Silicon Valley Bank failed and it remains to be seen what unintended consequences we may have unleashed by bailing it out. What's clear, though, is that SVB's risk exposure could probably have been detected and its failure prevented, and SVB's richest, most powerful depositors tried to whip up a broader banking panic in order to build pressure on the government to save them from their poor decisions. They warned of everything up to civilizational collapse if the government didn't announce that they'd be held harmless. And they got exactly what they wanted, with no strings attached, no new regulation, no new legislation, no symbolic tax on their standing in public life. They've gone right back to pretending to be masters of the universe, and they grow seemingly more enthralled with fascist politics every day, as if the Democratic government didn't just bail them out. Economist Dean Baker joins host Brian Beutler to discuss the stakes of the bail out, and if economics can account for the moral hazard of caving to demands of extremely powerful political activists, openly allied with the political right, who threaten to break the system if they don't get their way.

Tech whizz, creator of award-winning social enterprise Stemettes, host of the Women Tech Charge podcast, and a familiar face off the telly thanks numerous Countdown appearances, Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon is a firm advocate for women and girls owning it in tech spaces. Her excellent new book, She's In CTRL: How Women Can Take Back Tech, aims to help more women and girls do just that. She got on the Zoom to talk to our Mick about why women are under-represented in tech, why it matters, and how we can all help change that – starting with ourselves. They chat gatekeepers and getting round them, herstories lost to history, why it's SO important that women and girls claim their rightful spaces in the world of technology, and how there's no such thing as being too full to learn. On episode 113 Mary Broadbent joins the hosts to talks about getting her start from the ground up as a merch tech/truck driver for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. This set Mary up to learn the Tour manager role. They discuss the respect level needed for merch techs and how they often are dismissed and overlooked as to what their skill sets actually are. Mary Broadbent is a Tour Manager, Production Manager, and Guitar-Backline Tech who's been in the music touring industry for 15+ years. She's tour managed for artists such as Clairo, The Mowglis, Magic Giant, The Staves, Loote, Wrabel, and production managed/stage-managed the festival Girlschool and She Rocks Awards 2018 & 2020. In 2015 she added Guitar-Backline teching to her skill-set working for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Against Me!, Plain White T's, and Tegan and Sara. She also had a chance to jump behind the board running FOH for Wrabel, but would still consider herself very much a novice when it comes to sound engineering. She serves as a TM/PM mainly but pulls double duty Tour Managing & Teching when tours require it. During the 'pause' in the touring industry she found work as a Covid Compliance Officer for the ABC/Disney Show REBEL, and adopted a corgi, named Covax both of which kept her pretty busy most of last year. She enters the summer of 2021 jumping back on-board guitar teching for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and Stage Managing for My Morning Jacket, and is hopeful and excited for everyone to get back to work and on the road. Finally there is an episode of The Lowdown Society featuring a tech. After almost a year of trying to be in the same place at the same time, we were able to make it happen. Teching for a bass legend for 15 years, Terry Welty has been heavily involved with the design of all the signature-model instruments, amps and pedals that bears Geezer's name. We get to hear details about amp design as well as theories on speaker builds. Terry is currently touring with the legendary band Foreigner, where he is responsible for Bass Player/Bandleader Jeff Pilson's rig. We get to hear about recent changes in Jeff's setup as well. Terry tells us stories of "learning while doing" that are both fun and inspirational. A wealth of knowledge and many lessons in this episode...and a few cocktails as well.
What do you do if your gun doesn't perform right? Maybe it's firing slower than usual, or maybe not at all!
In this episode I break down the process of becoming a man and the things a 23 year old has learned so far. Being raised by a single mom was kind of tough especially when it came to girls it i'm slowly starting to put the pieces together. But obviously woman isn't the only thing that goes with being a man it there are a lot of different parts. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-after-school-podcast/support

Real life celiac superhero, Priyanka Chugh, creator of the blog, The Adventures of Anti-Wheat Girl, joins us. Priyanka, currently in medical school, shares her challenges growing up with mostly asymptomatic celiac disease in a family with a celiac brother and non-celiac sister, leading to some unique challenges. Ironically, Priyanka's mother, Dr. Ritu Verma, happens to be one of the top pediatric gastroenterologists in the world. How often do we hear the sighs from students as soon as math is mentioned? It is not uncommon for students to disengage from math instruction and the reasons are many: they just don’t get it, they do not understand the why for their learning, or maybe they are inundated with worksheets - whatever the case, it is important we change strategies often to engage students and promote their learning and understanding of math. This is where technology opens up many possibilities. In today’s episode we will focus on technology resources for use in the math classroom - Extensions/Add-ons and Websites, the question feature in Google Classroom, and Google Forms. Resources EquatIO Workflow! Chrome extension insert mathematical symbols and expressions dictate mathematical formulas out loud and have EquatIO convert those to written expressions. GeoGebra interactive website and Chrome app graphing, drawing, transforming graphs and more. Easy to use Pattern Shapes Chrome app virtual block patterns manipulate to investigate symmetry, patterns, angles, and fractions. Number Rack (also known as Rekenrek) App found in chrome web store virtual learning space for students to explore grouping possibilities as well as a variety of addition and subtraction strategies. Eureka Math - small group rotations Open Middle website offers problems with the same beginning and same answer but the ‘middle’ is open students can solve in many different ways. We survived the cold! This week we take a look at Wattpad’s new plan to create a full-service publisher and “revolutionize” the media industry (lol), especially in light of further traditional imprint closures and consolidations. Then, we examine that bonkers New Yorker story about Dan Mallory, and discuss how and why some people in the publishing world are allowed to be eccentric liars and self-mythologizers while others never even get a chance to tell the truth. And a To Loon It May Concern at the end. Join us!

Past Tense, Part I. A growing gap between the haves and have-nots leads to a fractured society. In Star Trek's 2024, America has tucked away undesirables in Sanctuary Districts. Sisko explains that social problems had to reach a breaking point before the US began to address them. “Past Tense” was prophetic in its time, and it remains so today—just seven years from Gabriel Bell's famous stand. Professor Hanan Alexander, Haifa University, gives a talk for the Department of Education Public Seminar Series. Drawing on my new book Reimagining Liberal Education, I argue in this talk for a form of education in open, diverse, liberal democracies that eschews neutrality. Instead, educators need to enable students to embark on a quest for intelligent spirituality grounded in thick traditions with roots in strong transcendent values, while paying heed to pedagogies of difference that engage a variety of alternative perspectives in dialogue. To understand one's self requires engaging those whose views are different from one's own. But to genuinely encounter difference one must also acquire a deep understanding of the traditions to which one is heir or with which one chooses to affiliate. This philosophical position offers an account of school curriculum and moral and religious instruction that throws new light on the possibilities of a nuanced, rounded education for citizenship devoted to a modus vivendi for living together across deep difference in peace.

In her new book, Data-Informed Product Design, Pamela Pavliscak outlines a way to use data of all kinds to understand the relationship between people and technology. Generally speaking, big data is quantitative; it gives you the what, where, and when, while “thick data” provides the qualitative perspective—the how and the why. Up until now, there hasn't been much information on how to combine quantitative big data with qualitative thick data. That's where this report can help.
