We get into what made this crossover so unique and highly anticipated, how they were able to mix these wildly different characters and tones, and how Quinta Brunson and Rob McElhenney got it off the ground in the first place.A proud part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveTip us on Ko-Fi | Gimmicks WebsiteEmail: gimmickspodcast@gmail.com | Bluesky | InstagramTheme song: "Disco Tears" by Raven | Creative Commons Attribution 3.0

An episode that explores autistic and neurodivergent representation in The Big Bang Theory and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. From Sheldon's neurotypical framing to Charlie Kelly's proudly autistic chaos, we break down what hits, what misses, and why it matters. Here's what's in store for today's episode: * In today's episode, we're diving into It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and how it nails autistic representation—unlike The Big Bang Theory, which mostly reflects a neurotypical perspective.* We start by breaking down what The Big Bang Theory got right—and wrong—about autism, touching on Young Sheldon and the dynamic between Sheldon and Amy.* After that, we dive into how It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is actually deeply autism-centric, even if it's not explicitly framed that way.* Then, we dive into how It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is deeply autism-centric—thanks in large part to Charlie Kelly, who is explicitly autistic and gives the show its neurodivergent heart.* We also explore how the writers of It's Always Sunny approach the show from a neurodivergent lens—crafting characters who consistently misunderstand the world around them in ways that feel deeply relatable to autistic viewers.* Our hosts get into all the autistic tendencies throughout the show—from Sweet Dee, Dennis, and Charlie's unique quirks to Charlie himself, who has openly identified as autistic multiple times.* We also talk about how the humor in It's Always Sunny is specifically tailored to an autistic audience and sense of humor—sharp, absurd, and rooted in social misunderstandings.* Matt and Angela also discuss the concept of autistic integrity and how it shows up both in It's Always Sunny and in the core values of this podcast.* Sometimes we have to play the game of capitalism just to get by—but as long as you've got your crew of fellow weirdos to lean on, you'll make it through.“It's representation, but at what cost? We don't have a seat at the table. There is a picture on the table of a caricature of an autistic person. And then everyone else talking about how weird they are.” - Matt“The impetus behind It's Always Sunny was not, ‘hey, let's make a marketable show and sell it and have lots of airtime and get in the top 20 or whatever.' They're like, ‘hey, you know what would be funny? If we did our own thing with a low-res video recorder.” - Matt“They are very, very socially minded. They're very, very self conscious about these things, which is the autistic way. They do things in the way that they do it because they think it's the right thing to do. Whenever they see an issue, they want to call it out on the show. So they do it in the most blatant way possible so that the people watching it will be like, ‘hey, that's an issue.” - MattDid you love this episode? We took a deep dive into autistic representation in pop culture—comparing The Big Bang Theory and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. From Sheldon and Amy's dynamic to Charlie Kelly's openly autistic identity, we unpack how neurodivergent humor, character quirks, and autistic integrity show up on screen. We also explore how Sunny nails an autistic lens through its writing, jokes, and chaotic logic. Episode SummaryGrowing up in Wellington, New Zealand, with parents in the police force and government, a career in film and TV wasn't exactly on the radar for Georgia Rippin. But after studying law and Māori at Vic, she made a bold leap to New York, armed with only a suitcase, a dream, and a few blocks of Whittaker's chocolate that she used to slip into mailrooms of the biggest studios on the planet. That scrappiness paid off: Georgia wound up producing mid-form shows (those 10- to 20-minute episodic pieces that can eventually scale into full series), teaming up with major networks, and ultimately founding Kold Open, a platform reshaping how creators monetise their IP and get discovered. In this episode, Georgia digs into the pitfalls of legacy media, why YouTube fails episodic creators, and how AI-driven product placement might unlock new revenue streams for independent filmmakers. She also shares the real story of how she broke into the industry, from dressing like an assistant to cold-knocking on studio doors, and why she believes being just the right amount of naïve can be an entrepreneur's superpower. Finally, she offers insights for fellow Kiwis eager to chase creative careers on the world's biggest stages.Time Stamps00:00 – Intro02:16 – From legal briefs to scripts: Why she picked New York over LA04:18 – Mid-form explained: How shows like Workaholics and It's Always Sunny began08:01 – Why YouTube's algorithm hurts episodic creators—and how Kold Open fixes it10:20 – Cracking the first big studio deal: Lessons in hustle, grit, and chocolate bribes14:19 – Being ‘productively naïve': Georgia on forging a path without industry connections18:07 – AI's silver lining for indies: New tools that help with coloring, sound, and distribution25:37 – Rise of FAST channels: Why “free TV” is the next frontier for content creators31:53 – The founder journey: Building a startup in NYC and hitting sustainable revenue35:54 – AI-driven ad placement: Adding a digital Pepsi cup post-production (and getting paid)40:48 – Advice for aspiring Kiwi creators: Collaboration, comedic storytelling, and never giving upResources- Kold Open – Georgia's mid-form platform: https://www.koldopen.com- Georgia Rippin on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/georgia-rippin/- Viva La Dirt League (NZ's comedy YouTubers mentioned): https://www.youtube.com/c/VivaLaDirtLeague

