Returning to work after maternity leave should be a transition, not a battle — but for many women, it's anything but smooth. In this episode of Mom's at Work, we explore the hidden struggles of working mothers re-entering the workplace, especially in hostile or unsupportive environments. From being sidelined or laid off to facing subtle (and not-so-subtle) biases, many mothers find that their roles have changed — not because of their abilities, but because of how they're perceived once they become mothers. And because too many workplaces still don't commit enough to figuring out how best to support them when they return. We speak with growth marketer Kendra Pennington, on how the judgment she felt at work since becoming a mother has led to “employment-inflicted trauma” that she carries with her today. And we speak with Bodacious founder Zoe Scaman on how she unearthed hundreds of other mothers' stories about being squeezed out of their companies, and the true cost of that to businesses. And we speak with both Kendra and sociologist and professor Jessica Calarco on the “supermom myth” and why some feel that label has become toxic in a period of disillusionment where many women feel “having it all” simply means “doing it all.” We're also joined by Amanda Carlson-Phillips, chief performance innovation officer at human performance and wellness company Exos, about the importance of having a “pro-recovery culture.” And Maven Clinic's Will Porteous gives us valuable insights into the parent burnout crisis and why employer support drops off at the most critical point in parent's journeys.

Today's podcast is with Scott Salwasser. Scott is a sports performance specialist at EXOS, and previously served as the Head of Athletic Performance for Bishop Lynch High School, along with stops at numerous NCAA DI institutions, as well as work in the private sector. Scott is a field leader in assessment protocols and training methodology for physical preparation, speed, and combine development. As technology continues to push forward, and the data that comes with it, it's crucial to have practical methods to apply technology to training in a meaningful way. Scott has a strong background in technology/assessment protocols, but is deeply practical and puts coaching and applied techniques at the forefront of his system. On the podcast today, Scott speaks on his experiences and transition away from sports performance in the NCAA, and talks on athlete assessments for speed and movement abilities, asymmetries, and meeting the evolving needs of an athlete over time. Scott has a great sense of what it takes to distill technology and advanced concepts into the needs of athletes in a performance setting, and it was great to catch up with him for this episode. Sheri Walters’ journey to Director of Sports Medicine at Texas A&M University reflects a career defined by innovation, collaboration, and comprehensive integration. Walters discusses the "arms race" in collegiate athletics and how Texas A&M shatters silos through unit alignment and being intentionally present. Drawing from her EXOS experience, she highlights the impact of integrating sports medicine with strength and conditioning. Walters employs research-based cross-body training to maintain strength, prioritizing long-term rehabilitation over limb symmetry index testing. She explains how her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) and Certified Performance and Sport Scientist® (CPSS®) credentials enable her to elevate rehabilitation and speak the language of sport performance professionals. Walters underscores the importance of getting student-athletes back to team strength and conditioning as soon as tissues can tolerate it to promote physiological and psychological healing. She also shares how strength and conditioning coaches can optimize return to performance and reduce reinjury risk. I don't want to be rehabbing a lower body injury and then turn around next season having to rehab an upper because we didn't maintain that strength. Those are all things that very early on, the strength coach can take. It helps from a physiological healing standpoint. It also helps from a psychological standpoint to be back with their team and doing a lot of their normal activities. By maintaining my CSCS, by getting my CPSS, it's helped me to be able to speak the same language as those professionals, and then ultimately, get the best outcome for our student athletes.” 8:25“We can make sure the tissue can tolerate the load, and then as soon as possible, integrate it back in. So for us, it's very critical that we're working very early on with the strength and conditioning coach to make that transition.” 17:00“I always encourage students pursuing strength and conditioning coaching careers to do is to get into a training room, connect with members of the sports medicine team and profession. They may do that as athletes before they become a strength coach, but especially for those who maybe don't have a high-level athletic experience, connecting with sports medicine professionals is extremely valuable.” 20:20

ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 13 Episode 44 of the ParentingAces Podcast - our final episode of the Season! - a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, Lisa talks with Doctor of Physical Therapy and Strength & Conditioning Coach, Kait Ireland, about why a physical therapist should be part of a junior athlete's team. Kait is a soccer player turned strength & conditioning coach turned physical therapist. She has several degrees including both a Masters degree in Kinesiology (studying exercise & sports conditioning) & a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She's worked for many years as a strength & conditioning coach and completed internships at notable facilities like EXOS in Arizona and Cressey Sports Performance in Massachusetts where she worked with athletes from most sports and levels including the NFL, MBA, and NHL. Like many entrepreneurs, Kait went into physical therapy after feeling frustrated by the quality of care her strength & conditioning athletes were receiving from traditional physicians & physical therapists who just don't understand the unique demands of sports participation. She now runs Empowered Athletics PT in Laguna Niguel, CA, and also offers video consultations for those outside the area. In this episode, Kait discusses the important role a physical therapist plays in a junior athlete's development. At different stages, young athletes should have their basic movements analyzed by a professional who can intervene when something is askew. Kait explains how a physical therapist can work with the parents, player, coach, fitness trainer, sport psychologist, sports medicine doctor, and others to ensure healthy physical development and timely intervention when an injury or ailment pops up. You can find Kait on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/empoweredathleticspt/. You also reach her via email at Kait@EmpoweredAthleticsPT.com or phone/text at 949-584-7787. As elite physical training programs proliferate — with a slew of execs embracing the quest to stay as young and fit as possible — Equinox recently announced their own $40k longevity membership. We invite the company's former president, Sarah Robb O'Hagan, now CEO of fitness and coaching firm EXOS, to sit down with Rapid Response host Bob Safian and explain where this craze has come from, and where it's likely headed. O'Hagan also digs into the nexus between personal training regimens and workplace performance. She outlines what she calls a ‘pro-recovery culture' at work to avoid burnout — and why a four-day work week may be inevitable.Visit the Rapid Response website here: https://www.rapidresponseshow.