Please note: Like how Death Proof uses fake film grain to make it seem like it's an older movie, only to stop doing it halfway through, Laci and Matt's audio improves halfway through this episode. You might not even notice the audio isn't great in the first half... but if you do, just know it gets better eventually. Friend of the Show Cinema Chris joins Laci and Matt to talk about Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (2007). Originally a 90-minute movie presented as part of a double feature alongside Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, Death Proof now stands on its own (in an expanded edition) as one of the more fascinating entries in Tarantino's filmography. We discuss the beautiful animal that is Kurt Russell, Rose McGowan's captivating pronunciation of “chocolate milk,” and how much joy there is to be had in a car going vroom-vroom real fast. Hey folks, we had to make a programming change this week because one of our bodies did a medical oopsie and we ended up in the emergency room. Everything's fine... but wait till the bill comes, am I right?? Anyway, we had to push back our Death Proof episode, so now, we have unlocked our Royal Tenenbaums episode from behind the Patreon paywall. See you in a week! Love you goodbyeeee.
Friend of the Show Jen (@JenWalksN2Walls on TikTok) joins us to cover Sister Act 2. We once again follow the misadventures of Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg), a Las Vegas headliner who selfishly abandons the backup dancers, crew members, and support staff who rely on her show to make their living, all so she can go be a substitute teacher at a Catholic school for some reason. Seriously, is she paying all these people out of her pocket while her show is on hiatus? Or is she like Jimmy Fallon during the 2023 strikes, sending them each a $20 gift card and best wishes? Anyway. This movie's a lot of fun, but it is all over the place. Looking into the production history, we see it's a hastily produced sequel that seems almost as if it started as an original, unrelated script about a high school choir competition and then had the Sister Act nuns awkwardly grafted onto it. Still, Whoopi Goldberg is her usual delightful self, but she's outshined by these delightful kids, including a just-about-to-be-a-superstar Lauryn Hill as Rita, a high schooler whose mom hates choirs more than anything else. It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 2007 was a damn fine year for horror movies. Unfortunately though, there is no iron clad masterpiece amongst them. Just a ton of really decent films. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 2007? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 4+ hour running time split over 3 episodes. This is 2007, A Year In Horror. It's a pretty long journey this one, part 3 of 3 in fact. Thanksgiving (2023) Directed By: Eli Roth Starring: Patrick Dempsey, Ty Olsson, Gina Gershon, a bunch of other turkey fuckers. With the turkey day holiday coming up soon, we've been joined by our good friend Jordana from Pretty Killer Podcast (and loads of other stuff), to talk about the Eli Roth film Thanksgiving. Originally teased as a trailer in the Grindhouse double feature (Planet Terror and Death Proof) in 2007, it only took 16 years for this movie to finally hit the 'Big Screen'. We discuss that today, but first let it be known that IMDB describes this film as such: "After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts - the birthplace of the infamous holiday." You can find links to everything Jordana here. The original 'Thanksgiving' Trailer that appeared in Grindhouse The new 2023 trailer for 'Thanksgiving' Like what you hear here? It's the day after the election, and the crew dives into politics with a mix of humor and honesty. Get ready for adult themes, bold opinions, and some unexpected twists! This week, Trevin makes an enlightening trip to Massachusetts, where he uncovers "America" in a unique way, sparking a deep reflection on childhood roles—whether you're the "bedroom kid" or the "living room kid"—and the power of acceptance in shaping young minds. Meanwhile, Amanda is stuck dealing with a sinkhole that local officials have decided can wait until next year. In Killer Facts, we uncover some wild trivia about "The Beast," the president's fortified limo (also known by the codename Stagecoach). Amanda surprises Trevin with the imaginative world of Kane Kwei's fantasy coffins, leading to a fun debate on what custom coffin design Trevin would choose. And now for what you've all been waiting for: Story Time! Trevin shares the wild story of Emily Grover and the stolen election of 2020, complete with intense interrogations and a dose of political satire. Amanda tells the tale of comedian Ariel Elias and her unforgettable encounter with someone else's political rage. Both stories offer a humorous yet candid look into the world of politics, only the way Live, Laugh, Larceny could. Welcome the finale of our Halloween Series! For this episode, you get a double feature--Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror. Both flicks pay homage to exploitation genre of 70s horror. That means you'll see deliberately damaged film stock, missing reels, and cheesy dialogue. It's a fine line between clever and indulgent. Where do these movies fall? Are they scary, or just goofy? How does an all-star cast handle the film? Tune in to this special bonus episode and find out!#horror #DeathProof #PlanetTeror #2000s #halloween #Cinemavino
This week, we're checking in to the heartbreak hotel and taking the express checkout to Hell as Spooktober continues with a minor forgotbuster based on a story by Stephen King. It's 2007's 1408, directed by Mikael Håfström, and starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Jasmine Jessica Anthony, Tony Shaloub, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Len Cariou. The movie is not nearly scary enough to really leave a lasting impression, but it's not bad either, as its Swedish director injects a good amount of visual flair into a one-location concept, and Cusack is more than capable of carrying the load in what is largely a one-man show. Plus: We've got a mixed bag of theatrical field reports, as our intrepid hosts have combined to see The Wild Robot and Megalopolis! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 1408 is currently streaming on Hollywood Suite north of the border at the time this episode was released. You can probably also find it at your local library. Other works discussed in this episode include the Netflix Fear Street trilogy, Who Invited Them?, Late Night With The Devil, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, [·REC], Quarantine, Searching, Paranormal Activity, The Mist, Scream, Talk To Me, Night of the Living Dead, Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Friday the 13th Part 2, The Babadook, Malignant, Barbarian, Terrifier, Star Trek (2009), Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Mr. McMahon, Morbius, Poltergeist, The Shining, Room 104, Planet Terror, Death Proof, Halloween (2007), The Devil's Rejects, and Black Sheep. We'll be back next week as Spooktober continues with a well-regarded horror classic from one of the original masters of the genre, as we finally catch up with Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!
