What I didn't expect when we first logged into Riverside.fm for the podcast...was his opening remarks. "I am a bit bi-polar, dyslexic, a recovering alcoholic, and diagnosed with ADHD." and my response was "Is that it?" Then that turned into what I expect to be a series of episodes because forty-five minutes just ain't enough time. In this engaging episode of "Wine Talks," I sit with Tim Hanni, a Master of Wine, to delve into the fascinating world of wine. Tim reveals historical insights, such as the original negative meaning of "terroir," and explains how wine education often overlooks the diverse perceptions and preferences of consumers. Tim shares his unconventional path to becoming a Master of Wine, highlighting his personal challenges with dyslexia and alcoholism. The conversation shifts to address the wine industry's failure to adapt to modern consumers, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of sensory individualism and adaptive marketing strategies. Tim critiques the industry's elitism and disconnect from wine's rich history, pointing out that even acclaimed wines like those from Bordeaux were traditionally sweet. This episode is a thought-provoking critique of the wine world, stressing the importance of embracing diversity in wine perceptions and learning. The term "terroir" originally had a negative connotation, referring to "soiled wine" which was of poor quality, much like soiled diapers. Tim Hanni, the guest of the podcast, is a Master of Wine who became one of the first two Americans to earn this prestigious title, despite having dyslexia, ADHD, and being a recovering alcoholic. Master Sommelier and Master of Wine programs differ substantially, with the latter focusing more on the business and science aspects of wine rather than purely service. Historically, French champagne was incredibly sweet, sometimes even sweeter than Coca Cola, challenging modern perceptions of what "fine" wine should be. Have at it folks...this really is some crazy stuff.

When I saw ske with Susan to see what we might talk about, I was taken by her passion to share her life's pursuits: WIne and music. After speaking for just a few minutes, the connection between the two was clear. Then I remembered an study done by the Bose corporation...she was inspired to hear more...as was I. In this episode of Wine Talks with Paul K, Susan Lin, a Master of Wine and Master of Fine Arts, shares her unique journey and insights into the intersection of wine and music. She reveals how her early exposure to wine by her grandfather ignited her passion for learning about it. The episode delves into her intriguing research on how music can affect the sensory perception of wine. Susan explains that different genres and tempos of music can alter the perceived taste and quality of the same wine. Her experiments showed that wine paired with classical music was rated higher in attributes like freshness and effervescence compared to when tasted in silence. Furthermore, the episode touches upon her academic achievements and the challenges faced while writing her thesis during the lockdown. I discuss with Susan the broader implications of this research for wine marketing and consumer experience, emphasizing the emotional and cultural aspects of enjoying wine. Dense interactions also touch on the global wine market, sustainability, and the industry's perceived pace of innovation, with Susan offering positive insights into the evolving world of wine.

Rhys Pender - Master of Wine/Little Farm Winery  (Similkameen) Kathy Malone - Winemaker at Hillside Estate  (Naramata Bench)   There are so many elements in play during the 2025 BC wine-growing season. AND it's just started. Two cold snaps that damaged or killed many vines and vineyards over the past two Winters. It caused many growers to consider planting more winter-proof varietals and adjusting vineyard locations. Then came news that an agreement had been reached between Wine Growers of BC and the BC provincial government. While the new plantings were taking hold, in order to help farming families survive, for one year BC wineries could source their grapes from out of the province. Many headed for Washington. Some to Oregon, California, Ontario, the Frazer Valley and Vancouver Island.  The last two BC wine regions were not hit by the cold. Some wineries flatly refused to use non-BC fruit.   Soon, we'll all start to see labels that say something like  "Washington grapes crafted in BC"! Have fun tasting the blends and varietals that we've never seen or tasted here before. You're supporting BC farmers and wineries at the same time. On Tasting Room Radio and this Podcast, we'll be doing a series of specials on how various wineries and growers have committed to survive and thrive.  Who knows what their new direction may be. There's no denying it - BC Wines will be changing but there will be wines!!!   Enjoy the conversation between myself and Master of Wine Rhys Pender and Winemaker at Hillside Estate on the Naramata Bench Kathy Malone.     www.hillsidewinery.ca www.wineplus.ca www.littlefarmwinery.ca

