The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is criticizing the provincial government's 82% budget cut to Schools of Specialization, which they say will hinder learners' chances of gaining skilled jobs. The funding for these schools has been slashed from R69.29 million in 2022 to R13 million in 2024. The DA says this cut will negatively impact the development of critical skills needed for the economy and challenges the government's claim of empowering youth through these schools. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Michael Waters, Member of Provincial Legislature and DA Gauteng Spokesperson for Education

The City of Cape Town (CoCT) says its total proposed budget for water and sanitation for the upcoming 2024/25 financial year is R18.5-billion. Of this, R5.3-billion will be spent on capital projects, while R13.2-billion is allocated to operations. "Residents are assured that these remain key priorities for the city: building a water secure future, delivering clean, reliable drinking water and dignified sanitation services to residents in Cape Town, as well as reducing sewer overflows and improving treating wastewater so that we safeguard our environment and improve inland water quality," says Water and Sanitation MMC Zahid Badroodien. According to the budget, the city aims to spend R38.25-million on new taps and toilets for informal settlements. Within the new water programme (NWP), the city notes that surface water currently makes up about 98% of its drinking water. By 2040, however, the expectation is that groundwater, desalination and water reuse will account for 25% of supply. This will be in addition to the removal of alien invasive plant species in the city's catchment areas. "We are bringing online alternative water sources that will serve our growing population," says Badroodien."[We] will work towards implementing new water projects that include desalination, aquifer abstraction and our Faure new water programme." Badroodien notes that the city will invest R460.16-million this year in major infrastructure projects, the bulk being aquifer projects which form part of the NWP, including the Cape Flats Aquifer Recharge and related projects; the Atlantis Aquifer project, and the Table Mountain Group Aquifer and related projects. In terms of wastewater treatment works, the city expects to spend R2.58-billion on extensions and upgrades over the next financial year. This is planned to increase to R2.96-billion in the 2025/26 financial year. CoCT says the wastewater treatment works programme will expand the capacity of a number of key facilities. The Potsdam works will upgrade from 47 Ml/d to 100 Ml/d (this is currently in the construction stage). The Athlone works is in Phase 1 of a refurbishment and treatment process upgrade. The Bellville works is in the final phase of a refurbishment and treatment process upgrade. The Macassar works is in the design phase of an upgrade from 34 Ml/d to 80 Ml/d. Other wastewater works projects include Wesfleur, which is at the tender award stage for an aeration system replacement/refurbishment programme. At Wildevoëlvlei, the tender is currently being advertised for the refurbishment and upgrade of the mechanical sludge dewatering facility. Cape Town's 2024/25 water and sanitation budget also allocates R1.07-billion for various projects to prevent sewer overflows. This includes R154.37-million for the upgrade/refurbishment of sewer pump stations; R315.11-million for the replacement of 100 km of sewer pipes; and R597.51-million to tackle sewer spills by upgrading bulk sewers in Cape Flats, Philippi, Milnerton and Gordons Bay. The budget also allocates R83.36-million for the replacement of 50 km of water pipes to residential and business properties. The aim is to also spend R127.7-million on generators and uninterrupted power supply installations for sewer and water pump stations, as well as wastewater treatment plants.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala has reportedly revealed that about R13.8 million may have been lost to corruption across the expanded public works programmes (EPWP). Responding to DA MP, Sello Seitlholo, Zikalala reportedly said verifications done with the Department of Public Service and Administration Personnel and Salaries (Persal) management system have identified suspicious transactions on the EPWP-allocated budgets that may have been lost to corruption, undeserving beneficiaries and theft. To further discuss this Elvis Presslin spoke to DA Member of Parliament Sello Seitlholo

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Group wind power generation last year increased by 8% and the Lephalale solar power project is on its way to being operational in the first quarter of next year, Exxaro CE Dr Nombasa Tsengwa highlighted during the company's presentation of double-dividend 2023 results. The increased wind performance resulted in 727 GWh of high-margin of green electricity being generated into the market at a high earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) margin - and, were it not for a fault that occurred on the distribution network of State-owned power utility Eskom, there would have been 15 GWh more. The 2023 Ebitda margin or the energy business was 80% for the second consecutive year, emphasising the stability of the renewable energy business. Additional good news on the climate change mitigation front is that the 68 MW Lephalale solar power project under construction is poised to provide Exxaro's Grootegeluk coal mine with 176 GWh/y of green energy in the first quarter of 2025 - earlier than the operational date reported by Mining Weekly in a previous report. Regarding