Tonight's Jazz Feature is the recording debut of drummer Louis Hayes. It was recorded in April of 1960 for the Vee-Jay Records a short lived label owned by African-Americans that produced a number of essential albums. This date was Louis' first under his name and he was only 23. Hayes was born in Detroit on May 31,1937 and just celebrated his 87th Birthday. He is well and still plays engagements. Young Louis picked the tunes and the very worthy sidemen here beginning with his first mentor, the great Yusef Lateef who plays tenor saxophone exclusively here. Nat Adderley is a dynamo on cornet, Barry Harris is on piano and Sam Jones is on bass. Jones and Hayes make for one of the finest rhythm sections in Modern Jazz. The tunes are all originals: one by Yusef Lateef, one by Cannonball Adderley,, one by Sonny Red, one by Nat Adderley and two by Barry Harris. A well paced and swingin' album with great playing by all and inspired by the driving beat and good taste of Louis Hayes. This is the real deal!

Show notes: One of the most highly regarded jazz drummers today, Joe is known for his blazing speed, precision, musical, and melodic playing. Born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1968, Joe grew up in a musical family; his father was a music educator, and he has four older brothers, two of whom became professional musicians. He studied with Alan Dawson and Arthur Taylor prior to attending and graduating from William Patterson College in New Jersey in 1994, where he began playing with saxophonist Eric Alexander and guitarist Peter Bernstein. Upon moving to New York City, he led the weekend jazz combos at Augie's (now Smoke Jazz & Supper Club). He performed with Junior Cook, Cecil Payne, John Ore, Big John Patton, Harold Mabern, Eddie Henderson, John Jenkins, and his brothers, John and James. Joseph's career includes recording over 100 CDs as leader and side-man, jazz festivals, and world tours with Pharaoh Sanders, Horace Silver, Harold Mabern, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Diana Krall, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Johnny Griffin, Lou Donaldson, Benny Green, Barry Harris, Curtis Fuller to name a few. He was the drummer for the late McCoy Tyner, a member of the late Pharaoh Sanders Quartet, and the late Harold Mabern Trio, and is a founding member of the renowned One for All Quintet. My recordings as a leader include Drumspeak and Beautiful Friendship feats. Cedar Walton and Curtis Fuller, Prime Time, Super Prime Time, and Make Someone Happy. Sarah Hanahan is an up-and-coming jazz saxophonist in New York City. Sarah is a graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music, where she received her Bachelor's degree in 2019, as well as The Juilliard School, where she received her master's degree in 2022. She has had the privilege of studying with some of the greats of our time, including Abraham Burton, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, Billy Drummond, and Marc Cary. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/backstagejazz/message

This edition of Essential Taylor Swift took months to put together and is the culmination of her musical career up until the time of publishing. Unlike the previous 2 editions which were loosely chronological in track listing, this edition covers the whole span of her career but in no particular order. Admittedly there are fewer songs from her early years but there a very few remixes of her earlier music that I could find. Her Era's World Tour is in full swing and is on track to become the highest grossing tour by any artist in the world. I didn't even try to get tickets for her Australian tour dates. I thought I'd save myself that disappointment and be satisfied seeing the movie :) She has released some high quality music since my last edition in 2021 so naturally, I was keen to get the club remixes which I knew would be awesome overall. This Era's edition features remixes from Ray Isaac, Ryan Skyy, Optical Disco, Barry Harris, CLX, Dark Intensity, Joe Gauthreaux, Brett Oosterhaus, Jasmin, Dario Xavier and Toy Armada & Jace M. I would like to give special thanks to Russ Rich & Andy Allder, Division 4 and Mark De Lang of Dirty Disco. I badgered them all for new remixes that they might have been hiding and being the extremely generous people they are, they provided me with some advance and private remixes. I can't thank them enough as their contributions helped make this edition the massive compilation that it is. There are 37 tracks here covering a decade of Taylor's music in 3.5hrs. This is my love letter to Taylor Swift and also my Xmas gift to all of the Swifties around the world. EnjoyAnthony1/ "DELICATE" (Dark Intensity Remix)2/ "OUT OF THE WOODS" (Division 4 Remix)3/ "ME!" Kon Kan, el proyecto del canadiense Barry Harris, publica el single “I Beg Your Pardon (I Never Promised You a Rose Garden)” en 1988. Tonight`s Jazz Feature is a kind of meeting between east and west. The leader is the great tenor saxophonist Harold Land and he is paired with trumpeter Joe Gordon who had moved to Los Angeles from Boston and guitarist Wes Montgomery who was living for a time in San Francisco. Those three made up the western contingent. The eastern group consists of Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums who all were Cannonball Adderley`s rhythm section and one of the best. This adds up to a solid straight-ahead Jazz record date. It was recorded at The Jazz Workshop, San Francisco`s leading Jazz club on a night when it was closed, The venue was chosen for it`s good acoustics. The album consists of 3 new Harold Land tunes, Wes Montgomery`s famous `West Coast Blues` (the title track) a ballad by Billie Holiday called `Don`t Explain` and a Charlie Parker tune. All in all a good record date with lots of inspired moments. All recorded in May of 1960 and tonight`s Jazz Feature.

