For the next ep of Spectral Voices I invited @ohm-599575574, a mainstay of the Icelandic techno scene with over 20 releases on labels such as Thule records, Rawax, Kontakt, Solid Groove, Taped Artifact, Ranges, Vade mecum, Vuo records and AE Recordings which he co-ran with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records. Now, Ohm runs his own imprint called 'Ohm Series', where he shines a light on a mixture of well-beloved veterans and some vibrant new names pushing techno's sonic boundaries. His integrity to the dub techno sound is the cornerstone of its operation. I play for most of the first hour, then Ohm's mix starts from 53mins. thanks to @refugeworldwide https://www.discogs.com/label/2338207-OHM-Series https://ohmseries.bandcamp.com/
Good evening friends, welcome to the podcast of various electronic arts back here at the "ESOA Podcast". Today with a great artist from Iceland, Ohm is my guest today. And once again I'm very happy about that, because this is another exceptional artist who can look back on a long musical history. He has been active since the 90s and can therefore look back on a lot of creativity not only as a DJ but also as a producer. First success came very quickly in the course of his debut, which he released in collaboration with another Icelandic legend EXOS on one of the most inspiring techno labels of the past, here we are talking about "Force Inc". Over the years, many more releases piled up on renowned labels such as Thule Records, Rawax, Kontakt, Solid Groove, Taped Artifact, Ranges, Vade mecum , Vuo records and AE Recordings, as well as AE recordings Ltd, which he runs together with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records. Currently he also runs his own label "OHM Series". Ohm now lives in Copenhagen and plays the "Culture Box" here quite often, but you can also see and hear him play all over Europe, if not all over the world. He also runs two shows on the online platform Timeline Musik where he presents Danish artists on the one hand and promos from his friends on the other. He himself calls his sound tried and tested and visionary, and I'm happy to let that stand. For me he is clearly an artist of Dub Techno. Ok here is ESOA podcast number 041 by OHM. Enjoy this great sound As always, thanks for listening. @octalindustries is the solo project of Jónas Thor Gudmundsson. The project was originally founded in 2003 by Jonas and Mike Sickinger, the founder of the Octal label. The debut release of their collaboration was the Automatik EP on the Transistor Rhythm output. Couple of years later they joined their friend Deep Chord for a shared 12“ release, which today is a quite a valuable gem for dub techno lovers. The three of them joined hands together later that year to create a 3x12“ release undir the pseudonym Spectral Network. The release was quite limited (111 copies) and was considered one of the most interesting 12“ releases that year by many critics. After the release of the Spectral Network eps the duo went for hiatus as other projects took over, also as opportunity for musical collaborations became harder as the Atlantic Ocean divides them. Jonas continued working on other projects as @ruxpin – producing numerous releases along the way. In 2011 the duo was asked by the French independent label @entropy-records to do some releases. As Michael was unable to participate, Jonas went on solo and worked on a full-length release, which later became Meeting of the Waves LP. Another remix followed for G.R.I.T. which was hailed by dubtechnoblog.com as the best remix of the year 2012. In more recent years, Octal Industries has been working on numerous collaborations with artists such as fellow Icelander @ohm-599575574 - and fruits of their work has been released on labels such as @thule-records, Rawax, @luckofaccess, @allinnrecords and many more. Octal Industries also released works independently in 2019 an EP entitled Julia Sets on @kontaktrecordscph, which featured a remix from the Detroit legend @mikehuckaby – and his second full-length album Our Seasons, which was released on Vertex in December 2019. Octal Industries, although being Icelandic in origin, works and resides in Tallinn, Estonia. Stay Rave with #R13! From the depths of dub techno, we arise today with the tones of NonniMal's ‘Hverfisgata' which is also the title track of his debut LP on the storied Thule Records. For the last few years, the Reykjavik-based DJ and producer has been honing his style of atmospheric, sweeping sounds with releases on Æ Recordings, and LAHAR. Hverfisgata is a journey through a decidedly natural soundstage. With birds chirping throughout, coinciding with the proverbial blasts of ‘wind', the expansive, textured synths bring an air of discord out. Something is brewing in the distance, the calm before the proverbial storm. write up by https://soundcloud.com/huedj NonniMal on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/nonnimal Thule Records on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/thule-records Thule Records on FB: https://www.facebook.com/thulerecords