wind energy, Exxaro FD Riaan Koppeschaar pointed out that the project financing of R4.3-billion for the Cennergi wind farms - which will be fully settled in 2031 and which have no recourse to the Exxaro balance sheet - are hedged through interest rate swops at an effective interest rate of 12.8%. Koppeschaar also noted that hedge accounting is also applied to the Lephalale solar project, which ensures limited volatility on the profit-and-loss account. The empowered coal, energy, and ferrous-linked company declared a final dividend of R10.10 a share, which is roughly R3.4-billion, and drew loud applause when it announced a special dividend of R5.72 a share, which is about R2-billion as well. Exxaro's shareholder distribution has totalled more than R45-billion over five years. Exxaro reported its second highest Ebitda performance of R13.4-billion for the financial year ended December 31, despite lower coal export prices and reduced domestic and export sales volumes of coal. Coal revenue decreased 18% to R37-million and coal Ebitda decreased by 36%. "We remain committed to our sustainable growth and impact strategy as we transition towards becoming a more diversified business," Tsengwa said. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) One of Exxaro's strategic priorities is to grow its energy business and become carbon neutral by 2050, while integrating environmental social governance (ESG). "We continue to benchmark above our peers on global ESG best practice," Tsengwa revealed. The R1.6-billion Lephalale solar photovoltaic power plant will provide Exxaro with a 27% reduction in Scope 2 emissions, carbon intensity has been reduced by 20% and a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the Council of Geosciences to explore carbon capture usage and storage to mitigate difficult-to-abate carbon emissions. 'WONDERFUL MARKET' During the media briefing, Exxaro Energy MD Leon Groenewald provided additional insight into the renewables business in response to Mining Weekly's questions. Regarding the Lephalale solar power, he said: "Our aim is to be operational in the first quarter of next year and it will help us, firstly for us as a business, to make some decent money, but also saving some 27% of Scope 2 emissions, and then making a healthy dent in the Eskom monthly account. "We think the renewables market is quite healthy currently, both for organic and inorganic opportunities, and we are pursuing both," he said, amid the current request for information (RFI) environment. "We're building a pipeline to participate in the RFIs that are being issued and we are in the market and awaiting feedback on some of these processes, so we're quite bullish. "On the merger and acquisition front, we're active in most of data rooms, and the moment you're in a data room, the confidentiali...

Of the original crop of Detroit DJs, @delano_smith is one of the few still dedicated to the craft. At a time described as the Wild West by some, when party culture was taking its first tentative steps, Delano honed his skills under the guidance of the late, great Ken Collier. With initial sets fusing soul, disco and early electronic sounds, Delano planted seeds in the minds of Detroit's subsequent generations. Those dancing to his sets in the late 70s and early 80s would later become ambassadors of a scene with worldwide appeal. Now, Delano stands shoulder to shoulder with the figureheads he once educated, writing a brand new chapter for house and techno. Following a period out of the game, Delano returned with a new focus, forming the DJ collective BeatDownSounds with long-time peers Norm Talley and @mikeagentx. The trio offered a unique, slowed down and raw take on house, a sound picked up by London/Tokyo label, @third-ear-recordings, and presented on the double-length compilation ‘Detroit BeatDown Vol.1', the success of which enabled Delano and his partners to represent the Motor City on an international level. In 2002 his own Mixmode imprint. In 2009 Delano formed a pivotal relationship with the Berlin-based @sushitech, following a chance meeting with label head @yossi Amoyal, the setting Panorama Bar, a club that would later help define Delano's musical direction. After a string of successful Sushitech EPs, Delano dropped ‘Odyssey' onto the scene's collective consciousness, an album spawning enduring dancefloor favourites. Two years later his sophomore long player arrived, loaded with dark and dubby material ‘Twilight' was a curve ball to follow the hysteria that greeted his debut. 2017 saw Delano add yet another Sushitech LP to his discography, entitled ‘Detroit Lost Tapes' it offered archived material, dug out and recontextualised with a worldwide tour following in support. Organised crime syndicates are bleeding South Africa's national economy of R155 billion a year - and that number is “significantly understated”. That is according to Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Finance, Dr Dion George. He gives this breakdown: Construction mafia - R17 billion; Infrastructure vandalism and arson - R47 billion; ESKOM's organised crime networks R12 billion; Kidnapping and extortion syndicates - R146 million; Illicit economy, specifically drugs and guns - R13.6 billion; Wildlife syndicates - R1.2 billion; Illegal mining networks (Zama Zamas) - R14 billion; Tender corruption - R30 billion; and the Tobacco and cigarettes Mafia - R20 billion.” He calls on Government to make organised crime a priority - and to stop wasting resources on “never-ending bailouts to basically bankrupt entities”. Dr George says South Africa is only on its knees because the government has chosen the wrong economic policies.

