Photo: Fresh snow coats Monument Valley Tribal Park straddling Utah and Arizona in February 2026. (Gabriel Pietrorazio) The Navajo Nation signed an agreement with Utah last month that centers on advancing economic development and authentic Indigenous representation through cinema. As KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio reports, it also formalizes a time-honored tradition of filmmaking on Navajoland – home to one of Hollywood's most iconic Western settings straddling Utah and Arizona. If you ever take a road trip to Monument Valley, you will see why this legendary landscape is so much more than just a movie set. It is also a tribal park, the first to be founded in 1958 and where about 100 or so Navajos actually call home. This 17-mile dirt loop – dotted with horses and hogans – is managed by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department. “If they say no, we tell the film production, no. But that doesn't mean that we're going to shut the door on you.” For Edsel Pete, who is in charge of the Navajo Nation TV and Film Office, the new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the state of Utah is all about being “film friendly”, while also caring for the environment. Scripts can be changed – the land, not so much. “As we know, film is not going anywhere, but we don't want to just give away the resources. This is all we got, and we want to protect it.” Towering red sandstone buttes have, time and again, turned into the unmistakable backdrop for some of Tinseltown's biggest blockbusters. From Tom Hanks in “Forrest Gump” to the final chapter of the “Back to the Future” trilogy. No matter the genre, Monument Valley has been glittering on the silver screen for nearly a century, but its popularity began with Westerns. Virigina Pearce is director of the Utah Film Commission. “Both states claim it as our own and it does get a lot of requests.” Arizona was the first state to ink such an MOU with the Navajo Nation in 2019; talks are underway with New Mexico to follow suit. “This MOU came at such a great time for us to not only look back and consider the history, but also look forward and think about how much more could we do if we work together.” James Lujan is from the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. He chairs the Cinematic Arts and Technology Department at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, N.M. and suggests these MOUs could benefit everyone. “It's a win for the production companies. It's a win for the tribe, because they have people that they're putting to work to train below-the-line crew members.” Like gaffers, camera operators, and set designers. But Lujan thinks training above-the-line talent – screenwriters, producers and directors – is even more important for representation. “Because that's the only way we're going to break into mainstream cinema is by taking ownership and control of our own stories.” Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Most wellness apps fail you. Not because you lack willpower, but because they were never designed around how humans actually change. Season 11 of The Creative Boom Podcast opens with Katy Cowan and Nicki Sprinz, CEO of ustwo – the studio behind Monument Valley – digging into the digital coaching revolution. What it looks like in practice, why it works when it does, and what it means to build technology that sits close to people's health, confidence and daily lives. Nicki has lived this. A former smoker who swapped one habit for running, she now helps brands create digital experiences that drive real behaviour change — from gut-health companions to fitness apps to smoking-cessation tools. One of their betas saw 75% of users engage more meaningfully with their health after just one month. They also talk about what all of this means for creatives: the changing shape of careers, why curiosity beats passion every time, and why critical thinking has never mattered more than in a world where AI can get you to the wrong answer faster than ever. This isn't an AI hype conversation. It's a grounded, generous one with a whole heap of hope. A new season begins. Right here.

Tammy Haddad  most recently finished teaching 5th and 6th grade and she likes to think that she knows what kids are into these days.  My guest is also the host of the "Cozy Rainbow" podcast which is geared for kids 10 years and up. As the  oldest of four siblings, Tammy says "I definitely get my drive from my mother. My father says "all my good qualities are from my mom."Though Tammy grew up in Las Vega, NV, she still has family that live on the reservation in Monument Valley, UT where her mother was raised. And it was through her tribe that both Shirlene and Tammy were able to get funds for their education.  Tammy's family was able to receive funding for college through various organizations, including the 'Native American Scholarship' (NAS) and 'Indian Health Services' (IHS) programs, just to name a few. Tammy explained "if you receive funding from IHS for college as Tammy's mother did, your first job in the healthcare field, you must work for two years on a reservation-part of a give back program." "My mother insisted that I apply for scholarships. I know lots of kids who didn't apply. I even worked at the scholarship office in college. I was dedicated to getting funding because of my mother. "Mom said, just get up and do it."  In turn, Tammy then was there to heIp her younger siblings apply as well.  And today, Tammy does not have tremendous outstanding loans.Tammy also shared her experience of coming out to her parents when she was then 16. She says "it was no big deal." She told her dad first, then her mom and her mom basically said "ok , cool no big deal." Tammy was very happy that her parents where understanding and that it wasn't a big to do.  She also doesn't understand why her sexual preference is anyone else's  business.  