As NPR Music's Daoud Tyler-Ameen and Ann Powers discuss on this week's episode, there's a thread of loss running through some of the most notable, thrilling albums out on September 27. From the self-titled, posthumous album by the Scottish electronic producer SOPHIE to the harsh, alien sounds created by Alan Sparhawk on White Roses, My God, his first solo album following the death of his wife Mimi Parker, who was also his musical partner for decades in the great band Low, tributes to loved ones lost and voices from the beyond abound. Plus: The star-studded debut album from Toronto poet and songwriter Mustafa, an adventurous bluegrass album (emphasis on grass) by roots champ Billy Strings, reliably adventurous R&B from Bilal and another posthumous release, the final release from the beloved electronic act Broadcast.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Art Hounds podcast serieshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/art-hounds/id525807829Space cowboys and stolen moonMaria Ghassemlou of Minneapolis is a longtime Minnesota Fringe house manager, and that's where she saw the play “Moonwatchers” in 2022. The two-person show won the Best in Venue and Underdog awards that year. Now, she's delighted to share that the show is back at Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis. The show is created and performed by Corey Farrell and Nigel Berkeley, who attended the University of Minnesota / Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training program together. The show opens tonight and runs through Sept 22. Maria says: “Moonwatchers” is a show where there's two office workers, and their job just happens to be watching the moon and making sure that things happen on time — just a normal office job — but something goes awry when somebody steals the moon. Now they have to go on an adventure to go find it. This is a two-person show where they play multiple characters. There's Space Cowboys, there's aliens, cows, space Jane Austin and space grass. It's just a lot of silly and fun.— Maria GhassemlouCloudland celebrates DIY spiritPhil Schwarz of Minneapolis volunteers at Extreme Noise Records, and he wants people to know about Cloudland Theater, a 150-seat music venue on East Lake Street that celebrates its first anniversary this fall. He describes Cloudland as filling a need for a small venue for DIY musicians (read: artist book gigs themselves) outside of a traditional bar setting. Phil says: There's not a lot of smaller venues in town. And when venues came back [after pandemic closures], there was an explosion of new bands and stuff, and a lot of these venues were a lot harder to book shows in, so Cloudland came along at a perfect time. The shows are very intimate: you can converse with the musicians and stuff like that, and it's very kind of communal. I'm super excited for Feast of Lanterns, which features Alan Sparhawk of the band Low and also Pete Biasi, who used to be in a great post-punk band from here called Signal to Trust. It's kind of different than what Alan's done with Low: I would say noise punk and more abrasive. They will be playing Saturday, September 21 at Cloudland.— Phil SchwarzPortraits of fame on displayGabi Marmet is a senior at The Blake School in Minneapolis, where she works on the student journal, Spectrum. She had a chance to interview Blake alum Thea Traff, who has photographed portraits of President Joe Biden, the Rolling Stones, Rachel Weisz, Sofia Coppola and Jessica Chastain, among a host of other entertainers and newsmakers, for such publications as The New Yorker and New York Times Magazines. A selection of her mostly black and white photography is on display at the Bennett Gallery at the Blake School, open to the public through early October. Gabi was struck by how Thea got her start as a Blake student taking photographs, and how her current schedule means sometimes she'll get a call and have 48 hours to show up and photograph a subject. Gabi says: They're all very different styles, depending on the person. The Rolling Stones looked like they were having such a fun time in their photo shoot; they were just like laughing or like smiling really big.(Most impressive photography subject, in Gabi's opinion? Actor and singer Ben Platt — Gabi's a fan.) — Gabi Marmet

