Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly columnWine has been a staple of food and culture for 8,000 years. It is not going away. But the wine industry's exhilarating days of the past 50 years are fading. Let's explore.Gino Colangelo is the founder of Colangelo & Partners, a leading PR force in the wine, food, and spirits industry worldwide. I asked him about the state of the wine world today.Gino ColangeloWhat are the biggest threats to the wine world?Gino: “Depends on the day of the week. Tariffs are looming. Economic uncertainty is certainly an issue. But I still see the anti-alcohol movement as the biggest existential threat. If a 25-year old today decides that health risk starts at one glass of wine/day, what does that do to the lifetime consumption of that person? We need to fight back hard against the misinformation and propaganda surrounding wine and health. That's why I started, together with esteemed wine writer Karen MacNeil and wine PR pro Kimberly Charles, two wine advocacy campaigns: Come Over October ( Link ) and Share & Pair Sundays ( Link ). Both campaigns will be annual. Creating a positive narrative around wine will take years.”Your wine elevator pitch?Gino: “Wine has a unique ability to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together. Wine is social, cultural, historical and sustainable. Wine is good economics for rural populations—farmers —around the world. And, ultimately, wine is food. It belongs on the dinner table.”Wine pricing?Gino: “I think there will always be a place for sub-$10 wine but Americans are appreciating better wines—which is a good thing. Most of our clients are at $15-$25. That seems to be a strong part of the market. There is a lot of trading down now from $50+, for example, among large segments of the wine drinking population. Besides, there's a world of very good and interesting wines at $15.”Wine trends?Gino: “I think rosé is trending down. Low/no-alcohol is certainly trending though there's much work to be done on the quality/taste front. Thousands of vineyard acres are being ripped up in California. I think this is an inevitable correction in the supply of wine grapes. ‘Natural wine' continues to trend among some demographics—though I still haven't heard a clear definition of the category. Movement away from 15 percent+ wines to more restrained styles is a positive trend, I would say. Also, interest in indigenous varieties, whether that's Saperavi from Georgia or Nero d'Avola from Sicily is still trending.”Last roundLet's eat kids. Let's eat, kids. Commas are important. Episode 2 - Dirt Simple Photo Gallery Dirt Simple Photo Gallery is the program that started me down the Plain Text Programs path. It predates my own thinking about Plain Text Programs by at least a decade. Ever since I wrote it I use it all the time. It is now my preferred web page generator for all kinds of web pages, not just galleries. Like most of my programs I wrote it because I needed it. Vivian and I were putting on music events like Blues Fest, Sunday In The Park, Jazz Thursday, New Jazz In Jonesboro, and Bebopalooza. I recorded all the shows. Sometimes video, always audio. And we loved taking pictures of the musicians singing and playing. After the shows we would dump the photo files to a hard drive, make all the original photos read only, and back them up to a CD or DVD. We really enjoyed scrolling through the photos, picking the ones we liked, cropping them and enhancing them, and resizing them for the internet. And then that's where it fell apart. We recorded the show. We took the pictures. We cropped the pictures and had them ready to go for our Delta Boogie website. And we didn't want to write the html. Some days we would have five or six bands playing. We usually had ten to twenty photos of each band that we picked out of hundreds of photos taken. Do the math. That's a lot of typing HTML code like a href =, img src, etc. A lot a captions to write. A lot of work to get done in a week. Because the next weekend we had another show. Another set of photos. Another bunch of html backlog. And the thing I found out. If we didn't get the pages posted right away we almost never had time to post them later. I mean we had kids to raise, cooking to do, cars to fix, school to attend, not to mention work. So, I loved writing programs more than I loved marking up html. And I could write one program and avoid marking up tons of html. And so I wrote the Dirt Simple Photo Gallery. Even back in the dark ages of the internet also known as the nineties there were photo gallery programs. And just like today they were cumbersome and running them was a lot like data entry. You know what I hate worse than writing html? Data entry. I had this idea. I would take all the photos we had ready for a gallery and I would upload them to a directory on our server. Then I would upload an index.php file and we'd have a photo gallery. And that's just how Dirt Simple Photo Gallery works. And if that's really all you need you're done. It wasn't quite all we needed. So I added a title.txt file and a notes.txt file so there could be a bit more than just the photos and captions on the web page. I was careful that I didn't have to write any html in the notes.txt file. The program even automatically turns copy and