In this episode, I sit down with vocalist, composer, and guitarist Becca Stevens for a conversation that moved me in ways I honestly wasn't expecting.We start with life right now for Becca: juggling touring, writing, teaching, and “momming” two little ones. She talks about how becoming a parent has completely reshaped her artistry, forcing a new level of efficiency, deepening her sense of purpose, and shifting her focus from serving herself to serving the song (and her kids). There's a beautiful thread here about how parenthood strips away the illusion that we are the most important thing, and how that shows up in her singing and writing.From there, we go back to the North Carolina School of the Arts, where everything really changed for her. Becca shares how she went from being the misunderstood “class clown” to finding her footing in an arts environment, discovering classical guitar almost by accident, and realizing that music alone was more than enough for a lifetime of exploration. We also talk about how jazz became her teenage rebellion, and how a wildly diverse listening palette—Bartók, Steve Reich, Joni Mitchell, Björk, and more still fuels her fearless tendency to never stay in one musical lane for long.Becca also takes us inside the creative process behind several key projects:The string quartet project with Attacca Quartet and the way those arrangements reshaped her own songsThe intimate, live-tracked world of Maple to Paper, where it had to be one guitar, one voice, and total honestyThe studio-crafted layers of Wonder Bloom, built from tiny seeds into full sonic collagesWe dig into her deep love of collaboration and what it's like to work with some truly legendary musicians, including Antonio Sánchez, Jacob Collier, Brad Mehldau, Scott Colley, and more. In this episode, I'm joined by John Mailander, a fearless and lyrical fiddler/violinist whose work bridges bluegrass, jazz, ambient improvisation, and songcraft. We trace his path from San Diego to Berklee (where he studied American Roots with mentor Darol Anger) to Nashville, where he found a close-knit community that's as experimental as it is supportive. John discusses the city's “weirdo music” scene, ambient nights, free improvisation, and oddball collaborations, and how that energy coexists alongside the touring calendar. We dig into his life-changing chair with Bruce Hornsby: the no-setlist ethos, learning the “top 80” deep-cut originals, living on the edge together, and the night Bruce rearranged the stage so John could stand next to John Scofield, then kept tossing them intertwined solos all evening. John shares recent runs with Sam Grisman (with hero Peter Rowan onboard), producing and recording more from Nashville, and the origin of his own band Forecast, a genre-porous collective inspired by Bill Frisell, Brian Blade Fellowship, Pat Metheny/Brad Mehldau, and Joni Mitchell. We talk through the new record Let the World In: how residency nights at Dee's in Madison shaped the tunes, why the drums sound so alive, and why he welcomes rotating lineups to hear the same music through new lenses. Teaching and mentorship thread through the conversation: passing on what was given to him (formally and backstage between songs), honoring influences like Matt Mundy (ARU/Bruce Hampton), and why the point isn't “pushing boundaries” as a goal but playing honestly enough that the music pushes itself. In 1989, Keith LaMar (aka Bomani Shakur) was sent to prison at age 19 for murder. He had been living in Cleveland, Ohio, where he sold drugs as a means of survival in the Crack-infested streets he knew as home. On a day that would forever change his life, Keith was robbed at gunpoint and exchanged gunfire with his robbers. He was shot twice in his legs and hit one of the other men in the chest. That young man, one a childhood friend, died. Keith pled guilty and was sent to prison for 18 years-to-life. Four years later, Keith was attempting to put together the broken pieces of his life at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, hoping for another chance at life. It was an Easter Sunday, and the weather had just turned warmer; Keith and about 400 other men were outside exercising in the rec-yard when commotion broke out inside and it became clear that some type of protest was underway. Keith made a quick decision to slip inside for a few minutes to secure his personal belongings (since his cell assignment was in the area being taken over). Once back out in the yard, he and the others waited to see what would transpire, watching as the bodies of several men were dumped onto the yard. As Easter came to an end, the Ohio State Highway Patrol rounded up those on the yard and secured them into another part of the facility. Prison records prove that Keith was among them. Though no one could have predicted what exactly was happening, or how it would all result, an 11-day siege ensued. In the end, nine inmates and one guard ultimately lost their lives. When the dust began to settle, the State of Ohio needed someone on whom to pin several of the early inmate deaths. This is where Keith's troubles began… A few months later, several prisoners