The slowcore sound can be simplified down to tempo and a minimalist approach, but like every genre or subgenre of rock music, there are always those pushing the boundaries and reinventing. On the 1996 album Three Sheets To The Wind by Idaho, the boundary pushing comes as a pair of straight-up rock songs that wouldn't sound out place on a Dinosaur Jr. or Heatmiser album. From there, the band adds jazzy and soulful elements - brushed drums here, an electric piano there - paired with Jeff Martin's evocative vocal that falls somewhere between the folky sadcore of American Music Club's Mark Eitzel and the more experimental post-rock of Low's Alan Sparhawk. Recordamos os álbuns “Double Negative”, de 2018 e “I Could Live in Hope”, o primeiro disco, de 1994.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On November 5th, we learned the sad news that Mimi Parker of the band Low had passed away from ovarian cancer. Mimi was only 55, but had done so much in her life as a mother, as a musician, and as a human. She was married to her bandmate, Alan Sparhawk, and they made thirteen albums together from 1994 to 2021 as the band Low. Rachel Stevens talks with KEXP Digital Content Producer Janice Headley and DJ Kevin Cole about Mimi's voice and her profound impact on the music world.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Co-host of the podcast, Straight White American Jesus, Brad Onishi returns to the VCW hall to talk about his forthcoming book (January 6, 2023) "Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism- And What Comes Next". While we are all seeing a rise in Christian Nationalism in our present political moment, Brad traces the history of how we got to this religious and political moment while examining his own roots being raised in southern California. We discuss the Barry Goldwater campaign, the conspiracies of the John Birch Society, Richard Nixon and the merging of conservative Evangelism fully with right-wing populism during the Ronald Reagan presidency. Over the course of this history we begin to see that, in the Trump-era, nothing really has changed that much. At the end, we also share some thoughts on the passing of Mimi Parker of Low, in light of our recent conversation with her husband Alan Sparhawk. In 2020, I interviewed Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of the indie rock band Low, whose 1999 album Christmas is one of the great indie Christmas albums, and a bold one because rock bands didn't record Christmas music at the time--at least not like that. Maybe they'd contribute a track to a label promo compilation, but they wouldn't tie their financial and artistic futures to such an unlikely project. Low's music at the time was dubbed "slowcore," and while it wasn't necessarily slow, they did stake out a very individual musical space that was driven by introspection and meditation more than energy. When I interviewed Alan and Mimi, they were sitting at a table at home in Duluth, Minnesota, and even though we were on opposite ends of a Zoom call, the coziness of their space and the conversation gave the conversation a vibe I'll remember. I'm re-posting this interview because on the weekend, Mimi Parker died of ovarian cancer. People have been sharing photos and memories of Mimi on social media, so I wanted to add our conversation to the demonstrations of love for her, the band and the way they moved through the world.
Last weekend we lost Mimi Parker, an artist we hold very dearly in our hearts. Mimi was a core member of Low with her husband, Alan Sparhawk. Her role as a restrained drummer and singer solidified the band's legacy early on in their career, along with Sparhawk's creative vision of music played as silently and slowly as possible. On this episode we pay tribute to her by remembering her name and playing songs from other bands that may have influenced Low, and may probably have been influenced by them. Today it is a lot colder in the world.
This week on the show, Joe Rainey. Hailing from Minnesota, he's a pow wow singer of the Red Lake Ojibwe tribe. He's known for collaborations with Bon Iver, Chance the Rapper and Alan Sparhawk of Low, and in May he released his debut solo album, Niineta on Justin Vernon's 38do3d label. Created in conjunction with producer Andrew Broder, it pairs his vocals with samples culled from his vast collection of pow wow tapes, thundering percussion, and dense, thickly layered electronic soundscapes. With its double-meaning titles like “No Chants” and “Easy on the Cide” nodding toward Rainey's understated sense of humor, Niineta takes on a collage-like quality that bends time. He joined us from to discuss his days traveling the pow wow circuit, how the collaboration with Broder came to be, and his teenage interest in rap. Thanks for checking out Transmissions. Next week on the show: Sam Cohen.