pasted links into hot links. Now, you can include html in the notes.txt file. You can even embed iframes if you want to include an audio or video player. But you don't have to. Also, iframe embeds are just a copy and paste exactly like links. Easy peasy. There's also the problem of the captions and the sort order of the photos. Captions I use the file names to carry the meta data required for captions and sort order. These are the characters I use in the file names. Alphanumeric, commas, apostrophes, dashes, and underscores. I don't use spaces but the underscores are converted to spaces in the captions. I use Thunar and I love the bulk rename option where I can search and replace a set of file names and change all the spaces into underscores. I have code that allows you to include special characters in your captions by using html character sets but it's confusing to think about. And I discovered the only special characters I really needed were dashes, commas, and apostrophes. All three of these characters are legal in file names on all major systems. Dashes are not problematic. Commas can cause problems if you are using comma delimited data but, I'm not, so no worries. Apostrophes can also be an issue because in php they are used as single quotes and can be used to delimit strings in the code. There is a way around this with php. Use double quotes to surround the entire string. If there is a place inside of that string where you would use single quotes, which is not uncommon in html, replace the single quotes with escaped double quotes, that is ". So that's what I did. So now I can use all the apostrophes I want in my file names and they fly right through my code, never accidentally truncating a string and throwing errors. Commas and apostrophes are important in captions. Captioning group shots without commas leads to misunderstanding people's names. And if your caption has a possessive in it like Joe's Garage leaving the apostrophe out is just wrong. Using double quotes in a file name will truncate strings in the php code and throw errors. Usually, anywhere you would want a double quote a single quote will do. There are other special characters, like dashes, that aren't problematic. Forward slashes and back slashes should not be used in file names ever. Some special characters may work on some systems and not on others. I've been using this program for almost 25 years and I really want commas and apostrophes and don't really care about other special characters in captions. You may have special needs for special characters I don't. That's why it's open source. If you need something the program isn't designed to provide test it. Fix it. Right now there are fewer than 100 lines of code in the program. I have confidence in you. Sorting Default sorting of images is alphabetical by file name. If you just name your files with good captions and don't add any numbers as a prefix that's what you'll get. Alphabetical by caption. This may be just what you need. If, however, you want some other sort order you can prefix your files with nnn- where n is any integer. 000-filename.ext displays the picture at the top of the page. If the photo is narrow enough, the text from notes.txt will wrap around it to the left. All the photos numbered 001- to 999- will display in a single column below the text. Unnumbered photos will also display below the text in alphabetical order. So if you want a photo at the top of the page add the prefix 000- to the file name. If alphabetical order is what you want for the rest of the photos you don't have to rename them. Permitted extensions are jpg, png, or gif. (It's hapeg stupid!) It's easy to add other permitted extensions in the code but, of course, they have to be rendered by a browser. I did not include the jpeg extension choosing to rename jpeg files to jpg. This made it slightly easier to code. There is a config.inc file where you can set your table width. The default is 700. I resize my photos to be 600 max width. I usually use jpg files with a quality level of 90. This reduces storage space and enables fast loading of images. The config.inc file also allows you to change background color, text color, link color, etc. There is also a CSS section in the config.inc file so you can change the font, the headline sizes, etc. Or add your own CSS. If you have trouble getting the text wraparound to look good on your page there is a way to disable it in the config.inc file. Install the page with ftp. Make a directory, where you want it on your website, and give it a good name. Upload index.php, title.txt, notes.txt, config.inc, and the image files into the directory. Go to your website and check it out. That's it. Page maintenance is the same. Fix captions by renaming files. Add and delete images. Update the title or the text in notes.txt and upload the changes. Change the font, colors, or CSS in config.inc and upload the changes. I have put up a demo site on infinityfree.com. And I am posting my show notes on my blog at https://home.gamerplus.org/ I will include links there to the demo site, the link to the comment thread for this podcast on Mastodon, and the link to the git repository on Codeberg. Brian Stokes Mitchell is a two-time Tony Award-winning actor who has always thought the universe chose him. Born