This compilation celebrates iconic modern Gay Pride anthems and their importance to the LGBTQ+ community. The 2023 selection revitalizes legendary anthems from the past half-century, presenting them in an updated format for today's dancefloors. We bring you the most emblematic, compelling songs that echo the universal messages of love, unity, resilience, and defiance within our community. Kicking off this collection, we've selected the ever-resilient anthem, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. It's featured in an exquisite, previously unexplored version - Eric Kupper's House remix, offering a gentle start before escalating into high-energy beats. The list also highlights Whitney Houston's timeless hit, "I Will Always Love You" in a Julian Marsh remix, and Diana Ross' empowering track "I'm Coming Out," remixed by Barry Harris. Each song carries significant meaning for our community, often becoming soundtracks to personal stories of love, acceptance, and identity. Other standouts include Lizzo's "Everybody's Gay" and Miley Cyrus' "Flowers," showing the continual evolution of queer music. Toni Braxton's heart-wrenching "Un-Break My Heart" and CeCe Peniston's classic "Finally," both in revamped remixes, add to the rich tapestry of our anthems. To ensure these powerful messages resonate with listeners, we've chosen remixes that retain the essence of each anthem while injecting a modern energy, making these tunes relatable to the current LGBTQ+ generation. The curation of these modern Gay Pride anthems of 2023 was a challenging task due to the abundance of choices, but we are confident we've selected the most impactful tracks that resonate globally. Our goal was to craft a collection that honors the past while embracing the future, mirroring the continual progress within our community. So, turn up the volume, let the music inspire you, and remember: these songs aren't just anthems; they're a testament to our journey, resilience, and pride. Stay tuned for the release of volume 2 of the 2023 Gay Anthems For A New Generation collection, filled with more modern Gay Pride anthems to soundtrack your celebrations. Welcome to the segment of Epic Maui Journey where I was beginning to ramp the energy up into spine-tingling, foot-stomping anthems. I started this set off with Paloma Faith's most brilliant remake of "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" by Cass Elliot. From there I weaved through anthemic house and disco house masterpieces. My surprises during this set are of course the "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" but also include the remake of Michael Jackson's classic "Earth Song" by Revival & The GeO Gospel Choir (which was undeniably one of the biggest house music anthems of the last year). Also included is a breathtaking remix of Betty Wright's "Open The Door To Your Heart". by Kevin McKay and Barry Harris' brilliant remix of The Jacksons' "Can You Feel It". Surrounding those centerpieces I also included anthems by my favorite producers KC Lights and Purple Disco Machine. Everything all put together produced over an hour of music that pushed us into full on euphoric hysteria. Perfection under the bright and sunny skies. ;-)#/Artist/Title/Remix01. Born in 1967 to the late, great bassist Jamil Nasser, Muneer 's exposure to the jazz idiom was early and powerful. In 1976, "My dad took me to see Dizzy Gillespie at the Village Gate and Dizzy blew the place apart.  I had to get a trumpet and weeks later I did."  In 1979, he went to the International Art of Jazz Workshop for college students. Dave Burns, a trumpeter in Gillespie's Big Band, had reservations about his age. Muneer's talent, however, overshadowed this concern.  "Mr. Burns acceptance fortified my confidence and I began studying with him." Muneer also received private instruction from George Coleman, Jimmy Owens, Oliver Beener, and Webster Young. These workshops and lessons taught him the basics of jazz improvisation, which were tested at serious jam sessions conducted by Eddie Henderson, Ted Curson, Tommy Turrentine, Barry Harris, C Sharpe, and Gil Coggins. "If you couldn't play, they would bench you with quickness and give you a homework assignment." As a youngster, Muneer saw many masters in concert such as George Coleman, Randy Weston, Lou Donaldson, Woody Shaw, Roy Eldridge, and Phineas Newborn.Support the show

