In today's episode, we dive into an excerpt from the audiobook, Literacy's Democratic Roots by Tom Newkirk, which focuses on the powerful concept of funds of knowledge. This term coined by Luis Moll and his colleagues refers to the rich, culturally developed bodies of knowledge and skills that students bring from their home and communities. Through this body of research, Tom explores practical ways to integrate these funds of knowledge into your curriculum. You'll hear about real-life examples, such as how a sixth-grader's candy-selling experience was used to teach scientific concepts and nutritional values. These insights will inspire you to view your students' backgrounds as valuable assets that can enrich classroom learning.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We all have it. Whether we like the color red over blue, or like a sports car over an SUV, we all have preferences. It's what makes us unique. But when we make decisions about situations and personnel that are based purely on our perception (or, our bias) about what a woman "should do" or a man "should behave", we are treading into the turbulent waters of "implicit bias". My guest today is an expert in how gendered implicit bias impacts college athletics and higher education. Tom Newkirk, an attorney from Des Moines, Iowa, has successfully tried and won numerous cases and settlements for coaches and others on the issue of bias. He is a national trainer, providing workshops including: Des Moines Foundation: Bias Training Iowa CASA: Implicit Bias NAACP, Justice and Disparity: Implicit Racial Bias Labor and Employment: The Art of a Closing Argument in Employment Cases National NELA: Moving Implicit Bias Theory from The Classroom to The Courtroom

But over the years, fiction has fallen to the wayside in many classrooms.Tom set out to create Writing Unbound to show just how important fiction is and offer educators a roadmap to integrating it back into their teaching. To inform his thinking, Tom conducted 40 in-depth interviews with students and teachers around the country to learn about how they make space for fiction in their classrooms. But in schools, the focus is increasingly put on analytical writing. When did fiction writing fall to the side?Today on the Heinemann podcast we are rebroadcasting an episode that originally aired in 2019. In his new book, Writing Unbound, author Tom Newkirk explores the value of creating worlds through fiction writing. As Tom says, “our minds were made for stories,” so he decided to sit down with high school students to hear about the fiction they write in and out of school. Hello everyone! It has been said that middle school is where the love of reading goes to die… but not if Christina Hanson has anything to say about it! Christina, otherwise known as @Hansonhallway on Instagram, has a lot to say about how to get kids engaged with books. Under her deeply engrained philosophy of letting students read what they want and often in class, is solid pedological practice that includes reading a picture book a day, and being a reader herself. In this episode we dive into the daily routine, independent practice, and even question the value of Lexile and screeners.  If you feel like reading is dying in your class, or maybe on your campus. this is the episode for you.     This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, Writing Unbound: How Fiction Transforms Student Writers by Thomas Newkirk. Writing Unbound is about the value of writing fiction in secondary classrooms.  Tom Newkirk asks a tough question:  if reading fiction is the center of most English classrooms, why is writing fiction often ignored? Why do we separate fiction reading and fiction writing? Tom argues that when our writing curriculum is too analytical, students think of “writing” as impersonal, formulaic, and…well…boring. He says that opening a door to fiction writing can ignite students’ interest and convince them of the value of writing. He even argues that allowing kids to write fiction will improve their analytic writing. Learn more about how fiction can transform student writers.
