Have you stopped to think about what makes music funny? What makes a good action score? And what can a composer do to suck the life out of their composition? In today's episode, we're talking to Composer Matt Novack. We discuss all of this and really get into the details, so if you want to learn about how to write music like this, this is the episode for you. Matt Novack is a classically trained composer and percussionist whose intuitively smart scores have created indelible moments in (mostly) comedy projects across series and film. Matt's music supports performances by many of today's greatest comedic actors, including Amy Poelher, Paul Rudd, Rob Corddry, Megan Mullally, Henry Winkler and Will Arnett. Some of his notable credits include working cult favorite Children's Hopsital, Netflix's a Murderville, as well as award-winning Dog Days and spots for Assassin's Creed Valhalla. His most recent work can be heard on TBS's Miracle Workers: End Times. Topics include: • Matt's background and education as a percussionist/composer • What makes good “action” music • Scoring a comedy • Absurdist comedies vs sitcoms • What I wish I learned in school • Working with a temp track while staying original • Using and manipulating digital samples to create analog synth sound • Nothing kills the music of a scene like trying to be funny • The project Matt learned the most from • Advice for aspiring composers/musicians https://www.mattnovack.com/ Music featured in this episode (and shared with permission): Better Than Heroes Overture Composed by Matt Novack I Regret Lots of Things from "Harley Quinn" composed by Jefferson Friedman, Matt Novack, Christopher French I Like it Here from "Miracle Workers" Composed by Matt Novack Sad Sid from "Miracle Workers" Composed by Matt Novack The Enchanted Workshop Composed by Matt Novack End Times Main Title From "Miracle Workers" Composed by Matt Novack

Max Burkholder stars as the lead of Seth MacFarlane's critically acclaimed series TED, a prequel to the hit film franchise. He plays the leading role of “John Bennet” (the younger version of Mark Wahlberg's character from the films), a good-hearted teenager who is still in his awkward teenage phase. With Ted's help, John hilariously navigates adolescence, dealing with everything from first dates to high school bullies. Premiering on January 11, 2024, Ted launched as Peacock's most-watched original title ever through its first three days on the platform. Burkholder is perhaps best known for his portrayal of “Max Braverman” in NBC's long running award-winning series PARENTHOOD, from producers Jason Katims, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Here Max raised awareness while portraying a young boy with Asperger's syndrome. After the second episode aired, Asperger's was one of the most frequently searched terms on Google. He also played the lead role in Paramount TV's WHEN THE STREET LIGHTS GO ON for DGA, Oscar, IDA, and Emmy-nominated director Brett Morgen. His notable recurring roles include HBO's IN TREATMENT and BROTHERS AND SISTERS. In film, Burkholder starred in Debra Eisenstadt's hit Sundance comedy BLUSH opposite Wendy McLendon-Covey; and in the title role of BENJAMIN, alongside comedy veterans Rob Corddry, Kevin Pollak and Dave Foley.  Burkholder began his career at a very young age in films including DADDY DAY CARE directed by Steve Carr, FRIENDS WITH MONEY directed by Nicole Holofcener, and a starring role in the Michael Bay-produced hit feature THE PURGE opposite Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey.  In the world of voiceover, Burkholder has voiced characters on a number of hit series including Amazon Prime's INVINCIBLE, FAMILY GUY, THE CLEVELAND SHOW, AMERICAN DAD and THE LAND BEFORE TIME. It is a pleasure to welcome radio personality Dave O to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Dave O began his radio career in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, where he worked on the weekend overnight shift on the number one radio station KFRX at 16 years old. He continued to work on air throughout college before beginning his full-time radio career in the Top 30 market of Charlotte, North Carolina, where he worked for two years. Next, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in 2006 before landing his dream job in Kansas City radio, where he hosts the weekday afternoons on Mix 93.3, Kansas City's Number One Hit Music Station, from 3 to 7 PM. Over his career, he interviewed many celebrities, from recording artists Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez to actors Adam Scott and Rob Corddry. He previously hosted Round Trip with Dave O. This two-hour trip to the 1990s included songs from the decade and welcomed several of the decade's top recording artists. Barenaked Ladies, C&C Music Factory, Jennifer Lopez, Lisa Loeb, and Third Eye Blind are several recording artists that visited the show until it ended in 2021. In addition to music, he also loves talking about Kansas City sports. He launched Clubhouse Conversation, where he spoke with former Kansas City Royals players and staff members. He recently launched the KC Press Box with Dave O & Killian White. The show discusses sports headlines and teaches listeners how to make cash with sports investing! I interviewed Dave O in February 2014 with his former Mix 93.3 colleague Nathan Graham. We reunited for a podcast interview for the first time in nine years. He spoke about the current state of radio and how Mix 93.3 welcomed several rising stars, including Justin Bieber, Lizzo, and Meghan Trainor. He also revealed his most memorable interviews and the state of Kansas City sports.

The story features four lifelong friends who travel to watch Tom Brady play in Super Bowl LI in 2017. The movie offers supporting roles from Tom Brady, Billy Porter, Rob Corddry, Alex Moffat, Bob Balaban, Glynn Turman, Sara Gilbert, Patton Oswalt, Rob Gronkowski, and the one and only Guy Fieri. The witty screenplay was written by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern, who were the writers of Booksmart (2019). The cinematography is by the great John Toll, who shot Braveheart, The Thin Red Line, and Cloud Atlas. Laughs were had by most of the audience for this wacky comedy. We'll tell you all the trouble that these ladies get into!
