Welcome to our LGBT podcast! In this episode, we meet Gerard Cabrera (he/him) and I talk with him about The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. Gerard tells me that, "The Magic Mountain is about educating yourself and trying to make decisions for how you want to live your own life. Do you want to follow a path of seeking freedom or do you want to follow a path of just maintaining a status quo so that you can survive? With AIDS raging, I think that was a very salient sort of internal debate for me."Gerard is the author of the new novel Homo Novus and I talk with him all about it. What is the plot? It's Holy Week 1987. And Fr. Linus Fitzgerald, a Catholic priest, is confined to his hospital bed by an AIDS diagnosis, while being comforted by the seminarian he sexually abused as an adolescent. Oh what a beautiful morning because we are here with actor, singer, and three-time Tony-nominee, Mary Testa. You Might Know Her From Whoopi, Sex and the City, The Bounty Hunter, and the New York stage productions of Queen of the Mist,  Xanadu, 42nd Street, Barnum, On the Town, The Rink, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Oklahoma. Mary gave us all the goods on developing Xanadu, and how it found its way to Broadway, accepting the role of Aunt Eller while Sally Struthers was watching the Golden Globes in her living room, and iconically covering for Liza Minnelli in The Rink opposite Chita Rivera. We also got into the collaborative relationship she has with Michael John La Chuisa and the significance of headlining Queen of the Mist. All that plus Mary took all (and we mean all) our hot gossip questions about 42nd Street, taking over for Terri White, and whether or not Jennifer Aniston did coverage! Soon she was writing and directing her own work, including a queer TV pilot about two girls navigating their sexuality in Vancouver.Alexa tells us about the complex and frustrating process of shopping a pilot about queer characters—as a queer, feminine creator in a cis-male dominated industry. She navigated through so much pushback, ultimately reclaiming control of her work and standing up for her creative vision. We're SO grateful to Alexa for this eye-opening conversation. Cars go real fast… we learned that quickly during our viewing of The Fast and the Furious (2001).  The meaning of a ten second car eluded us for a moment, but we got there! We also put the pedal to the metal with conversations about dudebro chokeholds, Titane, car SFX, Vending Machine Diesel Truck, bionic Honda Civics, will Lightning McQueen go to Heaven?, and Quetzal mixes reality with fanfic.  Find us on social media and wherever you get your podcasts: https://lnk.bio/OX6t

How DO you measure a year? We find out as half the gang falls for (and continues to hate) Broadway's quintessential queer musical - Rent (2005). Friend of the pod, queer pal, and musical expert AJ joins us as we discuss gay cinema tropes, Dalia's “favorite” friend, wack performance art, Jellicle cat muggings, and how many times Antonio can fit that infernal number into conversation. This is a special episode of a panel discussion recorded at eNBy City with Dr J, malakai, Haz and Lilly. We are talking to a room of mostly students. The event focussed on Queer Joy. This is the second part of a three part recording. Be aware about half way through we pulled the recording equipment apart - and it means the audio quality drops - I've done my best to equalise it and improve it - malaki and myself still have a pretty much working mic, Haz, Lilly and the audience have a mic that isn't working so well This was recorded for the Hear & Queer Podcast - https://www.youtube.com/@hearqueer5656 We have a transcript for this episode - IIC Special 2 eNBy City Transcript Our Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/itiscomplicatedGive us feedback - we're on twitter - https://twitter.com/ItIsComplicatd - and Mastodon - https://ohai.social/@itiscomplicated- or leave us a rating or a review on your favourite podcast platform Hosted on Acast. We're starting the new year with a longtime friend of the pod whose *very* distinctive name can be heard each and every week on our list of patrons: that's right, it's Pooh! Pooh hails from Alaska, and is NOT kidding when she says that the story of her life is basically "many, many Lifetime movies." From getting married off at seventeen to a "family friend" who was four decades her senior, to being personally responsible for helping to get domestic violence laws passed in Texas, Pooh has navigated some unfathomably difficult circumstances (abuse, life-threatening illness, etc.) with an INCREDIBLE amount of grace and humor. She shares some of the most impactful stories from her life, including how her platonic poly family has rallied around her in the wake of a recent health diagnosis. All this, plus the kiss heard 'round the world at FaberryCon!Follow Pooh on Twitter at @rqficrecs and on Instagram at @poohtine7.

Yeah baby! We're closing out the year with none other than Groundling alum and fellow wig lover, Mindy Sterling. You Might Know Her From: The Goldbergs, Desperate Housewives, Drop Dead Gorgeous, iCarly, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, ConMan, and the Austin Powers trilogy. We go deep with Mindy on her iconic lesbian role, Frau Farbissina, but also dig into the lesbian subplot lurking beneath Ron Howard's Grinch film. Plus: working with kids and dogs, her repartee with the late, great Leslie Jordan in the Alan Tudyk web series, ConMan, the surprising generosity of Teri Hatcher, and why Jim Carrey was more method than Mike Myers. It's a doozy of a way to close out 2022. If you've ever lost yourself, found yourself, shaken off your inhibitions, and/or forged community on a dancefloor, then I think you're going to enjoy this week's episode. I was lucky enough to talk to Trevor Campbell, the host of the You Made Me Queer podcast, about Toronto's lost space The Gladstone, and it's mid-week dance party Hump Day Bump where Trevor was found cutting a rug many a night in the 00s. We talk all about accepting the freak you are, figuring out when to put aside your dreams, and weird-things-that-people-say-that-they-think-are-compliments-but-which-just-completely-fuck-with-your-head... ugh. Do you have any memories of The Gladstone, or clubbing from your own queer scene that you want to share?