"The Sidewinder" Lee Morgan: The Sidewinder (Blue Note, 1964) Lee Morgan, Joe Henderson, Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw, Billy Higgins. Racism, Sexism, Trumpism, Pseudo-Christianity and the CinemaLionel Barry HarrisWell prior to the 2016 presidential election and many, many years before Spike Lee tackled the subject matter on film, I was virtually obsessed with "Doing the right thing," both morally and spiritually. In addition, I've been on a lifelong quest to be a tangible blessing and inspiration to everyone I interact with, and especially children - whom I was blessed to work with and around for a period of forty (40) years. I truly believe that outward and inner joy is achieved by making others happy and bringing the very best out in them. In essence, I feel we are flesh and blood blessings to one another and not sources of sorrow, pain and turmoil. I have spent an entire lifetime practicing and endorsing the aforementioned principles and I am acutely mindful that there are individuals who fully disdain them. Unfortunately, Donald Trump, our sitting president, is such a person. Therefore, I am diametrically opposed to him and I am compelled to speak out against him.Lionel Harris is a native of St. Louis, Mo. After serving 3 years in the U.S. Army, he engaged in a whole gamut of interesting jobs. After managing a large janitorial service, he was employed by the federal government, the St. Louis Police Dept., the Potter Electric Co. and, most enduring of them all (34 years), the St. Louis Public Schools at the high school level. In addition to being married for 28 years and raising three children, he also worked part-time in the GED program and, later on, drove a school bus for the Ferguson-Florissant School District.https://www.readersmagnet.com/product/racism-sexism-trumpism-pseudo-christianity-and-the-cinema/https://www.dukelharris.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/lharrisrm.mp3

This Jazz Feature album is a rather rare one and it's the debut recording as a leader of drum master Louis Hayes. Louis Hayes was just 21 when he recorded this date on April 26,1960. He was by then working steadily with Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and he chose musicians that he enjoyed playing with and of course 3 of them were also working with Adderley. Louis chose Nat Adderley on cornet, Barry Harris on piano and Sam Jones on bass. The other important member was an early mentor of Louis' and the man who gave him his first gigs. That man was the great Yusef Lateef. Yusef is heard here exclusively on tenor saxophone and his big dark sound is one of the album's highlights. Louis wisely chose music not associated with the Adderley Quintet but selected the tunes for themselves and that fact marks this date as distinctive. This is a great debut for a most talented young man. Louis didn't record again as a leader until the mid-70's. Louis Hayes and company equals high quality Jazz!

Pianist Jack Wilson was one such individual – a favorite among The Major Scale team for his finesse on the keys, paired with his knack for compelling composition. In this episode we evangelize his work and mark the occasion of a posthumous release, Call Me: Live At the Penthouse, newly released from Light In The Attic Records. We're not alone in our praise of the man. Ahmad Jamal and Barry Harris speak very highly of him, along with Wilson's bandmates Roy Ayers and Von Barlow, producer Michael Cuscuna, and Vanity Fair editor and author David Friend – all of whom join us to share their accolades for Jack Wilson. Sonny Stitt was one of the true masters of the saxophone and a favorite of just about every other saxophonist and yet he remains underrated. His flow and his ideas and both alto and tenor saxophones is unparalleled. Stitt recorded prolifically and mostly in a quartet setting with piano bass and drums or with organ, guitar and drums. Here he is on one of his finest outings done a few days after his birthday on Feb. 8,1972. Stitt is backed by a "Cadillac" rhythm section of Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. Our Jazz Feature album is called "Tune Up" and Stitt offers us his interpretations of some good standards and some Jazz originals. As always he is masterful and one can hear on this recording why he was everyone's favorite. Sonny Stitt...Jazz mastery!

Jimmy Heath at 92 is one of the living Jazz Masters and still going strong playing, composing, touring and band leading. Jimmy was from the illustrious Heath Family which included the late bassist Percy and the still living youngest brother, drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Our Jazz Feature album is a fine example, more then fine, perhaps one of the best examples of Jimmy Heath's playing done in 1975 when he was 49. "Picture of Heath" places Jimmy playing mostly tenor saxophone but on soprano saxophone on two tunes in front of a great rhythm section with the still living Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Only one standard is heard here and that's the ballad "Body and Soul" where Jimmy plays both horns. The five remaining tunes are all Jimmy's. "For Minor's Only", "Picture of Heath", "Bruh' Slim", "All Members" and "CTA". "Picture of Heath" paints a great musical picture of one of Jazz music's great masters.