Vineyards were damaged or destroyed by the freeze. Wineries and growers were facing a 2025 with little or no wines to cellar and sell. The Wine Industry and Government leadership came up with a plan to allow BC Wineries to harvest next year's fruit this year in Washington, Oregon, California, Ontario and The Cowichan Valley. As long as the label states "Crafted in BC" and the process is transparent. Will BC wine fans buy their favourite labels if the fruit comes from another region? If they like the new juice, will they still embrace their original BC wines? What gets replanted, and what new varietals will we see growing in the new BC? So much to consider. Nick shares his personal journey to becoming a Master of Wine and the pivotal moment when he realized the importance of focusing on a wine's structure rather than just its flavors.Nick's wine career began at the University of Cambridge, where he was a member of the successful Cambridge University blind wine tasting team. After earning a PhD in Theology, he worked as an auction specialist at Sotheby's in London and later as a buyer for Sotheby's Wine retail store in New York. In 2018, Nick left Sotheby's to start his own fine wine advisory business, Vintage Variation LLC, where he advises private clients, retailers, and other wine businesses. In "Beyond Flavour," Nick delves into the concept of tasting wines based on their structure and texture, rather than relying solely on flavors. He argues that assessing a wine's acid structure for whites and tannin structure for reds is a more reliable indicator of a wine's identity, especially as producers and regions continue to push the boundaries of traditional winemaking. Nick shares insights on how to navigate the nuances of tannin profiles in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, as well as the challenges of distinguishing Chardonnay and Riesling from specific regions. There can only be one explanation (maybe two) for someone to want, study, test and pass both the Master of Wine curriculm and the Master Sommelier curriculm. So rare it is that there are only 3 people in the world that have done it. One reason could be the pure academia of them; the study, the knowledge, the challenge to learn more. And another reason is the passion for wine. For David, it is a lot of both. He is clear, articulate and funny...and maybe a little crazy; after all this study and understanding of the wine industry, he goes off and starts a winery in Walla Walla Washington. Who does this? But you will here the commitment and passion it takes to do this very thing. Wine Talks is proud to have tracked him down in Washington as they are preparing for harvest. He is so committed that it took exactly 2 days for him to indoctrinate his then new wife into the trade. Max and his wifer represent an area of Italian wine that is growing in popularity and fascinating to discover: Friuli. That arching piece of land that connects Italy with Slovenia and sits at the base of the Dolomites, produces an amazing array of wines without deference to their original origin.  You can taste light hearted Pinot Grigio with character or a robust Cabernet Franc in the same sitting. The Master of Wine Diploma out of London is probably the most rigorous of certifications to acquire. It took Nova 8 years of study, frustration and tasting to get it done; and that was only after she failed out the first time around. Yes, you can spend 6 years going through the program and if you don't hit certain milestones during the final testing, it is like the kids board game Shoots and Ladders...back to the beginning.  An MW that saw the potential in Noca Cadamarte, pulled her aside to inspire and console her at the same time. Elizabeth (Liz) Gabay, Master of Wine, is the world's foremost expert on rosé and a big part of her career has been studying, writing about, and understanding rosé. Ben Bernheim, her son, is now learning from her wisdom and and is a specialist in his own right. The two of them have just completed the excellent book “Rosés of Southern France” (which is now available on Amazon for purchase. Liz is largely responsible for shifting the tide on rosé and helping people to understand that this wine is its own serious category that deserves thought, study, and consideration. In addition to the new book, Liz is the author of “Rosé: Understanding the Pink Wine Revolution,” and she is also a contributor on rosé in Decanter, The Drinks Business, The Buyer, SevenFiftyDaily, Meiningers, and many more prestigious publications. Photo: https://www.elizabethgabay.com/about/   The wisdom these Liz and Ben have on the subject of rosé is vast, and they are so fun, engaging, and real, that they make it all so interesting and accessible. This is an incredible education on rosé and will enjoy every minute of listening to these fantastic humans. Photo: Ben Bernheim, taken by me when we were partners in a Beaumes de Venise mini-class in the Rhone Valley 4/22 Here are the things we discuss in the show: Liz talks about her background and how she got into wine. She discusses how, when she took the MW, it was a professional certification, and how it has changed dramatically over time. She discusses how she got into rosé, and how Ben got involved in it as well. Then we get into the nuts and bolts of rosé Liz and Ben define rosé (harder than you think!). We discuss he book's intro and what rosé is really about: “We love rosé. We love its diversity, its complexity, and the infinite combinations of terroir, grape variety, vintage variation and winemaking that we find around the world. Many people think we're crazy. They see rosé as a pale pink lightly alcoholic swimming pool tipple that somehow tastes better if you're wearing a bikini. That isn't what this book is about. “ Photo credit: Canva Liz and Ben tell us about rosé winegrowing: Grapes that are commonly used(red AND white!) The role of terroir in rosé The picking decisions and harvest parameters that matter in making rosé Climate change and how it is affecting grapes for rosé We talk next about rosé winemaking We discuss the various ways to make rosé – direct press, limited maceration and saignée We talk about some of the key factors in rosé winemaking: Time on the skin Yeast strains Co-fermenting with whites Fermentation vessel (oak v. stainless) Temperature control in fermentation Malolactic fermentation vs. no MLF Aging/storage vessel and time – oak, cement, glass, amphora, etc Photo credit: Canva  Liz and Ben tell us why rosé, can be ageworthy and why most isn't. We also talk about lightstrike and why clear bottles are the worst thing for rosé.   We cover the wines of the southern Rhône -- Tavel, Luberon, Ventoux, the rosés of Provence and Bandol and the wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon. We have an interesting conversation about Costieres di Nimes, which really drives home how certain regions can be outstanding but if they don't send in samples to writers, or market their wines, they remain unknown.   Liz and Ben help us understand how to buy better rosé. They provide some shortcuts for finding better wines – like looking for sub regions in Cotes de Provence such as Ste. Victoire and La Londe. We talk about how using Google maps to see where the winery is located can help you get better wines (e.g., If it's in a cool mountain area, it may be crisp, if it's nearer the ocean the wine may be fatter). They discuss how essential it is to find out about the producer, since often producers want you to see the name “Provence” and buy the bottle…if you poke around a bit you may get a better idea about what you are getting so it's not a surprise or disappointment   Liz and Ben tell us about the trends in rosé – why it has become so popular, and what are great regions we should keep an eye on. Liz's recommendations for countries/regions that have been making intresteing rosé (besides France!): Austria, Greece, Sicily (Etna especially), Spain (Clarete from Sigales, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Navarra), Portugal (Douro, pink Port), Israel.   We end with a conversation on the future of rosé and what Ben and Liz hope for the category.   This is a fantastic conversation about a category of wine that is experiencing a big paradigm shift. Liz and Ben are some of the most normal, kindest, smartest people I've met in wine in a long, long while and the show is sprinkled with a ton of industry information – insider things that can help shed light on what goes on with producers, negociants, and writers.  I hope you enjoy and you are motivated to buy their wonderful book!
