Welcome to the Blink Friction Arts Podcast and the Music Crazy Robots.Today we are holding the Low End: exploring Renowned Female Double Bass Players Who Changed the GameWhen we think of double bass players, it's easy to conjure images of towering instruments, smoky jazz clubs, and the deep rumble of classical orchestras. But while the double bass has long been considered a male-dominated instrument—perhaps due to its sheer size and physicality—women have not only held their own but reshaped the narrative in profound and inspiring ways. Here's a celebration of some of the most renowned female double bass players, spanning genres from classical to jazz, who continue to break boundaries and make their mark.1. Esperanza SpaldingIf there's a modern icon of bass brilliance, it's Esperanza Spalding. A musical prodigy, Spalding plays both double bass and electric bass with virtuosic ease, weaving jazz, fusion, classical, and soul into a genre-defying tapestry. She made headlines in 2011 by winning the Grammy for Best New Artist—an award rarely given to jazz musicians. With a string of critically acclaimed albums and boundary-pushing live performances, Spalding's influence reaches far beyond the bass community. She's also a professor at Harvard, emphasizing innovation in music and performance.2. Chi-chi NwanokuBritish-born Chi-chi Nwanoku is a trailblazer in the classical music world. As the founder of the Chineke! Orchestra—the first professional orchestra in Europe made up of majority Black and ethnically diverse musicians—she has made it her mission to open doors in a traditionally exclusionary space. A formidable double bassist in her own right, Chi-chi was a principal bassist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for over 30 years. Her career blends musical excellence with social justice, making her a vital voice in contemporary classical music.3. Linda May Han OhHailing from Australia and now based in New York, Linda May Han Oh has become one of the most in-demand jazz bassists of her generation. Whether leading her own projects or playing with legends like Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, or Vijay Iyer, Oh brings a deep musicality and sharp improvisational mind to every performance. Her tone is warm, articulate, and commanding, with an emotional range that speaks volumes. She also teaches at the Berklee College of Music and the New School, nurturing the next wave of bass talent.4. Kristin KorbA rare mix of bassist and vocalist, Kristin Korb blends bebop agility with a velvet voice. Originally from the U.S. and now based in Denmark, Korb carries forward the tradition of singing bassists (think Ray Brown or Slam Stewart) but with a distinctively elegant and lyrical touch. Her interpretations of jazz standards are joyful, inventive, and rhythmically tight, making her performances feel both timeless and fresh.5. Caroline EmeryFor lovers of classical double bass pedagogy, Caroline Emery is a key figure. A professor at the Royal College of Music in London, Emery has trained a generation of outstanding bassists, many of whom now play in top orchestras worldwide. She's known for her work with young musicians and her emphasis on posture, breath, and physical awareness—an essential contribution to transforming how double bass is taught and performed.6. Jennifer LeithamJennifer Leitham, a veteran of the jazz scene and an accomplished composer, performer, and educator, is best known for her work with the likes of Mel Tormé and Doc Severinsen. Her playing is powerful and deeply rooted in jazz tradition, but she's also known for pushing the envelope both musically and personally. As a transgender woman in jazz, Leitham has been an advocate for visibility and acceptance in the music world, proving that artistry and authenticity go hand in hand.7. Amy DominguesClassically trained yet artistically adventurous, Amy Domingues has explored everything from Baroque continuo playing to post-rock collaborations and experimental sound art. Based in Washington, D.C., she's a cellist and double bassist with a unique voice. Her work highlights the double bass's capacity for subtlety, beauty, and textural depth across genres. Why Representation MattersThe double bass may be one of the largest and most physically imposing instruments in the orchestra or on the bandstand, but these women show that passion, skill, and vision aren't confined by size or stereotype. They've not only expanded what's possible on the instrument—they've redefined who gets to play it.Whether you're a student, a listener, or a player yourself, exploring the work of these bassists is a powerful reminder of music's capacity to evolve—and to include.Want to dive deeper? Check out performances by these players on YouTube, explore their discographies on streaming platforms, and follow their latest work on social media. And if you're learning bass yourself—take heart: these legends prove that the possibilities are endless.Follow the music crazy team on YouTub @taletellerclub

