AI-labor saving tool or existential threat? On his new recording Server Farm, saxophonist and composer Jon Irabagon contemplates the potential threat and promise of this omni-present technology. For this recording Irabagon augments his regular quartet consisting of keyboardist Matt Mitchell, bassist Chris Lightcap, and percussionist Dan Weiss with violinist and vocalist Mazz Smith, trumpeter Peter Evans, guitarists Miles Okazaki and Wendy Eisenberg, bassist Michael Formanek, and percussionist and electronic musician Levy Lorenzo. Imitating AI, Jon spent several years doing a deep dive into the musical output of his collaborators, mining their entire catalogues for ideas that create the foundation of the music on this exciting recording.

After several decades of creating music in a manner that was beginning to feel routine, guitarist Miles Okazaki was searching for a fresh way to make music. He examined the processes of artists Ed Ruscha, Sol Lewitt, and Ken Price as templates for creating. In possession of these new ideas gleaned from these artists, he went into the studio with a group of musicians that were given prompts which were recorded and formed into what Miles refers to as musical “slabs.” These “slabs” were then sanded, polished, and sculpted, and the result is Miniture America, which Okazaki describes as a sonic treasure hunt, a collection of 22 vignettes exploring the wonder of chance encounters and “found” compositions.
On this episode, Joel Harrison speaks with guitarist Miles Okazaki about rhythmic cycles and his studies in South Indian drumming. Jazz Port Townsend was back on a limited scale the last week of July after a year's hiatus due to Covid-19 restrictions last year. The Jazz Workshop was virtual, and there were two outdoor concerts by the jazz faculty on Saturday afternoon. For these concerts, the large doors of the McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden were open with the musicians on stage and the audience of several hundred was seated on the grass outside on Littlefield Green to allow for social distancing. There were two sets with essentially the same instrumentation but different personnel. In the first set to be broadcast this Sunday, the musicians include René Marie, vocal, Dick Oatts, alto sax, Terell Stafford, trumpet, Wycliffe Gordon, trombone & vocal, Miles Okazaki, guitar, Dawn Clement, piano, Marion Hayden, bass, and Carl Allen, drums. Jazz Port Towsend Artistic Director John Clayton also plays bass on several songs. Thanks to all the musicians, John Clayton, Centrum's Jazz Program Manager Gregg Miller, and

One of music's leading jazz saxophonists Miguel Zenón joins Tim talk about his journey in music and life. Miguel has been nominated multiple times for Grammy Awards and has carved a place for himself among the elite jazz saxophonists and composers of our time. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Miguel_Zenon_II_auphonic.mp3 Miguel was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In high school, he found himself listening to the sounds of John Coltrane, but at that point, it was just an interest, not yet a passion. He didn't get serious about actually making a career in jazz until he went to college at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. That's where he met drummer Bob Moses, who asked him to join him with the Either/Orchestra. This gave Miguel his first taste of professional experience as a saxophonist. He would later earn awards and grants that allowed Miguel to continue his education, earning a master's degree in 2001 from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Miles Okazaki has a special relationship with the music of jazz pianist/composer Thelonious Monk. When he decided to record his own collection of Monk compositions, he didn't merely select a few tunes: He tackled every known piece the composer ever wrote. Como compositor, ha sido comisionado por SFJAZZ, The New York State Council for the Arts, Chamber Music America, NYO JAZZ, The Logan Center for The Arts, The Hyde Park Jazz Festival, The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, MIT, Jazz Reach, Peak Performance, PRISM Quartet y muchos de sus compañeros.Zenón ha aparecido en artículos en publicaciones como The New York Times , The Wall Street Journal , The Los Angeles Times , The Chicago Tribune , Bloomberg Pursuits, Jazz Times , Jazziz , Boston Globe , Billboard, Jazz Inside, Newsday y Details . “The artistic thing needs to happen. Along with being great parents we just can’t live any other way. I can’t live any other way.” Dan Weiss is a musician from Brooklyn, NYC who is a drummer, tabla player, and composer. He leads his projects Starebaby, his jazz trio, Fourth Floor, and collaborations with Ari Hoenig and Miles Okazaki. As well as being a sideman in very high demand, he is also a bandleader and composer. He composes through piano, electric bass, and drum set to create these incredibly moody, complex, rich and compelling works that have a distinct presence to them. Dan also studies tabla with Samir Chatterjee. This study with Samir has been going on for over twenty years. In this interview, you will hear Dan’s complete and total honesty. Dan provided an analysis based on his answers in this interview. The results were, Honesty = 98.9% Answers on the whole = 87.3% You Will Hear About…. Dan’s creative process with composing and some details on the new Starebaby record. Dan’s discusses the book You Are Not Your Brain and how he has benefited from this book. How Dan's Guru, Samir Chatterjee, teaches him by example. How Dan adapted to being a father and what he has learned from his daughter. If Dan ever thinks about the future state of the world. If we as adults lose the child-like "specialness" of life. Practicing in your mind vs on the drums. Why Should You Listen? I am usually very satisfied with these podcast episodes that I create. But sometimes when they are finished, I have an incredible feeling of connectivity to the work. It is remarkable how much Dan and I related to each other in this one. There was a great sense of honesty, openness and human rawness in this conversation. Dan and I cover a lot of deep topics that apply directly to the artist’s mind and heart. How do we know when our work is done or if it is any good? How do we obsess over detail, without it suffocating us in the process? These are some of the questions raised in this one. I recommend listening deeply and focused with this one to get the full effect. As jazz was born where cultures converged, it's not a surprise that it is the most adaptable form of music. An art form permeable since its very inception to musical traditions from other continents. This week we focus on the contribution of musicians that approached jazz and improvised music benefiting from the wider perspective afforded to them by the exposure to not only American culture but also the traditions of the places of origin of their families, which hailed from Asian countries like China, India, Iraq, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam. The playlist features Susie Ibarra, Cuong Vu, Ben Kono, Amir ElSaffar, Fred Ho, Amirtha Kidambi, Edge, Peggy Chew, Rajna Swaminathan, Brooklyn Raga Massive, Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Rez Abbasi, Jon Jang, Jen Shyu, Tomas Fujiwara, Taylor Ho Bynum, Jon Irabagon, Miles Okazaki, Ha-Yang Kim. Thelonious Monk once said "play what you want and let the public pick up on what you are doing even if it does take them 15, 20 years". Luckily, he lived long enough to become fully embraced and celebrated before his passing. However, it's after his death that his music has really become central to the jazz canon. To mark the thirty-seventh anniversary of his demise, on 17 February 1982, this week we feature a very diverse range of renditions of his masterpieces. The playlist includes Cootie Williams, Paul Motian, Carmen McRae, Georg Gräwe, Duck Baker, Allen Toussaint, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall, Gianluca Petrella, Lindsey Horner, Brad Mehldau, Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, Gary Thomas, Quincy Jones, Miles Okazaki, Frank Kimbrough, Thomas Chapin, Ran Blake, Jeanne Lee, Tronzo Trio, Steve Lacy, Charlie Rouse, Barry Harris, Ernst Reijseger, Thelonious Monk.