In this special and occasionally heavy episode, we were honored to have Alan Sparhawk from the band Low visit the VCW hall to chat about his music, his religious journey with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and faith and hope. We discuss how faith and hope are different but play together, moments of transcendence, and the feeling of bumping into something holy. Knowing that Zach is a cancer survivor, Alan wanted to talk about the biggest thing happening in his life right now, as his wife and bandmate Mimi is currently undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. We were so grateful for this conversation, and for Alan's openness and desire for authentic connection during a very difficult time, and hope you'll join us in sending love, positive thoughts, prayers, or whatever you see fit in support of Mimi. As a long time fan of the band Low, Carmel Holt realized that she hadn't heard many (or perhaps any?) interviews that focused on drummer, singer, and songwriter Mimi Parker. When they sat down together for an interview back in January of this year, Carmel couldn't have anticipated how important and rare this conversation would be. In addition to hearing about her nearly three decade journey with Low, the band she co-founded and has been in with her husband Alan Sparhawk since 1993, and the new high water mark of their latest album - 2021's Hey What - what Mimi Parker opens up and shares with us in this very special SHEROES interview was something she had not yet discussed publicly. And as their U.S. tour starts back up in less than a month, it's an amazing time to hear this SHERO'S journey.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Joe Rainey. Originally from South Minneapolis, Joe is A member of the Red Lake Nation of Ojibwe people and began attending and singing at pow wows from an early age, as well as becoming a pow wow singing archivist. Eventually ending up in Wisconsin, Joe began guesting with different musicians, working with people like Alan Sparhawk of Low, Bon Iver, Chance the Rapper, among many others. This eventually led to his debut album Niineta, which he composed with producer and artist Andrew Broder and which was released at the end of May on Justin Vernon's label 37d03d! In the first episode of SEASON SEVEN (whoa!), or the 37th episode overall, Kevin welcomes Duluth-based singer and songwriter Sarah Krueger to the program—you might know her as Lanue, the name she released a full length LP under in 2021, and the name she released a brand new EP under in mid-April. She and Kevin chop it up about her new batch of tunes, real hip-hop, the ability to separate the artist and the art they make, and the "scene" in Duluth; Sarah also brings an eclectic mix of 10 songs to the show and discusses what parts of her life they represent. My look back at the highlights of The Twelve Songs of Christmas this week come from from a transitional period. I had good and very different conversations with musicians with very different careers, including the pop purists Hanson, the bluegrass crossover artist Rhonda Vincent, and indie rapper Mega Ran. This week's show includes excerpts from those conversations, along Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low, and Martin Lynds and Jen Gunderman of The Ornaments, a band of Nashville session players who at the time of the interview had played the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack for 14 years running. One note on this episode: I was surprised when I grabbed the file for the Rhonda Vincent interview that I found my voice distorted on it. It didn't sound like that when I produced the episode, but there's not much to do about that now. I tried to minimize how much of me you needed to hear in that excerpt, but you needed some of my fuzzy voice to give her answers context. If this is the first of your retrospective episodes, you can hear the first two here and here. If you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, and Spotify. During our post-Christmas break, we went live on the IHeartRadio platform, TuneIn, Audible, and Amazon's podcast platform. Now, you can ask Alexa and Siri to play the Twelve Songs of Christmas podcast and let them pop it up on your voice-controlled personal assistant. Here in New Orleans, it's Mardi Gras, so I'm taking the rest of this week and the start of next week to be part of my city. We'll meet again in two weeks.