On this episode of The Nonsense Podcast, we kick things off with another "Choose Your TV Friend Group" debate, featuring Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Friends, That ‘70s Show, and The Golden Girls. But just as things are getting lighthearted, the conversation takes a deep turn. With Black History Month freshly behind us, FNBob comes in with a heavy question—what do Black people really want, and what's holding them back in America today? Is it a lack of leadership, education, or just the will to push forward? What starts as a genuine discussion quickly turns into FNBob realizing… maybe there's no helping anyone. In a rare switch-up, Henvincible plays the role of the skeptic, arguing that finding answers might not even be worth it. This episode is full of surprises—deep convos, wild realizations, and the kind of debates you don't usually expect on Nonsense. Did we solve anything? Probably not. But we sure got people talking.

Two friends and academics recap classic literature and take it off its pedestal. This season, we are only looking at banned and controversial texts. In our sixty-fourth episode and Valentine's Day special, we spent some sexy time with Gustave Flaubert's adulteress, Madame Bovary (1856), which was immediately banned for offenses against morality under the conservative rule of Napoleon III. We also play 'Spot the "Big F*ck"', develop the hashtag #NotAllNuns, and watch a character go through a C19th French version of It's Always Sunny's 'The D.E.N.N.I.S. System'.Cover art © Catherine Wu.Episode Theme: Charles Gounod, 'La nuit de Walpurgis' (Act V), Faust (1859), Performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra Hosted on Acast. Thomas and Frank are back, celebrating the holidays with a dive into It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This chaotic Christmas special has everything you'd expect from the gang—traumatizing childhood flashbacks, ill-advised interventions, and some of the most iconic scenes in the show's history. Join us as we explore how the gang's twisted holiday spirit creates a hilariously unforgettable episode. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 Introduction with Thomas and Frank 00:24 Why revisit It's Always Sunny? 02:02 Frank's selfish Christmas “gifts” and the gang's interventions 03:05 Mac and Charlie's hilariously dark Christmas memories 05:18 The infamous couch scene and its behind-the-scenes trivia 07:42 Charlie's unraveling at the mall 10:28 Frank's twisted take on A Christmas Carol 15:19 Claymation chaos and Frank's ultimate “lesson” 20:01 Eugene's snowblower mayhem and the gang's “happy” ending 28:20 The show's legacy as a comedy uniting fans across the spectrum Key Takeaways: It's Always Sunny expertly flips holiday traditions on their heads for maximum comedic effect. Behind-the-scenes details, like the inclusion of David Huddleston (Santa from Santa Claus: The Movie), add depth to the humor. Themes of found family and dysfunctional loyalty are at the heart of the episode. This special marked a significant transition for the show, being the last episode in low definition. Memorable Quotes: “Frank's lesson isn't to be a better person; it's that the gang will kill him if he doesn't change.” – Thomas “Throwing rocks at trains—it's the tradition that stuck.” – Frank “They think they're finding the Christmas spirit, but it's always in the most messed-up way possible.” – Frank Call to Action: Loved this episode? Note: I revisited a chat with multi-hyphenate Rob McElhenney from 2020. The writer, producer, and actor best known for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rob McElhenney, took a timeout during the apocalypse to rap with me about how he runs his writer's room, his humble beginnings and admiration for the great TV comedies, and his advice for aspiring TV producers. "Everyone is going through the same things. At least, people who respect science are. That sense of loneliness and despair ... needs to be addressed in some way, but ultimately we want to leave people with a sense of optimism." – Rob McElhenney FX recently renewed his irreverent "It's Always Sunny..." for a 15th season, making it officially the longest-running live-action sitcom in US history. The multihyphenate's latest, Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet, is a comedy series "...that follows a team of video game developers as they navigate the challenges of running a popular video game," The Apple TV+ show was co-created with "Sunny" alums Charlie Day and Megan Ganz (executive produced by McElhenney and Day), and has been described as "... the travails of a boisterous video game studio – think Silicon Valley meets Veep." *Note: Though I was lucky enough to catch Rob in his natural LA habitat, sadly the interview was cut short due to technical difficulties, our apologies for the abrupt ending.
