Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

It is not a recipe she would recommend, but Fanny Slater mixed one part alcohol, one part low self esteem, a dash of fame, and a sprinkle of insecurity, and ultimately found herself spiraling down a tunnel headed straight for rock bottom.  Luckily Fanny also had a heap of support and love from friends and family which helped her when she needed it most.  This is a story about reinvention from the winner of a cooking contest on the Rachel Ray show to an aspiring sobriety mentor. Hers is a story about finding herself, after almost losing everything.     Bio: Fanny Slater has food flowing through her genes. Her mom founded the nationally acclaimed bakery business Rachel's Brownies in 1975, and together—her parents created an enormously successful corporation that would live on for decades. Fanny grew up in Raleigh where, at age four, she began her home-taught kitchen apprenticeship when her dad pulled up a chair next to the stove and handed her a spatula. She worked in restaurants and prep kitchens to receive culinary exposure, but was equally drawn to performing arts. At twenty-five, Fanny moved to Hollywood, California to pursue acting and improv training with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. Several years later, she followed her stomach back to the east coast to open her own catering company. She moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in 2012. In 2014, she beat out nearly 1,000 other hopefuls from across the country who entered Rachael Ray's Great American Cookbook Competition. Fanny won the grand prize of a publishing contract under Rachael's imprint, and Simon & Schuster published her cookbook, Orange, Lavender & Figs: Deliciously Different Recipes from a Passionate Eater, in 2016. In the following years, Fanny co-hosted the Food Network series, Kitchen Sink and became a regular on Cooking Channel's longtime popular series, Best Thing I Ever Ate.  In 2020, Fanny was living in Illinois with her husband when her longtime issues with alcohol came to a head. Within one year, she would move back to North Carolina, get a divorce, come out of the closet, and attend a 40-day rehab program. Today, Fanny is 3+ years sober and living near the beach in Wilmington with her girlfriend, two dogs, and a cat. She works as a food and beverage writer specializing in recipe development, food photography, and content creation for social media. As of recent, Fanny has pivoted her focus towards being a sobriety enthusiast who encourages others to speak up about their struggles. She uses her Instagram platform @fannyslater to bluntly share her journey of going from a self-destructive addict to an advocate for mental health, recovery, and self-love.

Another example of a comedian eventually rising to some degree of fame and success less from funny demeanour or clever joke writing than by relentless careerism. I am joined this week by a special friend of mine, the Queen herself, Amanda Dieli. Amanda is an award-winning Brooklyn-based actor, writer, and comedian. She holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Southern California, and a Graduate Certification in Television Writing from the University of California, Los Angeles and has studied screenwriting at Columbia University. She has trained professionally with The School at Steppenwolf in Chicago, Upright Citizens Brigade, and LABryinth in NYC, and at NYU in their Florence, Italy campus. She is a veteran sketch and improve performer of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. And most notably, in 2012, she had a scene with Sigourney Weaver in a pilot. She's a proud member of SAG-AFTRA. I'm excited to have her on today and talk about her experiences as master of all trades artist from tv writing, sketch comedy and improv, acting and, notably, how to produce your own work – from the pros and cons to the hardships and joys of it. Fun fact: she is avid lover of Halloween novelty music. She created, wrote and produced her first short series, 18 Grand: A Personal Space Odyssey, which had its world premiere at NYC Web Fest in 2018 where it took the top prize of Best web Series, later appearing in several other festivals in 2019. You can check out the webseries at the link below. She also performed in Under the Radar in 2015 at The Orpheus Variations, a piece she also co-wrote with The Deconstructive Theatre Project. Amanda and I met at UCLA and trained professionally together in our time and oversaw the development of several spec scripts and TV pilots together. Besides being a Reference Queen, she is one of the most caring and excellent advice-giving people I have ever met and we are excited for her to spill her Hollywood Chai. --- Follow us on Instagram: @thehollywoodchai and Twitter: @ChaiHollywood Check out Amanda Dieli on her official website: http://www.amanda-dieli.com/ Amanda's Award-Winning Webseries can be seen here: https://www.footprint.tv/series/18-grand-206154 --- This episode is sponsored by: Anchor - for all your Podcasting needs Dalia Web Design - for all your website designing needs and maintenance: http://www.daliawebdesign.com/ ZENA Creations - for customizable gifts, merchandise and whatever you need: https://www.instagram.com/zena.creation DrafTees, Inc. - for all your writer t-shirt needs, follow on instagram and twitter @drafteesinc The Script Doctors - a sister podcast where we fix scripts on air! Don't roll your eyes at me, young lady! It's time for the 6th episode of the Louder Than Bombs Podcast! This time, we sit down with writer and comedian John Frusciante. John is a huge music fan, and he also happens to be the Artistic Associate at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York. We talk about the Theatre, comedy, and lots of other stuff including the difference between American and British Punk, Pink Floyd, and why you don't have to isten to Metallica anymore.  It's a table-thumpin' good time! xx, Sherry PS For more about the bands and things John and I talk about, be sure to check out our Tumblr: http://louderthanbombspodcast.tumblr.com

Subscribe on iTunes and see us live at UCB East on Jan. 8th at 8pm with artist Molly Crabapple (Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School) and Erika and Annie of indie rock band Au Revoir Simone; and at the NYC Podfest with Halley Feiffer (The Squid and the Whale, Bored to Death), Julieanne Smolinski (Rolling Stone's 25 Funniest People on Twitter) and musical guest Mike Pace (Oxford Collapse, Worst Gig Ever podcast)!

As a stand-up, improviser and sketch writer, comedian Nick Vatterott is a triple threat. And a triple treat! His stand-up has been featured on Jimmy Fallon and in the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival. He's understudied for Second City, and his sketch group HEAVYWEIGHT (including Cloverfield's TJ Miller) has performed all around the country. Nick's also performed his one man show No Outlet at the iO Theater, the Chicago Sketchfest and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. A few weeks ago, Nick came over to the Wrestling Team apartment to discuss acting out in class, Jesuits, “Crimson and Clover”, missing milk jugs, pillows as mnemonic devices, boat tours, Sliding Doors, getting out of Chicago, and all-you-can-eat sushi. Plus, we debut our new segment “Creative Rituals”!