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Wellness company, Exos, launched a four-day work week pilot program last year and decided to keep it after fantastic results six months later. Many want to know why more companies don't adopt four-day work week models. But the bigger question should be: why don't managers trust their team more to try new programs? We looked at a recent article and talked about it in length with career strategist, Julie Bauke. "If I have to wash and return your Tupperware, I am now super stressed. I am so worried about the Tupperware." Let the Boston Marathon episodes begin! First up: a panel I moderated at the Oofos pop-up on Boylston Street called "Project Pink: Recover with Purpose." This panel was about running, about cancer, about hard stuff, and about resilience. We heard from Anne Keane, who is living with metastatic breast cancer, and was about to run her third Boston Marathon as part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. Dr. Nancy Lin, the associate chief of breast oncology at Dana-Farber, talked about whether runners are the best or worst patients, and talked about where fundraising dollars actually go. Maureen Key, the senior manager of performance design at Exos, talked about the importance of recovery and mindfulness. And Christine St. Pierre, who has been doing the Pan-Mass Challenge for 18 years now as the captain of Team Duncan, was on hand to convince all of us that we can — and should — do whatever we set our minds to. Thank you to Oofos for having us, and for the longtime partnership and commitment to raising funds for breast cancer research. Stacy T. Sims, MSc, PhD, is a forward-thinking international exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist who aims to revolutionize exercise nutrition and performance for women. She has directed research programs focusing on female athlete health and performance and pushing the dogma to improve research on all women. During her tenure at Stanford, she had the opportunity to translate earlier research into consumer products and a science-based layperson's book (ROAR) written to explain sex differences in training and nutrition across the lifespan. Both the consumer products and the book challenged the existing dogma for women in exercise, nutrition, and health. This paradigm shift is the focus of her famous "Women Are Not Small Men” TEDx talk. Her contributions to the international research environment and the sports nutrition industry has established a new niche in sports nutrition; and established her reputation as the expert in sex differences in training, nutrition, and health. Stacy currently holds a Senior Research Associate position with SPRINZ- AUT University, supervises PhD students, writes academic papers, and is on the advisory board of some cutting edge companies including Tonal Strength Institute, WILD.AI, and EXOS. She also has her own business (www.drstacysims.com) where she creates and delivers online learning material focused on women training with their physiology across the lifespan. She currently resides at the beach in Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand with her husband and young daughter. Unreal Results for Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers
"Your body is your best friend." parting words from my friend and colleague Daniela Spear. Many people have a hard time both feeling and understanding this, especially those people who have autoimmune diseases. Often in the Western medicine community when someone is diagnosed with an autoimmune disease they are given the explanation that their body is "attacking" itself. It is easy to then understand why it does not resonate with best friend vibes. Daniela was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease when she was 15 years old and through learning about health and wellness and performance from her previous job as a strength (performance) coach at EXOS and through the MovementREV education realized that she was under-recovered and under-rested, which is different than the traditional concepts of over trained and overstressed. While practicing various methods of movement that supported rest and diving into how emotions played a role in her diagnosis and capacity to heal she learned how her symptoms were not something wrong with her, but ways her body was working for her, and responding to the information it was being provided. Join me as Daniela shares her journey of healing from autoimmune disease and getting a second chance at a life not only free from medication but truly feeling in EASE with life after dis-ease. We talk about the power of words, belief systems, the role her liver and liver-focused movement played in her healing, and how she can now offer support to others ready to be remade too. Exponential Organizations 2.0, by Peter Diamandis & Salim Ismail, is a new book - and a new book format - that offers valuable insights into how companies can achieve exponential growth and impact by leveraging the latest technologies. You can now talk directly with the book that generated $1B for Procter & Gamble using OpenExO's chatbot, AI-X. You can register for free for the Exponential Organizations 2.0 Launch Event on June 8th, 2023 at 8 am PST, which will give you access to this new book as well as the ability to watch a 3-hour webinar discussing specifics of these topics with the book's authors. In today's episode, Peter and Salim discuss the billion-dollar businesses of the next decade, focusing on the 11 attributes of ExOs laid out in the book. Not all ExOs exhibit all 11 attributes, but they all incorporate many of them. The first 10 attributes of an Exponential Organization can be divided into “outward facing” and “internally facing” traits. The first five, encapsulated by the acronym SCALE, are outward-facing attributes, and the second five, encapsulated by the acronym IDEAS, are internally-facing attributes.SCALE attributes:Massive Transformative Purpose (MTP)Staff on DemandCommunity and CrowdAlgorithms and AILeveraged AssetsIDEAS attributes:InterfacesDashboardsExperimentationAutonomySocial TechnologiesFor example, a company like Uber uses a gig economy platform to hire external workers on a per-project basis (Staff on Demand) and leverages social media to engage with and learn from a community of like-minded individuals (Community and Crowd), exhibiting SCALE attributes. Meanwhile, a company that encourages experimentation in all departments of the organization and allows individual employees or teams to operate independently and effectively (Autonomy), exhibits an IDEAS attribute. In addition to these, the eleventh attribute is a culture of experimentation. This attribute refers to the importance of constantly testing new ideas and approaches in order to stay ahead of the competition and discover new opportunities for growth. For example, Google's “20% time” policy allows employees to spend 20% of their time working on their own projects, which led to the creation of innovative products like Gmail and Google Maps. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to future-proof their organization and this interview will convince you why. After you listen, remember to register for free for the Exponential Organizations 2.0 Launch Event being held June 8th, 2023 at 8 am PST!------------What to write and publish a book in 30 days?
