Was Canadian professor Hassan Diab innocent or a scapegoat for France shul bombing?

For the last two months, listeners around the world have been hearing a deeply reported true-crime podcast investigation – the first of its kind – into the notorious Canadian case of a mild-mannered Ottawa sociology professor, Hassan Diab, who France recently convicted of being the terrorist who blew up Paris' historic Copernic Street synagogue in 1980. Although Diab has no intention of serving out that life sentence in a French prison for the murders of four victims, and the wounding of many others: the professor from Carleton University claims he is innocent, was nowhere near Paris, was never mixed up in terrorism and is the wrong man. And, despite already spending nearly 27 years under suspicion, including some locked behind bars or on tight bail conditions, Diab's fight to prove he's a scapegoat has now received some renewed support. The Canadaland _news platform has published a six-part series called “The Copernic Affair”. It raises serious questions into how French officials prosecuted the case, using incomplete or inadmissible evidence, a weak Canadian extradition system, and by France's historic need to bring someone, anyone, to justice for a terrorist attack that's deeply etched into their national memory. Diab's many supporters, including some Jewish Canadian leaders, regret how the man's life has been ruined, facing calls for him to be fired at work, and ongoing death threats to his family in Ottawa. On today's episode of _The CJN Daily, Ellin is joined by the two journalists behind the unique investigative series: Alex Atack is a senior audio producer, often for The Guardian, and Dana Ballout, an Emmy-award winning documentary producer, with bylines on This American Life, National Geographic/ Disney+, The Wall Street Journal and Al-Jazeera. They explore the treatment of mental health issues during World War II and the differences between psychology and psychiatry. They also discuss the RAF's lack of moral fibre policy and the stigma surrounding psychiatric casualties. The conversation touches on the comparison between the RAF and other services, such as the US Army Air Force, and the different approaches to mental health care. Jane, Mary and Dan explore the use of anaesthesia and the importance of sleep and rest in forward psychiatric units during World War II.The team delves into the lack of moral fibre policy (and the many myths surrounding it) and how post-war understanding was influenced by changing medical beliefs and veterans' hopes for recognition. The fear of being labelled lacking in moral fibre was a real threat for aircrews and was equated with cowardice. The impact of the policy may have been exaggerated, but it was an effective deterrent. The conversation also touches on the social constructs of mental health and the challenges of language and terminology.Further reading:Dr Dan Ellin's articles and MA thesis:https://t.co/v9q3hTwfgKhttps://t.co/k50xdX7mv6https://t.co/uimXeVoTg5Jane Gulliford Lowes https://www.justcuriousjane.com/lack-of-moral-fibre-part-2-origins/We've listed more titles in the transcript section of the show notes. Send us a textSupport the showPlease subscribe to Never Mind The Dambusters wherever you get your podcasts. The conversation also touches on the social constructs of mental health and the challenges of language and terminology.Further reading: Dr Dan Ellin https://t.co/v9q3hTwfgKJane Gulliford Lowes https://www.justcuriousjane.com/lack-of-moral-fibre-part-2-origins/We've listed more titles in the transcript section of the show notes. Send us a Text Message. Please subscribe to Never Mind The Dambusters wherever you get your podcasts. On the night of Aug. 12, Jews around the world will mark the holiday of Tisha b'Av, the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av. It's considered the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. On this date, it's believed the First Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC. And nearly 500 years later, Roman Emperor Titus and his legions destroyed the Second Temple, in 70 CE, to stop a successful ongoing Jewish military revolt. As we hold our breaths to see if—or when—Iran and Hezbollah decide to strike against the State of Israel, we thought it would be good to hear from one of Israel's leading philosophers during this dark time. Ellin Bessner is taking a two-week holiday starting today, so we're bringing you some of our favourite conversations instead. Here's Ellin's conversation with Yossi Klein Halevi, scholar, journalist and podcaster with the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. He visited Toronto earlier this year to speak about the impact of Oct. 7 on Jewish history. He also discusses the conception of LiveOne, the challenges faced during its public offering, and his vision for unifying the world through music. Tune in to hear valuable advice for entrepreneurs and learn how Robert's relentless work ethic has driven his success.Episode Outline[00:00:03] Introduction by Alex Quin and guest introductions by notable entrepreneurs.[00:01:30] Welcome and introduction of Robert Ellin.[00:02:00] Robert Ellin's background and early career.[00:06:45] Founding and vision of LiveOne Inc.[00:10:30] Challenges faced and strategies employed during the public offering.[00:15:20] Leveraging AI to enhance user experience.[00:20:45] Importance of partnerships and B2B deals.