This week we pay tribute to the late Mario Pavone, with an epic live set in which his majestic bass sound propelled the Thomas Chapin Trio into the stratosphere at the 1995 Newport Jazz Festival. The rest of the playlist revolves around modern jazz guitar, with two different way to pay tribute to Bill Frisell by the Unscientific Italians and Skuli Sverrison, the revelatory new albums by Hungarian guitarist Csaba Palotai (with Steve Arguelles) and French guitarist Paul Jarret, the guitar talk of Joel Harrison and Pete McCann in tribute to Vic Juris (for Harrison's new imprint ASG), and the solo soundpainting of Lake Michigan by Scott DuBois. Completing the dense playlist, are the new albums by Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas' Soundprints Quintet, the first of new material after a string of Wayne Shorter tribute albums, Tell No Lies and Ocelot. The playlist features Mario Pavone, Thomas Chapin, Mike Sarin; Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas; Tell No Lies; Paul Jarret; Unscientific Italians; Skúli Sverrisson with Bill Frisell; Csaba Palotai, Steve Arguelles; Joel Harrison; Scott DuBois; and Ocelot. Thelonious Monk once said "play what you want and let the public pick up on what you are doing even if it does take them 15, 20 years". Luckily, he lived long enough to become fully embraced and celebrated before his passing. However, it's after his death that his music has really become central to the jazz canon. To mark the thirty-seventh anniversary of his demise, on 17 February 1982, this week we feature a very diverse range of renditions of his masterpieces. The playlist includes Cootie Williams, Paul Motian, Carmen McRae, Georg Gräwe, Duck Baker, Allen Toussaint, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall, Gianluca Petrella, Lindsey Horner, Brad Mehldau, Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, Gary Thomas, Quincy Jones, Miles Okazaki, Frank Kimbrough, Thomas Chapin, Ran Blake, Jeanne Lee, Tronzo Trio, Steve Lacy, Charlie Rouse, Barry Harris, Ernst Reijseger, Thelonious Monk. How do we handle an unfair justice or undeserved mercy? Living in the Kingdom of God is like this.
The boys take a quick trip through the tragically short career of Thomas Chapin, an inside/outside sax and flute player whose flame burned brightly and briefly. Then Mike complains about Kate Bush for a while. Thomas Chapin – NEVER LET ME GO – DISC 2; THIRD FORCE; Peggy Stern – THE FUSCHIA; Holly Hofmann – LIVE AT BIRDLAND.