Today we have a very special NY gift with some unreleased tracks. DJ and producer Bjarnar Jonsson aka Ohm (@ohm-599575574) is one of the leading figures in the Icelandic contemporary techno scene. Widely associated with iconic labels such as @thule-records, @achim-szepanski, @rawax-chiwax-housewax, @luckofaccess , @tapedartifact, @kontacthelsinki and @allinnrecords ! Ohm stays true to his roots by consistently innovating his interpretation of techno music, intergrating soul and innovation with the scene. The #Copenhagen - based artist was born and raised in #Reykjavik, #Iceland, and caught the music bug early on. In 1999 his debut release, a collaboration with the Icelandic techno legend @exos, was released on Force Inc and was critically acclaimed. Since then he has been a constant source of techno anthems – most recently releasing his works on Thule Records, Rawax,Taped artifact, AE records, @xozmusic, @solid-groove-records and Kontakt records – and working with veterans such as @octalindustries and his long time collaborator @exos, and now recently with @kvadrant, label boss of Kontakt records and host of the legendary Tweak fm shows. He has been a regular guest at the legendary techno club Culture Box in Copenhagen – alongside frequently performing in his native country. Because of Ohm’s unique style, it’s hard to label his music but you can definitely hear influences from Detroit tunes, dub and of course classic minimal techno. He tries hard not to be limited to any specific formulas and manages in that way to successfully create his own distinctive sound. Constantly evolving his production skills and questioning the things around him. Ohm seeks to inspire his listeners with sounds both reduced and rough, balanced by emotional and surprising moments throughout his sets. Between pure techno, banging dub techno tracks, tracks old and new, Ohm communicates his message with an apparent effortlessness. Happy New Year and Stay Rave with #R13!
Next up for our winter season of artists from the Icelandic deep techno hive, we welcome Jonas Thor Gudmundsson AKA Ruxpin AKA Octal Industries. This amazing 1 hour of deep, dubby, industrial machine techno sounds is released under his Octal Industries moniker... why? Because it is a live improvised electronics performance of mostly unreleased Octal Industries materials. Now living in Tallin, Estonia, this guy is an absolute legend in our view, having released many strings of mind-bending releases since the late 90's on some magical labels (including Thule Records) and leaving a frothing wake of highly sought after deep/dub techno releases. Since the early days of his career he has collaborated with some of the most talented artists from Iceland including Yagya, Árni Valur Kristinsson and OHM, and also with some from further afield including Rod Modell and Michael Sickinger from the USA. Despite this rich artistic legacy, it is clear from his words below and this live mix before you now, that his musical story is still unravelling with lots more exciting chapters soon to come. "On the 28th of November 2018 I sat down and did a little studio mix - compiled with loops and samples from mostly unreleased tracks from my vault. Some of the songs are my creation and others are collaboration work with my good friend OHM. I don't think the plan is to somehow showcase a current live set, but rather to showcase what listeners might expect with the releases upcoming in 2019. I'm trying to find some middle-ground between dancefloor and home listening. Not sure if that works, but we'll see. There are some interesting releases in the pipeline, mostly done in collaboration with OHM. There will be 12" releases on the legendary Rawax, Luck Of Access (a new label run by Andrey Pushkarev), and also a digital release on Gartenhaus. I have an ambient techno-style LP ready in my archives, which I'll throw out myself digitally (or by other means) when I find a proper gap in the release schedule. I'll also have a track featured on a compilation from Unknown Tribe. Anyway, lots of good things on the horizon and I'm sure that 2019 will be as fruitful as the previous years have been for me." As we get deep into the winter, we have decided to take inspiration from those who know how to zone out and party hard in the icy cold conditions better than anyone else... here for the first of 3 Icelandic artists on 3 consecutive episodes on Avenue Red throughout December, we welcome Ísar Logi Arnarsson AKA COLD from Reykjavík. Forever a legend on Icelandic techno powerhouse Thule Records, with his Hyper Experience EP (THL001) opening the account back in 1995, Ísar quickly gained the attention of many including Sven Väth, who played the record shortly after it was released to close out his set at the Berlin Love Parade. However, things then went cold (!) on the production front, with him reawakening