El joven Lincoln o La legión invencible. Winston Miller escribió el guion sobre la biografía de Wyatt Earp, "Frontier Marshal", escrita por Stuart N Lake. Ford siempre dijo que escuchó del propio Wyatt sus peripecias, y sin embargo hay mucha ficción añadida, la incursión de la joven Clementine, el asesinato del hermano menor, la muerte de Doc en el tiroteo, o el estereotipo de la amante latina interpretada por Linda Darnell. Pa Clanton -Walter Brennan- y su prole son unos salvajes, huelen a vaca. Lo primero que harán Earp y sus hermanos cuando llegan a Tombstone será afeitarse, darse un baño ya es demasiado. Los dos protagonistas Earp y Doc Holliday - Victor Mature- se mueven entre ambos escenarios, entre el viejo oeste y las formas civilizadas. En la memorable secuencia del actor teatral recitando a Hamlet, secuestrado en una taberna por los borrachos Clanton, nervioso olvida el soliloquio y Doc hace de apuntador, recita los versos del bardo, los siente. Joseph MacDonald hizo un excelente trabajo tras las cámaras. Los contrastes, la fisicidad, la profundidad de cada plano. El inicio imponente con Monument Valley al fondo, la iluminación nocturna de Tombstone, el ambiente cargado de tabaco en el salón. EDoc Holliday entra en el bar, con sus ojos de sapo atormentado, los andares de Fonda desde la mesa a la barra y el duelo de miradas. Ford deja un espacio lateral vacío que después ocuparán los dos hermanos Virgil – Tim Holt- y Morgan -Ward Bond-, guardando las espaldas del hermano.