[00:25:10] Surviving and thriving through market adversities.[00:30:00] The role of music and technology in unifying the world.[00:35:15] Advice for entrepreneurs seeking funding.[00:40:00] Future of LiveOne and personal reflections by Robert Ellin.[00:45:00] Closing remarks and contact information.Wisdom NuggetsConception of LiveOne: Creating a Unified Music and Entertainment PlatformThe vision for LiveOne Inc. was born from Robert Ellin's desire to recreate the success of MTV by building a modern, unified platform dedicated to music and entertainment. Inspired by the lack of authentic music channels since MTV shifted focus, Robert aimed to merge audio and video content, providing a comprehensive digital experience. By acquiring Slacker Radio, LiveOne secured crucial partnerships with major record labels, setting the stage for its growth into a leading digital media company.Challenges and Public Offering: Navigating IPO Difficulties Taking LiveOne public was fraught with challenges, including the aftermath of the tragic Las Vegas shooting, which forced a delay in their IPO. Despite these setbacks, Robert's determination and strategic adjustments allowed the company to proceed with a public offering at a lower valuation. His ability to pivot and secure crucial investments highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability in navigating the complexities of the stock market.AI Integration: Enhancing User Experience with Advanced Technology LiveOne's integration of AI has been pivotal in enhancing user experience. By employing AI for language translation, the company makes content accessible to a global audience while maintaining the original voice of the creators. Additionally, AI-driven playlist creation and content curation allow LiveOne to offer highly personalized music experiences. This technological advancement not only improves user satisfaction but also streamlines operations, making content delivery more efficient.Importance of Partnerships: Leveraging Strategic B2B Collaborations Strategic partnerships have been crucial to LiveOne's growth. Collaborations with major players like Tesla and Facebook have significantly expanded LiveOne's reach and audience engagement. By offering unique content and technological solutions, LiveOne has secured partnerships that drive substantial traffic and revenue. These alliances illustrate the power of B2B relationships in scaling a business and achieving long-term success.Market Resilience: Thriving Through Economic Adversities Robert Ellin's approach to market resilience involves meticulous cost-cutting and strategic acquisitions. During economic downturns, LiveOne focused on reducing expenses and optimizing resources, ensuring the company could weather financial storms. Strategic acquisitions during these times not only expanded LiveOne's portfolio but also positioned the company for future growth. This resilience underscores the importance of financial prudence and strategic foresight.Power Quotes:"We win by outworking everyone." - Robert Ellin "Raise your money when the market's good, and buckle up when it's not." - Robert Ellin"As a digital marketer, I've been doing digital ads and SEO for fifteen years now." - Alex QuinMeet Our Guest: Twitter: [https://twitter.com/EllinRob]Connect With the Podcast Host Alex Quin:Instagram: [Alex Quin Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/alexquin)Twitter: [Alex Quin Twitter](https://twitter.com/mralexquin)LinkedIn: [Alex Quin LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/mralexquin)Website: [Alex Quin Website](https://alexquin.com)TikTok: [Alex Quin TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@mralexquin)Our CommunityInstagram: [Hustle Inspires Hustle Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/hustleinspireshustle)Twitter: [Hustle Inspires Hustle Twitter](https://twitter.com/HustleInspires)LinkedIn:[Hustle Inspires Hustle LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/company/hustle-inspires-hustle)Website: [Hustle Inspires Hustle](https://hustleinspireshustle.com)*This page may contain affiliate links or sponsored content. ‘Hate has been given a free rein in our streets': Hear highlights from Toronto's Pride of Israel solidarity rally

With the synagogue's shattered front glass windows still boarded up with plywood sheets and an emergency fundraiser underway to repair the damage, Toronto's century-old Pride of Israel congregation opened its doors to host a large community solidarity rally on the evening of July 31. More than a dozen federal, provincial and municipal politicians, as well as a senior Toronto police inspector, spoke to the crowd of 1,500 and pledged to work harder to stop the wave of antisemitic hate that began after Oct. 7, yet has intensified in recent weeks. Just in the past few days, there have been dozens of incidents of vandalism, graffiti and arson targeting Toronto-area institutions. So it was no surprise that tensions ran high at the solidarity rally, with organizers trying to prevent pro-Palestinian protesters from disturbing the event—while also keeping guests inside from being rude to the invited politicians… with varying degrees of success. On the The CJN Daily, hear the crowd boo during the remarks by Mayor Olivia Chow and Liberal MP Ya'ara Saks, hear from an uninvited pro-Palestinian Jewish protestor, Gur Tsabar, and from others speakers—including Ontario's Solicitor General Michael Kerzner; newly elected Conservative MP Don Stewart; Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, the prime minister's new special advisor on antisemitism; and Melissa Lantsman, deputy leader of the federal Conservative party—who pledged their solidarity and demanded that Jewish rights be protected. Long-buried Nazi atrocities, retold in Robert Rotenberg's new crime novel, have lessons for today