Alarmed experts have sounded warning for the mental and physical wellbeing of Kiwi children after new research revealed our kids are spending about a third of after-school time on screens. The high rate of screen time is exposing youngsters to cyberbullying, harmful sexualised content and inappropriate advertising for sectors such as alcohol and gambling. YouTube and Netflix are the most popular websites, with one in three children under 14 using social media, most commonly TikTok, which is rated R13. Experts say the problem has worsened since the country was plunged into Covid-19 lockdowns as families' activities and schooling were thrown into disarray. They say regulations are urgently needed to protect children from harm in the largely unregulated online world. An Auckland mother of five says her family try to limit screen time and use of devices during the school week and has banned TikTok in the house due to inappropriate content and swearing. “When I heard that it was always ‘get off it'. We can't always control it, but none of them have social media.” In a University of Otago study, adolescents' habits were tracked by body cameras between 3.30pm and bedtime, with screen time exceeding the recommended level - less than two hours a day outside school hours. Kids were found to spend around 10 per cent of their time on two screens. Developing research says multiple screen use could be linked with poorer sleep (compared to single screen use). Photo / University of Otago The significant amount of time spent in front of screens raised health and wellbeing concerns, said senior researcher Dr Moira Smith, from the University of Otago's Department of Public Health in Wellington. “It is associated with obesity, poor mental wellbeing, poor sleep and mental functioning and lack of physical activity,” she said. “It also affects children's ability to concentrate and regulate their behaviour and emotions.” The findings, published in the New Zealand Medical Journal today, were likely to be an underestimate. The initial data collection was in 2014/15, and use of smartphones and online activity is believed to have increased since then - especially during the pandemic. It is not yet known whether habits formed during the Covid period have persisted, and this is the subject of further research. The Auckland mother said she and her husband were “pretty strict” about how much time the kids spent on electronic devices during the school week. “If they've got homework, or maybe a movie, then we'll let them on. Otherwise, they're pretty busy from Monday to Friday with school sport training. “In the weekend we're a bit more lenient, but they have to do their chores first and maybe do a bit of reading and then they can spend a bit of time on their devices.” A lot of her friends had kids who were already on social media. “It's scary, in case they're watching something inappropriate and rude that we don't know.” While screen time was reasonably easy to navigate at home as both parents were on the same page, she said it would be harder in a single-parent home where kids might get left on devices more often “so they can do housework or whatever”. The paper's authors said the amount of time young people spent online also raised concerns around cyberbullying, exposure to sexism and racism, and exposure to advertising for vapes, alcohol, gambling and junk food. New Zealand legislation was outdated and failed to adequately deal with the online world children were being exposed to, Smith said. “While screen use has many benefits, children need to be protected from harm in this largely unregulated space,” she said. Last month, the Government began consulting on changes to how online content is regulated in New Zealand. That could eventually mean social media companies with a presence in New Zealand have to sign codes of practice requiring them to proactively manage harmful content. The researchers applauded this work, which is being led by the Department of Internal Affairs. The Otago study involved placing body cameras on 108 children and analysing images, which were taken every seven seconds. A young person from the study wearing a body cam to track their screen time. Photo / University of Otago On average, children were in front of screens for 23 minutes of every hour outside school time. Boys were more likely to spend more time in front of screens, and Māori and Pacific adolescents had more screen time than young people of European descent. Around 10 minutes per hour were spent in front of more than one screen. Researchers said this could carry additional health risks to single-screen use, with preliminary studies indicating an association with poorer sleep. High rates of screen time raised health concerns because they displaced activities like active play and sleep. It also negatively affects a child's ability to focus their attention and regulate their behaviour and emotions. It was also problematic because of exposure to cyberbullying. New Zealand has high rates of cyberbullying, with around one in four parents reporting their children had been bullied online. Research by the University of Auckland concluded that blanket screen limits - such as the two-hour recommendation - did not reflect contemporary family life. Instead, the researchers called for a fresh approach, where parents and caregivers aimed to be more involved in their children's screen time by monitoring content, choosing interactive screen activities rather than passive watching, and balancing screen use with family time. The World Health Organization recommends school-aged children, up to 17, limit their recreational screen time. Children aged 2 to 4 should not have more than one hour of screen time per day and even less is better, the WHO advises. It also suggested kids younger than 2 should have zero screen time. In March, Health insurer nib New Zealand released findings from its annual State of the Nation Parenting Survey that showed technology use and the impact of screen time was the number one concern for 70 per cent of parents. Half of those parents surveyed said children spent too much time on devices, and 66 per cent admitted relying on screens as a bargaining chip and distraction tool for children. Seventy per cent of parents had taken action: limiting kids' screen time (52 per cent) and taking away devices as punishment (57 per cent). How much time should kids spend in front of screens? 