Tammy's advice to parents is, "tell your kids you love them no matter what, you'll never kick them out, and you'll always have a place to live here. Coming out doesn't have to be such a big deal," according to Tammy."Mom did all that she did-moved away, moved off the reservation and got her degree because she wanted me to have all the opportunities that she didn't have. My mom calls me her reincarnation" giggles Tammy. Not only do mother and daughter have similar personality traits, they do look very much alike.SOCIAL MEDIATWITTER: Tammy Haddad (@Had2Tammy) / TwitterFacebook: Cozy Rainbow Learning Co. - Home | FacebookInstagram: http://instagram.com/cozyrainbownvYoutube:  Cozy Rainbow - YouTube  "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Justin said, "When I got back, I realized that in addition to all the photos we had from the national parks, which obviously are well covered, including, I think it was episode 503, I actually had more photos of the places outside the national parks and Monument Valley than I did inside the national parks and Monument Valley." This itinerary summarizes Justin Barnes's recommended road trip through Utah and the surrounding region. The Alaska chapter of Safari Club International took a group of men from Kipnuk deer hunting last month. The hunters were evacuees from a storm that ravaged the Western Alaska coast, unleashed by Typhoon Halong. After more than a month of staying in shelters and hotel rooms in Anchorage, they were quick to accept the invitation. As KNBA's Rhonda McBride tells us, what transpired turned out to be more than just a hunt. The Safari Club and Alaska Native subsistence hunters have often been on the opposite side in debates over fish and game management. And some who have followed the politics over the years find it puzzling that the Safari Club reached out to help Kipnuk hunters displaced by the storm. But John Sturgeon, a longtime Safari Club member, says it should not be a surprise. “The Safari Club and the subsistence people are much closer together than most folks would think. We're hunters. They're hunters.” Sturgeon helped to organize the hunt. “We have the resources to help. And them eating wild game and going out after wild game is really important to them. And we just said, ‘Well, this is something we can do to help, especially at Christmas time.' So we're hoping this will make a few people happy.” What started out with five hunters snowballed. The evacuees had no clothes or gear, which they either lost in the storm or had to leave behind. Club members loaned them guns and scopes. One dug into his own pocket to outfit them for the hunt. The Safari Club bought them hunting licenses and chartered a boat from Whittier, Alaska to Montague Island, where the men took nine Sitka black-tailed deer. It's the first time Darrell John had gone hunting since an ocean surge carried his house away. “We were hunting deer on a beach, which I never ever thought I would be hunting.” “When I was gutting deer, I knew my family was going to eat something. Made me feel like I was providing for my family again.” Although John never dreamed he'd go hunting in a such in a faraway place like Prince William Sound, he suddenly felt more like his old self. When the hunters returned, they wanted to share their catch with others displaced by the storm. Suddenly plans mushroomed into a feast to feed more than 200. The Safari Club collected donations of fish and wild game, which included a seal from Kodiak Island. John's wife Lacey John knew right away what was cooking. “Seals have a strong scent. The seal that was baking. It smelled like home. I just breathed in. (laughter) ” Karson Apodaca. (Courtesy Sayetsitty Family / gofundme) A Christmas parade on the Navajo Nation was suddenly cut short this week after a suspected drunk driver struck and killed a child and injured three bystanders. KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio has details. The Kayenta Township near Monument Valley shared joy on social media ahead of its annual Christmas market and parade at the rodeo grounds. “The parade is going to start on Navajo Route 591, which is right behind Chevron, okay? It's like you're going to the flea market here if you live in Kayenta … That one's gonna start right at 5:00 p.m., so be ready.” But about 10 minutes later, that holiday cheer came to an abrupt halt after an alleged drunk driver entered the parade route and hit four people, including a child and a pregnant woman. The Navajo Police Department confirmed three-year-old Karson Apodaca died and a suspect is in custody. The Kayenta community and guests came together to honor and remember Karson Apodaca with a peaceful vigil walk, the singing of Christmas carols, and the decoration of a Christmas tree in his honor, followed by prayer circle. Josephine Romines, a volunteer from Unconquered Life, during the Holiday Resource Rally on December 10 in Ada, Okla, which served about 800 families during the event. (Courtesy Chickasaw Nation) This year, the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma and Feed the Children partnered to bring holiday packages to an estimated 800 Ada, Okla. area families. The recent drive-thru distribution included a 25 lbs. box of food, and a 15lbs box of personal care items, books, toys, and other products. Welcome to Winter's Edge and to Part One of a seven-episode series on how to care for your soul during the long dark of winter. In this opening teaching, I explore “the grandeur of the soul”—the first of seven soul-care themes drawn from Francis Weller's newest book, In the Absence of the Ordinary: Soul Work for Times of Uncertainty. Together, we look at why winter is the perfect season to tend the inner life, how the night sky has served for centuries as a metaphor for our own vastness, and what it means to remember that our soul is far more expansive than the small identity we navigate the world with. I share three star-filled memories—from childhood nights on a Lake Powell houseboat, to psychedelic desert trips during my drug years, to a profound sober night in Monument Valley, and finally a recent pilgrimage to Idaho's Dark Sky Reserve with my father's ashes. These stories ground the teaching: when we look into the night sky, we are glimpsing the immensity of our own soul. Drawing from John O'Donohue, I also teach why genuine soul work cannot be approached with neon intensity or psychological force. The soul is shy, sacred, and secretive. It requires candlelight, softness, shadow, and hospitality—not striving or spiritual hunting. You'll learn: ❄️ Why winter is the natural season for soul work ❄️ How the night sky serves as an ancient mirror for the soul's vastness ❄️ How modern life shrinks us into the “boat of self,” and how to reclaim our larger identity ❄️ Why the soul prefers subtlety, spaciousness, darkness, and quiet welcome ❄️ How awakening the soul invites destiny and meaning to meet us in new ways ❄️ A writing practice from Francis Weller to help you experience your own grandeur I close by reading my personal writing from Idaho's Dark Sky Reserve and offering an invitation into Winter Wise Circle, my signature 6-week soulful listening and writing community for early 2026. viralmindfulness.com/wise-circle-winter-2026

