Blue and cool is the mood as we spin the dial back to the 1950s — a decade of chrome, tailfins, Cold War tension, Beat poetry, and late-night cigarette smoke curling toward the ceiling of a dimly lit club. Beneath the middle class culture of the day, there was a restless heartbeat of jazz. This was the era when bebop matured into cool, hard bop caught fire, and modal explorations began reshaping the language of improvisation. Artists like Miles Davis refined understatement into revolution, John Coltrane stretched harmony toward spiritual searching, Thelonious Monk bent notes and expectations alike, and Ella Fitzgerald turned the human voice into a virtuosic instrument. Jazz in the '50s wasn't background music — it was conversation, protest, poetry, and possibility. Dave's selected some important landmarks and deep tracks that take you into those dusty digital bins of jazz and improvisation this morning on Deeper Roots.

Thelonious Monk- Underground (Columbia) Released May 1968 Produced by Teo Macero, Underground captures Monk with his longtime quartet: Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone), Larry Gales (bass), and Ben Riley (drums), plus a vocal cameo from Jon Hendricks on “In Walked Bud.” The record balances new compositions like “Green Chimneys” and “Boo Boo's Birthday” with revisited Monk staples, all delivered with the group's seasoned interplay and elastic swing.Though jazz was competing with rock's cultural dominance, Monk remained uncompromising—angular melodies, dissonant harmonies, abrupt silences, and percussive attack intact. The Grammy-winning cover, depicting Monk as a member of the French Resistance, symbolized both defiance and individuality. Artistically rather than commercially driven, Underground closes a defining chapter in Monk's Columbia era and reaffirms his singular place in modern jazz. (S5-Ep7)

Helgi Ingólfsson) Tune in e. Hoy no escucharemos 'versiones'.
Charlie Rouse : profession saxophoniste.

A$AP Rocky's latest album, Don't Be Dumb, is a wild ride through a cacophony of sounds — punk, industrial, drum ‘n' bass, indie rock, and of course, hip hop. But on one track, “Robbery,” he and the rising superstar Doechii sample the world of jazz, specifically Thelonious Monk's 1955 cover of Duke Ellington's “Caravan.” In the process, Rocky and Doechii don't just loop and flow, they create a whole narrative of jazz age victors and villains inspired by the rhythms and harmonies of jazz greats. The result is a song, and album, that makes the case for why hip hop matters more than ever in 2026. A$AP Rocky – ROBBERY (feat. Before Blue Note became a brand and before Impulse! turned jazz into a cosmic mission, there was Prestige Records — raw, loose, experimental, and absolutely electric. Today, I'm joined by Chris Entwisle, authors of Wail: The Art of Prestige Records 1949–1960, a stunning deep dive into the label that captured some of the most vital moments in jazz history — from Miles Davis and John Coltrane to Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and Eric Dolphy. We talk about Prestige's iconic album art, the culture of speed-session recording, the musicians who defined the label's sound, and why Prestige still feels like the most human, gritty, and dangerous chapter in jazz's golden era. If you love jazz history, vinyl culture, or the story behind legendary records, this one's for you.

This week, Kate Molleson explores the life and work of a musical giant – drummer and composer Max Roach – in the company of writer and broadcaster Kevin Le Gendre. Together they trace Roach's extraordinary journey: from his early days at the heart of bebop alongside Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, through his pioneering role as a bandleader, his political activism during the civil rights era, and his later innovations in percussion and collaboration. Roach's story is one of constant reinvention as performer, composer and activist, shaping jazz and beyond for more than half a century.Music includes: Dr Free-Zee (from Max Roach +4) Joy Spring (from Clifford Brown and Max Roach) Bu Dee Daht (from Coleman Hawkins: Rainbow Mist) Salt Peanuts (from Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker: Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945) Ko-Ko (from Charlie Parker: The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes) Bird Gets the Worm (from Charlie Parker: The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes) Move (from Miles Davis: The Complete Birth of the Cool) Cherokee (from Jazz at Massey Hall) Cou Manchi-Cou (from Max Roach Quartet, featuring Hank Mobley) Maximum (from In the Beginning) Daahoud (from Clifford Brown and Max Roach) Sandu (from Study in Brown) Take the A Train (from Study in Brown) Fleurette Africain (from Money Jungle) Driva'man (from We Insist! Jaime Roque follows a lost concert that almost never happened—and the homemade tape that kept it alive. The story begins in 1968 with a teenager who can't get into jazz clubs and decides to bring Thelonious Monk to his public-school auditorium instead. Tickets lag in mostly-white Palo Alto, so he turns to nearby East Palo Alto and invites neighbors who actually know the music. On a rainy Sunday, a school janitor tunes the piano, sets up a reel-to-reel, and hits record. The concert fills. The night is calm. Then the tape disappears into a box for decades. From there, the episode tracks how a forgotten spool becomes a record the world can hear. Jaime visits the GRI at the Getty to see how fragile tapes are assessed, cleaned, and safely played back—how cleaning cloths, aging machines, and careful hands can turn a closet keepsake into public memory. And with a jazz scholar's ear, he listens for why this set matters: the character of Monk's touch that night and how a public-school stage becomes a time capsule.Jaime asks what it takes to keep culture from slipping away—and how one Sunday afternoon can carry forward, beautifully, half a century later.Special thanks to Danny Scher, Dr. Ron McCurdy, Jonathan Furnanski, and Thelonius Monk.

