Adam Levine's Guitar Teacher Carlos Calvo Loved every moment with my old friend, singer/songwriter/ guitarist/teacher Carlos Calvo. It had been far too long since we last chatted, pre-COVID. The world, art, and our lives have changed drastically since then. Carlos, with his wife and daughter, moved to Spain, for one. Most of his work and mine are now online. Gratefully, it felt like we were in the same room. Gotta love the Zoom. We caught up with the Calvos' relocation to a tiny hamlet in Galicia, the where, why, and when, and some family history plus a little geography to put things in perspective. We circled back to Carlos growing up in New Jersey, picking up a guitar at 3 1/2, his father's guidance to study classical guitar at Carnegie Hall, coming out to LA to attend the Music School... his early gigs, including working at the original Guitar Center and a customer named Stevie Wonder, for one. Great story there. Club gigs, and Tommy Tedesco opening the door to session work, while beginning to teach: first Dionne Warwick's son, a few other celebrity kids, and a few years in, 10-year-old Adam Levine, whom Carlos would school until Adam's first record deal. There was also Adam's neighbor, Jonah Hill, and his brother, Jordon Feldstein, who went on to become a prominent music manager (Maroon 5 from the band's inception), Joe Perry's son, two of Pamela Adlon's daughters, and Neil Diamond's son, which included sitting in on their family Thanksgiving dinner. Being called to teach guitar to actors who needed to play on film... like Californication, where he worked on set for years, first hired to teach Becca Moody, aka Madeleine Martin, then teaching a passionate David Duchovny how to play off camera and then working it into the show... his call with David today, now four albums of his own later. All the while doing his own singer/songwriter band thing. Throughout the pod, Carlos noodled a bit, including snippets of a couple of my impromptu requests, finally treating us to a taste of his guitar genius. Carlos and I have history. He opened for Micky Dolenz with Rob Morrow at a Women Who Write event in my living room, the two then generously playing at my book signing at Book Soup, then again at another WWW in my living room, with an unscheduled Esai Morales jumping up to sing some Beatles tunes with Carlos at the end of his set. Carlos' Hotel Cafe gig and his first appearance on Game Changers, at that time done face-to-face, also in my living room. Always warm, humble, enthusiastic, and fun, it felt like going home. I've missed my friend and had so much fun spending time, even if it was across the miles. I moved the show up two hours to accommodate the time difference, not realizing it'd be midnight for Carlos when we started. Not a peep of complaint, infact I was told he'd barely finished dinner. After multiple films and revival seasons, “The X-Files” creator Chris Carter finally got another shot at his often misunderstood film, “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.” The new R-rated cut restores disturbing imagery, reshapes the music, and even strips away some of the Mulder-Scully relationship material. It also commits what a certain corner of the fanbase may consider the ultimate R-rated act: Carter cut the Mulder-Scully kiss. But don't expect a “Snyder Cut” here. This cut is surprisingly shorter, with mostly very subtle changes for eagle-eyed fans.Now titled “The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn,” Carter's new version pushes the standalone thriller closer to the horror film he and co-writer Frank Spotnitz originally made. The movie reunites David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, years after they left the FBI at the end of Season 9, when a missing-agent case and a disgraced priest's psychic visions pull them into a grotesque experiment involving stolen bodies and severed parts.On the latest episode of “The Discourse Podcast,” Carter joined host Mike DeAngelo to dig into what changed, why he traded some romantic material for bigger scares, and whether fans might ever see the larger Mulder and Scully story still sitting around in his head. He also discussed the unfinished business of Season 11, his conversation with Ryan Coogler about the “X-Files” reboot, and the horror fable he and his wife have made, “Queens for a Day.”