The first fat drops hit your visor and instinct says, find a bridge and wait it out. We take the other line—how preparation and perspective can turn a storm from something to fear into something that deepens the ride. From a solo run through Monument Valley straight into a black-green wall of hail to the quiet joy of forest air after rain, we share how gear, mindset, and community help you keep rolling when the sky gets loud. You'll hear practical ways to read weather and ride safely—slowing with intention, widening your margin, managing visibility and grip—paired with simple mental tools that keep panic from taking the bars. Mindfulness becomes the full-face helmet for your thoughts, self-care the waterproof layer for your spirit, and your riding community the warmth that holds when the temperature drops. Along the way, we explore why rain amplifies the senses, how discomfort can sharpen presence, and why some of the best views only appear in your mirrors after you've gone through the worst of it.If you've ever huddled under an overpass and wondered what it would feel like to keep going, this is your invitation to gear up and see storms differently. Subscribe for more road-tested reflections, share this with a rider who avoids the rain, and leave a review with your best wet weather tip—we'd love to hear how you ride it out.

Listen in as the guys dive into the game's meditative atmosphere, its sparse but evocative storytelling through Princess Ida's journey, and the meticulous development process that focused on polish over size. They also reflect on how Monument Valley stood apart in an era of noisy, ad-driven free-to-play titles, becoming a landmark “art game” that proved mobile experiences could be elegant, premium, and profoundly moving—all while sparking a legacy that continues to influence indie design today.Three Word Reviews:Bryan - Platform Perspective ShiftJosh - Delightful Puzzle BoxShow Notes:Relativity, MC. Some moments stick with you — not because you planned for them, but because they show up right when your soul is ready. In this minisode, I share a story from the trail that caught me by surprise. I came across a photo of a Navajo woman named Effie, riding her white horse, Rhythm, against the red canyon walls of Monument Valley. What started as admiration for a beautiful image turned into something much deeper after I met her in person and heard about the nonprofit work she's part of — and the realities of life on the reservation. She spoke about what it meant to finally have a roof that didn't leak and the hope of one day having a bathroom in her home. Her words grounded me in gratitude and reminded me how often we overlook the basics.I also read a handwritten letter from my great grandmother in 1919, during a time when horses and cars were both part of everyday life. It brought me back to the role horses have played across generations — not just in our history, but in our healing. This episode is a mix of memory, meaning, and movement — and a little sneak peek into the TEDx talk I'm working on. It's about horses, of course. And about how much they still belong in our lives. Thanks for riding along with me.Want to stay connected and see what's next? Episode Summary: In this episode of 90 Miles from Needles, host Chris Clarke looks into the intricate issues surrounding Bears Ears National Monument with guest Davina Smith, a Diné activist and Co-Chair of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition. The episode's introduction grapples with the political turmoil surrounding federal land designations and their impact on indigenous rights and environmental conservation. Clarke and Smith navigate through the consequences of political maneuvers by successive U.S. administrations, especially concerning the Bears Ears National Monument's existence and preservation. Throughout the episode, Smith discusses the historical and cultural significance of Bears Ears for the Dine people and other Native American tribes, underscoring its critical importance beyond mere land but as a living museum and spiritual sanctuary. Smith passionately depicts current threats from mining interests and unauthorized land use and calls for more robust public understanding and participation in protecting these sacred lands. As listeners are taken through Smith's perspective as an advocate and a former state political candidate, they are encouraged to engage actively in desert protection initiatives. Key Takeaways: Historical Significance of Bears Ears: Bears Ears is regarded by the Diné as a sacred cultural landscape with deep historical ties dating back to their ancestors, serving as a refuge and resource area. Current Threats to Bears Ears: The ongoing risk from mining activities and political opposition threatens the preservation efforts, reflecting past attempts to reduce and undermine land protections. Advocacy and Public Education: Emphasizing the importance of educating oneself about Bears Ears and its management plan as a means to participate proactively in conservation efforts. Political Dynamics: The Trump administration’s rollback of national monument protections is a recurring theme, revealing the broader political attacks on federal lands. Community Collaboration: Exploring avenues for economic growth respecting cultural lands, including tourism as a potential path, highlighting the complexity of local collaboration efforts. Notable Quotes: "It's about educating yourself, hearing from those that have worked in this work of protecting Bears Ears." "Bears Ears is a living environment, and that's why I go there…it's still communicating with Mother Earth." "I'm here to be a part of that voice because I was shared from my mother, my grandmother, and the grandmothers before them." "Educating people in these areas of Bears Ears…it's about educating these areas, but educating yourself as an individual."
