On this, the 69th anniversary of the passing of a great radio humorist, we present the NBC program Biography in Sound,  This episode was broadcast two days prior to what would have been his 62nd birthday, May 29, 1956.  Ironically that was just 10 days following my birth.  And yes, I chose this picture because of another irony.  Until I graduated college, I played the tuba.  Here's a partial list of those apart of Fred that you will hear in this 55 minute program.Kenny Delmar, Tallulah Bankhead, Doc Rockwell, Jack Benny, Herman Wouk, Jim Harkins, Francis Spellman, Donald Voorhees, Peter Donald, Bill Mullen, James Mason, Jimmy Durante, Goodman Ace, Henry Tugan, Joe DeGray, Mike Jakes, Minerva Pious, Jack Haley, Ed Herlihy, Edgar Bergen, Herb Shriner, Benny Droan, Clifton Webb, George Jessel, John Royal, Roger White, Pat Weaver, Harry Von Zell, John Crosby, Stanley Trablinsky, Morton Green, George Foster, Su Chan, Max Asgur, Alan Reed, and Parker Fennelly.  Each paying tribute with remembrances of Fred Allen. And yes, writer Earl Hamner wrote much of the continuity of this program.  The same Earl Hamner who created The Waltons and Falcon Crest.  One more amazing talent who influenced so many more.  May he rest in peace and know that even today, he is remembered for all the laughs he gave all of us.

EPISODE 75 - “MEHAR BABA BRINGS SPIRITUALITY TO OLD HOLLYWOOD” - 2/17/2025 During the 1920s and 1930s, a spiritual movement swept through Hollywood. It seems the Hollywood elite were about more than just speakeasies, flappers, and decadence. Some were searching for inner-peace and often found it -- at least temporarily -- in these various religious movements that popped up. One spiritual leader who came to prominence was India's MEHAR BABA, who believed that spirituality and metaphysics were interconnected. Stars like MARY PICKFORD, TALLULAH BANKHEAD, and MARIE DRESSLER were admirers. And when Baba visited Hollywood in May of 1932, you'll never believe where he stayed! Get enlightened and listen to this fascinating story of spirituality in Hollywood.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: The God Man (1964), by C.B.Purdom; Mehar Baba, www.meharcenter.org “Mehar Baba: A Brief Biography,” www.avatarmeharbabatrust.org; “Pete Townsend Speaks of Mehar Baba,” www.petetoensend.net; “Mehar Baba: The Compassionate Father,” www.ramdass.org; “Highest of the High: Full Message By Mehar Baba with Introduction,” YouTube, com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  The Devil and the Deep (1932); starring Tallulah Bankhead, Gary Cooper, Charles, Laughton, & Cary Grant; Love Me Tonight (1932), starring Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Charles Ruggles, & Myrna Loy; Grand Hotel (1932), starring Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Beery, & Lewis Stone; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. It was a meeting place and home away from home for such luminaries as famed wits/authors Alexander Woollcott and Dorothy Parker; Broadway and Hollywood stars, including Tallulah Bankhead and Charles Laughton; popular raconteurs like Robert Benchley; and New York City mayors Jimmy Walker and Fiorello LaGuardia. Observing it all was celebrated author and journalist Konrad Bercovici. Born in Romania, Bercovici settled in New York, where he became known for reporting on its rich cultural life. The Big Show was a variety program created by NBC Radio in hopes of keeping the medium competitive with television. In 1950, listeners were deserting radio and becoming TV viewers. NBC's answer was to produce a lavish, expensive, star studded program that would stop the exodus. The Big Show was 90 minutes long, featuring the greatest comedians, stage, screen and music talent of the day, hosted by actress Tallulah Bankhead. It premiered on November 5, 1950. But the Big Show could not turn the tide, the golden age of radio was rapidly ending. NBC cancelled the show after two seasons and a reported loss of $1 million, which was a lot of money in the 1950s. You're going to hear Big Show #5, broadcast on December 3rd, 1950, featuring comedians Fred Allen, Joan Davis, Phil Silvers, and President Harry Truman's daughter Margaret. 1920s in the UK the Authorities were worried about the behaviour of some of the young people who were later called 'The Bright Young things'. The Establishment were worried about nightclubs, dancing and drinking and the Home Secretary was determined to do something about it. When he found out about a scandal at Eton College where boys were supposedly being seduced by actresses, he was determined to make an example of Tallulah Bankhead, an American actress who seemed to be pleased to be called the most immoral woman in the world.

While we both hope that our ties to Alabama put us on track to be considered luminaries of the state, we'll never be in the same league as actress Tallulah Bankhead. Born into a powerful political dynasty in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1902, she won a trip to New York City at the age of just 15. She took it from there, landing movie roles and a reputation for her stage work that would take her to London, Hollywood, and permanent icon status. TV CONFIDENTIAL: A radio talk show about television

TVC 644.6a: Greg Ehrbar discusses the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of The Daydreamer (1966), a feature-length live-action and Animagic-animated adaptation of some of the most famous fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen that was produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, and which featured the talents of Hayley Mills, Tallulah Bankhead, Jack Guilford, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Boris Karloff, Burl Ives, Victor Borge, Terry-Thomas, Ed Wynn, Patty Duke, and Robert Goulet. Though unsuccessful at the box office at the time it was originally released, The Daydreamer, in many respects, served as a precursor to the many television specials that Rankin-Bass produced throughout the 1970s. Under contract with Paramount, Tallulah Bankhead made six pictures in less than two years. Although they all have their charm, only Faithless (1932), which she made on loan-out to Metro, was a hit at the box office. Tallulah plays a character who loses everything but her wit after the Stock Market Crash. She trades caviar for soup and learns to like it. Thanks to sound editor Tom O'Mahony!