Author Robert Rotenberg never imagined that his newest police crime novel, written against the backdrop of European fascism, would come out at the same time that far-right political leaders are sweeping into office across the continent. Nor did he plan that What We Buried would be published in the aftermath of one of the most embarrassing moments in recent Canadian history, when lawmakers from all parties stood in the House of Commons last fall to give a standing ovation to an elderly guest who, it turned out, had been a former Nazi soldier. The incident shone a spotlight on Canada's troubled legacy of unapologetically allowing thousands of former enemy soldiers into the country, legally, after the Second World War. Rotenberg's newest novel, his seventh, is a departure from his trademark police procedural material based on real-life Toronto headlines. Instead, this story has a more international scope. It revolves around a true Nazi war crime that took place 80 years ago this month in Gubbio, a small hilltop town in Italy, where the Germans massacred 40 innocent civilians on June 22, 1944. Rotenberg joins The CJN Daily to talk about why he's hoping the book resonates with readers in Canada, where Jewish groups have long felt the country's never really come clean about its dark legacy of allowing Nazi soldiers to make new lives here. Ellin Bessner, host of The CJN Daily _podcast, was admittedly nervous ahead of Sunday's 55th annual Walk with Israel, held by UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. For weeks, pro-Palestinian protest groups in the city had been threatening to disrupt the important Jewish solidarity march—the first one since the deadly Hamas attack on Oct. 7. It was stunning watching the record turnout of an estimated 50,000 people—and also seeing the massive police presence that kept a lid on trouble. But by the time Bessner and her family completed the nearly five-kilometre walk on June 9, her anxiety over the Middle Eastern war and rampant domestic antisemitism fell to the wayside and joy took over, even if only for a short time. On today's special feature episode of _The CJN Daily, Ellin invites listeners to join her on the walk and meet some of the people she met along the way: Israeli visitors Rami and Vered Gold, who survived the Hamas massacre at Kibbutz Be'eri; Michael Gilmore of Kehillat Shaarei Torah, the Toronto synagogue targeted by two recent hate crime attacks; Dave Fingrut, a public school teacher in Millbrook, Ontario; Noah Shack, UJA's head of combating antisemitism, and others. Just hours before Hamas' attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 the Israeli film star Swell Ariel Or was in Canada as the guest of honour at an Israel Bonds fundraiser. The twenty-something actor was fresh off her breakout role in the Israeli historical family saga “The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem” which aired on Netflix in 2022. She portrayed Luna Ermoza, the fashion-designer daughter of a Sephardic Jewish family living in pre-1948 Jerusalem. The actor did a sit down interview with The CJN Daily while she was in Toronto, although neither she or we could have predicted that the world would change just hours after her Canadian appearance. Post Oct. 7., Or immediately threw herself into volunteering to help Israeli soldiers. However, recently she's been back on set again with one of the producers of “Beauty Queen”, but it's not Season 3. This new series will be called “Handles”–about survivors of Oct. 7. With tonight being the eve of Jerusalem Day, or Yom Yerushalayim—a national holiday in Israel celebrating the country's recapturing of the Old City of Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967—we're now bringing you this interview with Or, in which she discusses what it was like filming Beauty Queen and why she moved to Hollywood, as well as a follow-up interview conducted after the life-changing events of Oct. 7. With over 41,000 members and counting, the Everything Jewish Toronto Facebook group has found itself serving as an unofficial online public square for Canada's largest Jewish community. The group was created a decade ago by two Toronto sisters–Jennifer Stallman and Brittney Waxman Sultan–as a vehicle to promote Jewish businesses, for a fee, to a Jewish audience. It has since morphed into a popular online space where Jewish people who aren't necessarily members of a synagogue or of other formal Jewish organizations, could connect: find a hairdresser, book a lawyer or even rent an apartment. But since Oct. 7, Everything Jewish Toronto has exploded with hundreds of posts per day from members reporting on the Israel-Hamas war, on efforts to free the hostages, and updating when they encounter instances of antisemitism, boycotts, vandalism and threats as a result of the anti-Israel protests happening in Toronto-area schools, hospitals, stores and especially on the streets. So who is behind Everything Jewish Toronto? How do they decide who can join, who can post, and how do they keep the level of discourse civil in a space that can often be flooded with online trolls and hate?