again in 2017 full of ideas and inspiration, leading to a 6-track release on the experimental new Thule sister label AE Recordings, soon followed by his Dub Safari EP on Thule earlier this year. Here COLD has delivered an impeccably dark, groovy set full of rigid, sharp, bare-bones beats with some tribal overlays, all mingled with those trademark deep, breezy dub-laden Icelandic techno vibes we are all big fans of over in this corner. "The underground music scene in Iceland is pretty active considering the size and number of people, primarily in Reykjavik of course. We have a few venues that make it their goal to accommodate both live performances and DJ's, mostly locals with the occasional international visitor to spice things up. I don't need to go far to get inspiration from the dance floor. My fellow Icelandic producers have been my biggest motivators and inspiration... I can't thank them enough! About this mix: I started by collecting all the music/artists that I found to be inspiring me at the moment and found a way to coalesce it into a tight but blissful, thumping club mix. I picked out a handful of my all-time favourites and some fresh Icelandic ones. Then I ground the songs down to their elements and started the merry-go-round, but as the mix progresses I give the songs more space to breathe and evolve. This is the kind of music that would have me dancing for hours with my eyes closed, with images of larger than life scenery in my mind." W is the much-anticipated debut album of Waage, a young & exciting Reykjavik-based producer. His debut EP offers a spacious, texturally intoxicating and hypnotic minimal techno – a journey through rhythmatic musical landscapes. W1 is a ode to Basic Channel – a propulsive, yet delicate, mantra. The repetitive nature of it will take a hold of the listeners and project them into previously unknown state of mind. W6 is reminiscent of some of the finest works of legendary Icelandic techno producer Exos, who happens to be the mentor of this young up and coming artist. The whole EP is driven by curiosity and passion, and despite some obvious influences manages to offer something fresh and exotic for the adventurous music consumer. Thule Records is considered by many to be a pioneers in the field of dub-influenced techno music and was a starting point for many of Iceland‘s most renowned electronic musicians.
Raw and dry Dub Techno mix for the australian record label Primary [colours], originally released in 2015. Less chordy this time but still filled with great basslines. This mix comes with very reduced, danceable rhythms in a dry manner. You can also expect an extensive atmospheric technoish outro. 16 isn't a particularly special number. But this is a particularly special installment! From Reykjavik, Iceland - the world's northernmost capital dubbed as "The Worlds Biggest Little Metropolis" as the city holds two thirds of the Icelandic population - we present Exos (real name Arnviður Snorrason), a unique and creative techno innovator who has become well-known for his uber-quality releases on respected labels such as Force Inc. Music Works, Mosaic, Symbolism and also Thule Records, a cult-status Icelandic techno label that has been recently reincarnated under a new name, Strobelight Network. This 75-minute vinyl mix is the product of a great deal of care and attention. As per usual we asked Exos to dig deep in his collection to come up with something truly special and what we have here is a treasure trove of techno gems and lost oddities that are deep, dubby, blissful, melodic, bold, strange and at times completely "far-out" (Iceland style!). We are pleased that he has paid some homage to the music that has originated from his Icelandic peers as we have records here from his friends Yagya (Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson), Thor (Þórhallur Skúlason) and also his father who is known as Octal (Snorri Arnarson). As we were digging through the submitted tracklist to normalise it to our usual format and resolution of detail, we realised that the collective value of all these records is in the region of £1000+ on current discogs prices. But musically, end-product-wise, this mix is much greater than the sum of it's parts thanks to the wizardry of Exos on the decks and we are glad to deliver something priceless that you can download for free. These incredible records... they are in good hands already. "In my life, I am experiencing a touch of timeless awareness. The time is speeding up, I am confusing time and there is something happening to the "Now" as I understand it. That is something that I try to explain in this mix. Music from different directions from here to there. It's also a Spring-time soundtrack for my favorite time of the year when April, May and June hits their magic with sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. The highlight in my life is my unborn nephew who will come to light in 2 weeks. Happy summer to all of you."
