Greetings All You Young Jazz Lovers! Another episode of the best damn Jazz music podcast on the internet has dropped, and this episode has drawn its inspiration from the world of film. A cinema masterpiece entitled "Sinners" hit theaters back in April of this year and ever since I can't seem to quench my desire for the blues (I also avoid the sunlight...strange). It's as if I have been seduced and placed under a spell! I wonder, is there such a thing as a Blues Vampire? If so...one must have bit me when I attended the Keb' Mo - Taj Mahal concert in June. Well, in any case... here it is y'all a bit of that voodoo that the Blues do so well. Enjoy! Brian "Katzpheno" Phoenix featuring: Abbey Lincoln - The Music Is The Magic (2007) Mike Stern - Coupe De Ville (2009) Warren Wolf - Frankie & Johnny (2013) Herlin Riley - Wang, Dang, Doodle (2019) Charlie Hunter - We Don't Nobody Nobody Sent ( 2016) Jimmy Greene - No Words (2020) Randy Crawford & Joe Sample - Everyday I Have The Blues (2012) Charlie Haden, Paul Motain & Geri Allen - Blues In Motain (1987) Billy Cobham - Red Baron (1973) Allen Toussaint - Singin' The Blues (2009) Mack Avenue Superband - Test Of Time (2015) Joe Williams & Marlena Shaw - Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby (1989)
Del segundo disco del cantante, compositor y guitarrista carioca Zé Ibarra, 'Afim', las canciones 'Infinito em nós', 'Segredo', 'Da menor importância', 'Morena' y 'Essa confusão'. El pianista Giovanni Ceccarelli y el bajista Ferruccio Spinetti firman 'Le grand Michel', disco homenaje a Michel Legrand, con canciones como 'The summer knows', 'The windmills of your mind' -con la voz de Cristina Renzetti- o 'What are you doing the rest of your life?' -con la voz de Camille Bertault-. Michelle Coltrane and Maggie LePique discuss her Mother, Alice Coltrane and the year-long celebration currently underway that's being called “The Year of Alice.”This celebration spans 2024-2025 and features previously unreleased music and reissues, brand new community programming, a multimedia museum exhibit, specially curated concerts, newly choreographed ballet works and much more.Jazz musician, composer, bandleader and spiritual and devotional leader, Alice Coltrane was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1937 to Solon and Annie McLeod, the fifth of six children. By the age of nine, she played organ during services at Mount Olive Baptist church. In the early 60's she began playing jazz as a professional in Detroit with her own trio and as a duo with vibist Terry Pollard.Alice Coltrane would go on to collaborate and performed with Kenny Clarke, Kenny Burrell, Ornette Coleman, Pharaoh Sanders, Charlie Haden, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJonette, Carlos Santana and more.Mrs Coltrane's interest in gospel, classical, and jazz music led to the creation of her own innovative style. Her proficiency on keyboard, organ, and harp was remarkable and her artistry matured into amazing arrangements and compositions. Her twenty recordings cover a time span from Monastic Trio (1968) to Translinear Light (2004).Michelle discusses at length one of the events here in Southern California that is part of the Year of Alice. Here in L.A. the exhibition Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal at the Hammer Museum in Westwood is inspired by the life and legacy of jazz musician, composer and bandleader as well a spiritual and devotional leader, Alice Coltrane. This exhibition is part of a larger initiative called “The Year of Alice," and in partnership with the John & Alice Coltrane Home, Impulse Records, The New York Historical Society, the Detroit Jazz Festival and more. The exhibition presents works by contemporary American artists paired with items Coltrane's personal archive and features a range of mediums including video, performance, and sculpture together with Coltrane's archival hand-written correspondence, unreleased audio recordings, and rarely seen video footage.Upcoming event with Michelle Coltrane:Sai Anantam Devotional EnsemblePresented by CAP UCLA and Hammer MuseumSun, Apr 13, 2025 at 6:30pm The NimoyThe Year of Alice events include:Reissues of Alice Coltrane's albums and previously unreleased musicSpecially curated concerts in cities including New York, Brooklyn, Detroit, and CaliforniaA multimedia museum exhibitNewly choreographed dance worksCommunity programming and an Oral History ProjectDiscussions about Coltrane's life and workPartners in the celebration are:Impulse! New York-based drummer and educator Matt Wilson has performed with and/or played on many recordings by other musicians - Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, among others - and leads ensembles of his own, but at this time of year, the thing he might be best known for is his Christmas Tree-O. And yes, he went there – putting a pun right in the band's name. The trio, featuring multi-reed player Jeff Lederer and bassist Paul Sikivie, takes holiday tunes as a whimsical jumping off point for a variety of jazz styles, from swing to free improv. They have a new album called Tree Jazz – The Shape Of Christmas To Come, and they're here to play their gleeful, irreverent, and sometimes nerdy takes on music of the season, in-studio. Set list: 1. Up on the Rooftop 2. Good King Wenceslas 3. Shine Your Light

In the first of two special episodes with esteemed and newly decorated composers, we sit down with Gavin Bryars, a composer who has led the way in innovation over a long and distinguished career. On Tuesday 12th November he received the Innovation Award in association with the Musicians Union at the Ivors Composers Awards, and we were lucky to get a chance to talk to him about this just a few days before. We discuss his early days of art college, double bass and free jazz, his early iconic pieces The Sinking Of The Titanic and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet and his creative relationship with Brian Eno. Over his career he has written five operas, twenty ballets and a long list of instrumental, orchestral and vocal works. He has collaborated with many non-classical musicians over the years, including Tom Waits, Father John Misty, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Natalie Merchant, Iarla O'Lionaird, Gavin Friday, Bertrand Belin and Mocke, and with many visual artists such as Bruce McLean, David Ward, Tim Head, James Hugonin, Bill Woodrow, Will Alsop, the Quay brothers, Juan Muñoz and Massimo Bartolini. He divides his time between a Leicestershire village and Vancouver Island, and we discuss his approach to writing in various locations, and in particular the importance of just the right pencil for the job. There really is a lot of time spent talking about this particular pencil.Gavin talks about the formative time he had working as the house bassist as Greasbrough Working Men's Club, performing in the backing band for Bob Monkhouse, Dusty Springfield and many others. The documentary he mentions is available to watch here: MEMORIES OF GREASBROUGH WORKING MEN'S CLUBFor more on Gavin Bryars, visit www.gavinbryars.comFor more on the Ivors Classical Awards 2024 visit https://ivorsacademy.com/awards/the-ivors-classical-awards/Big thanks to Premier for setting up the interview. You can find us on the socials here;Instagram @threeinabarpodTiktok @threeinabarpodThree In A Bar on YoutubeAnything you'd like to share with us? Dobro master Rob Ickes joins me on the show this week. Rob was kind enough to drop in to the Henhouse to hang for a while, talk and even play a little bit. Rob is one of those players that is so good on one particular instrument that he's managed to carve out a really impressive career being dedicated to just one thing. And that one thing is the dobro, which is kind of a specific instrument - It's somewhat married to bluegrass music, but a very few players, and that list includes Rob and Jerry Douglas (and maybe one or two others), have managed to bring it to wider audiences through sessions and performances outside of that genre, while maintaining their standing at the highest level within it. Rob grew up in California, but moved to Nashville in the early 90's and really established himself as a pre-eminent player with a long stint in the acclaimed bluegrass band Blue Highway. He left the band in 2015 to focus on his duo with the incredible singer and guitarist Trey Hensley, who was on this show a couple of years ago. Rob's impressive session history includes working with artists like Merle Haggard, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Charlie Haden, Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, Little Feat, Patty Loveless and many more. And while the session world keeps calling, Rob has never wanted to solely become a studio player, so he keeps busy on the road as much as he can, and the duo with Trey is incredibly busy now. Their latest release as Rob and Trey is called “Living In A Song”. On top of all that, Rob continues to teach and run his successful “Resosummit” each year here in Nashville. You can get info on all of Rob's activities as well as his tour dates with Trey Hensley over at robickes.com - Enjoy my conversation with Rob Ickes! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon.