My old friend Jordan joins the show for the first itme to discuss the amazing ride that is Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse! Double feature throwback to the grindhouse era of exploitation films. Featuring fake trailers from Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright, Eli Roth, and Rodriguez himself. Since this is an Austin Texas set double feature we decide to try some Still Austin Cask Strength bourbon whiskey and Shiner Bock. Cheers!
If there was such a thing as the American ambassador to 60s French Pop it would have to be Elinor Blake, better known as April March. Elinor began her professional career in the world of animation back in the early 80s before she took on the April March rock and roll alter-ego. You've probably heard her music over the last few decades classic cartoons like The Ren and Stimpy Show and I Am Weasel and cult favorite films including But I'm A Cheerleader and Death Proof. She's rubbed shoulders with all kinds of heavy figures in the entertainment world, including Ronnie Spector, Pee Wee Herman, Frank Zappa, Maya Rudolph, and numerous figues in classic and contemporary Franch pop. I spoke with Elinor in the Summer of 2024 about her storied career, starting with a sneak preview of her upcoming 2025 album Villerville.
Roughly 10 years ago, when I was in my early days of covering film festivals, I was thrilled to get the opportunity to sit down with the team responsible for a movie that spotlighted a group of women who were, and still are, utter forces in film and television. That team? The filmmakers behind Raze, led by prolific stunt performer and coordinator, Zoë Bell.Well aware of her work in Kill Bill, Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds, Whip It, and then some, I was quite eager to see what Bell could do both in front of and behind the lens in new ways. Not only did she headline Raze, but she also produced it and heavily contributed to the development of the story and the action right from the start. It was a significant leap that suggested she'd continue to soar in film and television in a multitude of ways.Sure enough, at the end of September 2024, there we were celebrating Raze 10 years after release, discussing her accomplishments working on blockbusters like Thor: Ragnarok and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and teasing her upcoming feature directorial debut. Bell is a proven unstoppable powerhouse in this business, and it was a treat and honor to get to discuss how she found her craft and voice in such a high-pressure line of work, and how she continues to expand that skill set every step of the way, making a bigger and bigger mark on this industry with her art. STURD - O - VISION EP. 26 EPIDEMIC OF TERROR: UNLEASHING PLANET TERROR
GRINDHOUSE (2007) is a double feature directed by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. The film combines two exploitation-style movies: Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror,” a zombie outbreak thriller, and Tarantino’s “Death Proof,” a slasher film featuring a psychotic stuntman. Interspersed with faux trailers for other outrageous movies, “Grindhouse” pays homage to 1970s B-movies’ over-the-top violence, campy dialogue, … Continue reading Ep. 07-01: Grindhouse (2007) →
This week, we tackle Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's mammoth double feature GRINDHOUSE, which attempted to recapture the brutal magic of 70s exploitation cinema. We discuss both Rodriguez's PLANET TERROR and Tarantino's DEATH PROOF, as well as the many fake trailers and how Harvey Weinstein worked hard to sabotage the entire film's release. In der letzten Folge haben wir alle Tarantino-Filme bis Kill Bill 2 besprochen, diesmal geht's mit Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful 8 und schließlich Once upon a time in Hollywood weiter. Two individual filmmakers take centre stage in this episode of Film Stories, starting with Quentin Tarantino. For a decade, he was talking in interviews about making a World War II movie called Inglorious Bastards, but he swerved making it for a long time, in favour of the Kill Bill movies and Death Proof. He argued he didn't have writer's block: he just couldn't stop writing it.He changed the title to Inglourious Basterds, set himself a firm deadline, and started shooting just eight months before the film was due to debut at the Cannes Film Festival...In the case of Jim Henson, he had dreams of taking The Muppets to the big screen, and as they were proving to be a sensation on television in the 1970s, he got a handsome budget to do so. The challenge? Production on The Muppet Show was ongoing, and the three month shoot would take The Muppets out of a controlled studio environment for the story for the first time.Stories of both films are told in this episode... Why make the feature length version of a beloved fake trailer when you can make a watered down Blumhouse-style remake? Synopsis Plymouth, Mass the indigenous home of the pilgrims is beset by a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer. Wearing the mask of Plymouth's founder and dressed as a pilgrim, the killer seems to be exacting revenge on those involved in a deadly Black Friday riot a year earlier. Between the holiday themed kills a cast of teens led by JEssica (Nell Verlaque), as well as the sexiest sheriff alive played by patrick dempsey try to unmask the killer and save the town. Review of Thanksgiving This film is based off of a fake trailer that Eli Roth created for Grindhouse to play in between the double feature Planet Terror (2007) and Death Proof (2007). The trailer was an homage to 80s hard R slashers such as Pieces and My Bloody Valentine. The film, instead of being a gritty and stylish homage, Thanksgiving feels like a lazy Blumhouse remake of a much more iconic movie. There are some great kills, half of which are shown in the trailer, but they are wrapped with a bland sanitized script full of too many uninteresting characters. Eli Roth really seems to be phoning it in on the directing. The film comes off as lazy, since there is very little style and the editing is constantly undercutting the impact of some scenes by dwelling a second too long, or not giving you crucial information. Overall it comes off as an unseasoned and undercooked turkey of a movie. Score 4/10