Listen to an hour of music celebrating the legacy of The Bebop Society of Indianapolis. Hear rare recordings from Avenue musicians, including Wes Montgomery, Carl Perkins, David Baker, Pookie Johnson and more. In the early 1940s, a new style of jazz music known as bebop began to emerge. Bebop marked a revolutionary shift in jazz, breaking away from the swing dance music of the 1930s. Bebop was born in after-hours jam sessions at venues like Minton's Playhouse in Harlem. Bebop developed as musicians sought greater artistic freedom and technical challenge. Artists like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk pushed the boundaries of harmony, rhythm and improvisation. They created a style that featured fast tempos with complex melodies and chord progressions. Bebop transformed jazz into a modernist art form that focused on creativity, over commercial appeal. Here in Naptown, the Avenue was the place to hear bebop music. In 1946, Dizzy Gillespie performed at the Avenue's Sunset Terrace nightclub, and in January of 1948 Charlie Parker played there too. 1948 was also the year that a collective of Naptown musicians and music fans, formed The Bebop Society of Indianapolis. At that time, bebop music had not yet gained, widespread acceptance among music fans. The Bebop Society held concerts and lectures to educate the public on the music's importance Their events were not held in nightclubs, the society hosted gatherings in community centers, including, The Senate Avenue YMCA, The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, The Flanner House, and the Crispus Attucks High School auditorium. Guest speakers at the Bebop Soierty's events, included Crispus Attucks' music teacher Norman Merrifield and Jack Tracey, an editor for Down Beat magazine. The Bebop Society also fought against racial segregation at music events. In 1948, members of the Bebop Society desegregated a Stan Kenton concert, at Riverside Park. As headline, in the Indianapolis Recorder stated, “Youth Group Breaks Jim Crow and Attends Concert at Riverside”. The Society also provided scholarships for talented young musicians, including the future Avenue jazz star David Baker. But The Bebop Society's main focus was music, and their concerts featured the greatest jazz musicians in Naptown, including Pookie Johnson, Wes Montgomery, Carl Perkins, Buddy Montgomery, Monk Montgomery, Joe Mitchell, Maceo Hampton, Les “Bear” Taylor, Benny Barth, and Willis Kirk, who served as president of the Society in 1950.
Tory Johnston is an enrolled member of the Quinault Indian Nation and a lecturer in American Indian Studies at the University of Washington. He grew up in the Quinault Indian reservation on the Washington coast with a love for music, whether it was the loud guitar riffs of Metallica or the jazz improvisation of Thelonious Monk. In 2023, with no prior experience as a radio DJ, he applied to work on a new show Seattle radio station KEXP was launching that appealed to his academic and personal explorations of Indigenous music. He got the job and is today the co-host and DJ of “Sounds of Survivance.” Airing on Mondays, each episode exposes listeners to artists spanning musical continents and styles, from classical piano compositions by Navajo musician Connor Chee to thrash metal songs performed by New Zealand band Alien Weaponry in English and Te reo Māori. Johnston spoke with us in January 2025 about the show’s eclectic catalog and to share some highlights from his music playlist.
Like many hip youngsters of my generation, at some point in my twenties I got Jazz-pilled by Beat literature, with writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg name-dropping bop-era musicians like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and many more, sending me to Limewire to download mp3s of 1950s and 1960s Jazz. In recent years, my casual appreciation has turned into a more intense investigation of music history and practice, particularly after discovering “The Grape,” a Jazz club in my neighborhood that's overflowing with colorful characters and musical adventure. My guest today is one of those characters: Monte Montgomery is a multi-instrumentalist, former touring funk guitarist, and all around hip music dude. In this conversation, he shares highlights from his decades in music, from playing funk with a group of Black GIs on a military base in Germany at the age of 17, to entertaining celebrities and insanely rich people on the Beverly Hills philanthropic event circuit, to his current gig holding court on piano, guitar, and drums every Tuesday night at The Grape.
