Great questioning in the classroom (and beyond) promotes deep thinking, helping students connect and elaborate on ideas. Great questioning to assess thinking helps teachers plan and adapt their teaching to respond to what assessment tells them. Teachers ask questions every lesson, every day - so it's important to make sure that teachers and students are asking the right questions to move learning forward. Kate Jones, Senior Associate for Teaching and Learning, interviews teacher, senior leader and author Michael Chiles about questioning in the classroom – Dimension 4, Element 4.3 of the Model for Great Teaching. In this episode: Michael explains why questioning hasn't always received the attention and focus it deserves but why it should be a priority for all teachers and schools. Mini white boards and cold calling techniques are explored, as well as discussing the role of ‘hands up' questioning strategies in the classroom. The purpose of questioning is explored. Michael offers advice about the design, use and implementation of multiple choice questions and how the data provided can be insightful and helpful for teachers. Question design and delivery is discussed, both written and oral. Kate asks Michael, how carefully should teachers plan the questions they ask in class. Finally, how can teachers support students to encourage reluctant learners to participate and ask questions in the lesson. To enhance your use of questioning, look out for Michael's book and check out the Great Teaching Toolkit Questioning course. All of our podcasts, including our previous interview with Michael on feedback, can be found in our podcast archive, and we have a host of free eBooks, videos and webinars for you in our Resource Library.

For many parents, the pandemic has brought into sharp focus the role of teachers, and just how much work they do. Not only are teachers expected to teach their core subjects, but supervise lunchtimes and after-school activities, support students' mental health, and complete a large amount of administration work – and that's just the tip of the iceberg. For our latest report, Making time for great teaching, our staff surveyed more than 5000 Australian teachers and school leaders, about the impact of these responsibilities on teachers' time. The results are dramatic – and here to dig into what they mean for education in Australia, are the authors of the report: Program Director Jordana Hunter, Deputy Program Director Julie Sonnemann, and Associate Rebecca Joiner. Hosted by Kat Clay, Head of Digital Communications. Read the report: https://grattan.edu.au/report/making-time-for-great-teaching-how-better-government-policy-can-help
RUSH: Okay, now you people know, you are well aware one of the reasons you listen is I know liberals. I know them. I know them like every square inch of my gloriously naked body. Dealing with liberals is like dealing with a one-armed lunatic. They're just gonna keep swinging. They're gonna keep fighting no matter what you do. They never go away. And I know what they're gonna do and why they're gonna do it before they do it, and people marvel at this. We have an opportunity now because of the utterance of Elizabeth Warren, she's running against Scott Brown for the United States Senate in Massachusetts. This was a seat that was at one time held by Senator Kennedy. She is the presumptive Democrat challenger. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
What do great teachers have in common? How can we have a lasting, positive impact on our students, colleagues and friends? Educational Arranger, Mac Huff, is a classically trained pianist who found his niche in arranging pop and broadway songs for choral ensembles, and he owes his success to the people who have been highly influential in his life, starting with his father, Mac Huff Sr., a famous barber shopper and world-class coach and presenter. This episode is full of stories that inspire and educate, that teach us what it means to be a great teacher, and how we pass invaluable gifts from one generation to the next.