on Halloween when “people dress up in costumes and pretend to be other people”, the stars have indeed decided. Aside from performing, he also writes, dances, produces his own music, and orchestrates, but out of all the things he can do, his best quality is being a really good student. He details his latest project, “HOPE”, realizing that sometimes creative works have their own timing - this video dropping exactly when we need to hear it the most. He presents a profound metaphor about life as a "long sentence" full of commas rather than periods, and what his “dead questions” are. With an upcoming role in “3 Summers of Lincoln” at the La Jolla Playhouse, he recounts how the project deeply resonated with him upon reading the script. Aside from all his projects, he always makes sure to give back to the community–from being chairman of the board for the Entertainment Community Fund for 19 years to providing entertainment from his balcony during the pandemic. Stokes shares how curiosity continues to motivate him, and why we should follow our heart in all our endeavors. Brian Stokes Mitchell is a two-time Tony Award-winning, Drama Desk Award-winning, and Outer Critics Award winning actor. He is renowned for his powerful baritone voice and dynamic stage presence with standout performances in Broadway productions like “Ragtime”, “Kiss Me, Kate”, “Man of La Mancha”, and “Shuffle Along”. He's become a celebrated figure in musical theater, but beyond Broadway, he has showcased his talent on television, including shows like “Vampirina”, “Wolverine”, “Billions”, “Mr. Robot”, and of course, “Trapper John, M. D.” He's also recognized for his philanthropic work, particularly for his 19 years of serving as chairman of the board for the Entertainment Community Fund, and is a member of the Theater Hall of Fame since 2016. The saying “it takes a village to raise a child” doesn't explicitly factor in how much that village will cost. The price of just “being Black” is expensive. And for many creatives, innovators, and entrepreneurs, the cost of growth and expansion is unaffordable. Although one of the brief responses to the murder of George Floyd was a slight uptick in public and private commitments, data reveals that funding to Black entrepreneurs still severely lagged in comparison to what white spaces received. Institutions gained a lot of clout and exposure being connected to the brand of Black activism and movement, but not that most have departed from their public promises, Black entrepreneurs seeking to build impactful ventures are lumped back into the traditional models of funding and support—which includes tokenizing and the VC quest for the next “unicorn” in tech and business. Former NYC Deputy Mayor and current CEO of Robin Hood Foundation, Richard Buery, Jr., challenges the From Chains to Links community to question whether these standards yield sustainable results, and how bridging imagination with capital interventions helps us build the villages we deserve

Check out AMMOAuthor Marketing Mastery through Optimization is the best option for indie authors to sell their books. Check it out here.Build BridgesHere's a real-life example of why we need to build many bridges to our readership. This week on Thursday evening, I was notified my Facebook Ad Account was restricted, shutting down my ads and preventing me to run any until the review is complete. The issue was caused by a glitch Facebook is experiencing. I won't bore you with the details, but the moral of the story is simple: I did nothing wrong, and yet, my business of selling books came to a screeching halt. And I'll be honest, for about three hours on Thursday night, I sulked, pouted, and licked my wounds. For me that looked like a few extra cans of Miller Lite and a Zelda, Breath of the Wild binge. If you know, you know. But enough about my woes, let's dive back into our discussion about libraries. And I'll start by sharing some great news. The 9 Lives of Marva DeLonghi sold 7 copies into the Nebraska Libraries System Oakland Branch this week. I donated one copy to the library and followed up to see how it was doing on loans. The librarian had read and enjoyed it, and it had remained checked out since so she bought seven copies for the local book club. You can imagine my excitement. All this happened because I prioritized quality first. So that's what we're going to talk about today. How do you ensure your book is high-quality enough to retain the readers you gain?Get Reviews by GivingI recently stumbled on a YouTuber who publishes unique reviews, but what's different about his channel is its approachability. It's vulgar. It's accessible. It's fun. Check it out: Thoughts Before REM.I'm excited that the channel is going to give a shoutout for my novel, and I'll get you a link when it's live.Next up, I got a book review from a former podcast guest, Jason Cheng, and you can read it in its entirety here. I struggled with many elements of the review, and did the unforgivable thing, sending a comprehensive rebuttal to him, in private. Do like I say, not like I do, in this regard. And it may be wise not to read reviews. Our health matters, and reviews tend to be bad for our health.TRBM is a Listener-supported publication. And if I am like other readers, the hesitancy I feel to read