Front Row Classics is celebrating its 200th episode! I'm so very grateful for to you ,the listeners, for continuing to support this labor of love.  For our 200th episode, we're welcoming a very special guest : legendary actress and wildlife activist, Stefanie Powers. Powers grew up in the heyday of Los Angeles and even attended Hollywood High School. Brandon and Stefanie discuss her decades-long career in film, television and theater. Having worked with luminaries like John Wayne, Tallulah Bankhead, Bing Crosby & Maureen O'Hara, Stefanie has a wealth of perspective on the golden age of show business. We discuss her starring role in The Girl from U.N.C.L.E in the 60s which made her the first woman to star in an hour long series.  We ,of course, also spend time discussing the beloved series, Hart to Hart and her co-star, Robert Wagner. Stefanie has also dedicated her life to wildlife conservation. She founded the William Holden Wildlife Foundation following the death of her lifelong love, William Holden.  You can find out more about the foundation along with ways to give at whwf.org.

EPISODE 23 - “I Coulda Been a Contender: Classic Casting That Almost Happened” - 02/19/2024 It is well documented that the film “Gone With The Wind” started filming before an actress was cast in the lead role of Scarlett O'Hara. Producer DAVID O. SELZNICK made a spectacle out of who would win the coveted role. It became a national obsession. He considered everyone from TALLULAH BANKHEAD to BETTE DAVIS to LUCILLE BALL. He eventually narrowed the field to three finalists: PAULETTE GODDARD, JOAN BENNETT, and JEAN ARTHUR. But in the eleventh hour, a new contender, an unknown Brit named VIVIEN LEIGH, swept in and won the role. Listen as we discuss, debate, and guffaw over other casting choices that almost happened in some of your favorite film classics.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Hollywood's First Choices: How The Greatest Casting Decisions Were Made (1994), by Jeff Burkhart and Bruce Stuart; Casting Might Have Beens (2005), by Eila Mell; Jean Arthur: The Actress Nobody Knew (2004), by John Oller; George Raft: The Man Who Would Be Bogart (2015), by Stone Wallace; Life is a Banquet (1974), by Rosalind Russell; Joan Crawford: The Enduring Star (2009), by Peter Cowie; Michael Curtiz: A Life in Film (2021), by Alan Rode; Judy Holliday (1982), by Will Holtzman; Close-up on Sunset Boulevard: Billy Wilder, Norma Desmond, and the Dark Hollywood Dream (2002), by Sam Staggs Montgomery Clift: Beautiful Loser (1992), by Barney Hoskyns; Mike Nichols: A Life (2021), by Mark Harris; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Scarface (1932), starring George Raft, Paul Muni, Ann Dvorak, and Boris Karloff; Dead End (1937), starring Silvia Sidney, Joel McCrea, Humphrey Bogart, Wendy Barrie, and Claire Trevor; The Maltese Falcon (1941), starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Elisha Cook, Jr, and Lee Patrick  The Maltese Falcon (1931), starring Ricardo Cortez and Bebe Daniels; High Sierra (1941), starring Humphrey Bogart, Ida Lupino, Joan Leslie, Alan Curtis, Cornel Wilde, Arthur Kennedy, Willie Best, Elisabeth Risdon, and Henry Travers; His Girl Friday (1940), starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, and Ralph Bellamy; Twentieth Century (1934), starring John Barrymore and Carole Lombard; Mildred Pierce (1945), starring Joan Crawford, Ann Blyth, Jack Carson, Zachary Scott, Eve Arden, Bruce Bennett, and Lee Patrick;  Sunset Boulevard (1950), starring Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Erich von Stroheim, and Nancy Olson;    From Here To Eternity (1953); starring Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Donna Reed, and Ernest Borgnine; Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf (1966), starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal, and Sandy Dennis; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Katharine Ross;#023: "I COULDA BEEN A CONTENDER!" --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review four classic films released in January for the first time on Blu-ray. We're shining the projector light on the pre-code film "Faithless," (1932) where Tallulah Bankhead's riveting performance will grip you as we unravel the fabric of her character's tumultuous journey from riches to rags.  Next, we waltz through the restoration brilliance of "The Prince and the Pauper" starring the charismatic Errol Flynn and the Mauch twins.  Then we horse around with the timeless hilarity of the Marx Brothers in "A Day at the Races." We wrap up with the jazzy musical "A Cabin in the Sky," starring Ethel Waters, Eddie Anderson, and Lena Horne, and with appearances by Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.  It's a fantastic start to 2024 for fans of classic films.  We provide a review of each film,  the restoration, and all of the extras to help you decide if you want to add it to your physical media collection.Purchase links:A DAY AT THE RACES (1937) Blu-rayTHE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1937) Blu-rayCABIN IN THE SKY  (1943) Blu-rayFAITHLESS  (1932) Blu-ray The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers.
