast, guiding listeners on a journey of wisdom and sobriety. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society's relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body. We explore the need for heightened awareness around alcohol, challenging the traditional narrative and embracing a healthier relationship with it. Ruari guides us through compelling discussions on stress, trauma, ADHD, emotional sobriety, and the pivotal role of community in the transformative journey. As we welcome the New Year and the possibilities it presents, I offer this conversation as an encouragement to consider the many ways in which alcohol continues to interfere with your health, hopes, and dreams.
