Life of the Record
The Making of THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE by Low - featuring Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk

For the 20th anniversary, Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk reflect on the making of the classic Low album, THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE. After Low had made several records in their signature slow and minimal style, they were beginning to expand their sound while recognizing the possibilities of the studio. For THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE, Low took their time recording with Steve Albini in Chicago and later enhancing the recordings with Tom Herbers in Minneapolis. The recordings represented a turning point for the band as they built the songs up more than they had in the past with guest musicians, lush string arrangements, layered harmonies and keyboard textures. Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk’s songwriting in this period was heavily influenced by the birth of their first child, Hollis, who also makes an appearance on the record. From writing mournful songs about the cycle of life to figuring out how to translate parts to string players to studying the original innovators in the studio, we’ll hear the stories around how the record came together.

“I’m A Different Guy After Lunch” That’s how David Duchovny describes the creative process—his point is that no matter when we return to an unfinished work, we’re a different person than when we started it. Whether that’s five months, five days, or right after lunch. We’re always different people. As for David Duchovny, well, he's one of those guys who wears many hats and they all fit. He’s a Golden Globe winning actor, the author of several books, a director, an environmentalist, a producer and a singer-songwriter. You know him from television shows like "The X-Files" and “Californiacation" and movies like “Kalifornia" and "Things We Lost In The Fire" but today we’re here to talk about his music. Sonically Duchovny's work is literate and rootsy, his voice a low rumble that moves through each number with dexterity and finesse. His phrasing and his lyrics bring to mind a thoughtful blend of Springsteen circa Human Touch and Lou Reed ’s New York. Duchovny is a busy guy—he can be seen in the new film "The Craft: Legacy," he’s just wrapped up his fourth book and his new single “Layin’ On The Tracks" is from his upcoming third solo album. If the song is any indication, it may very well be his best work yet. In this conversation Duchovny talks to Alex about protest songs, Bob Dylan and the rigors of the creative process. He also talks about tennis, David Foster Wallace and why he should have bought in Vancouver when he had a chance.....

RECORDED AS POP CULTURE CLUB:  One of my all-time favorite bands is Low.  They've been around for over 20 years, and I first heard them back in 2001 for the record Things We Lost In The Fire.  Now they are about to release their 11th full-length record next month entitled Ones & Sixes, and I couldn't be more excited to hear it based on the first two singles.  I play a sample of the first single, and end the show with the second single as well as a couple of snippets of two of my favorite Low songs. But most importantly, I got to spend a half hour talking with an incredible songwriter, Alan Sparhawk, who along with his wife Mimi, create music alongside bassist Steve Garrington.  Tickets are on sale now for their North American and European Tours.  Low will be joined by Andy Shauf, Two Gallants, Mike Noga (The Drones), and Chelsea Wolfe so this is a show you won't want to miss, and another interview that I couldn't be happier to share with you. Special thanks to Bekah at SubPop and Low's management for making this happen, and thank YOU for listening. "No Comprende" - Low
