John Sears sits in for Murph, An Awkward Champ Week, and More - Friday Hour 1
OWC RADiO host, Cirina Catania, sits down with filmmaker John McDonald about his ten-year journey to film his latest documentary, "Call Me Mule," the story of a man named John Sears, nicknamed "Mule," who has lived a nomadic lifestyle for the past thirty years, traveling across the country with his three mules in tow. Living in harmony with nature, enjoying this beautiful United States on foot, and advocating against our country's dependence on motorized transportation and urban sprawl, Mule finds his simple way of life threatened by those determined to uphold the establishment. Despite his many confrontations with law enforcement, he and his mules refuse to give up. "Call Me Mule" is a fascinating story about a man and his mules, living his life exactly as he wants without concern for modern conveniences. He doesn't need them. John McDonald's documentary has been accepted to many festivals around the world and has won Official Selection and Audience awards. Data science and analytics play an ever-increasing and critical role in sports creating an intersection between data and sports. From making some sports safer, to understanding the performance and tactics of opposing teams, and individual player analysis and scouting, there's hardly an area of sports today that doesn't intersect in some way with technology and data. So, how do all the puzzle pieces fit? That was the burning question on Adam Morrisey's mind. For answers, he sought out a rising sports analytics guru, John Sears. Over a relatively short period, John has made his mark in quantitative analysis, working for HBO's streaming platform, a nearly three-year stint in predictive analytics at Uber, heading quantitative strategy for the Minnesota Timberwolves, and currently serving as a Special Advisor for the Los Angeles Dodgers.Sears joined Morrisey for a lively discussion on Tuesdays with Morrisey on connecting those dots to bring today's sports into strategic view. And strategy starts with oneself; as Sears said, much thought goes into the decision process behind the positions he takes and the value he can bring to an organization. Often, those decisions went beyond salary.“You can't just straight-line every salary for the rest of your life,” Sears said. “It's the experience. There's so much more to it than my earnings over the next two years.”Morrisey and Sears discuss the intersection between data further…● The sports industry's evolving approach to the role of data● Breaking down data and looking for the proper signal to predict performance● How evaluating data is different depending on the sport● Upcoming data analytics technology“These last two or three years, there's this massive wave of what they call generative models of AI,” Sears said. “For example, I still spend a few hours daily writing and looking at code. And I'll have a text editor with a plugin called code pilot. It suggests big chunks of code by guessing what I'm trying to do based on how I start writing. It's eliminated most of the tedious aspects of writing code.”Uber, The Minnesota Timberwolves, KeepTruckin, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are a few big-name organizations John Sears has worked for since graduating Magna Cum Laude from Carleton College in 2009. Sears earned his MS from Stanford University in 2015; He is a quantitative analysis force of nature.

Will Sellenraad has earned a fast growing reputation of being at the forefront of creative musicians working in New York City. Known for his brilliant improvisations and his compelling, melodic compositions, this New York City native melds the various styles, phrasings and concepts of the jazz idiom with the raw elements of soul, rock and funk, to create a singular sound that is nothing short of inspiring. We talked to Will about growing up in downtown New York City in the 1980s, how his journey to and through Goddard started his musical journey towards jazz. “I was really into blues…that's where all jazz musicians should start anyway.” Despite enjoying the respite in rural Vermont, he learned that to do what he wanted to do musically, he would have to return to New York. After graduating from the New School, Will talks about entering the jazz scene in the 1990s through a happy hour gig, how the pandemic has affected the scene and what he hopes it looks like when it comes back. Will is dedicated to the craft of music and the discipline of practice, “I have no business calling what I do art, I mean that's for somebody else to say. All I can do is work on my craft and try to get better.” Deko Music released his album Star Hustler in February 2021 and will release Balance in April 2021. After a brief hiatus, I return this week with a great chat to my friend and fellow actor, John Sears. John spent the first part of his adult life in teaching which he loved. However, the itch to 'tread the boards' was ready to be scratched. At 58 he started his full time acting career. John's story is a fascinating one which takes us through university in the 60's to time spent in Africa, his teacher training then finally to going into acting full time. He talks candidly about the difference in how one might have dealt with being gay and coming out in a time before homosexuality was legalised. John's story is an inspirational one and it shows how it is never too late to follow a dream and change life's narrative. John is currently appearing in 'The Castle' by Howard Barker at https://space.org.uk/event/the-castle/ Please enjoy and share! https://www.facebook.com/john.sears.90