This week Joe talks to Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker from the band Low. They share both the difficult and productive experience they've had at home over the last two years and why the pandemic effected them more than expected. They discuss the process of making their new Grammy nominated record Hey What (out now on Sub Pop records), how the final sound was established in the writing process and why Alan is taking a new approach to his guitar sound. With several shows booked in Europe and the U.S., Alan and Mimi express their excitement and apprehension of touring and what they're most looking forward to. For this Christmas season, producer Jay Landers put together "A Sentimental Christmas with Nat "King" Cole," an album that refreshes some of Cole's holiday classics with new arrangements and a handful of new duets with new singing partners Johnny Mathis, John Legend, Gloria Estefan and more. Today on the show, Landers talks about the hows of whys of putting together this kind of project, and why Cole continues to sing these duets well after his death. Kristin Chenoweth and Calum Scott are two of Cole's singing partners this time around, and they talk about the experience, Cole, and what they learned about him in the process. Singer Alexandra Scott returns this week to talk about Icelandic pop artist Dadi Freyr and the Christmas songs he released in 2020 and 2021. This episode ends with a lovely cover of Low's "Just Like Christmas" by Gabrielle Aplin. Last year, Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker appeared on Twelve Songs in an episode that felt surprisingly intimate and, perhaps for that reason, became more personal than I expected. Alan Sparhawk, along with his spouse (and previous Essential Tremors guest) Mimi Parker), have, as Low, managed to not only maintain a collaborative and marital union for the better part of thirty years, but to constantly forge ahead artistically over the course of their 13 studio albums. Somehow managing to sound familiar but also intriguingly new with each release, the band has consistently retained the intimacy of their earliest work while also taking bold risks that continually endear them to new listeners and earn them ever greater critical accolades. Their newest record, HEY WHAT, was released by Sub Pop on September 10, 2021. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Low the band, the band Low (making sure I get my SEO straight there) is one of the greatest rock bands of the past 30 years and a perfect fit for a show talking about death, life, and transformation. Most Low interviews touch on their Mormon faith, and there's a bit of that here. But I was more interested in the personal feelings and faiths of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker (the married couple who form Low's consistent core), so we veer in the direction of doubts, breakdowns, the joy and obligation of Christmas, and whether or not justice is punitive. Alan also requests highly specific funeral plans while Mimi takes notes, and we laugh a bunch (which I consider a huge personal win). For the 20th anniversary, Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk reflect on the making of the classic Low album, THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE. After Low had made several records in their signature slow and minimal style, they were beginning to expand their sound while recognizing the possibilities of the studio. For THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE, Low took their time recording with Steve Albini in Chicago and later enhancing the recordings with Tom Herbers in Minneapolis. The recordings represented a turning point for the band as they built the songs up more than they had in the past with guest musicians, lush string arrangements, layered harmonies and keyboard textures. Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk’s songwriting in this period was heavily influenced by the birth of their first child, Hollis, who also makes an appearance on the record. From writing mournful songs about the cycle of life to figuring out how to translate parts to string players to studying the original innovators in the studio, we’ll hear the stories around how the record came together.
Low is one of the great bands of the last 25+ years. Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker have been making transcendent, challenging, beautiful music consistently since they started Low. Alan Sparhawk is my guest this week on The Trace. We talk about his childhood and how he fell in love with music. We dive into specific Low songs plus talk Neil Young, Robert Plant, and even Spike Lee. We touch on religion/spirituality, where songs come from, mental health, and our need for disruptive art. Low's discography is truly impressive. Listen to their early classics like "The Curtain Hits the Cast" and "Secret Name" then see how far out they have ventured musically with "Drums and Guns" and "Double Negative". You never know exactly what you will get sonically with Low - you just know it's gonna be good. Thanks to Alan for such a wonderful and open conversation. So here we go! (Also - do yourself a favor and listen to their track "Landslide" some time this week.)

The American rock band Low recorded one of the newer contenders for a spot in the Christmas music canon when it cut "Just Like Christmas" for its 1999 EP, Christmas. As Low's Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker reveal, the EP emerged spontaneously, driven in part by wondering whether they could intentionally write a body of Christmas songs. The EP became an important part of the life of the band in a number of ways as it helped to get them attention and money at a time when they needed both. It has become enough of a part of the band's story that Low has returned to Christmas music a couple of times--in 2008 with "Santa's Coming Over" (which doesn't appear in the podcast) and in 2016 with "Some Hearts (at Christmas Time"). In the episode, we talk about Low's "Taking Down the Tree" from Christmas, and mention but don't play Tracey Thorn's cover of the song. It's excellent and well worth hearing. We also talk about a Gap ad from 2000 that featured Low's version of "Little Drummer Boy." As a member of Let’s Active, Romweber was a pivotal part of the Chapel Hill indie rock scene—as a North Carolinian, Josh brought his ground-level view to her legacy and impact on the world of independent rock & roll. And finally, we join Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low at the Valley Bar in downtown Phoenix, to discuss the band’s 12th album, Double Negative, a noisy, some times claustrophobic look at our present moment. Perhaps no record has more accurately captured the confusion and tension of the current digital and societal moment.
