**TRIGGER WARNING** Eating Disorders This week on the podcast I discuss the topic of Eating Disorder and Diabulimia with my new friends Edie and Ronan. Edie is our Type 1 this week and was recently made an ambassador for the Eating Disorders Association of Northern Ireland before realizing she had gone through Diabulimia as a teenager while attending boarding school. Ronan is Edie's Partner and our Type None for this conversation and was there during Edie's realization of her experience with Diabulimia. Ronana tells us about the perspective he gained on his own mental health through helping Edie through hers. It's a serious episode for sure but a hopeful one nonetheless. Oh hey Type 1s and Nones! Diabetes Awareness Month might be over but that doesn't mean there aren't still more Diabetes conversations to be had. And this week on Ask Me About My Type 1 we're busting the oldest of Type 1 Myths because it's about time someone did (again)! We're talking about the old betes adage, "You can do anything with Diabetes!". And to help me talk about how true this statement IS NOT, I have with me Abbie and Anna. Abbie is our Type 1 guest for a second time this month and tells us more about how Type 1 kept her from the career in music that she had grown up dreaming of. In the Type None seat this week is Abbie's friend from college Anna who joins us as an artist currently pursuing a career in music to tell us the truth about how difficult it is to make it in the music industry even when you don't have Type 1. ANOTHER EPISODE?!?!? That's right Type 1ers and Noners. Ask Me About My Type 1 is here for the second time in just as many days and we're going to the movies!!! This week is all about the very bad and kinda of good but mostly bad portrayals of Diabetes in tv and film. And to talk with me about the not good, the bad, and the really really ugly of Diabetes tv and film I have on Kelsey and Lucy, writers and actresses themselves who are doing their part to cure the industry of their terrible Diabetes portrayals. Kelsey has written a feature comedy script inspired by her life with Type 1 and friend of the show Lucy, a Type None guest from all the way back in Season 1, comes back to sit in the Type None seat again because she's currently developing a tv series where she hopes to play a Type 1 character based on her experiences growing up with her Type 1 sister Maggie. Do you believe in a cure for diabetes? If the answer if 'yes' then you'll want to tune in to hear Rockin' for Research gala chair Stephanie Orr talk about this year's event which once again included an appearance by rock legends Loverboy - who helped kick it all off 21 years ago. This year's theme was 'Believe' - and despite Covid-19 restrictions, this amazing fundraising effort meant everyone was working to help turn 'Type 1 into Type None'. Virtual gatherings are the new successful way to raise money during this pandemic, and this year's gala didn't disappoint. Gift boxes, auction items and a live performance by the band itself, all helped make it as glamorous as ever. Also hear the personal and heart-warming story of Stephanie's own experiences as a mother of two adult children who have fought so hard against this disease. Inspirational and educational, the giving doesn't stop.
It's a new week Type 1s and Nones and THIS time around we're talking Marriage with Type 1, with Lexie and her Type None husband De'Andre. This one is going out to all the Type 1 Moms. And this week Ask Me About My Type 1 means that in every sense of the phrase. Because not only do we have a Type None guest who is Mom to a Type 1 daughter, we also have our Type 1 guest who has a two year old of her own. Type 1 guest Marci tells us all about her experiences after her Type 1 pregnancy and what parenting as Type 1 has taught her. Marci's friend and our Type None guest, Lindsay, is your typical Type 1 mom who manages her daughter's Type 1 along side her husband who ALSO lives with Type 1. Strangely enough this episode became the mostly highly Type 1 concentrated I've had to date and for reasons that you'll just have to hear to believe. This week on everyone's favorite Q & A podcast all about Type 1, I host a very special Type NONE guest, Delanie Fischer!!! For those who may not know, Delanie is one of the hosts of my favorite health, wellness, and comedy themed podcast Self-Helpless. Delanie has no knowledge of or connection to Type 1 so I called up friend of the show Jennifer Bartels from season 2 episode 2 and sat down with Delanie to answer all of her burning Type 1 Q's. This episode, and what I hope to be many more to come, is my effort to be more strategic about my awareness spreading by reaching out to the Type Nones that really should know more about what living with Type 1 actually means. And Delanie being the professional self-help pod-caster and question asker that she is seemed like the perfect Type None to start it all off with. As you'll hear, Delanie was an absolute dream Type None guest and the questions she brought really made me look at aspects of my Type 1 experience that I hadn't thought of in years. It's all about Politics on Ask Me About My Type 1 this week, Dia-Citizens of voting age!! As we approach the halfway point of National Diabetes Awareness Month, I wanted this episode to focus on a huge part of why we have this month in the first place: SUPPORT!! Yes, advocacy involves a lot of fundraising and those dollars are important but awareness spreading is also about helping the Type Nones in our lives be there in the ways that we need most. But on the other side, Type None life isn't easy either and they can also use very specific support that is difficult to identify let alone find. And to talk about exactly that I have on Type 1 famous person, Molly of "Hugging the Cactus" blog fame and her best Type None friend from college Emma. This week we explore all the ways that Type 1s AND Type Nones need support. Oh hi! I'm back from fall break and SO ready to give you the A's to all your Q's!! And just in time for the first Monday of National Diabetes Awareness Month. In honor of said Type 1 themed month, I have for you a family episode of Ask Me About My Type 1. Much like Type 1, Family is always there, they can be kind of annoying sometimes, and there is no cure. The typical Type 1 story is that of parents or siblings learning to support their Type 1 who is still and child and under their constant care. But what happens when your Type 1 is all grown up and already out of the house? Well, that's where my Type 1 guest Andrea and her sister Type None sister Jackie come in: Andrea was an adult and not even on the same side of the country as her sister Jackie and the rest of her family when she was diagnosed. It's a perspective on the adult Type 1 experience that I had never heard before so I had to share it with all of you. It's family night on Ask Me About My Type 1 Dia-Peoples so find your seat at the family dinner table and don't forget to pre-bolus because mom made dessert! And yes, Type 1 did do that... Type 1 Diabetics can do ANYTHING!! It's a beautiful sentiment about perseverance and determination and how the indomitable spirit of each and every person out there living that Type 1 life can overcome any challenges that this condition of ours throws at us. But as inspiring as this message can be the fact is that it just isn't true. I mean that phrase is ALWAYS followed up by the classic exceptions: military service and flying planes. But while most of us are okay with skipping 5 am PT and not living out of one of those rolly suitcases, there are Type 1s out there who want those very things. Case in point: my Type 1 guest Danielle who was diagnosed while studying to become a commercial airline pilot with hopes of joining the military. Type None guest and Danielle's best friend Roejean joins us as Danielle tells of how frustrating the above phrase can be when Type 1 is literally the only thing hold you back and I learn what it really means when we say Type 1s can't fly planes. It's a star-studded episode this week, Dia-babies, as I sit down and talk into my laptop mic with actress, writer, and comedian Jennifer Bartels alongside our Type None guest and her boyfriend, Vance. In addition, to be the most famous of my guest, Jen is also the most recently diagnosed Type 1 I've had on yet and her story gives a really interesting and eye-opening look into the not so bright side of Type 1. The first few years after diagnosis can be hectic for anyone, but imagine having to do it in your 30s when you thought you had life pretty well figured out. Jen tells us what it's been like learning how to be her own pancreas for the past two years as she navigates auditions, exercise, and social situations while Vance talks to us about just how frustrating it is not even knowing what you don't know but how candy can now solve a lot of Jen's problems.