0-2 years: Zero use 2-5 years: less than 1 hour a day 5-17 years: less than 2 hours (Ministry of Health statistics) - Isaac Davison, NZHSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

@insect-o composes music between ambient, dub and techno. In 1998 he founded the label @etui-records. His latest EP Sandstones came out in March 2023. In the tracks, he combines field recordings with rippling chords, soundscapes from his modular synthesizer and a fat bottom-end. But there is always more to discover. Besides his music, the Dresden-based artist shares a big passion for travelling. At the Atacama desert, he found the inspiration for his first full-length, released in 2018. With Melbourne's @echoinspectors he recorded Bourne Dub and Bribie Dub, which has been released on Australian Primary [Colours] imprint. Insect O. is an old hand in Dresden's electronic music scene. Enthusiastic about the radio show electronics on East German radio station DT64 in the early nineties he started buying records and making music at the age of 14. In the late 90s, he was a co-promoter and resident DJ of Dresden's famous techno club Flugzeugwerft. Today he organizes workshops about music production for @davefestival in Dresden. Thin, weedy, with his own afro hair that is a kind of tribute to the black roots of a sound shared by funk and house, which make him look like a mushroom cloud! That's the way in which we love to describe him while he is playing sacred and deep grooves. @giacomopellegrino is part of that particular category of people that really knows very well the meaning of the word passion. He received his “Calling” to djing when he was only fourteen. Son of a musician, following his father around to every concert, visiting the most important clubs and venues of Sicily. Thanks to that experience, he developed a true passion for music and clubbing and, later, for djing. Despite still being too young to perform at night as a DJ, Giacomo started to arrange a few shows for friends, playing sets focused on dance music from the 70's and the 80's, his first musical love. A few years later, his style became a “monolith” of dance and funk, house and tech. Giacomo has his hand in every aspect of the music scene. He also founded his own record label called @detroitside, which is dedicated to the very passionate vinyl and DJ community. A label that promotes quality over quantity in the house and techno segment. Artist's such as @delano_smith,@bassaclan, @dixia-sirong, @enricomantini, Franck Roger, @julien-sandre, @nick-beringer, @monika-ross, Moreon & Baffa, Ocu, @samofdelaphine! have all released tracks on his imprint. Giacomo doesn't stop there though as he cultivates his own nights in the local area that are ardent about presenting some of the best dance music around in the most optimal and premier environments possible. Still, Giacomo finds time to be a highly regarded producer with releases on a myriad of top-class labels like Purism Wave, Signatune Records, Carac Records, AvantRoots, Vibe Experience, hello strange, Deep Freaks, Greyscale records among others. Heavily influenced by classic sounds of yesterday while thinking about the future of electronic music has inevitably crossed over to his production side working in a heavily analog and modified setup. Analog Four, Roland SH101, Korg Electribe, Korg Minilogue and Jomox Alpha Base are the main pieces he uses. Processing and effects duties come courtesy of Lexicon and Boss while his 24 track Allen Heath console fine tunes the final product for last step before mastering. As a kid of two immigrants and growing up in Rhodes, Greece, Faidra was sent to NYC for three months with the difficult task of finding an internship in the fast-paced world of fashion. This was no small demand, but after a few weeks, Faidra secured her first internship with Fleet Street ltd, an outerwear wholesale retail company with clients from the likes of Vince Camuto to Kendall + Kylie, with little-to-no experience underneath her belt. A couple of years later and after pursuing an education at FIT, Faidra went on to work as a Design and Development Assistant at Sandy Liang and is currently doing Development and Production at cool-girl denim brand, R13. And now at 25 years old, Faidra started her own brand, DANAE, with the mission to design and create something that would not only showcase the beauty of other women that she always admired, but that would also create a community that gives back to her island and country. In this episode of the podcast, Faidra discusses her stance on unpaid internships in fashion, the value of looking for opportunities with smaller companies, not being afraid to demand the things you want in life, and the dos and don'ts of trying to score an internship in fashion. You can find Faidra on Instagram at @faidratzedakis and you can also find her brand DANAE at @danaethebrand and danaeofficial.com As always, don't forget to rate, review, and follow the Life of a Fashion Student Podcast.