Here are more podcast highlights than you can shake a stick at. In fact, put that stick down and if you haven't already, download the BBC Sounds App and listen on there. Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk of Low chat about their magnificent album Double Negative. There's Eleanor Friedberger on the music she enjoyed as a kid and how she ended up in a Pavement video. Hear the brilliant Khruangbin, that's Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald "DJ" Johnson. If you don't know them, the clip in this podcast will give you the run down on who they are, their diverse influences and the brilliant music they make. And Stuart tries to find something that everybody likes.
Today’s episode features Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and Low’s Alan Sparhawk—and it's the first to be curated by Talkhouse’s new Executive Editor Josh Modell, who joins me to introduce it. (Welcome, Josh!) Ben and Alan’s talk goes all the way back to the earliest days of their bands, and up to the present with the fantastic LPs they each recently dropped. We hear about the formative teenage moments when seeing bands changed their lives; staying open to new sounds as "men of a certain age playing rock & roll;" Ben blatantly ripping off Low on his earliest Death Cab material; and how Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock spent a long time looking like he’d just crawled out of a dumpster. Feel free to DM me to let me know which artist(s) you’d love to see appear on a future episode. —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer This episode was recorded at Bad Animals in Seattle, by Maija Jenson at KUMD 103.3 FM Duluth Public Radio, and by Mark Yoshizumi at Hook and Fade Studios in Brooklyn. It was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low tell Jay about their late-night set plans, the Duluth-Eau Claire connection, and a festival encounter with Iggy Pop.
Low's Mimi Parker uses a deliberately limited sonic palette to create sprawling rhythmic landscapes. The master of nuance and shading talks to Joe about: growing up on a farm, meeting her future bandmate and husband--Alan Sparhawk--in fourth grade, her aversion to the spotlight, her secret desire to become a comedian, and her hopes for her children.
Violinist/fiddle player Gaelynn Lea came to Houston fresh off of performing at South by Southwest and spent some time with the Classical Classroom(and Skyline Sessions – check out her video performances!). She talks about how music has gradually become her life. From first finding an instrument that was right for her body as a kid (she has a rare condition called Brittle Bones Disease that means she’s got different physical challenges than others), to meeting and collaborating with Alan Sparhawk (of the band Low), to winning the Tiny Desk Contest and selling her home to go on tour. Music in this episode: Violin Partita, No 1 in B Minor “Gentle,” by Low from Ones and Sixes Plus, music performed by Gaelynn Lea Audio production by Todd “Turnt Up” Hulslander with dinosaur acts by Dacia Clay and help from Mark DiClaudio.
Alan Sparhawk from the minimalist indie-rock band Low talks about his personal songwriting process. Identifying ideas, putting the work in, and using techniques sparingly are all discussed. Listen to a fragment of a new song he’s piecing together, as well as a more fleshed out live performance of a brand new, never-before-heard track.
RECORDED AS POP CULTURE CLUB: One of my all-time favorite bands is Low. They've been around for over 20 years, and I first heard them back in 2001 for the record Things We Lost In The Fire. Now they are about to release their 11th full-length record next month entitled Ones & Sixes, and I couldn't be more excited to hear it based on the first two singles. I play a sample of the first single, and end the show with the second single as well as a couple of snippets of two of my favorite Low songs. But most importantly, I got to spend a half hour talking with an incredible songwriter, Alan Sparhawk, who along with his wife Mimi, create music alongside bassist Steve Garrington. Tickets are on sale now for their North American and European Tours. Low will be joined by Andy Shauf, Two Gallants, Mike Noga (The Drones), and Chelsea Wolfe so this is a show you won't want to miss, and another interview that I couldn't be happier to share with you. Special thanks to Bekah at SubPop and Low's management for making this happen, and thank YOU for listening. "No Comprende" - Low