a book with a homemade cover may affect sales. But here is where things get interesting. Consider, libraries are peopled by employees who have masters degrees in library science. These people spend their entire days surrounded by books published by the Big Five publishing houses. That means librarians not only have a keen eye for cover art of a certain kind, but they'll be biased toward cover art that doesn't meet the standard they're used to seeing. Excepting librarians from your hometown and those you've made close relationships with, every pitch to get your book in the library will be happening electronically or over the phone, which means you have only the appearance of your book cover to make that first impression. Nothing you can do can change how a librarian will see your book cover. If the librarian thinks the book cover appears amateurish what are the chances your book ends up on those library shelves? So, if for no other reason than that you want to consider professionally designed but covers. But all the work you do on a book cover means nothing if the work you do inside the book doesn't merit readership. Pudding ProofI've lately been swapping reviews with authors on Twitter in an effort to get my reviews on Amazon higher. You'd be shocked by the number of authors I've read who lack proofreading. Run-on sentences abound. Commas are missed or out of place. Quotations are missing or out of place. Worse, you see authors who have had no developmental editing on their books, trying to sell them through Amazon. It may work for a while, but if you approach a library with a book like that you will have no chance of success. But why should you care about libraries? Remember last week how we talked about the number of libraries available to carry your books? Nearly 20,000 if you need a refresher. With a disciplined process and a good plan in place you could easily sell $200,000 or more worth of books to library's in just a week of time. Can you imagine the opportunities presented to you if your books were in that many libraries at that kind of volume? And first impressions matter for a lifetime. If you are able to get a book into libraries at scale, every future book you write will have a first impression that is positive and lasting. That means as quickly as you can write quality books you have a six-figure customer to buy quality books.Time To ReflectRight now if you're in a similar position to me in that you have a small income on your published work and few reviews, you may be wondering if it's worth spending several thousand dollars on your book, when that's money you might have to put on a credit card and pay interest charges to repay. The little Dave Ramsey on all our shoulders tells us debt is bad. But the little Dave Ramsey on all our shoulders is lying.Actually, Dave Ramsey in real life is lying. Mostly…If you have a problem with excessive debt it can be really great to do the Dave Ramsey thing, but once you've learned discipline with your money there are much smarter ways to control your finances. Enough said about that. This isn't a finance podcast. Though, sometimes I wonder if I should start one…Businesses Require InvestmentsThe point I'm making is that you want to spend money building a great book and I use the word build intentionally. This is art, but it is also business. Libraries expect good businesspeople to bring them high-quality products that have been designed for readers to experience the least friction. If you can do that, you have a great chance of adding a full-time revenue stream to your current income for every book you publish as well as tens of thousands of readers, because, look, I read from library's and many of you do as well, and how often have we fallen in love with an author and bought other books by them after checking one out from the library. Finally, remember that this is a strategy that works well for self published or traditionally published authors. If you went the traditional route you might not be thinking much about the design of your book because the publisher did it for you, but that doesn't mean you don't have to design professional materials around the package you pitch to libraries. That means getting yourself a professional email address. The days of using Gmail are finished. You now need an @authorname.com email. If that sounds intimidating, you can just go to ZOHO and set up one email address that will have a business name domain associated with it, and you'll pay nothing. When it comes time to begin pitching libraries to carry your books you'll want to make sure your pitch deck looks as professional as any business has ever looked. But now we're starting to move into topics for future weeks.Your homework for this week's library episode is to look at the books you have already published and reflect: are they professionally designed? Have you developed a cover that librarians will want on their shelves? Is the editing and proofreading of your manuscript at a professional level? Are you afraid to spend money? And if you are afraid to spend money publishing your books, ask why you expect to make money on something you didn't invest in.Until next week. Write hard, and think about investing in you.TRBM is a listener-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
