In this installment of our Payroll Brass Tax podcast series, Mike Mahoney (shareholder, Morristown/New York) and Stephen Kenney (associate, Dallas) discuss the many issues that come into play when determining how to make the final wage payment for a deceased employee. They outline a three-step process for handling these payments: 1) review state and federal laws to determine who is entitled to receive the final paycheck, how much can be paid, and the timing of the payment; 2) obtain the necessary documentation to release the final wages and verify the legal right of the beneficiary or estate representative to receive the payment; and 3) communicate clearly with beneficiaries or estate representatives to ensure they understand the process and requirements for receiving the final wage payment.

In 1995, 15-year-old Kiplyn Davis disappeared in broad daylight from her high school in Spanish Fork, Utah. Her belongings were abandoned in her locker, and she never made it to her afternoon classes. No one has seen her since. Thirty years later, the mystery of what happened to Kiplyn has endured in a community that refuses to forget her. However, as the years have passed, the ties that have bound family and friends together have begun to come undone, and secrets have started to emerge, which begs the question: how long can someone stay quiet when what they've done starts to come into the light? Anyone who has any information that can lead to the discovery of Kiplyn's remains is asked to call the Spanish Fork police department at (801) 798-5070 or (801) 804-4700. We are living in times when we are always looking at other peoples attitudes. Because in this season we have to be pointing that finger at ourselves not other people. I went looking for some gold nail polish yesterday and the shop keeper was trying to help me look she also said while looking that is the colour that goes first everyone wants gold and that is true noone wants brass but if we are honest are we looking for gold in others while we are brass we have to check our attitude towards other people no matter the excuse we may have for our attitudeYahweh wants all is children to be pure gold because he will test us to remove everything that stops us from being who he has called us to be. Send us a textEpisode 014From the groundbreaking Lyricon of the 1970s to today's Roland Aerophone, Tom's distinctive electronic wind sounds have shaped countless recordings across jazz, pop, and film scores for decades. The continuation of our in-depth conversation with this legendary musician reveals fascinating insights about his approach to technology and musicianship. "What would best benefit the music?" Tom asks, explaining that wind controllers have always been just another tool in his arsenal, alongside saxophones and other woodwinds. This pragmatic philosophy has guided his five-decade career, allowing him to bring precisely the right sound to each musical situation.Tom shares colorful stories about watching Michael Brecker perform with the EWI at the Hollywood Bowl, his collaboration with Herb Alpert (who Tom credits with "reintroducing horns back into pop music" in the 1960s), and his ongoing quest to recapture the magic of his original Lyricon sound with modern technology. His description of searching for authentic expression amid endless digital possibilities will resonate with electronic musicians of all stripes. What truly distinguishes Tom's approach is his focus on musical expression rather than technological novelty. As he explains, of the hundreds of available sounds on modern wind controllers, he only cares deeply about the handful that allow him to express himself authentically. This quality-over-quantity philosophy serves as a valuable compass for musicians navigating today's overwhelming array of digital options. The conversation also delves into practical territory, with Tom and hosts Matt and Alistair exchanging tips on customizing Aerophone settings, adjusting key functions, and solving common playability challenges. These technical insights offer immediate value for wind controller players seeking to optimize their instruments.Ready to dive deeper into Tom Scott's world? What do submarines and science fair projects have in common? They both require strategy, patience, and a solid sense of humor. In our latest episode of Homeschool Talks, HSLDA President Jim Mason dives deep (pun fully intended) with Rear Admiral James Waters about being a homeschool father while navigating a high-stakes military career. This episode features: • Why Admiral Waters and his wife chose homeschooling for their kids, even with a life full of relocations and duty stations • What the military taught him about leadership and how those lessons show up at the kitchen table • Real opportunities for homeschool grads in the military (hint: it's more than marching and mess halls) • How military service can open unexpected doors for careers, education, and personal growth Whether you're a homeschool parent, a student weighing post-grad options, or just love a good sea story—this episode delivers insight and inspiration! “I am so grateful that my wife and I chose to homeschool our kids. And I am really excited that there continues to be a flourishing culture of homeschooling. I encourage you to keep the United States Navy in mind. As you're thinking about options—as your children graduate from high school—college is great, but it's not the only choice. The trades, the military—I would keep the military in mind because it can lead to all these other options later in life.”—Rear Admiral James Waters