This is the WORLD PREMIERE of “THE RICH ONES ALL STARS”, the new extended version of my recent single, “The Rich Ones”. The new version features me and my band, Project Grand Slam, along with 8 World Class musicians who previously have been guests on this podcast. Here's the back story.A few months ago I released a single, “The Rich Ones”, featuring Randy Brecker of Blood Sweat & Tears fame on flugelhorn. The single was very popular, and I decided to do something a bit daring and different. I've had many World Class musicians as guests on the podcast. So I asked several of them if they would record a new solo for the track and I would release a new, extended version of the tune. I'm pleased to say that everyone who I asked agreed. The new version, “The Rich Ones All Stars”, features the following musicians in this order.BILLY COBHAM of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame, recorded a new drum track for the tune. Billy is one of the most revered drummers of all time.I kept RANDY BRECKER'S flugelhorn solo from the original version of the tune because it's just so darn good.JOHN HELLIWELL was the saxophonist in Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. John contributed a fantastic sax solo to the piece.PAT COIL is an acclaimed jazz pianist who has performed with Michael McDonald, Carmen McRae and many others. He added a sublime piano solo.PETER TIEHUIS is the heralded Dutch guitarist who performs with the Metropole Orkest. He contributed a wonderful guitar solo.ANTONIO FARAO is the extraordinary Italian jazz keyboard player who has performed with Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette among others. Antonio contributed a smokin' Fender Rhodes keyboard solo.ELLIOTT RANDALL is the incredible guitarist who gave the world the unforgettable solo on Steely Dan's “Reelin' In The Years”. Elliott gave me a classic guitar solo for the new track. And last, but certainly not least, is DAVID AMRAM, who is, simply put, a National Treasure at 96 years young. He was Leonard Bernstein's first composer in residence for the New York Philharmonic and also the composer for Shakespeare In The Park among many other accomplishments. David contributed a stunning Pennywhistle solo for the track. So there it is. 8 World Class musicians who have contributed their talent to this project.TO WATCH THE OFFICIAL VIDEO CLICK HERETO LISTEN AND STREAM THE TRACK AND FOR ALL LINKS CLICK HERE---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. To subscribe to the podcast click here .To subscribe to our weekly Follow Your Dream Podcast email click here.To Rate and Review the podcast click here.“Dream With Robert”. The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark.  Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Ed Neumeister, commercial and jazz trombonist from Oakland, California. About Ed: As a trombonist, composer-arranger and bandleader, Ed Neumeister is a musician's musician. Saxophone star Joe Lovano has valued Neumeister as a colleague for some four decades, praising him as a conductor of “infectious flair” as well as “a soloist of deep expressive passion.” Another renowned saxophonist, Dave Leibman, simply dubbed him “one of the best trombonists in the business.” Neumeister has five decades of experience on both sides of the Atlantic as an artist and an educator. Raised in the Bay Area, he was professional musician by his mid-teens. He backed such iconic vocal stars as Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan there, performed in various symphony orchestras, and collaborated with Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia as well as such jazz notables as Jerry Granelli. Moving to New York City in 1980, Neumeister worked in the Duke Ellington Orchestra as both player and arranger for 15 years; he was simultaneously playing in the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, earning a Grammy nomination in 1992 for his arrangement of “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.” In 2000, Neumeister moved to Austria to serve as a professor for 17 years at the University of Music in Graz. He wrote for various jazz bands while in Europe and performed extensively, along with composing classical chamber pieces and largescale concert works. Following a stint scoring films in Los Angeles, Neumeister returned to the New York area where he has been active as an educator, currently teaching at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School, New York University and City College of New York, as well as William Paterson University in New Jersey. As a leader, Neumeister has recorded nine albums, ranging from large ensembles to small groups to solo trombone. He has released many of them via his own label, MeisteroMusic, including his latest: 3 for the Road, presenting his trio with vocalist Jay Clayton and the late pianist Fritz Pauer. The current version of that trio includes Gary Versace on piano. Another Neumeister gem is Suite Ellington, an album showcasing his arrangements for an all-star sextet of works by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn; recorded in 2010 for Austrian Radio, Suite Ellington was hailed by Jazz Weekly as “a great tribute and intro to the world of Ellingtonia.” Neumeister's new working small band is a New York quartet featuring the trombonist alongside Versace, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey.