Once the technology stopped demanding top billing, Daniel marked the surreal end of nearly a decade at his old job, wondered when his brain would finally stop checking broken servers out of habit, and looked ahead to sixteen days of detox, Zach's wisdom-tooth recovery, and a much more exciting new chapter.The boys mapped out Adam's Florida visit and their pilgrimage to Big Fatty, accidentally canceled next week's show and then uncanceled it, and took Contact on a tour through peppermint spider control, movie trivia, birthday wishes, and the dangerously lavish celebrity-death jackpot. Daniel also explained why his ongoing feud with Joe Betance is basically vintage radio theater, unveiled his lovingly fabricated 1985 radio station, and learned that Adam is apparently number ten—even behind someone who is not on the show. A 4 p.m. comedy outing introduced a chatty twink boy, inspired a red-light/green-light system for human interaction, and somehow ended at bathhouse etiquette. As one does.The News Game and bonus trivia then became a live demonstration of why we test things, with mysterious buzzers, disappearing answers, Disney quotes, carnivorous plants, and Daniel's exhausted head brain doing its level best. In an episode we first ran back in 2014, we explore how a sunken nuclear submarine, a crazy billionaire, and a mechanical claw gave birth to a phrase that has hounded journalists and lawyers for 40 years and embodies the tension between the public's desire for transparency and the government's need to keep secrets.   Whether it comes from government spokespeople or celebrity publicists, the phrase “can neither confirm nor deny” is the perfect non-denial denial. It's such a perfect deflection that it seems like it's been around forever, but reporter Julia Barton takes us back to the 1970s and the surprising origin story of what's now known as a “Glomar Response.” With help from David Sharp and Walt Logan, we tell the story of a clandestine CIA operation to lift a sunken Soviet submarine from the ocean floor and the dilemma they faced when the world found out about it. It's an episode we first released in 2014, but given some things in the news recently, it resonated with us again. In the 40 years since that operation, the Glomar Response has become boilerplate language from an array of government agencies. With help from ProPublica editor Jeff Larson and NPR's Dina Temple-Raston, we explore the implications of this ultimate information dodge. ACLU lawyer Jameel Jaffer explains how it stymies oversight, and we learn that, even 40 years later, governmental secrecy can be emotionally painful. More information about Glomar: After 40 years, many of the details of Project Azorian are only now coming to light. The US government's default position has been to keep as much of it classified as possible. It took three years for retired CIA employee David Sharp to get permission to publish his account of Project Azorian. And FOIA played an indirect role in that, as Cold War historians got the CIA to release, in redacted form, an internal history of the mission. After that and a threat of legal action, Sharp was finally able to publish his manuscript in 2012. We mentioned conspiracy theories that have swirled around Project Azorian filling the void where official silence has reigned. One of them is promulgated in the 2005 book “Red Star Rogue” by Kenneth Sewell and Clint Richmond. They posit that the K-129 was taken over by rogue Stalinist KGB agents in order to start a nuclear conflict. But the conflict was to be between the US and China, as, according to the authors, the sub had powers to disguise its sonic signature as a Chinese Navy vessel. This book is the basis of the 2013 drama “Phantom,” which features Ed Harris and David Duchovny as Soviet military officers who sip vodka in a very un-Russian way. Russian Naval historians, like Nikolai Cherkashin, are not only insulted by this take on the cause of the K-129's demise, they say the true cause is much easier to pinpoint: They say an American vessel, possibly the USS Swordfish, collided with the Soviet submarine. Despite the fact that the US government has turned over many documents about Project Azorian and what it found to the Russian government, many in the Russian Navy stand by their theory that it was far too easy for the US to locate the K-129 on the bottom of the Pacific, given the technology of the time. According to these theories, Project Azorian was nothing more than an elaborate cover-up disguised as ... an elaborate cover-up. We can neither confirm nor deny that we exactly understand how that would have worked in practice or execution. Tread Perilously concludes its month of TV movies with The Night Stalker. But odd details -- like certain puncture wounds on the victims' necks and the complete loss of blood -- lead the intrepid reporter to suggest law enforcement is dealing with a man who thinks himself a vampire. Kolchak's current girlfriend, who works at a saloon, goes one step further: maybe the killer is a vampire. Can it be true? Will Kolchak accept that possibility? Will it change the course of his life forever? Erik and Justin return to one of their favorite TV characters in his first appearance. The early '70s Las Vegas setting gives them a lot to chew on, as does star Darren McGavin's irresistible charm. They also clarify the connection between the title and certain real-life killers. Erik finds an unlikely new role for David Duchovny. Claude Akins makes his triumphant Tread Perilously return. Nuances about vampires are explored. Alternate casting choices for Blade Runner emerge. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit "Return to Me", the heartfelt romantic comedy starring David Duchovny and Minnie Driver.Mike Field has long had a soft spot for this one, while Mike Butler watched it for the first time. Even though it opens with the sudden death of Duchovny's wife and the emotional setup of a heart transplant, the movie manages to stay surprisingly upbeat, cheerful, and warm throughout.The ensemble cast is a huge part of what makes it work. Jim Belushi and Bonnie Hunt shine as Minnie Driver's sister and brother-in-law, bringing humor and heart to nearly every scene they are in. Robert Loggia and Carroll O'Connor also add a comforting, lived-in charm that elevates the entire film. Highlights from our biggest live show yet! We're thrilled to share our first ever live episode, recorded in September 2025 at The Royal Opera House in front of 2200 Dish fans. Our guest, Jack Whitehall, is an English comedian, presenter, actor and writer - and no stranger to stages of such grandeur.  Jack joined us to help settle Nick and Angela's nerves and provide just a little bit of chaos in our on-stage kitchen. The role involved some cheffing skills, which come much more naturally to Jack than his father Michael, who is in the crowd for this show.
