  Today we're getting to know the brass family — the loud, bright, fun-loving cousins of the orchestra. (And yes, I'm a little biased here, since my daughter plays trumpet. There's just something about the sound of a room full of brass players warming up.) We talk about what actually makes an instrument "brass" (hint: it's not the metal), why the trombone is the odd one out with its slide instead of valves, and how each member of the family got its personality — from the bold, attention-grabbing trumpet to the tuba, the gentle giant holding everything up from underneath. You'll also hear a callback to Peter and the Wolf, where the French horn plays the wolf, and a little detour into our family's long love affair with Trombone Shorty (we've driven hours more than once just to hear him play). They also discussed Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman's monster three-homer game to lead the Cubs to a 12-6 win over the Nationals on Wednesday and praised White Sox right-hander Luis Castillo's gem in his club's 5-0 victory against the Reds. Later, they conducted the Pick 6 segment, where they debated the top sports stories of the day.

Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger has spent more than four decades redefining what is possible on his instrument, inspiring composers to create a remarkable new body of repertoire along the way. In Sydney to conduct and perform with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Håkan discusses HK Gruber's Aerial Trumpet Concerto, one of many works written especially for him, and the extraordinary techniques and sounds Gruber drew from both player and instrument. He reflects on his collaborations with composers including Mark-Anthony Turnage and Brett Dean, his determination to give the trumpet the kind of substantial repertoire enjoyed by other instruments, and why the spontaneity and risk-taking of jazz remain an important influence on his approach to classical music.Håkan also looks back on the unlikely Christmas present that changed his life at the age of eight, leaving Sweden for Paris at just sixteen, and the very different teachers who shaped him as a musician. He recalls the competitions and recordings that helped establish his international career, explains why a lifetime is still not enough to master the trumpet, and reveals why conducting remains for him a “luxury hobby”. Håkan Hardenberger conducts members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for Modern Masterpieces for Brass from 6-8 August, and then performs with the SSO for HK Gruber's Aerial Trumpet Concerto from 12-15 August.

The meaning of mitigate is straightforward enough: to make something—such as a problem, symptom, or punishment—less harsh or severe. Sometimes, however, mitigate appears where the similar-looking militate is expected. That word, which is often followed by against, means “to have weight or effect,” as in “your unexcused absences are likely to militate against your getting a promotion.” The two words are not closely related (mitigate comes from the Latin verb mitigare, meaning “to soften,” whereas militate traces to militare, meaning “to engage in warfare”), but confusion between the two has existed for long enough that some language experts accept “mitigate against” as an idiomatic alternative to militate. The band's music quickly became ubiquitous, soundtracking everything from commercial jingles and game shows to house parties. Interestingly, while framed as a band, many of their early albums were secretly recorded by the legendary LA session musician unit The Wrecking Crew. I don't like to use the word etiquette as that implies rules and we should be able to fish however we want as long as it's legal. But there are traditions and guidelines for conduct on trout rivers that ensures that everyone has a good day on the water without infringing on the rights of others. And they do sometimes differ depending on whether you are floating or wading, and even form one river to the next depending on how crowded they are. Todd Tanner [34:22] offers a very thoughtful and interesting approach to this subject with lots of anecdotes on what he has seen on the many trout rivers he's fished in his lifetime. II    Soon after the earth (yahne) was made, men and grasshoppers came to the surface through a long passageway that led from a large cavern, in the interior of the earth, to the summit of a high hill, Nan' chaha. There, deep down in the earth, in the great cavern, man and the grasshoppers had been created by Aba, the Great Spirit, having been formed of the yellow clay.    For a time the men and the grasshoppers continued to reach the surface together, and as they emerged from the long passageway they would scatter in all directions, some going north, others south, east, or west.    But at last the mother of the grasshoppers who had remained in the cavern was killed by the men and as a consequence there were no more grasshoppers to reach the surface, and ever after those that lived on the earth were known to the Choctaw as eske ilay, or 'mother dead.' However, men continued to reach the surface of the earth through the long passageway that led to the summit of Nan' chaha, and, as they moved about from place to place, they trampled upon many grasshoppers in the high grass, killing many and hurting others.    The grasshoppers became alarmed as they feared that all would be killed if men became more numerous and continued to come from the cavern in the earth. They spoke to Aba, who heard them and soon after caused the passageway to be closed and no more men were allowed to reach the surface. But as there were many men remaining in the cavern he changed them to ants and ever since that time the small ants have come forth from holes in the ground. This week in Louisiana history. As I study the Old Testament something comes to me over and over again. When Jesus said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me,” he was sending the people to the Old Testament to find Him. When Lehi opened the Plates of Brass for the first time and searched them from the beginning (see 1 Nephi 5:10) and then he “was filled with the Spirit, and began to prophesy concerning his seed (see 1 Nephi 5:17) he was immersed in the Old Testament. When Nephi says, “For my soul delighteth in the scriptures and my heart pondereth them…” he was talking about the Old Testament. When Ammon, Aaron, Omner and Himni converted seven cities of the Lamanites and brought untold thousands to the Savior, they were using only the Old Testament in their teaching! What a treasure we have in the Old Testament!

God's divine order of the tabernacle intentionally begins with two pieces of brass.
