BOB'S BEST BUYS Valentine's Day Selection Wine: Pegasus Bay Gewurztraminer 2024 North Canterbury, $30 Why I chose it: Gewurztraminer is an aromatic wine with punchy aromas that often resemble flowers (in this case rose petals). National Lamb Day Selection Wine: Trinity Hill 2021 The Gimblett, Hawke's Bay, $39.99 Why I chose it: It's NZ Lamb Day today and I wanted to choose a wine that would make a great match with lamb. Lamb is high in fat, which makes it a high flavour meat. Cabernet Sauvignon is a thick-skinned red grape that is also high in flavour making it a perfect partner for lamb. Trinity Hill 2021 The Gimblett is a blend of Cabernet Franc 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 46%, and Petit Verdot 4%. The wine even has a subtle minty character which gives it a built-in mint sauce-like component that's perfect for lamb. What does it taste like? Dense, intense red with cassis/dark berry, chocolate/mocha, vanilla, cigar box, and spicy oak flavours with a touch of mint. Approachable now with good ageing potential. A powerhouse red that was built to enhance the flavours of NZ lamb. It's from the Gimblett Gravels, a premium red-wine region in Hawke's Bay, Where can you buy it? Whisky and More, Waikato, $34 Liquor Legends, Auckland $34 The Good Wine Co, Auckland $35.99 Will it keep? Yes, with careful storage this wine will still deliver pleasure after 5-10 years or more LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Syrah might offer a quick return on investment in New Zealand but it may just be another grape that puts New Zealand on the world wine map in the future. In this episode the Wine Thieves are in conversation with Kate Radburnd of Radburn Cellars and Warren Gibson of Trinity Hill, two of New Zealand's top syrah producers, as they attempt to unlock the secret of this dynamic grape variety that is anything but sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir. Syrah is grown throughout the country from Waiheke Island to Central Otago but its homeland is firmly in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand's oldest growing region and second-largest after Marlborough. This red grape territory features several subregions, including the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle, which are emerging as hotspots for distinctive syrah. The Thieves investigate Busby, mass selection and Hermitage clones, and growing and winemaking practices that are helping to shape a singular New Zealand style. Sara gets a little sidetracked by Hawke's Bay's potent rotundone but John brings her back with facts and figures related to syrah's commercial viability. Join us on the ancient path of the Ngaruroro river, glass of syrah in hand.

The WinePod met Warren Gibson recently for a podcast chat with a view to understanding how his wines at Trinity Hill are among the most awarded in the world. Trinity Hill is a modern winery situated on the North Island of New Zealand in Hawkes Bay. Their vineyards are planted on the unique soils found on the Gimblett Gravels - reckoned to be New Zealand's premier red wine region. In their own words Trinity Hill has a, 'philosophy of "Quality rather than Quantity" ... controlled yields ensure the intensity of flavour and elegant styles for which Trinity Hill is renowned'. This is a fascinating podcast. We learned all about the brilliance of the Gimblett Gravels and even had time to taste Warren's Icon wine 'Homage'. Fabulous! Where I discovered it: My tasting notes for this wine go back to the 2005 vintage. It’s a consistently good red from a winery that has a great reputation for their high quality red wines. They’ve just released the 2015 vintage, which is a terrific wine, but you can still buy the 2014, an even better vintage that has the benefit of an extra year in the bottle. It’s an intriguing Merlot dominant red with other varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Malbec and Tempranillo What does it taste like? The younger 2015 is a medium-bodied red with chocolate/mocha, plum and spicy oak flavours. It’s quite a rich and fleshy red in deliciously drink-me-now style. The 2014 is slightly gutsier and a little more full-bodied with dark berry and spice flavours. It’s a hard call but I marginally prefer the older wine. I guess a little extra bottle age has made it more mellow and added extra layers of flavour. Why it’s a bargain:They are both good, honest, well made reds which, at around $20, are bargain buys in my book. Where you can buy it: The 2015 vintage has only recently been released. I could only find it available at the Trinity Hill winery for $22.99 but it will increasingly appear on wine shop shelves as the previous vintage sells out.You can buy the 2014 vintage “The Trinity” now at Fine Wine Delivery Company in Auckland for $19.99 or at Glengarry Wines in Auckland for $20.99. Both retailers sell their wine online although they may charge a delivery fee. Food match: I like The Trinity with hearty stews and casseroles but it is a good match with most red meat dishes. Lamb shanks is another favourite of mine. ill it keep? Both vintages offer pretty good drinking now but both will probably become a little smoother and mellower over the next couple of years.Bob’s website is http://bobcampbell.nz/
