Send a textMusician, songwriter, producer, engineer and ethnomusicologist Alan Williams (solo, Birdsong at Morning, Knots and Crosses) joins Al to talk about Carla Bley and Paul Haines' 1971 album Escalator over the Hill. Alan discusses why he decided to explore EOTH during his high school years, what his favorite parts of the album are, why it has stuck with him over the years and how much he actually likes the album. Alan explores the challenges the album presents to the genrefication of music and talks about several of the artists involved, including Linda Ronstadt, Jack Bruce and Charlie Haden. Antonio Sanchez has become one of the most sought-after drummers in the international jazz scene. Following 18 years and 9 albums as one of the most revered collaborators with guitarist/composer Pat Metheny, he also has recorded and performed with many other most prominent artists like Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden and Toots Thielemans. In 2014 Sanchez popularity soared when he scored Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman which ended up winning 4 Academy awards (including best picture) and for which Antonio won a Grammy award. Listen to a conversation with the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and bandleader, Ricky Skaggs. Born in Kentucky in 1954, Skaggs has played a central role in shaping modern bluegrass and country music. A child prodigy, he first performed on stage with Bill Monroe at age six, and at age seven he appeared on national television with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.  Before turning 18, Skaggs had already performed with many of the greatest legends in bluegrass. At age 15, he and his childhood friend Keith Whitley joined Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys. In the 1970s, Skaggs' musicianship helped redefine progressive bluegrass through his work with the Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe & the New South, and Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. He launched his solo career in the early 1980s and became a leading figure in the neotraditional country movement. His string of #1 hits — including “Crying My Heart Out Over You,” “Highway 40 Blues,” and “Heartbroke” — made him one of the decade's most influential artists. During this period he earned multiple CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 1985, as well as several Grammy Awards. In the 1990s, Skaggs returned his focus to bluegrass, forming his acclaimed band Kentucky Thunder. In 2018, Skaggs was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame—one of the few artists to receive both honors. He is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Skaggs has performed and recorded with a wide range of legendary artists across many genres, including Jack White, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Charlie Haden, Bruce Hornsby, Béla Fleck, John Fogerty, and Dionne Warwick, among many others. Across his decades-long career, Ricky Skaggs' contributions as a singer, mandolinist, fiddler, bandleader, and tradition-bearer have secured his legacy as one of the most important figures in American roots music. Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder will present a special Christmas concert at the Brown County Music Center on December 11.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a Grammy-winning Cuban pianist and composer celebrated as one of the most innovative voices in modern jazz. He'll be performing at Indy Jazz Fest on September 19. Born in Havana in 1963 to a musical family, Rubalcaba was classically trained before emerging as a prodigy of the city's vibrant jazz scene. His virtuosic technique quickly drew international attention, leading to collaborations with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, and Herbie Hancock. Michelle Coltrane and Maggie LePique discuss her Mother, Alice Coltrane and the year-long celebration currently underway that's being called “The Year of Alice.”This celebration spans 2024-2025 and features previously unreleased music and reissues, brand new community programming, a multimedia museum exhibit, specially curated concerts, newly choreographed ballet works and much more.Jazz musician, composer, bandleader and spiritual and devotional leader, Alice Coltrane was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1937 to Solon and Annie McLeod, the fifth of six children. By the age of nine, she played organ during services at Mount Olive Baptist church.In the early 60's she began playing jazz as a professional in Detroit with her own trio and as a duo with vibist Terry Pollard.Alice Coltrane would go on to collaborate and performed with Kenny Clarke, Kenny Burrell, Ornette Coleman, Pharaoh Sanders, Charlie Haden, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJonette, Carlos Santana and more.Mrs Coltrane's interest in gospel, classical, and jazz music led to the creation of her own innovative style. New York-based drummer and educator Matt Wilson has performed with and/or played on many recordings by other musicians - Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, among others - and leads ensembles of his own, but at this time of year, the thing he might be best known for is his Christmas Tree-O. Dobro master Rob Ickes joins me on the show this week. Rob was kind enough to drop in to the Henhouse to hang for a while, talk and even play a little bit. Rob is one of those players that is so good on one particular instrument that he's managed to carve out a really impressive career being dedicated to just one thing. And that one thing is the dobro, which is kind of a specific instrument - It's somewhat married to bluegrass music, but a very few players, and that list includes Rob and Jerry Douglas (and maybe one or two others), have managed to bring it to wider audiences through sessions and performances outside of that genre, while maintaining their standing at the highest level within it. Rob grew up in California, but moved to Nashville in the early 90's and really established himself as a pre-eminent player with a long stint in the acclaimed bluegrass band Blue Highway. He left the band in 2015 to focus on his duo with the incredible singer and guitarist Trey Hensley, who was on this show a couple of years ago. Rob's impressive session history includes working with artists like Merle Haggard, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Charlie Haden, Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, Little Feat, Patty Loveless and many more. And while the session world keeps calling, Rob has never wanted to solely become a studio player, so he keeps busy on the road as much as he can, and the duo with Trey is incredibly busy now. Their latest release as Rob and Trey is called “Living In A Song”.
