Lost civilizations like Lemuria, Ys, Thule, Iram of the Pillars, and Agartha are fascinating tales that often blend myth and mystery. Lemuria, believed by some to have existed in the Indian or Pacific Ocean, is shrouded in legends of advanced beings. Ys, a mythical city submerged off the coast of Brittany, is said to have fallen due to a tragic love story. Thule, mentioned in ancient texts, is often associated with hyperborean regions and sometimes linked to Nordic mythology. Iram of the Pillars, mentioned in the Quran, is a lost city punished for its residents' arrogance. Agartha, a mythical underground realm, is part of esoteric beliefs suggesting a hidden world beneath the Earth's surface. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ever wondered what it would be like to cross America primarily on dirt roads? Andy and Mercedes Lilienthal let us ride shotgun on their extraordinary Transamerica Trail adventure – a jaw-dropping 7,100-mile journey with over 3,100 miles on unpaved terrain, all completed in just 29 days. The couple's modified 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness proved remarkably capable, conquering elevations approaching 13,000 feet in Colorado and withstanding temperatures ranging from freezing to a sweltering 111°F in Moab. Their detailed walkthrough of the vehicle's modifications reveals the thoughtful preparation behind such an ambitious journey – from the Thule rooftop tent and ARB awning to the critical Primitive Racing skid plates that protected vital components on rough terrain. What makes their story particularly compelling isn't just the vehicle specs or challenging routes – it's how this journey provided them a completely different perspective on America. Despite both having previously visited all 50 states, experiencing the country from rural backroads allowed them to discover unfamiliar wildlife, connect with locals in remote areas, and witness aspects of American life rarely seen from interstate highways. Perhaps most fittingly, they completed this epic adventure on their 21st wedding anniversary, proving their relationship is as durable as their remarkably capable Subaru. We also feature Don Armstrong's comprehensive review of the 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV, a sleek electric SUV with limousine-like comfort and impressive 615 horsepower performance. Don highlights its sharp exterior design, user-friendly 17-inch infotainment system, and competitive positioning in the premium electric SUV market at $44,600 for base models with the high-performance SS trim testing at $64,180.Subscribe to In Wheel Time for more fascinating automotive adventures, detailed vehicle reviews, and conversations with passionate car enthusiasts who push the boundaries of what's possible on four wheels.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. I'm taking you on a journey back in time to uncover the story behind how Iceland got its name. This tale involves three adventurous Norsemen who each left their mark on this rugged island, but only one name endured through history. The First Two Vikings That Tried to Name The Landmass To hear the whole story about the first two Vikings that named this country, I have included that in The Savvy Traveler's Guide to Iceland. I created The Savvy Traveler's Guide to Iceland, a comprehensive 8-module video guide that walks you through everything you need to know before visiting. I even have a whole module dedicated to Icelandic History in a Nutshell, where I talk about how Iceland was formed, settlement, the transition from paganism to Christianity, and tons more. Not only that, but when you get the guide, you'll have lifetime access, bonus itineraries to make planning easier, and access to my free and private Facebook group, where I share specially curated Iceland travel posts and do a live Q&A each month! If you want to feel completely confident and stress-free about your trip, you can check out The Savvy Traveler's Guide to Iceland The Viking That Named Iceland In 868 AD, a Viking named Flóki Vilgerðarson set sail from Norway with the full intention of settling in Iceland. He wasn't just any Viking—he was known as Hrafna-Flóki or “Raven Flóki.” He got this nickname because he brought three ravens with him to help navigate the open seas.Once he reached the Faroe Islands, Flóki released his ravens one by one. The first flew back toward the Faroes, the second circled and returned to the boat, and the third flew northwest and never came back. Flóki, believing this meant land was nearby, followed the third raven—and sure enough, he reached Iceland.Flóki and his companions settled in Vatnsfjörður in the Westfjords. The summer was warm and full of fish, so they focused all their efforts on fishing instead of preparing for the harsh winter ahead. When the cold finally set in, disaster struck. Without enough hay, all their livestock perished. By spring, they had no choice but to leave. Before departing, Flóki climbed a mountain and looked out over the fjords. He saw thick ice covering the waters and, in his frustration, named the land Ísland—Iceland. Unlike the previous names, this one stuck, and the island has been called Iceland ever since. A Viking's Regret & A Land of Opportunity What's fascinating is that when Flóki returned to Norway, he had nothing good to say about Iceland. He believed it was a harsh, uninhabitable land. However, one of his crew members, Thorólf, disagreed. He spread rumors that Iceland was so abundant that butter dripped from every blade of grass! This contrasting view sparked curiosity, and soon, more settlers followed, leading to the beginning of permanent Norse settlement in Iceland. Random Fact of the Episode Beyond the Viking Names: Ultima Thule & Nordic Identity Before Iceland had an official name, ancient Roman and Greek texts referred to mysterious lands in the far north as Ultima Thule, meaning “the farthest place beyond the known world.”In the Middle Ages, some maps labeled Iceland as Thule and Greenland as Ultima Thule. Interestingly, by the 19th century, people started associating Thule with Norway instead. While Iceland's name may have been given by a frustrated Viking, the settlers who followed developed a strong sense of identity as Íslendingar—people of Iceland. Despite their ties to the greater Nordic world, they wanted to maintain their distinct culture, which still thrives today. Icelandic Word of the Episode Áfram Ísland – Let's go Iceland! For our 126th episode, Radical Research travels to the farthest reaches of our favorite country and we do so with a rare companion, Agalloch lynchpin, John Haughm. In this episode, we dive into the discography of Thule, a progressive rock band that defies the rules of progressive rock. Dark, nocturnal, frozen, magical - Thule's seaborne prog offers the listener glimpses into forbidden worlds. We hope that this episode will seduce you into taking the risk that is well worth the reward. Note I:We were stoked as hell to have Agalloch's John Haughm with us for this episode. As such, we go on even more tangents than when we get up to that nonsense when left alone. So, tangents on Emperor, on Genesis, on ZZ Top, and on much more as we trawl the murky, exotic waters of Thule. Note II:The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Note III:All past Radical Research episodes can be found here, where you can also find Jeff's Peter Steele and Fates Warning books, Hunter's Deserts of Hex Volume 2…and more to come soon! Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener.
