This week on the podcast, we revive the iconic acronym “TWID” (The Woman I'm Dating) and dig into the reclaimed ballroom term “Bricks,” honoring its complex roots and modern meaning. In 'Category is', we react to the Supreme Court's frustrating move to uphold the trans military ban, recognize our Hunger Games transition by discussing the Black dandyism theme of the 2025 Met Gala, and talk WNBA season hype, including A'Ja Wilson's sold-out sneaker drop. We address your Am I A Bad Queer? questions—from dodging chaotic straight friends at Pride to finessing free drinks at the straight clubs. And in Bad Queer Opinions, Kris unpacks the tension behind the Met Gala's record-breaking $31M and Shana throws shade at Jeremy Pope's cosplay fit. Shoutouts: Kris: Play it forward - How Women Are Changing Sports to Change the World. Play It Forward features twenty‑five inspirational stories of badass women from all corners of the sports universe. From profiles of professional athletes and Olympians at the top of their game to everyday women putting in the work without a crowd, these are true tales of fierce competitors, dedicated teammates, and passionate advocates who are all too accustomed to hearing the word “no.”The book is available now, follow on IG @togethxrShana: A'Ja Wilson for an ICONIC A'One Drop. Putting the game on notice, A'Ja drops her first signature footwear and apparel collection. The shoes sold out in MINUTES. And more drops are coming. “Rapidly growing interest in the subject of homosexuality has made novels on this theme a big seller...”Happy Pride Month! After one publishing house started finding success with publishing books focusing on themes of homosexuality in the late 1940s and early 1950s, they began keeping a mailing list of those interested in gay books. But the United States Postal Service started catching on, and the publishers were indicted on obscenity charges. That didn't stop Donald Webster Cory, the pen name of American academic Edward Sagarin, from starting his own gay mail-order book business in 1952: the Cory Book Service. But Sagarin was plagued by internalized homophobia, and for decades maintained that homosexuality was a mental illness that can be cured. That is, until another queer academic had enough of Edward's drama.Theme music is credited to Wendy Marcini, Elvin Vanguard, and Jules Gaia.Instagram: @literaryscandalsSelected bibliography:• Buying Gay: How Physique Entrepreneurs Sparked a Movement by David K. Medaya Ocher and Eric Newman speak with author Patrick Nathan about his latest novel, and this month's LARB Book Club pick, The Future Was Color. The novel chronicles the life of Hungarian immigrant writer George Curtis. When we meet George, he's writing the hacky sort of monster movies that are today's cult classics, trying to find sex and love amid the closeted ambiance of life between the wars and in the midst of the McCarthyite purges of communists and homosexuals that plagued the mid-century film industry. As George demurs writing the studio's next big hit to create something of greater substance about Hungary and the war from his exile perspective, he follows a passionate affair with his coworker in the writers' room. But when he departs the studio office for a residency of sorts with a Malibu actress and her gay husband, a dramatic chain reaction brings new motivations and possibilities to light. A novel about a moment in time that is also in so many ways timeless, The Future Was Color is an exploration of the line between the personal and political, between safety and risk, the art we create and the art that creates us. Also, Claire Messud, author of This Strange Eventful History, returns to recommend Susie Boyt's novel, Loved and Missed.

"There are a particular gang of sodomitical wretches in this town..."Did you ever wonder why British men are always just a little...you know...?Well, in truth, it's because 300 years ago they invented being a "gentleman" (gay) who doesn't work (GAY) and just wants nicer things (GAY GAY GAY!).But round about the same time the British invented being British – a.k.a. the early 18th century – London was also home to the aforementioned "gang" of gay men who challenged traditional notions of masculinity. The "molly" represented a new type of gay man: he was typically working class, loved to impersonate women – wear their clothes, gossip, call each other names like "The Duchess of Chamomile" and "Old Fish Hannah" – and he had a playground of taverns, inns, and gin shop back rooms to frequent to meet his fellow "sodomitical wretches".These were the molly houses, and they represented the heartland of a working-class, gay subculture that flourished in London in the early 1700s.Sadly, we know so much about the mollies of 18th century London because they were brutally persecuted by The Society for the Reformation of Manners, who were about as fun at parties as they sound.Mollies faced violence, imprisonment, and even death for living out and proud. But they still lived brave lives of queer joy, gathering weekly at the molly houses for decades so that they could boink each other, fall in love, and, yes, give birth to wooden babies.Boys will be boys!Join me and my guest on this odyssey through early modern queer culture in one of the most fascinating periods of human history. My guest, AJ West, is the author of a forthcoming novel set amongst the mollies of the 1720s, The Betrayal of Thomas True, which is going to be an absolutely genius historical fiction mystery.Pre-order a copy here and listen to our episode to learn the backstory of one of history's most well-documented queer subcultures, which by the way is literally older than the nation of the United States. For more from Historical Homos, you can join our cult at www.historicalhomos.com and follow us on Instagram and TikTok.If you like what you hear, please leave us a five star rating on Apple or Spotify. After the end of the Maoist era in the People's Republic of China, the rise of queer communities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has generated growing public and academic attention. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork in northwest China, Casey James Miller offers a novel, compelling, and intimately personal perspective on Chinese queer culture and activism.  In Inside the Circle: Queer Culture and Activism in Northwest China (Rutgers UP, 2023), Miller tells the stories of two courageous and dedicated groups of queer activists in the city of Xi'an: a grassroots gay men's HIV/AIDS organization called Tong'ai and a lesbian women's group named UNITE. Taking inspiration from “the circle,” a term used to imagine local, national, and global queer communities, Miller shows how everyday people in northwest China are taking part in queer culture and activism while also striving to lead traditionally moral lives in a rapidly changing society. The queer stories in this book broaden our understandings of gender and sexuality in contemporary China and show how taking global queer diversity seriously requires us to de-center Western cultural values, historical experiences, and theoretical perspectives. Casey James Miller is Assistant Professor of anthropology at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He receives his PhD degree in anthropology from Brandeis University. His work focuses on the intersections between queer anthropology, medical anthropology, and the anthropology of Chinese culture and society. Marie Faustin joins us to talk about the class and gender politics of TIME, especially when it comes to showing up at events. Plus: Should we get TSA Pre-Check? What is our ideal date? What's the deal with goofy cops? Is bad sex okay or should it be punishable by death? Well... I guess we'll see!Subscribe to our Patreon at patreon.com/straightiolab for bonus episodes twice a month and don't forget to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