Lawrence Fields, born and bred in St. Louis, has earned a spot at the forefront of young jazz pianists, thanks to his blending of vintage ideals with a contemporary mindset. For the last five years, in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019, Downbeat Magazine has placed him close to the top of the keyboardist category in their “Rising Stars” critics poll. Fields showcase his dynamic blend of composition and playing in his trio and quartet, and his music is currently being featured internationally. His debut album featuring his trio and solo playing, “To the Surface”, was released to critical acclaim on February 2, 2024. Veteran saxophone icon Joe Lovano – with his unerring ear for youthful talent – has become one of the pianist's biggest fans. Fields is a member of several bands led or co-led by Lovano: his Classic Quartet (originally featuring Lewis Nash and George Mraz in the rhythm section); the Sax Supreme Quartet (with Chris Potter); and his Sound Prints quintet with trumpeter Dave Douglas. The Wall Street Journal praised Fields' “elegant, probing” solos with Sound Prints, while The New York Times noted that he is “integral to the band's plunging, changeable style.” A modern-minded bandleader from the younger generation also relies on Fields, as he mans the piano and keyboards for the Christian Scott Group. Referencing his role on acoustic and electric pianos in the trumpeter's band, NextBop said: “Fields remains a constant lyrical presence on the keys – innovative, expressive, supportive, able to soar like a bird in his solos. He never fails to impress.” Fields has collaborated with Christian Scott on several albums — including co-writing and co-producing 3 songs on the Grammy-nominated The Emancipation Procrastination (Ropeadope, 2017), as part of his work on Christian's Centennial Trilogy with releases Diaspora and Ruler Rebel. He features prominently in the piano and keyboard chairs on Christian's Grammy-nominated live recording Axiom (2020), as well as the Grammy-nominated Ancestral Recall (2019), and the Stretch Music (Ropeadope, 2015) and Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah (Concord, 2012) albums. With Lovano and Douglas, the pianist features on Sound Prints' two critically-acclaimed studio releases: Other Worlds (2021), and Scandal (2018, Greanleaf) — selected by The Guardian as their #1 jazz album of 2018, as well as one of Rolling Stone's top 20 jazz albums of the year. Fields also plays on the live album Sound Prints: Live at Monterey Jazz Festival (Blue Note, 2015), which featured two brand-new compositions written for the ensemble by the legendary Wayne Shorter. He appears on the album Marsalis Music Honors Alvin Batiste (2007) alongside Branford Marsalis, Herlin Riley and Russell Malone, as well as on drummer Terri Lyne Carrington's More to Say (a 2009 disc for which he served as a pianist, keyboardist, and composer-producer). Fields also appears on releases by drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and saxophonists Jaleel Shaw and Steve Slagle. The pianist has been a member of the Watts band, as well as that of trumpeter Nicholas Payton. In addition to performing onstage with the likes of Payton, Watts, Marsalis, and Carrington, Fields has appeared with star bassist Christian McBride, drummer Nate Smith, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, and bassist Robert Hurst, among others. Lawrence's playing is also featured on Christopher North's score for the new Sam Pollard documentary "Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes", which premiered in Fall 2023 on PBS' American Masters television series.