were enticed with the promise of early paroles and/or dropped charges if only they would come up with a reasonable story to help the State sweep up the “mess” at their out-of-control prison. They determined Keith would be the fall guy, and they pointed their fingers at him. Thus, to make it all come together convincingly, the prosecution withheld actual confessions from his defense, as well as eyewitness statements that contradicted their fabricated version of events. In spite of zero DNA or forensic evidence, they moved forward with their accusations against Keith. In fact, they made sure his trial would be racially biased in their favor by calling for the removal of the few potential black jurors, and by holding his trial in an all-white county in southern Ohio. In spite of having no motive to kill anyone, no actual proof connecting him, nor any affiliation with any of the groups organizing the uprising, the jury didn't take long to find Keith LaMar guilty of the murder of five of the inmates. He was sentenced to death. Albert Marquès is a pianist, composer, and political activist from a working class, industrial town outside of Barcelona, where he worked in factories through school. A member of a Catalan anti-capitalist organization as a teenager, he narrowly escaped being detained for his activism. Influenced by the local punk scene, as well as jazz recordings of musicians like Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Michel Camilo and Herbie Hancock, he was self-taught until he attended Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. After graduation, he made two pivotal trips which changed his life, spending a month in the West Bank in Palestine and a month in Cuba. During his four years in Barcelona, he played with the best musicians of the scene, such as Marc Miralta, thanks to his unique, non-academic sound. Upon graduating, he moved to Paris, where he worked in a McDonald's until he learned French. In Paris, he played with musicians such as Remi Vignolo and Pierre Perchaud, and became the pianist in African American drummer Leon Parker's quartet. At 25, Albert moved to New York City, without knowing even one person, to play jazz. After a year and a half working as a waiter and going to jam sessions every night, he met his mentor Arturo O'Farrill, who gave him his own baby grand piano. In addition to his musical influence and encouragement, O'Farrill hired him to teach with his organization, the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, a non-profit that gives free Latin jazz music lessons in the most disadvantaged New York City public schools. Albert also plays and collaborates with his sons, Adam and Zack O'Farrill. In 2014, he married the sculptor Mia Pearlman, with whom he has two children, Aviva and Sol. It is in New York that he finally combined his biggest influences: contemporary jazz, flamenco, Afro Cuban music and social justice by creating Freedom First. He has recorded four albums as a band leader, and regularly collaborates with rhythm master Ari Hoenig, Spanish flamenco singer and saxophonist Antonio Lizana, and other American and European musicians. ​Marques is the Music Director at the Institute for Collaborative Education in NY, a progressive, public middle and high school in downtown Manhattan.

Meet Pascal :) What a treat it has been to welcome this man into my life Not only did he give me confidence and skills to play the piano for the first time in my life, he toiled to transcribe my vocal multitracks and save them from dying on the hard drive. He sat with me and the recording crew in the studio for 5 hours to assist our cellist as this same song took shape With patience and encouragement that's very rare and deeply contagious.  Speaking my language just as fluently as the classic players He's been the bridge to many lands This new LP - Places of Unknowing that's OUT July 18th 2025  Would not have existed without Pascal. It's as simple as that.    He set the ball rolling and helped me so so much along the way.  I was watching the live show footage last night.  The concert of the record that was performed in Nashville March 2025 with a wonderful group of musicians. Some of them were professional like Rob Burger, Ethan Jodziewicz and Lee Vinson but many students joined from Blair college of music. Pascal was working at the school at the time and drummed up interest, found us a room to practice in and kept it all together with so little time.  He not only found all these great players but he then remade arrangements from the album for woodwind  Beautiful arrangements.  I was in tears last night. Just thinking of that night and all the time leading up to it  It took so long and so much energy to pull it together.  Life has moved from that time and now Pascal is leaving to MIT in Boston with his wife and kids I couldn't be happier for them !!! I mean come on. MIT!!!  He really is one of the most inspiring people I've met and I'm so happy to get to share this pod and the window it opens to his world.  With one grammy under his belt already, watch out for him  This will not be the last time you hear about Pascal.  He's the real deal.
